new this morning, the president of afghanistan is condemning an overnight taliban attack that killed 14 people at a kabul hotel, including at least one american. these are pictures of afghan police officers guarding the park place hotel where the attack happened last night. a total of 14 people were killed, including two women. nine of the victims were foreigners, not from afghanistan. police say taliban attackers stormed the hotel as it was hosting a party and then opened fire. the u.s. victim has not been identified yesterday. a british citizen, an italian and four people from india are confirmed dead. about a dozen people unaccounted for this morning after tuesday night's deadly crash and derailment of an amtrak train in philadelphia. seven people were killed. the rescue crews think that toll will go higher as they continue to search for more victims who may still be trapped and buried in the wreckage. kusa fox two asinine flores in

our newsroom now. focus is piecing together what happened before the scene is cleared, which could happen sometime today. now, i want to go to video now from -- this is a local news chopper in philadelphia showing what crews are doing out there this morning. you see some heavy equipment removing some of the wreckage, replacing some of the damaged tracks. five of the derailed cars have been cleared, but the other two still on scene. amtrak train 188 was headed from d.c. to new york city when it derailed tuesday night. what we have learned is that a data recorder showed it was going at least 106 miles per hour as it approached a tight curve on the tracks in philadelphia. >> the speed limit through the curve is 50 miles an hour. however, right before the curve the speed limit is 80.

so 80-mile-per-hour speed limit. and then to enter the turn, enter the curve, the engineer is supposed to slow the train to 50. >> reporter: they are saying that the engineer actually did that, slowed it down to 102 miles per hour. the ntsb says the disaster could have been prevented if there was that electronic control system that automatically slows speeding trains. federal law requires that all passenger railroads and major freight carriers install the control system by the end of the year. but congress is considering extending that deadline to the year 2020 to give railroads more time to install this very expensive system. meantime, we have also learned the amtrak engineer has been identified as 32-year-old brandon bostain. he worked for amtrak here in the bay area about five years ago. he was contracted to operate the caltran corridor between san francisco and san jose. he was a contract worker and not a caltrain employee. it's being reported that the conductor has voluntarily turned

in blood samples as well as his cell phone to authorities and through his attorney he also has no recollection of the incident, but is cooperating with authorities. meantime, still several people unaccounted for this morning. dave barks to you. >> brian flores, thank you. time is now 7:07. a bay area rap artist and three other men have filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against san francisco police. they are claiming the police harassed them back on march 8th while they were filming a music video in the bayview district. >> hands on your head! >> this lawsuit claims every member of this group was subjected to an unreasonable search, seizure, and arrest at gunpoint. police say two men were arrested, including taj williams of richmond who police say is suspected of being a felon who had a loaded weapon. we have reached out to san francisco police about this lawsuit. so far there has been no

response. it is 7:07. protests are scheduled at u.s. post offices across the country today against postal service cuts. it's part of a day of action by the american postal workers union which represents mail sorters and counter workers. their contract is set to expire next wednesday. in the bay area there are demonstrations schedule inside oakland, san francisco, san jose, santa roads a, petaluma and walnut creek. coming up at 8:45 i will talk to actor and activist danny glover about his support for the postal work he is. the number of people filing for unemployment benefits dropped last week. the decline was enough to put the four-week average of applications at just under 272,000. that's the lowest level in 15 years. very low levels are considered evidence that americans are enjoying solid job security and that employs are confident enough not to lay off workers.

that's good news for the overall economy, but some investors might worry the fed will boost interest rates on the strong economic news. i am just checking right now. it appears investors aren't worried at the moment. the dow is up 127. the nasdaq up 27. the s&p is up 1 into 7:07. happening today expect to see many, perhaps thousands more bicyclists on the roads today than normal. today is bike to work day in the nine bay area counties. tara moriarty is joining us live in san francisco. you are where cyclists may stop and take a break as they head off to work. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. that's right. we are at 17th and valencia now. just a couple of minutes ago we were at the 24th street bart station. about 300 cyclists all took off in mass down mission street. they were headed down the peninsula it to go to work. a lot of people from facebook, those types of companies.

