morning. steve? . >> thank you, pam and dave. i was up here thursday. had a 30 miles per hour wind. felt like it was february or march. not as breezy. it's cloudy. it is cool. some people are up. looking at the rowers out, and kind of bundled up here for good cause. a lot of cloud cover over us. out feels like rain, unless like rain. we've had a little bit. calm conditions versus other day. there were practically white caps on the bay. we are looking over toward the alameda harbor as well. it'll be cool, it'll be breezy. some rain is developing. look at the entire state. most of this is focused to the south of us. we will see some of that moving along the san mateo, santa cruz comes.

. most of the morning commute i think will be fine. overall we are looking for a little bay rain. take whatever we get, though it is late in the ball game for uston rain season. send it over to sal now, who is in a warm, comfortable suite. >> i am, steve. good morning to you. we're going to start off and take a look at some of these commutes. we are going to see some slow traffic in many areas. let's begin now and take a look at the commute on the east shore freeway from the carcinas bridge to the mcarthur maze. traffic is moving along pretty well. 19-minute drive time. also looking at the commute at the bay bridge toll plaza, see the traffic continues to move along very nicely. northbound 87 near the airport at sky port, there has been a crash. trying to clear it out. there's a big backup on 87 just north of 280. so use a different way to get to the airport. i do want to mention that that

problem on 37 at lake vale, that park fire that we talked about, that has been cleared. at least 1 lane is open. driving on 37 heading west, it is going to be a slow morning out of snow ma county, out of solano county getting into snow ma. let's going back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. investigators with the national transportation safety board are back out this morning at the scene of the deadly amtrak train derailment in philadelphia. they are looking for close to help explain what caused that crash. ktvu fox two's brian flores in our newsroom with the nt sb press conference that wrapped up just about 90 minutes ago. >> a spokesman for the national transportation safety board spoke very abovely earlier this morning. their focus now is piecing together exactly what happened before the scene is cleared. now, want to go to new video from a local news chopper there in philly showing what crews are doing out there this morning. you see some heavy equipment out there removing some

of the wreckage and replacing the damaged tracks. five of the derailed cars have been cleared so far, but the other two are still on scene. they could be removed as soon as today. now, amtrak train 188, as we know, was headed from d.c. to new york city when it derailed tuesday night. what we learned is that a data recorder showed it was going at 106 miles per hour as it approached a tight curve on the tracks in philadelphia. >> we're saying that the speed limit through the curve is 50 miles an hour. however, right before the curve, the speed limit is 80. so 80 miles an hour speed limit, and then enter the turn, enter the curve the engineer is suppose today slow the train to 50. >> what we're hearing is that the ntsb says the disaster could have been prevented if there was that electronic control system that automatically slows speeding trains. well federal law requires that all passenger

railroads and major freight care years install the system by the end of the year. but congress is considering extending that glide to the year 2020 to give railroads more time to install this very expensive system. in the meantime, we also learned the amtrak engineer has been identified as 32-year-old brandon boostien. about five years ago, he was contracted to operate the cal train corridor between san francisco and san jose. caltrans said he was a contract worker and now contract employee. it is being reported the conductor has turned in blood samples. to his attorney, he told authorities he has no rex of the incident, but is also cooperating with law enforcement out there. meantime, sill several people unaccounted for. pam, back to you. >> going to be very interesting to hear more about this investigation as well. thank you, brian. 6:05 is the time. we checked weather. the bay area has the train

control system brian just mentioned, and cal train told us it is in the final stages of installing it. the $231 million system will operate at the end of the year, as required by current federal law. all of cal train's 50 locomotives and cab cars would be equipped. bart, however, is not required to have this technology. safety regulators have suggested it as an added layer of safety. police in palo alto released surveillance video of thieves using a car to smash into a blooming dale's department store. georgia mean de la vega joining us live. what's the very latest on this, georgia mean? >> reporter: dave, police don't have very much information to go on. from the surveillance video, you can't tell if these burglars are men or women. you can't tell what ethnicity they are. investigators are hoping, by release being footage, it may prompt someone to come forward with

