we are live in oakland this morning, where a fallout over the violent protests over a week ago continues. the city's auto row is not back to normal. business owners say they are waiting for the city to make road on a promise it made. tara moriarty is looking into the growing frustration and tensions. she will tell us what is at stake. good morning. welcome once again to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. >> good morning. i'm dave clark. let's talk about weather and traffic. still a little nippy outside. >> yeah. >> kind of gray? >> yeah. >> gray over the weekend. today it will be cooler for everybody even though we'll get more sun. can't get much colder than 57. we went 59 because we'll see the low cloud deck burn off sooner. it took a while for some areas to get the sun over the weekend. a little disruption over the fog bank. there's still plenty to go

around. 13-mile-an-hour wind out of the west in daly city. that's cold. system is the north giving them some rain. there will be a series of lows coming down the coast carving themselves out of. the one to the north will stay to the north. but a strong one expected on thursday. 40s on the temps or 50s. you can find that with a pretty good breeze. it will be a breezy day. sfo had gusts to 30. due west 24, west-southwest at 9. it's an onshore breeze. it's ushered in cool air aloft. some temperatures will struggle to get to 70. sun, clouds, breezy. 70s for a few. but a lot of 50s an -- and 60s. all right, sal. the smitt bridge is -- the san mateo bridge is open. >> that's right. here is a look at the san mateo bridge. it's open to traffic in both directions, after it was shut down for roadwork all weekend.

the bridge was scheduled to reopen at 5:00 this morning. but it opened about a half-hour early. crews removed the road bed going right down to the steel bridge deck, repaved a mile long section. not all of the work is done. more is scheduled for the memorial day holiday weekend in a few weeks, and we're expecting to slow traffic on the alternate route. let's take a look at the carquinez bridge to the macarthur maze. traffic is slow. 37-minute drive time. keeps getting busier and busier. the east bay commute is actually getting busier all over the place in livermore, in pleasanton, especially on 680. we'll end the report with the bay bridge toll plaza, that's backed up to the macarthur maze. those metering lights are on. it's about a 20-minute delay before you make it on the bridge. at 7:03. back to the desk.

>> thank you, sal. some oakland merchants are still angry one week after violent protesters trashed their businesses. they say the city promised them help but so far they are still waiting for that help to appear. tara moriarty is on oakland's auto row and tara, you are outside an you a oshop where one -- outside an auto shop where one owner is making his frustrations visible. >> reporter: that's right. he's very angry. his business was targeted by vandals the other week. it was on may day after the protests. he had his garage graffitid all over and then -- graffitid all over -- graffitied all over. this says, riot tourism, visit oakland. we'll show you what block to trash. a growing sense of frustration by merchants who received the brunt of the damage. the hyundai dealership was hardest his with 70, 80 cars --

hit with 70, 80 cars destroyed. one vehicle was lit on fire. several businesses downtown still have their windows boarded up. oakland mayor libby schaaf promised the city would help since the police response fell short. the city held a meeting. so far merchants say there's been nothing concrete. just empty promises. business owners say they shouldn't have to pay for something they aren't responsible for something and for -- responsible for. it looks like the business owner has just shown up now. eric? >> yes? >> reporter: we're doing a story on your sign. we were wondering, have you heard anything from the city yet? >> no. >> reporter: and they were talking about some low-interest loans they were gonna be offering people like yourself on thursday night. but how do you feel about that? >> i would think that's a low-

joining us. that's eric. he's been vocal about the past week or so like this. like you heard, they are gonna paint over this sign here with a new message. we'll be sure to let you know what it says coming up on our news tonight. >> and i'm sure it's getting the attention of city hall. maybe there will be a response. >> thank you. 7:06. well, california's severe drought has a lot of individuals and businesses making major changes. starbucks is one of them. janine de la vega joining us live now. you are in santa clara to tell us how they are trying to save water. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning, dave. we're here at the starbucks on el camino. they say bottled water. if you turn this around and look at the label, it says the water source is from baxter springs. that's in placer county. the coffee company no longer wants to take water from california's springs. starbucks has decided it doesn't want to use the water