they are looking very fresh faced and ready for exercise. you can see this is one of the energizer stations where people can stop and get a snack and then sort of go on their way. they were looking ominous, the skies. we were predicting rain. so far riders have managed to avoid any rain. organizers expect between 100 to 200,000 people from nine bay area counties to pedal to work and back today. it not only helps the environment by reducing carbon emissions caused by cars, but also promotes good health. are you trying to lure more people to the sport? >> today is definitely a day we hear from so many people that this was the thing that got them going again after not touching a bike for years and years. there is something infectious that happens today. and, yeah, it get people to rediscover something that again is so much fun and so convenient. >> reporter: along their route again riders can grab drinks,

welcome back to mornings on 7. it's 7:15. an orchestra in minnesota making history. they are to first to play in cuba. now, this orchestra has more than 100 musicians. they are going to perform this coming weekend in havana. now, besides those concerts the orchestra will visit a high school and a music school and they will be playing alongside some young cuban musicians. back here at home the oakland school district approved a measure to stop suspending students for certain bad behavior. the new policy takes effect in july of next year. students will no longer be suspended for minor acts of defines like wearing a cap or sending text messages in class.

suspensions will only be issued for more serious offenses. the u.s. education department investigated complaints that oakland schools suspended african-american students a lot more than other ethnic groups. it is 7:16. there is a warning for local boaters to be on the lookout for three humpback whales swimming in the bay. sky fox captured two of the whales yesterday. people at the marine sanctuary say a third was spotted close to sausalito. the coast guard is asking boaters to be careful and avoid hitting the whales. boaters should also know that it is illegal to follow or approach the whales. >> that's a law? >> handle it very, very carefully. yeah, it's beautiful to see from a distance. >> all right. time 7:17. hey, sal, you and our ktvu spy there, you are watching the toll plaza? >> yeah. i mean, i thought for sure that was going to be a temporary thing. that spider is living there. >> kids really like it. but you seem to like it, too.

so i think -- >> i am a kid at heart. i happen to know when that spider is on, my little girl, the older one, just loves it. she makes mom go back on the dvr a few times. >> very cute. >> it's true. hey, good morning, everyone. let's the take a look at the commute now. we are going to to start there, as tori mentioned, at the toll plaza. spider or not, there is some slow traffic. there is the spider on the right-hand side if you want to look at it. it's climbing up to the top. it's climbing up to the traffic authority sign. but the traffic is backed up for about a 20 to 25-minute delay, especially on 580. it's going to take you a little bit to get to the bridge. you have to be waiting at the metering lights as well. i want to mention northbound 101 not doing very well at all at tully road. it turned out to be a non- injury accident. that's the good part. the bad part is it was in the lanes for a long time. northbound 85 is an alternate. it's a little bit slow. i would use that if you are in the south valley. if you are after 280, i think this is good for you because

than sooner. there have been a couple of lightning strikes associated that band west-southwest. so it's all rotating in. a lot of cloud cover. had a couple of little guy showers lafayette this morning. berkeley a little bit. there will be more on the way. most of the morning commute will be fine. you can see the whole system rotating in. already lighting up fresno to baker field. southern california is expecting maybe two inches of rain between now and saturday. morning rain. possible thunderstorms here. a few breaks in these clouds help. some areas may not get any rain at all or a trace. .05-inch. and a winter storm warning kicks in 11:00 this morning. our system is moving in. most of the energy though will favor areas to the south. about san francisco, oakland south, but san jose, santa cruz mountains. afternoon thunderstorms. a couple breaks in the clouds. that would certainly help. the energy rotating up. this is well on its way to southern california. not for us. it will keep us cool.

