a few of those cars in the fast track lanes moving by but boy, just about complete gridlock here at the bay bridge on this sunday evening. ktvu's debora villalon live now in hayward with an update on the progress that's being made on the san mateo bridge, deb. >> reporter: heather, at least they're right on schedule. the signs should come down and the ramps reopened by 5:00 a.m. but it's not soon enough for people stuck in today's big back ups. >> 8:00 at night and interstate 80 through berkeley headed through the bay bridge was stop and go. the same way it's been pretty much all day. thousands of people delayed getting through the maze or into the city. >> it always hurts a little bit before it gets better. >> reporter: caltrans monitoring the san mateo bridge closure knows when one artery shuts down others suffer. >> the traffic is bad out there. >> are you hearing from people? >> we always hear from people. 24 hours a day. seven days a week.

stopped. red barely moving but watching on a map doesn't begin to convey the frustration of being there and the bay bridge toll plaza stayed jam, metering lights on well into the evening. >> nice weather, people are working. >> reporter: caltrans insists the closed bridge is just one factor. >> you're approaching prom season, graduation, we have a lot more people around. >> reporter: tomorrow drivers will notice some sprucing up. a newly painted toll plaza. the closure is a chance to get caught up on maintenance. remember this happens all over again in two weeks. memorial day weekend to finish the paving job. but heather perhaps that time more people will head south and use the barton bridge and take some of the stress off.

and a look at how bad fire season might be this year. first to bolinas where a fire started on some eucalyptus trees. crews had the flames fully contained by 10:00 a.m. with no damage to structures. firefighters quickly put out a fire that started on a dry hillside. crews attacked the fire to keep the flames from spreading. again no damage or injuries reported here. then this afternoon a fire in san bruno. sao city fire, calfire, and north county fire all work to control a 12-acre grass fire that was burning on san bruno mountain. the fight included water

dumping aircrafts. and there was a rally to encourage communication on what it means to live in peace. the woman who organized this rally says she was motivated by the drive by shooting that injured little cumar polk. he is still hospitalized and his grandmother says he is not doing too well. police are still looking for the suspect. >> i wanted to just do something. i told people it wasn't for him but it was because of what happened to him that as a community we needed to just talk, communicate. >> reporter: the woman says she planned it for mother's day because it's often the mothers who are left mourning the violence that is injuring or killing their children. tonight three men and a woman are behind bars in mississippi accused of killing two police officers during a traffic stop. as molly line reports this mother's day is a day of mourning for the families left

behind. >> reporter: two police officers have lost their lives. one was just at the beginning of his career. and the other had been honored. two officers were murdered following a traffic stop. dean a canine officer who was previously named officer of the year leaves behind a wife and young children. and tate is a rookie and described as having an infectious smile. the investigation is still in the early stages. but city leaders say the deadly altercation began shortly after one of the officers pulled over a vehicle. the second officer arriving shortly thereafter. shots were fired and one of the police cruisers was also stolen from the scene. >> pop, pop, pop. i knew instantly somebody was shot. >> i heard the sirens coming.

office received several 911 calls reporting shots fired outside of a home. some people had gathered to remember that victim in sacramento. when they arrived they found the victim suffering from multiple gunshot wound. he was taken to marin where he died during surgery. no suspect description has been released yesterday. riding california's bullet train could be one of the world's cheapest high speed rail trips. the analysis from the los angeles time estimated the round trip ticket would be $86 that's about 20-cents a mile. the full line between san francisco and l.a. is expected to open to passengers sometime in 2028. a 74-year-old woman is back on solid ground after being rescued from near the summit of mount diablo. officials say she fell and suffered an injury while on the remote area on the east side of a mountain. authorities were called to assist around 4:00 this

>> he released the protest song called baltimore. ahead of the concert he sang it this evening at the royal farms arena. people attending the concert were asked to wear gray in honor of freddie gray who died of his injuries that he sustained while in police custody. as he was being put in a police van. freddie gray could be heard yell in pain. city records suggest baltimore police often fail to get adequate medical attention to those who need it before taking them to jail. the baltimore sun newspaper looked at records from june 2012 to april of this year and found that correctional officers at the baltimore city detention center refuse to admit almost 2,600 detainees because they were suffering

from medical conditions. book innoted -- book in noted a number of medical conditions including hyper tension. there are concerns that international attention to this crisis has already diminished. according to the united nations their initial request to the international community was for $423 million in aid for nepal. so far they've received pledges of around $22 million. meantime portuguese soccer star christiano ronaldo is donating almost $8 million of his 52 million annual to the save the children charity.
