oakland all day, where the cleanup continues and where there was a new protest today with a decidedly different tone than the one last night. >> reporter: we are here in frank ogawa plaza, ground zero for last night's protest and also today's protest, focused on the message, not the mayhem. this afternoon, about 100 or so people showed up in front of city hall, using art to voice their opposition to police violence. >> we're making this with flowers and we have the names of individuals who have been killed by police. >> reporter: surrounding the plaza, dozens of oakland police officers watching the demonstration. >> we're here to facilitate that and make sure no outsiders come in, disrupt their message or freedom of speech. >> reporter: organizers say they don't want the message to be lost when outside influences come into oakland and destroy property. >> your rage in our community under the banner of black lives is not okay. >> reporter: friday night, vandals taringed more than 30

businesses, including this hyundai dealership, smashing 60 cars and burning a brand-new 2015 hyundai elantra to the ground. at this honda dealership this afternoon, several windows were still wide open, despite long hours spent cleaning up. >> we started last night at 10:00 p.m. >> worked straight through the night? >> straight through, nonstop. we've been cleaning here and here, this side, on the other building. >> reporter: he spent his afternoon scrubbing graffiti off his auto body shop's door. >> there's no reason to damage property. >> reporter: it wasn't just graffiti. his windows were smashed and that's left him a frustrated small business owner. >> i don't feel i get what i pay for. i don't think i should have to pay all the taxes, all the fees and everything and then the police stand around and wash them smashing my windows. >> reporter: oakland police say extra officers are on duty tonight to prevent another round of destruction. >> we had some increased

staffing last night also. unfortunately, it did not go the way we wanted it to go. we would have liked to have less damage last night and vandalism. hopefully that doesn't go this way tonight. >> reporter: coming back out to our live shot, this is a common sight around oakland. you can see this business here, this chase bank, has windows boarded up. lot of the boards are up to repair last night's damage, but we've also seen a fair share of businesses around oakland that are putting up the plywood in their windows, just in case things get out of hand again tonight. back to you guys. >> christien kafton live in oakland, thank you. oakland's mayor and the police chief reacted today to last night's violence. >> a very small group of people with rocks in their pockets and malice in their hearts disturbed what was otherwise a very positive day in oakland. and the result was significant damage to businesses in our civic center and in our auto

grove. >> the mayor said the city did a good job of protecting people, but not as good a job protecting property. but the oakland police chief said protecting human life was the priority, especially as last night's protests changed. >> once we declared an unlawful assembly after the broken windows, at that point, from that point forward, it's not facilitating a peaceful march. it's trying to put an end to it and to make arrests, particularly for the vandalisms that were occurring. >> reporter: 12 people were arrested and one officer had a minor injury. the chief says officers used force twice during the arrests. he asked for business owners and the public to send video of that vandalism to police. the mayor says at least 30 businesses were vandalized and that crews started to clean up even before sunrise. thousands of people took to the streets in baltimore today in what turned out to be a largely peaceful protest. this, as civil rights leaders praised the decision to charge

six police officers for the in- custody death of freddie gray. peter deucer reports from baltimore. >> reporter: crowds of people marched through the streets of baltimore, showing their anger about the death of freddie gray. a large group rallying at city hall, holding signs, and speaking out. >> this moment right now, this momentum is to be used for tomorrow. it's for the voices of the youth today so we can build organizations. >> we are here in unity! we are here because we still have work to do! >> reporter: prosecutors say freddie gray suffered a severe neck injury while in police custody and was ignored when he pleaded for medical treatment. on friday, baltimore's state attorney maryland mosby announced six police officers will face a number of charges, ranging from second degree murder to assault and false imprisonment. but some analysts stress it's important not to jump to

conclusions. >> the hard part is proving each and every one of these charges matching up the facts to the, to the law, and proving it beyond a reasonable doubt. >> reporter: the reverend al sharpton saying in new york on saturday that the charges are a step in the right direction. >> the charges are not a conviction, but it is the opening of a process that we didn't see in ferguson or in statin island. >> reporter: the governor has declared a state of emergency and activated the national guard to prevent violence. a nighttime curfew is scheduled to remain in effect through the weekend. in baltimore, peter doocey, fox news. >> we have more on the unrest in baltimore on our website, including the booking photos of all six officers charged in freddie gray's death. you can log on to ktvu.com. authorities in contra costa county are looking into whether a suspected drunk driver intentionally plowed into a group of people outside a restaurant, killing one person and injuring eight others.