a few 40s. a lot of 50s. cloud cover responsible for that. 57 the warmest lows we have seen in a while at sfo and oakland. water temps are cold, but they have bumped up about one degree. i think that's because of that system on the coast, the cloud cover and south wind helping warm that up a little bit. sierra not much yet, but it will later on. in fact, the winter storm warning morning is the best time to go if if you can go. 5 a.m. tomorrow could be a foot of snow in the higher elevations. once it gets its act together it will linger in friday. there is the band. getting closer, but look where it is. it's san mateo coast, santa cruz monteray. could be showers embedded within that. possible thunderstorms this afternoon. breaks in the clouds would help that. mostly cloudy. some rain. cool pattern though.

looks better. meantime, there might be a few little hit and miss little guy showers. that's the line getting closer now. next couple of hours, most of the morning commute will be fine. a lot of cloud cover. see everything rotating in. most of in energy heading towards central and southern california where it's going to light up. a lot of 50s. more so than we have seen due to the cloud cover and a southerly breeze. the rain is on its way. embedded in that could be hefty amounts, isolated thundershowers and a few lightning strikes observed off monteray. san jose south looks to be better. this afternoon possible thunderstorms north and east. get things juiced up a little bit here. staying cool, though with a lot of 60s. well below normal temperatures. sal, what do you have at 7:32? >> a look at the bay bridge. it hasn't been that bad. as a matter of fact, we have the help of sky fox looking at it for us. and you can see the traffic is -- there is the pan toon -- traffic is going to be backed up at the toll plaza for a little bit of a delay. we will come back to that.

looks like the chopper is getting into position here. all right. let's move along it the next picture. san mateo bridge, the traffic here is going to be moderately heavy. i was looking at something on the bring. looked like there could have been a problem. but, no, there isn't a problem. it's just slow traffic. san jose has been bad. northbound 101 a non-injury accident that blocked lanes and traffic continues to move slowly on 101. 580 not that bad to livermore and pleasanton. yet another smash-and-grab crime. this time at the high end store bloomingdale's in palo alto. police have released surveillance video of a stolen suv smashing through the doors, hoping this will help track down the thieves. ktvu fox 2's janine de la vega. are you noticing more security there this morning? >> reporter: as soon as we pulled up earlier this morning i did notice more security. you can see actually there is

one of their patrol cars here in the parking lot. they are normally here in the early morning hours, but it's a big mall. so it appears they weren't near bloomingdale's when a group of burglers plowed into the store. take a look at this video. you can see the red jeep cherokee back into the doors of bloomingdale's on the el camino side of the store. this happened at 4 a.m. yesterday. then you see the three thieves who are all wearing black hoodies run in. they use a sharp object to smash through the glass cases, taking jewelry and watches. they run away and hop into the jeep and race off. police found that the jeep was dumped later on palo alto avenue. it had been reported stolen the day before. >> we are hoping that some of the stuff that we got from the vehicle and hopefully with other surveillance from that area, stanford has several video cameras, surveillance in that area, that we might be able to get some more information. >> reporter: investigators say the burglars were inside for

just over one minute, but they made off with a lot of expensive goods. ktvu took still photos of inside the store. it appears six cases were hit. police are looking into the possibility it may be connected to another burglary that took place in a camera store on california avenue in february. in that case a minivan went through the front door. police are looking for tips on this latest case. they can't make out what ethnicity they are. they can't tell if it's men or women. and back out here live i do want to mention that we're being kept on this side of the mall, bloomingdale's, but around the corner on the el camino side, that is actually where the thieves used that jeep cherokee to smash into it. now there is a black piece of plywood covering up where that broken doorway is. that definitely needs to be fixed. it's something that probably shoppers may notice today if they come in. tori. >> janine de la vega outside

bloomingdale's. thank you. time is 7:35. the driver and the only survivor of a single car crash in gilroy that killed four people now facing drunk driving charges. investigators say 24-year-old anthony 'em blownen could be charged with vehicle manslaughter. late tuesday night he was driving four friends near the gilroy outlet stores and failed to follow a turn in the road. his car crashed into a dry creek bed. all four passengers died, including three girls who were set to graduate from high school next month. >> knowing that she had three weeks left, she would have graduated with us. she should have been there with us. >> now, the girls all went to different high schools in the gilroy school district. grief counselors are helping the students as well as the school staff cope with their deaths. well, the race for the san francisco sheriff's office is