in a state where there is a severe drought. ethos announced it will no longer purchase water from baxter springs or any others in california. some customers say they started to pay attention to labels on bottled water because of the drought. >> well, you just look to see where it's bottled from, and -- from what state, what area and what have you. but i think it's nice that starbucks is being -- is making an effort. >> reporter: other companies are coming under fire for selling bottled water from california. a group is trying to get nestle to stop. and beside this latest move by starbucks, they are reporting they've decreased the amount of water they have used in california stores by 20%.

so dave, they are trying to do their part. back to you. >> thank you. 7:08. well, speaking of the drought, some cities are taking aim at backyard swimming pools. san jose recently became the biggest city in california to ban filling up pools. it takes 20,000 gallons of water. under the new restrictions, homeowners may top off existing pools. these restrictions are misguided. they cite a study that says swimming pools use less water every year than a 1,000-square foot lawn. people in the midwest are cleaning up after tornadoes and heavy flooding even as forecasters are calling for more severe weather today. in northeast texas, more than 20 people were injured and emergency teams are going door to dooring looing for victims in the town of -- going door to door looking for victims in the town of van. a tornado did touch down in denton, texas near dallas.

into the carolina, up the carolinas and the virginias, look at this monster system. there are a lot of warnings and watches. heavy rain. already the 6th wettest may in oklahoma city history. you have a long way to go. it looks like they will break it. colorado, getting a chill as a system comes out of pueblo. 40s and 50s on the temps and michelle said good morning, steve. good morning. it's a beautiful sunny morning in santa clara. it is. but it's cool. you combine that with a gust to almost 30 miles an hour at travis. about 30 at sfo. that's a cool pattern. west 24, west at hayward. the next system drops in come right down to the bay area and maybe give us rain on thursday. really? yes. sun and clouds. breezy at times. below average temps. it looks like the entire month will be this way. cool pattern in place. 50s, 60s coast and bay. upper 60s, 70s. that would be an 8-degree drop

7:24. a 74-year-old woman is back on solid ground now after being rescued from near the summit of mt. diablo. she fell and was hurt while in a remote part on the east side of the mountain. now, a chp helicopter was called in to help the contra costa county fire department yesterday afternoon. she was hoisted off the mountain, then transferred to an air ambulance that took her to a hospital. we had a couple of earlier reminders of how bad the fire

season can be. earlier, a fire started north of stinson beach. it took fire crews from marin county seven hours to put on the the flames -- to put out the flames. it burned a few acres but no homes were damaged. and a fire started on the road of the road near hillside boulevard and delores way in south san francisco. strong wind made it difficult to control the flames. so a helicopter and two planes were called in to help the fire. it took nearly two hours to put out the flames. but no one was hurt and no structures were damaged. the cause of the fire remains under investigation. well, thousands of soccer fans gathered in the south bay over the weekend for a very special sendoff to the u.s. team for the 2015 women's world cup. [ cheers ] >> oh, yeah. they are pumped up. women's national soccer team played ireland at the stadium

some caltrain riders can expect a more comfortable commute. alex savidge is checking out the changes that were put in place this morning. in minutes, he will tell us what's different. welcome, once again, to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. >> i'm dave clark. let's talk about weather and traffic. i ran out one more time. >> back and forth. >> it's just like you said it was. it's kind of a cool -- >> it will be a cool week. >> yeah. >> maybe is looking like maybe our first month since i believe february 2014. san francisco checked in with a below-normal average. this is a cool month. today is no exception. a lot of low clouds. not as much as the weekend coast and bay. it will be better. it will be thinner on the fog bank. there is a system to the north sweeping in low clouds and high clouds and we start 0 off 40s and 50s -- an we start off 40s and 50s. temperatures will struggle

