residents have complained for years about this bay area residential hotel. and ktvu has even gone inside to see for ourselves the mold and unsanitary conditions and now the building has been red tagged. good afternoon. i'm tori campbell. it will be at least one more day before residents of the towers in oakland are allowed to move back home. ktvu's christien kafton is live at the hotel which was red tagged because of contaminated water. an inspector showed up this morning. >> reporter: yeah. i just spoke with him a couple

of minutes ago. i learned maybe five, ten minutes ago, he's saying the possible theory as to what may have happened, this law office right here has been unused for several years. that means the water has not been used. so the water may have backed up and that may have contaminated the drinking water for the rest of the units. people started getting sick here. the city of oakland came by red tagged the entire building thursday night after finding unsafe bacteria in the water here. crews arrived friday morning at the towers ready to take samples and see if the first round of chlorine treatment cleaned out the contamination trying to figure out how the drinking water was tainted in the first place. >> the plan to have a plumber go through the system and we'll see where the contamination is coming from. >> reporter: residents complained of stomach disdress

and -- distress and had the water analyzed. many of the residents reported getting ill. lydia was one of three people who was so sick she had to go to the hospital. >> when i went to the hospital, i suspected the water. any time i drank it, took a shower, brushed my teeth, i would feel nauseous and sick. >> reporter: this is not the first set of problems for this property. last year inspectors found leaks, signs of black mold, unfinished maintenance and repairs. an entire family is living in one room unit that they say backed up backed up with dirty black water. >> we've been working on it for three months now. they are going through a process. it's in a positive direction. it's not there yet. we won't stop until we get it where it needs to be. >> reporter: residents were gone friday morning but neighbors stopped by hoping they can clean up their act. >> you don't expect in a big

city that you would have problems with the water like that especially in the bay area. >> reporter: now, ktvu was here thursday night as residents boarded buses that took them to a motel 6 for the flight. there were 57 units that were occupied. many of them have two or more people living together. none of the residents are allowed back inside until workers can determine how the contamination took place, repair it, retest the water to make sure the water is clear of the bacteria. the city says the goal is to get the residents back home by tomorrow. we did try to talk with some of the workers here. they did not want to speak on camera and they referred us to an attorney. we called that attorney. we left a message and have not heard back to find out what his response is to the red tagging of this building. >> all right. we'll stay on top of this story. a big construction crane fell over this morning at a south bay construction site. it happened around 7:30 a.m.

along great america parkway in santa clara. it's not too far from levi stadium. the crane damaged a corner of the building independent con-- under construction. it appears part of the crane broke away. no reports of injuries at the site. no word on why the crane toppled over. a police standoff near downtown san jose is over. it began at 6:30 when a woman called police to say a man pointed a gun at her inside a home. she was able to escape and told police the man was still inside with several weapons. streets around the area of north 12th street between julian and washington were blocked off. people living nearby were asked to evacuate their homes. the standoff lasted all through the night. police say they were not in a rush and were waiting for the right time to make contact with the man. >> we're always trained to be careful, especially when there are weapons involved. this call was no exception. we just made sure we took our time and that we were very

careful. we did call out the merge unit. they are the ones who took over and were able too establish contact with the -- able to establish with the suspect and take him into custody. >> the man has been identified as john adams and was booked for making threats and assault. a man who worked at a children's science camp in santa clara county is accused of possessing child pornography. the 27-year-old man here worked at walden west science camp. he was arrested wednesday. deputies found hundreds of images of child pornography on his personal computer and phone. he started to work at the camp in august of 2013. we're learning new information today about the search for two rohnert park girls who police say were

unlawfully taken by their father earlier this week. the girl's grandmother called ktvu this morning and told us both girls are safe. she also said their father is in contact with police and making arrangements to return the children. authorities have been searching r no 89-year-old a -- searching for 9-year-old alyssa reep and her sister, kyra. the girls were taken tuesday afternoon by their father. police say he showed up at their after-school program with an order from a mendocino county judge, awarding him temporary emergency custody. the police say that judge was not aware of a restraining order filed against reep by the mother of his children. ktvu spoke to phone by reep's mother. she said her son took the girls to washington to visit relatives and he had no clue about the restraining order. >> i think a lot of it was a misunderstanding. they've been divorced for i think eight years. but yet, they are together. they had a baby together this

last year. >> it's a mother's worst nightmare, just not knowing where your babies are and if they are safe. >> the -- the girls' mother said she's been arrested twice before on felony charges. we reached out to rohnert park police for aniant on the -- for an update on the search but have not heard back. a missing oakland man and his two young children are safe and sound after going missing during a camping trip in the tahoe national forest. nicholas vlahos, his 5-year-old and 3-year-old were found safe in downieville in sierra county. they were spotted last night. the children's grandparents were among those who searched for them over three days. >> you are thinking about the kids and what kind of situation they are in. did they go off the side of a

cliff some place? everything is going through your mind. and so i was just -- we were -- we were excited they were safe and well. >> the grandfather says the three got stranded after their struck slid off an unpaved road and into a tree. vlahos and the children are still in down-- downieville. a rollover accident blocked highway 4 at the height of the morning commute in the east bay. the crash happened in the westbound lanes this morning on bailey road. you can see a black sedan flipped over on the roof. the chp says a toyota tundra was also involved in the accident at least one person was taken to the hospital. traffic backed up all the way into pittsburgh -- pittsburg and antioch. caltrans is warning of potential gridlock traffic because the san mateo bridge will be closed. starting at 10:00 -- both

the man hit by a bus in san francisco is being treated at a hospital this noontime. police tell us the accident