heating up. the incumbent kicked off his re-election campaign last night. he hosted this event at the delanty street restaurant. the sheriff is hoping to keep his job when the voters go to the polls november 3. last month a judge granted his request to remove from his record a misdemeanor conviction that stemmed from a domestic violence incident with his wife. the sheriff's opponent is former chief deputy sheriff vicki hennessey. she, too, held a campaign party. 7:37. warriors on the verge of advancing to the western conference final after a huge win over the memphis grizzlies last night at oracle that gave them a 3-2 series lead. the ktvu fox 2 reporter alex savage is live at the oakland airport where the players are about to leave for memphis. more an what the players say it will take to close out this series.

i am curious what they are saying, alex. >> reporter: in a few hours they are going to board a plane at oakland airport, head to memphis for game six tomorrow night. all the players agree that their defense has been the key in these past two wins. both of them blow-out victories. and when the d is there, the offense gets rolling. >> curry for three! >> reporter: steph curry was dialed in from beyond the arc last night, knocking down 63s and finishing with six steals, which was a playoff career high. his fellow splash brother snapped out of a shooting funk last night. klay thompson led all scorers with 21 points in game five. and after a slow sloppy start at oracle for the warriors, they then want on a huge run to end the first quarter and they never looked back from that point. they won by 20. 98-78. the victory gave the warriors a 3-2 lead in this best of seven

series. but the players know it will be tough to close this thing out down in memphis. >> they won't make it easy for us. obviously, we expect it every game. it's not easy to get a win. we expect a dogfight and a battle. those are the best games to win. >> reporter: so game six is in memphis tomorrow night. that gets started at 6:30 our time. and the warriors are hoping, they are planning to close things out down there at the grind house tomorrow night. but if the grizzlies manage to win they would force a game seven. fortunately for the warriors, that would be back home at oracle. and that would be on sunday with a tip-off at 12:30. and again the team taking off from memphis in just a few hours. they will be boarding the plane about 9:30 and then taking off at 10:00 this morning. >> i am sure every warrior fan would be happy not to have a game seven. >> reporter: we do not want to see them coming back to oracle. it is 7:39.

fencing scam. it involves two contractors. they show up to a house to fix fences. but actually they are robbing older single women. investigators say the men hit six times in the single week this month. they tell the residents they were called by the landlord to work on a fence. one victim tells us that while one man distracted her in the garden, the other one got into the house and stole jewelry given to her by her son and late husband more than 50 years ago. >> no, no, no, no. >> they take my bracelets, three gold rings with diamonds. >> we call this a fencing scam. literally a fencing scam. >> yeah, investigators say it appears the robbers did their research ahead of time to find out when the victims are home alone. police are advising residents contact a neighbor and that fencing company before you let anyone inside your home. it looks like starbucks is brewing up a new business plan. the seattle-based coffee house

let's go to sal now. >> all right. steve, good morning to you. we are looking at a commute where traffic is going to be not too bad. certainly some slowing out there. we are going to start off with a look at the east bay commute and eastshore freeway from the carquinez bridge to the macarthur maze. 30 minutes. not as bad as yesterday. and no major slowdowns. when you get to the bay bridge all the approaches are backed up, including the 880 ramp. that's not that great right now. a 20 to 25-minute delay before you make it onto the bridge. i want to continue to talk about san jose. 85 is filled in. 87 slow from earlier problems. 280 is now backing up out of downtown into coupe teenio. an earlier accident on 101. give yourself extra time. happily, if you are getting on the freeway in sunnyvale or mountain view, it's not as bad as it normally is. let's go back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. investigators for the national transportation safety board are back out this morning at the scene of tuesday's