today for many. west 21 gusting almost 30 at sfo. they've had gusts to 30 out at travis. what's causing this? this low is one reason. one coming in on thursday, it looks like it wants to give us rain. sun and clouds, below average temps. it's a cool pattern. 50, 6 -- 50s, 60s. sal? >> things are doing well open the san mateo bridge. haven't had any glitches regarding that same span. we'll start out and take a look at some of the other commutes. interstate 880 is getting more crowded driving north and south out of oakland. mostly north to downtown but also south as you drive down to hayward. looking at the bay bridge toll plaza, you will see traffic is going to be busy as you are driving to the pay gates, even the carpool lanes, we're getting slow. southbound 680 through contra costa county, slows at 42.

we had an earlier accident at rutgear. many caltrain riders will have an easier time getting to work starting today. alex savidge is at the san mateo station and says that's because those riders will have a little more space. alex? >> reporter: good morning to you. a lot of commuters on the peninsula, especially, they are applauding this move. caltrain has rolled out the new longer six-car trains. the first one was rolled out earlier on this morning. already these trains are making for a much more comfortable ride. and there it is. the first six-car train roned into the hillsdale station in san mateo at about 6:15 this morning. everyone hopped on board eager to have the extra room. that additional car will mean an additional 150 seats on the trains that are often

overcrowded, especially during the peak commute time. cool train has seen four years of ridership increases with an average of about 60,000 riders using the system each day. so that's why caltrain went out and bought 16 used train cars from l.a.'s metrolink system. four of the cars were put into service right away. the others will need more repair work and they will be rolled out when they are ready ride. riders tell me the cars are desperately needed because it can be tough to find a seat and space for your bike as well. >> it's welcomed. we've been waiting for extra cars. some of these morning lines that go southbound are really full. i see a lot of the people on 22nd street denied passage on their bikes, especially. >> reporter: but there is one small issue with these new longer trains. some stations have plat foeferms that are not --

platforms that are not designed to accommodate the six-car train. that means in some cases, the doors of one train car won'ten able to open up -- won't be able to open up and one minor hiccup here in caltrain, and they said they will be working to modernize those particular stations. just one issue here but overall, riders we talked to this morning, very happy that they have all of that extra room. >> they've been tweeting about it. i've seen a couple of tweets come up saying people are getting used to it. some people are packed in the five cars and they haven't realized that -- there is a sixth car. >> reporter: there you go. they have room to spread out a little bit to explore the rest of the train. >> exactly. that's alex savidge in san mateo. thank you. right now, the time is 7:35. back to the desk. >> thank you. the war on isis has gone viral. the terror group is using

social media and youtube videos to recruit fighters from here in the u.s. brian flores joins us now to explain how the u.s. is responding to this and whether it's working. good morning, brian. >> good morning. the u.s. state department hopes so. what's going on here, social media showdown between isis and the u.s. some are calling it the viral battleground. what u.s. terror analysts are seeing the videos once poorly made by isis, they are becoming sophisticated. officials say the production value has gone up. with it the effectiveness in reaching potential recruits, right here in the u.s. jay johnson discussed it over the weekend. >> very definitely in a new phase in the global terrorist threat, where the so-called lone wolf could strike at any moment. >> we have this phenomenon of the united states where they can be activated by the internet and really terrorism has gone viral.

>> that's why military bases across the u.s. are increasing security. the u.s. state department is turning to social media as well. the washington post chronicled the growth of a youtube account controlled by the government. it's called think again, turn away. some say for those who sign up for the travel group travel is inexpensive because you won't need a return ticket ever -- ticket. ever since the u.s.s. started the twitter accounts -- since the u.s. started the twitter accounts, there's been 16 videos produced. one of those has been seen at least 850,000 times. back to you, tori. >> thank you, brian. san francisco's mayor is pitching a plan to tear down part of interstate 280. according to the chronicle, mayor ed lee has asked transit frill officials -- officials to