dozens of people were standing in the parking lot of the restaurant in bay point around 2:00 this morning, when sheriffs officials say the driver of the pickup truck backed into the crowd at a high rate of speed. >> when we arrived on scene, we had approximately nine to 10 victims hit by a reckless driver in the parking lot. we've had some witnesses who told us that it was an intentional act. >> one person remains in critical condition. that driver was arrested and faces manslaughter and dui charges. deputies have not released his name or the names of any of the victims. pittsburg police say a man shot and killed two people suspected of breaking into his home. it happened just after 9:00 last night on jewett avenue. police say this is the second time this week someone has tried to burglarize the home. four people were arrested during the first attempt. investigators haven't said if the two incidents are connected. the names of the two people killed have not yet been

released. in vacaville, a police chase ended today with seven people hurt, including a baby. authorities tell us that officers began pursuing the car late this afternoon and that the chase ended when the suspect car hit four other vehicles near the intersection of marshall road and alamo drive. we're told the suspects, all of them oakland residents, are accused of burglarizing homes. police say the baby was in the suspect's car. there are no details yet on the severity of those injuries. oakland police are investigating a train accident that killed a texas man. the amtrak train struck the man last night at jack london square, not far from the train station. a witness captured police activity on his cell phone. the 70-year-old man from dallas was pronounced dead at the scene. police say they don't know why he was in oakland and have not yet released his name. no one on the train was hurt. one of the most anticipated boxing matches in recent history tonight, the floyd mayweather-manny pacquiao fight in las vegas is set to start in

a few hours. looks like the viewing parties are already getting started, cara? >> reporter: yes, the party has definitely started already. probably close to a hundred people already here at fort mckinley restaurant. this is a check-in table. lot of people trying to get checked in, trying to get their spots in the bar, in the restaurant. also, the food was served just a few minutes ago as well. they are doing a buffet-still filipino and asian food dinner. we saw quite a few fans earlier today, even though the viewing party has been sold out for more than a week. a lot of people were here trying to get in and find a way to watch this fight. dozens of people already here, even though the main event isn't expected to start until about 8:30 or 9:00 this evening. fort mckinley, popular in the filipino community, will have primarily pacquiao fans, as you can imagine. the restaurant has ordered double their usual amount of food and alcohol to prepare for this evening's watch party. they also paid more than $7000 for the rights to show this fight here to 200 people.

the pricing was offset by a local sponsor, so tickets were $18 to watch from the bar and $38, including dinner. the owners say they are looking forward to hosting their community and supporting their favorite fighter. >> pacquiao is one of the first heroes that is really representing the filipino community. everyone here is a fan. they are looking forward to it. >> the reason pacquiao is big, he's kind of brought -- he came from very humble beginnings to begin with in the philippines and now is someone really big, has brought pride to the filipino community. >> reporter: the owners tell me they don't think they will need it, but they did bring on extra security because they do expect a full house tonight. they tell me they definitely expect it to be one of their best nights ever. >> lot of people watching. thank you very much, cara. a top silicon valley ceo died suddenly last night. dave goldberg was the chief executive at monkey survey and the husband of facebook coo sheryl sandberg.

according to his bio, goldberg was a harvard graduate and spent several years as a successful music industry executive and venture capitalist before getting into high tech. the cause of death still hasn't been released. dave goldberg was 47 years old. boeing is dealing with another glitch in its dreamliner commercial jet series. the faa issued a directive yesterday, ordering extra maintenance on power supplies for all 787 airliners. the agency says that after 248 days of use, the plane could suddenly lose all electrical power. if that happened, the crew could not control the aircraft. the maintenance requirement began immediately and will continue until software is developed to fix that problem. gas prices are gearing up for the summer driving season. this week, the national average reached $2.58 a gallon, the highest so far this year. analysts say the price of crude oil has gone up and some refineries have cut production. the bay area has seen a sharp rise in prices. according to aaa, this weekend a gallon of regular costs $3.80

million lawsuit after the pipeline explosion in fresno last month. that pipeline blew up april 17 at a fresno county sheriffs shooting range after it was punctured by a bulldozer. more than a dozen people were hurt. three of the injured were part of a jail inmate work crew. a lawyer for the inmates filed a complaint against the utility. the attorney says the explosion bears similarities to the 2010 san bruno blast and he says the utility is culpable for the inmates' injuries. from nigeria tonight comes word from the military that government forces have rescued an additional 230 women and children, kidnapped by boca haram. nigeria's military says that over the last week, they have rescued a total of 677 females from the forest in northeast nigeria, where the sunni extremists have a strong hold. some of the women who were freed are said to be pregnant. there has been no announcement yet on whether any of those rescued are the young students who were kidnapped from the

girls school a year ago. the mass kidnapping was covered worldwide and triggered the campaign you may remember, bring back our girls. a week after the deadly 7.8 earthquake in nepal, much- needed food and supplies are beginning to trickle in. relief workers say a great deal of aid is being held up at the airport due to government red tape and that problems at customs harassing inspections of aid convoys and local officials seizing goods are also leading to the slow pace of distribution. the international community has pledged more than $60 million in emergency aid. the cost to rebuild nepal could top $5 billion, with the death toll expected to exceed 7000. amid all of the despair, new life. a baby was born in a field outside a hospital in kathmandu. the midwife who helped the mother said she prayed the birth would show all nepalese women there is hope for the future. it's a girl for prince