deadly amtrak train derailment in philadelphia. their focus to talk with crew members of the train and to piece together exactly what happened. ktvu fox 2's brian flores is in our newsroom with a bit of good news in connection with the derailment. >> reporter: we understand that earlier today some of the injured who-hospitalized from the train were treated and released. but there is still just heavy concern this morning as about a dozen people are reportedly still unaccounted for. i want to go to some video of crews clearing track and removing any of the debris from amtrak train number 188 which derailed on tuesday traveling from d.c. to new york city. there was an earlier press conference with an ntsb spokesperson who said that they will be examining the data recorders, video cameras on board the train, doing site distance testing and a brake test. anything to pinpoint the exact cause. what we know is that the train was traveling at 106 miles per

hour just before a curve in which the recommended speed was supposed to be 50 miles per hour. seven people were killed. dozens were injured. as crews continue to search through debris and piece together what happened some of the injured, at least according to the hospital spokes people, they are doing better. >> we still have 16 patients in the hospital this morning. i think if you were here in the afternoon yesterday, you remember that we had 23 at the end of the day yesterday. so it's good that seven folks have left. one went to another hospital to a lower level of care. >> reporter: meantime, family members of those killed continue to mourn. some of the victims killed have been identified. one of the people killed was derek griffeth pictured here. he was the dean of students at medgar college in brooklyn. the ntsb says the disaster could have been prevented if there was that electronic control system that automatically slows speeding trains. federal law requires that all passenger railroads and major freight carriers install the control system by the end of the year, but congress is considering extending the

deadline to 2020 to give railroads more time to install the expensive system. now, as for the conductor, 37-year-old brandon bostain, through an attorney he says he doesn't recall the moments before the derailment. we have also learned that he worked for amtrak here in the bay area for about five years and was a caltrain contract employee. this morning he is cooperating with authorities. but as for today, still plenty of unanswered questions, especially for the family members of the victims. tori, back to you. >> yeah, certainly a lot of unanswered questions. a lot of investigation going on. thank you, brian. it is 8:05. we checked whether the train control safety system is being used here in the bay area. caltrain told us it is in the final stages of installing it. the transit agency says the $231 million system will operate by the end of the year as required by current federal law. all of cal trains' 50 locomotives and cab cars would be equipped. bart, however, is not required

to have this technology, although federal safety regulators are suggesting it as an added layer of safety. 8:05. new this morning the president of afghanistan condemning an overnight taliban attack where 14 people were killed at a hotel in kabul, including at least one american. now, afghan police officers are now guarding the park palace hotel where that attack occurred. >> 14 people were killed, including two women. nine victims were foreigners. not from afghanistan. now, police say the taliban attackers stormed this hotel and opened fire while a party was taking place. we don't yet know the name of the u.s. citizen who was killed. also, among the dead a british citizen, an italian and four people from india. 8:06. also new this morning livermore police are looking for a gunman who fired at an officer early this morning. police were called to a reported shooting in the area of chestnut and north first streets just before 1 a.m. an officer approached the suspicious man at the scene.

police say without provocation he fired several shots at the officer who was able to duck into his patrol car to avoid the gunfire. police set up a perimeter, but so far the gunman has not been caught. a group of suspects accused of defrauding a cell phone store is now charged with trying to run over a mountain view police officer. police tweeted a photo of the scene last night at grant park plaza shopping center. the officer was responding to a complaint at an at&t store. the situation escalated and police say the suspects hit one officer with their car. the officer was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. four suspects were taken into custody. a bay area rap artist and three other men have filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against san francisco police. they claim police harassed them on march 8th while they were filming a music video in the bayview district. >> everyone on your knees!