tear down that section to move the caltrain tracks underground and building a station close to the proposed site for a warriors arena. it would also open up a huge area of the city for potential development. there was no price tag mentioned but officials say it would be billions of dollars. two private transit companies deeting with muni are -- competing with muni are offering plans for about twice the price of muni. chariot says two routes are making money. leap will not comment on the profitability. critics say the services are another sign of the growing gap gap -- sign of the growing gap. can we talk warriors? >> the warriors are finding

parents of a student who committed suicide in his dorm room with following a wrongful death suit. they claim school employees ignored clear warning signs hours before brendan dig's death. according to the lawsuit, he showed up drunk before. two resident advisers recognized him and let him in. two counselors showed up and advised him to seek counseling but the suit claims he never directed him to services. the school has not commented on the lawsuit. despite a big push from the federal government new numbers show there's been little change in the number of children participating in early education programs. the obama administration has made prekindergarten programs a centerpiece of its education

today will be below normal. kind of cool off the sierra. you can see clouds forming on the leeside. that's a strong jet stream for may and -- and a pretty good lift as the system from the north swings in the moisture. for us, some fog is there. but there's more of a break. a little bit of rain up in northern california. why? yeah, a little bit. shasta up to northeast california. we have low clouds. there's plenty there. coolest area to the rockies, very, very cool and warm, warm to hot, already 81 in atlanta. there's an issue with rain. it was ana. now it's just tropical depression. area of low pressure heading up to north carolina heading up to the virginias giving them a lot of rain. this severe weather is in texas, louisiana. this system will provide more severe weather. oklahoma city, already their 6th wettest may. we still have a long way to go.

there's projections of about four to six inches the next seven days from texas to almost oklahoma and -- and denver, there's flood issues. more snow coming out of pueblo. for a week, it's been almost a week. 40s and 50s on the tellles. it feels -- temps. it feels colder than that. 2 degrees cooler in mountain view. 3 in san jose. some areas are right where they were yesterday. the water temps changed and so did the weather pattern. they were above for the longest time. we get these lows dropping down o north -- dropping down out of the north. it's a westerly component. sfo, due west. almost gusting to 30. west at hayward. that's an onshore breeze. 50s, 60s through the interior. that's the low giving us our cool pattern now. a stronger one is moving in late wednesday into thursday. that one looks like it wants to bring us rain.

welcome back. at least two deaths reported after a powerful typhoon hit the northeastern tip of the philippines. it had wind up to 115 miles an hour. would have made landfall but it's losing power. several buildings are damaged. there's a lot of flooding and a threat of mudslide. two men were electrocuted. almost 3500 people were evacuated from coastal areas. most of the damage is about 900 miles north of where the typhoon two years ago hit. the death toll from the earthquake in nepal keeps rising. the death toll now, nearly 8,000. nearly 18,000 people were hurt in that quake. 366 are still missing. almost 300,000 homes have been zes stroitsed -- destroyed.

all right, sal? someone might be just joining us and not realize that the san mateo bridge opened without delay. it opened maybe about a half- hour early. so things are doing very well on that bridge. let's take a look at what we have now as we take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. it is backed up for a 20, 25- minute delay before you make it on the span. and then it's smooth sailing into san francisco. we're looking at interstate 880 as we promised. northbound is slow from san leandro near davis street. slows up into downtown oakland. most of the way. it gets better after the brick wall. if you are driving in concord, southbound 680 is slow from 242. westbound 580 off and on slow traffic from the alta poent pass all the way -- altamont pass all the way to dublin. the bridge opened ahead of schedule before 5:00 this morning. that's after it had been shut down all weekend for road repairs. this bridge usually carries 100,000 cars a day.