information. here is the video of a red jeep cherokee bursting through the front doors of the bloomingdale stores. the thieves were wearing black hood days, run in, smashing the glass cases containing jewelry and watches. police say they were inside over 1 minute, but made off with a lot of loot. the thieves raced a i way, ducked the jeep on pal low alto avenue. in february, a similar crime happened at a camera store on california avenue. someone drove a mini van through the front doors, and stole equipment. >> we're surprised they're still at it. i hope police will catch them in the end. >> we don't know if it's related to the photography store at this time. we're still going to be looking at both type of situations, and see what we can find. >> reporter: ktvu went into blooming dale's yesterday, and took some still photos of the cases that were smashed. we counted six damaged cases. the staff there is still taking inventory of exactly -- police have combed the

inside of the stolen car for evidence, and are looking at other surveillance video from the sanford shopping center to see if they could provide more leads. they sure could use some help on this one. dave? . >> georgia mean de la vega, thank you. talk to you later. the group of suspects accused of robbing a cell phone store, now they're charged with trying to run over a mountainview police officer. police released a photo of the scene last night at grand park plaza center. the police officer was responding to a complaint at an a t and t store. the situation escalated, and police say the suspects hit one officer with their car. that officer was taken to the hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries. four of the suspects were taken into custody. a bay area rap artist and three other men, they filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against san francisco police. now, they're claiming they were harassed by the police while they were filming a music video in the bay view district back on march

8th. >> on your these. >> hands on your heads. >> now p lawsuit says every member of the group was subjected to an unreasonable search, seizure, and arrest at gunpoint. now, police say two of the men who were arrested included tiger williams of richmond, who's suspected of being a felon in possession of a loaded weapon. we have tried to contact san francisco police about the lawsuit. so far, they have not responded. protests are scheduled at u.s. post offices across the country today against postal service cuts. it's part of the day of action by the american postal workers union, which represents mail sorters and counter workers. their contract is set to expire next wednesday in the bay area there are demonstrations scheduled in oakland, san francisco, san jose, and walnut creek. coming up at 8:45, we're going to talk to actor and activist danny glover about his support for the postal workers and issues involved. also today, the state

senate is scheduled to vote on the controversial bill that would make it mandatory for school children in california to be vaccinated. opponents of the bill have staged protests at the state capital. the legislation would eliminate the personal or religious belief exception. a child could still be exempt based on medical problems, but unvaccinated children would have to be homeschooled. if the bill passes in the senate, it heads to the state assembly. time is 6:10. in case you missed it, the warriors won last night. and after that big win at home, now they're heading back to memphis this morning with a chance to close out the summer final series with the grizzlies. >> he makes it look so easy. the game started a little sloppy, but they got back on track. the warriors went on a 16-2 run, took a 1-point lead at the end of the 1st quarter, and they never trailed again. so they won game 598-78.

fourteen people were killed. nine of them were not from afghanistan. the american citizen who was killed has not been identified yet. a british citizen and italian and four people from india are also confirmed among the dead. jury deliberations continue today to decide the fate of the boston marathon bomber. jurors are deciding whether dzhokhar tsarnaev should live out the rest of his life in prison or if he should be put to death. now, during closing arguments, prosecutors called tsarnaev a remorse-free terrorist. but the defense argued he deserves a chance at redemption. this is the same jury that convicted tsarnaev last

month. by now they have had experience working with each other. because of that, legal experts say they will likely be able to reach a decision soon. time is 6:15. back here at home, a former san francisco political consultant charged with possessing and distributing child pornography is due back in court indication month. yesterday enrique pierce pled not guilty to six felony charges. he was taken back into custody, though, after a judge raised his bail to $400,000 at the request of the prosecution. they said the images he possessed included children as young as infants. the attorney for pierce says the city is taking this case too far, and there was no evidence presented pierce ever had contact with any of the victims. >> i think it's -- someone meets the scheduled bail that the city judges have set. the. he'll be posting the bail. we'll be fighting these charges. >> pierce faces five felony child pornography charges and a sixth felony

