hundreds march through oakland on this may day. good afternoon. i'm tori campbell. on this day of may day protests hundreds are marching from the port of oakland to city hall to take that stand against police brutality. tara joins us live from downtown oakland. has it been a peaceful protest so far? >> reporter: it really has. you can see there were some

dancers out here. about 300 people took part in the march. they arrived here about 20 minutes ago. they say that are were marching to take a stance against police brutality. [chanting] >> reporter: police escorted the group down middle harbor road and through acorn district. most of the demonstrators were at the march of start. at least 100 others moved in chanting and playing instruments. >> it just feels right, unity, you know? come together to stop the violence. >> i'm from santa rosa, california where he was shot dead by the sheriffs department. i'm here to make a statement. it comes in the wake of several cases of officer

involved shootings, one of which it really touched a nerve. they say several of scott's relatives are shore men. tonight at 7:00 protesters are going to be holding another rally at telegraph. i'm tara, back to you. >> thank you. early this morning may say protesters were in oakland. they meant to disrupt the morning commute. in this case they were targeting local tech company companies. >> i want them to leave because they are not giving back to the community. >> reporter: several others gathered outside the station this morning. their plan was to block shuttle buses from google, apple and facebook which pick up employees there. because of this demonstration those buses were rerouted and never showed up. they say large tech companies are pushing out low income

>> everybody is good. she had soot around her mouth but other than that everybody is fine. >> reporter: despite the quick response by firefighters that say there were several challenges in preventing this fire from spreading. >> the big challenge was access to the fire building. our guys had to make a really long hose to get fire back there but they got that fire knocked down. >> reporter: some from a family member they say died a few years ago. they say they will continue to move forward despite dealing with tragedy again. the fire remains under investigation. ktvu channel 2 news. an artist hoping to get a valuable painting back after what may have been an inadvertent art theft. he believes it was a misunderstanding and he does not want to press charges he just wants his painting back.

a couple can be seen on surveillance camera walking away with a blank canvas and finished painting. they may have thought the art was abandon. >> i ducked in and came out and the paintings were gone. >> the canvas only worth about 20 but the finished painting is worth about 5500. >> they also don't think the couple thought they were stealing anything. they hope someone will recognize the couple who can return the paintings, no questions asked. and so it's a little warm today are things going to cool down this weekend? >> yes. for the coast already feeling it the fog is back. for some areas 10 to 20 degrees cooler. the inland communities won't feel that cool down for today. take a look at that.