that causes a lot of wear and tear on the bridges. crews repaved a mile-long second. not all of the work is done. more work is scheduled for memorial day holiday, two weekends away. that's less than two weeks from now. put that in the back of your mind. don't be caught by surprise. >> back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. some oakland business owners say they are frustrated and fed up with the city. they are still waiting on help promised to them after violent mayday protests that left their property destroyed. tara moriarty is on oakland's auto row. tara, you just spoke to an auto shop owner who has found a creative way to express his feelings. >> reporter: when vandals came and destroyed the front windows of his business, he had to board them up. instead of just leaving them with plain wood, he painted over the board with a message.

the initial message read, opd, you have failed the city again. take a look. it tase, ryeiant -- it says, riot, tourism, we'll show you which block to trash. obviously a lot of anger and frustration. several merchants received a lot of damage. the hyundai dealership across the street had 70, 80 cars destroyed. windshields smashed in. one vehicle was hit on fire. the city held a meeting thursday night. officials talked about low- interest loans but so far merchants say there's been nothing concrete, just empty promises. >> big frustrations from, you know, on one hand the protests that are out of hand for no reason. the city doesn't do anything. there's still glass on the sidewalk. it's frast frustrating -- it's frustrating. we don't get any help here. >> reporter: business owners believe they shouldn't have to

save water, janine? >> reporter: well, they are no longer going to use bottled water that's bottled in california. now we ran into a starbucks customer. she pays attention to the labels that are on the back of the bottles. she won't buy it if it's from california because of the drought. starbucks is following suit. this comes after people were outraged that the coffee company was using water from california. they get the water from baxter. ethos announced it will no longer purchase water from there. the water will now come from pennsylvania. customers shared their thoughts. >> i think that makes sense. i mean, if you can find another source that's not as in bad of shape as we are, why not? i think as a businessman that would be a good decision.

san jose recently became the biggest city in california to ban filling up a pool which takes 20,000 gallons of water. homeowners may top off existing pools. pool industry, they say the restrictions are misguided. they a cite that says swimming pools use -- they site a study that says swimming pools use less water. a man was shot after he attended a memorial service for a friend in marin city. there were several 911 shots reporting shots fired on cole drive. when deputies arrived, they found the victim suffering from multiple gunshot wound. he was taken to marin hospital where he died during surgery. the victim is a 35-year-old man from vallejo. he was in marin city to attend the memorial service for a family friend who was shot and killed tw weeks ago -- two weeks ago. investigators are trying to figure out if this was a random

8:1. breaking news -- 8:12. breaking news from santa rosa. a manhunt is underway. police are investigating a homicide. now, police say they were called shortly after 3:00 this morning about a fight at a home. when the police arrived, they found the man who had been injured and was unconscious. that man was rushed to the hospital but died on the way to the hospital. now, police are telling ktvu they are actively searching for a man in the area around the home. this is in the 2800 block of red tail street. we're following this still- developing story and will bring you more information as soon as we get it in. also, happening -- also happening today, two police officers in mississippi killed during a traffic stop will be remembered at a citywide memorial service. 34-year-old officer benjamin deen pulled over a car for

speeding saturday night and then called for backup. well, when 25-year-old liquori tate arrived, the two officers walked up to the car together and someone inside that car started shooting. the mayor of hattiesburg, mississippi is calling on his city to help the families and each other as the investigation into that shooting continues. >> you can't have these kinds of events happening in the community. i think what we need to do is celebrate the lives of these two individuals. >> so far, four people have been arrested. but authorities are not saying much about a possible motive for the killings. they say the suspects are known felons. they will be in court later today. a small glitch at a high school graduation ceremony turned into chaos in georgia. the school's principal forgot to have the valedictorian give the speech. but when she tried to introduce him at the end of the event, people started leaving. that's when she lost it.