>> the lawsuit claims every member of the group was subjected to an unreasonable search, seizure, and arrest at gunpoint. police say two men were arrested, including taj williams, who is suspected of being a felon with a loaded weapon. we have reached out to san francisco police about the lawsuit. so far they have not responded. tori, time is 8:08. new this morning the labor department says the number of people filing for first-time unemployment benefits dropped last week. and it was enough to put the four-week average of applications at just under 272,000, which is the lowest level in 15 years. now, very low levels are considered a sign that americans are enjoying solid job security and that employers are feeling confident enough not to lay people off. 8:08. after a big win at home the warriors are heading back to memphis this morning with a chance to close out their series with the grizzlies.

welcome back to "mornings on 2". it's 8:26. the oakland school district approved a measure to stop suspending students for certain bad behavior. this new policy takes effect in july of next year. students can no longer be subs spended for minor acts of defines like wearing a cap or sending a text message in class. students will be suspended or

serious offenses. the u.s. education department investigated complaints that oakland schools suspended african-american students more than othereth mcgroups. facebook is boosting the pay of lower wage workers. it will require that its contractors pay a minimum wage of $15 an hour. that would include employees like janitors and cooks. facebook says anyone that does substantial work for the company as a contractor should also get 15 paid days off for holidays, vacation, and sick time. some of the changes already went into effect on may 1st at the headquarters in menlo park. time is 8:27. a very innovative way to keep lawns very lush, very green in the east bay. after the break the free water giveaway and the catch that's involved. plus, the doves, they are on a roll. another huge win for the warriors last night in their playoff series. we will tell you about the

has the latest on where the investigation is. >> reporter: police don't have much to go on right now. from this surveillance video you can't tell if these burglers are men or women or what ethnicity they are. investigators are hoping by releasing this footage it may prompt someone to come forward with information. here is video from 4 a.m. yesterday morning of a red jeep cherokee bursting through the frondose of the bloomingdale department store. the thieves run in and smash the glass cases containing jewelry and watches. police say they were inside for a minute but they made off with a lot of loot. the thieves then raced away and dumped the jeep on palo alto avenue. police say it had been reported stolen the day before. in february a similar crime happened at a camera store on california avenue. someone drove a minivan through the front doors and stole equipment. >> we are surprised they are still at it. i hope the police will catch them in the end. >> we don't know if it's related to the photography store at this time. we are still going to be looking at both types of situations and see what we can find.

>> reporter: ktvu went into the store and took still photos of the cases smashed in bloomingdale's. six damaged cases. the staff is taking inventory of exactly how much was stolen. police have combed the inside of the stolen car for evidence and are looking at other surveillance video from the shopping center to see if it can provide more leads. but they should could use some help from the public on this one. reporting from palo alto, janine de la vega, ktvu fox 2 news. 8:35. the driver and the only survivor of a single car crash in gilroy that killed four people now face drunk driving charges. investigators say 24-year-old anthony embronin could be charged with vehicular manslaughter. tuesday night he was driving four friends near the gilroy outlet stores and did not follow a turn in the road. his car rolled into a dry creek bed. all four passengers died, including three girls who were due to graduate from high school

next month. >> knowing that she had three weeks left, she would have graduated with us. she should have been there with us. >> those girls all went to different high schools in the gilroy school district. grief counselors are helping the students as well as the school staff cope with their deaths. well, one of the suspects in the san jose home invasion turned himself in to police. now, police say the 17-year-old is being held at juvenile hall. the search is going on for a second man seen in this surveillance video. last friday at a home in the evergreen neighborhood this happened. the men grabbed knives out of the kitchen and went through the house room by room. they tried to kick down a bedroom door when they realized two women and a baby locked themselves inside. they ran away after one of the women called 911. recycled water that's normally dumped in the bay is being given away for free at.

dave. time is 8:48. let's check traffic one more time. sal is keeping an eye on our commute this morning. how things are happening on the roads. >> that's right. it's pretty slow out there. i want to let you know that traffic has not improved in some areas where we'd like like it to. in the east bay it has been slow. people are asking me, what time does it normally improve at the bay bridge? that answer is not certain because some days by too time it's much lighter. today it is not. if you are trying to get into san francisco, it's a 25 to 30-minute delay. this is san francisco itself. northbound 101 looks okay at the 80 split. the peninsula, we can look at our maps very quickly, and southbound 101 and northbound 101 slow near the candlestick area and slow again in san mateo as you approach 92. the san mateo bridge has improved. let's go to steve and the weather. thank you, sir. most of -- i wanted to play this