count of possessing stolen property. a city parking meter was found in his apartment. the oakland school district approved a measure to stop suspending students for certain bad behavior. the new policy goes into full effect in july next year. students can no longer be suspended for minor acts of defiance, such as wearing a cap or texting in class. suspensions will only bish sued for more serious offenses. now, the u.s. education department investigated complaints that oakland schools suspended african american students more than any other racial group. time is 6:17. as we go over to sal, i know you're big in social media. >> yes. >> and you're on facebook a lot. today is the birthday of mark zuckerberg. >> i see. >> he's how old; do we know? . >> i believe he's getting close to 30 now. >> he's getting old. boy. >> close to 30? it was a long time ago.

sometimes i'm so busy, i can't hear everything. >> not a lot going on. we have slow traffic. take a look at what we have at the bay bridge toll plaza from sky fox. we're getting a bird's eye view of all the waiting going on. you can see the metering lights, then the toll plaza in the middle of your shot here. traffic does extend to about the mac arthur maze. nothing is particularly bad. it is a typical morning delay of 10, 15 minutes before you make it on to the span unless, of course, you're using the carpool lane in which case it will be a lot better. for the most part, haven't seen anything major on the bridge it key thing steve said is we're not getting any rain for the morning commute most areas. really helping us out. would be a lot worse, i it, if there were some rain mixed in with this morning's commute. go to the san mateo bridge now, and you can see the traffic is moderately heavy heading out to the high-rise. getting heavier by the moment on the way to 101. not a lot going on in the south bay. been looking at 101. surprising it's not worse, but we'll take it as you drive up into sunny vale.

of the members of the board of supervisors, they're also going to be coming in on their bicycles to work this morning. kind of a fun event. a lot of happy, healthy people out here. >> heading over the bay bridge at 2:00 in the morning. time is 6:38. starting tomorrow, if you live in pleasanton, use too much water, you'll be hit with penalty. the city asking people to reduce their water use by 25% compared to 201. . now those who don't comply, you'll have to pay a fine. the amount will vary. depends on how much that customer went over the limit and for how long. the water bills could actually double or triple. recycled water that is normally dumped into the bay is being given away for

bloom dale had six cases broken into. the staff taking inventory on exactly how much was stolen. investigators at this point don't have much to go on. they were wearing black hood dayss. they're relying on people who may have information to give them a call so they can have some leads on this case. >> all right. thank you, georgia mean, for that update. 6:46 is the time. petaluma police also hoping someone will recognize the man who may be tide to two burglary there is. they were both caught on surveil lance video. the most recent happened at a bitech company on mcdonald boulevard on april 29th. police say that the man went inside business and put up some cover auls he found laying around so he could blend in wore employees who were working at the time. he then stole three laptops. now, a few days earlier, a man with a similar description was caught on surveil lance video, stealing noon cell phones. this was at an at&t store on

north mcdowel avenue. he is only described to be in his late 30s, 40s at this point with thick dark hair. time is 6:46. oakland raiders legend tim brown will help honor california's 911 hero this is morning at the state capital, and that will include 11-year-old jake richard there. jake was hiking in january with his dad near -- in solano county when his father fell 50 feet down a cliff. jake climbed down to his father and was able to get to his cell phone to call 911, but he didn't know his collect location. so a quick-thinking very creative dispatcher used facebook to find out exactly where they were hiking. that dispatcher will also be honored today. >> such a great story. such a great story. everybody can learn from that. 6:47 is the time. sal, what are you keeping an eye on? . >> looking at the toll plaza. there's a lot of slow traffic.

the search fees on for a second man in this surveil lance video last friday at the home in the evergreen neighbor. those two grabbed knives out of the kitchen and went through the house room by room. they actually tried to kick down a bedroom door when they realized two women and a baby were locked inside. they later left after one of the women called 911. well police in san francisco are trying to call attention to what they are calling a fencing scam. now, it involves two contractors who show up to a house to fix fences, but actually they are robbing older single women. investigators say the men hit six times in a single week this month, telling people they were called in