happened just after 10:00 this morning at 4th and townsend streets near the caltrain station. the 42-year-old man was knocked to the ground by a privately- owned bus. he was taken to san francisco general with injuries that did not appear to be life- threatening. the bus driver stayed at the scene while police investigate the cause of the accident. the justice department has announced a federal investigation into the baltimore police force. the probe comes at the request of baltimore's mayor and will focus on whether the department has a pattern of discrimination. this follows the death of freddie gray who died while in police custody last month. the justice department is already looking into whether gray's civil rights were violated. six officers have been charged in his death. a stark warning from the director of the fbi as the investigation into last weekend's shooting in garland, texas continues. this as there's growing concern that terrorists are shifting their recruitment tactics reaching a wider audience

through social media. joel waldman has more from washington. >> reporter: isis is expanding their reach now using social media as a reasons to radicalize potentially thousands of individuals around the world. in a briefing with reporters about the shooting in texas, fbi director james comey spoke of more home grown threats saying i know there are other elton simpsons out there. it's almost as if there's a devil sitting on the shoulder saying kill, kill, kill, all day long, recruiting at the same time. elton simpson is one of the two gem killed on sunday during an -- gunmen killed on sunday during an attack on free speech in a cartoon contest of the prophet muhammad. isis claimed responsibility within days of the attack. >> isis is being -- they are having a lot of success using social media capturing the imagination of young americans.

in southern california yesterday. before that she was in san francisco on wednesday for two other fund-raisers. british prime minister david cameron will keep his job for five more years with the surprisingly clear victory in yesterday's general election. polls showed him in a dead heat. but the conservative party won an easy majority of seats in marley minute -- parliament. he went to buckingham palace to tell queen elizabeth he had enough votes to form a government. they took a beating in scotland. almost all of those seats were lost to the scottish natural party. an accused bank robber speaks from his jail cell after posting pictures and video of the crime on his instagram page but jason marks explains why the robber's side of the story might be different than what might expect. >> i went and gave a note and

asked politely. >> reporter: while he did say "pleat" when he -- did say "please" when he handed the teller a note, police call it robbery. he says it wasn't. >> a robbery is demanding and taking the money or whatever like that. i didn't do that. >> reporter: he took this picture of the note and posted it on instagram. he said he needed $150,000 bands, which means -- 150,000 bands which means dollars. he also said he knew it would take police tree, four minutes to -- three, four minutes to get there. so he didn't want the teller to hit the alarm until he was gone. >> that way they would understand how that works to get into other things. >> reporter: he wouldn't say what the other things are. he did admit to taking cell phone videos of the incident and posting those before leaving the bank. he told me he was a rapper. so i asked him if this was all

to get attention to help his career. >> maybe my instagram is going to let exposed and there's other things on there that has nothing to do with what happened. >> reporter: he was arrested 20 minutes later with a bag of money. he doesn't think anything he did was wrong because he asked -- because he asked nicely. right now tropical storm anna is centered about 180 miles south-southeast of myrtle beach, south carolina. forecasters say the system is expected to bring 2 to 4 inches of rain when it moves in over the weekend. the storm has winds of about 45 miles an hour. and it's expected to strengthen a bit over the next 24 hours. the atlantic hurricane season officially begins june 1st. let's check in with our weather locally and mark's here. not too bad compared to yesterday. >> yeah, yesterday, a turbulent

day with the showers, thunderstorms, even hail. the apache fog making a come back coastside. looking fairly niz for your friday -- fairly nice for your friday. right now on live stormtracker2, evidence of yesterday's storm is way out here. you can see a circulation moving out toward nevada and we have a few wrap-around showers heading towards southern california. we had a chance here but it looks like lingering clouds. patchy fog trying to regroup closer to monterey bay. as far as current numbers, san jose, 64 degrees. san francisco, 57. half moon bay, 58. a lot of 60s inland, even walnut creek already in the lower 70s with a fairly nice 72 degrees. now, yesterday's storm, of course, we had rain showers in the bay area. a lot of snow in the sierra. take a look at this tweet coming from the national park service in yosemite.

look at this. it's over 20 inches of snowfall at tuolumne meadows. all of the moisture approaching hetch hetchy. that's the water source for san francisco. at least we'll be tracking more snowfall. for today, this area of low pressure heading out of town, heading out to the south and east. a bit of a breeze out there. wind around 10 to 20 miles an hour. the weekend completely dry but it won't be warm coastside. we'll keep patchy fog nearby. the temperatures near 60 degrees. inland neighborhoods approaching the mid, even upper 70s on sunday. here's the forecast model. patchy fog trying to regroup. and then tomorrow morning, big surge of low clouds and fog. i think we'll wake up overcast. the clouds retreat to near the coastline during the afternoon hours of saturday and then the same deal into sunday with temperatures trending up a little bit in the sunday forecast primarily inland. a lot of 70s for this

stocks have been sharply higher all day after there was an encouraging pick up in

hiring last month. the gain of 23,000 jobs suggested the economy is -- 223,000 suggested the economy is regaining its footing. right now, the dow is currently up 258. the nasdaq is up 54 and the s&p is up 26. water may start tasting and smelling different in parts of the east bay. they say the ongoing drought is to blame. usually east bay m.u.d. customers get their water from the bottom of the reservoir. but because of the lack of rain beginning sunday, the drinking water will come to the top of the reservoir and from the sacramento river. the colder water is saved for migrating salmon which is many -- mandated by regulations. the warmer water tastes different because it contains organic material but it's safe to drink.