what's happening on 880? >> a little bit slow. this morning we have had a lot of slow traffic on 880 in both directions. northbound and southbound, northbound first, as you can see, it's a little bit slow past the coliseum. southbound is slow as you head down from hayward to union city. if you get to the bay bridge toll plaza, there's more room. some of the 880 ramps are getting better but there's been delays. once on the span, it's moving along well. northbound 101 at university avenue, palo alto, there is a crash there. it looks like -- no injuries. but traffic is going to be slow both directions from redwood city heading on down and northbound 101 from mountain view. 280 is a decent bet right now as you drive. 280 has no crashes reported along the stretch. let's go to steve in the weather center. >> thank you, sir. a lot of low clouds. higher clouds. breezy to downright windy pattern. sfo has gusts to 25, travis has

be -- season could be. it took fire crews from marin county seven hours to put the fire out. it burned three acres but no homes were damaged. on the peninsula, a wildfire burned 11 acres in the san bruno mountain state and county park. it started on a road near hillside boulevard and dolores way in south san francisco. the winds were strong. that made it hard to control the flames. so a helicopter and two planes were called in to help fight the flames. it took nearly two hours to put it out. but no one was hurt. no structures were damaged. the cause of that fire is still under investigation. well 48 driverless cars, they've been cruising along california roads since september and now we're learning that four of them have been in collisions. at least that's according to the associated press. three involved suvs that google outfitted with sensors and computer power.

first -- hiccup. but first, commuters are applauding this move. they have added six new trains. this may be one of them. i don't have time to count all of the cars here as we're live on television. but they've added six more trains during the popular commute times. as the trains roll out, they should make for a premiere ride. this was the first sixth car train that rolled into the hillsdale station in san mateo about 6:15 this morning. extra car means extra room. 150 more seats on trains that are often overcrowded. caltrain has seen four straight years of ridership increases with an average of 60,000 riders using the system each day. that's why they bought 16 used cars from l.a.'s metrolink system. now, four of those cars were put into use right away.

the others need more repair work and will be rolled out when ready. riders say these additional cars are desperately needed because it can be really hard to find a seat. >> i think it's very necessary. more people commuting from the city down there as we speak and vice versa. a lot of people are living in the peninsula and commuting down to work. it's necessary. >> reporter: but there is one issue with these longer trains. some caltrain platforms at certain stations are not designed to accommodate the longer trains. so that means in some cases, the doors of one train car at the very end won't be able to open and passengers instead will have to go to another car and exit through that car. as we bring you back here live, one, two, three, four, five. this is just a five-car train here. there you go. that's an instant count you get live often -- live on

preventing recruitment. pack to -- back to you. mayor ed lee has a plan to tear down part of the instate 280. according to the chronicle, mayor lee asked transit officials to consider tearing down the part of 280 that runs from mariposa street to king street. this plan include moving the caltrain tracks underground and building a station close to the proposed site for the new warriors' arena. but it will open up a big area of the city for potential development. no estimated price tag. but officials say it would be billions of dollars. two private transit companies completing with san francisco's -- competing with san francisco's muni are

it's becoming real. the captain is giving her instructions. we're all experiencing it vicariously by the helmet cam. >> and part of the training is to remain calm. he keeps telling her to relax and remain calm during that. >> absolutely. you could only imagine what it must be like to be faced with a ulwall of fire -- with a wall of fire. it's very loud, hot, smoky. yeah. the training kicks in. four months of being there, learning, doing it all. the muscle memory kicks in. you do what you are supposed to do and listen to your captain. but very, very dramatic footage. the interesting think about jessica, it runs in her family. her mother was a police officer. in fact, her father and stepmother both firefighters at well -- both firefighters as well. >> we listened to that earlier.

we have some breaking news to tell you about out of l.a.x. these are live pictures where a united express jet landed without its left rear tire. that looks like the plane right there in the middle of the runway. looks like it's kind of flat at the back. apparently this plane took off from monterey this morning. it did have a hard landing but there are no injuries reported at this time. you can see the crews there. the back of the plane, they are working on it. skywest plain. did an emergency landing -- skywest plean -- skywest plane. did an emergency landing. this is a story we'll follow on social media and bring you updates as we get them. yahoo! is suing a former employee
