the bombing, the trial, all because they live here. they don't walk the streets of boston every day. so when the death by injection sentence broke, they weren't expecting to be overcome with emotion, but say they were. the second bomb went off. young aaron hern went down. the 14-year-old from martinez was cheering on his mom that april day and on this day, aaron's mother says she is pleased with dzhokhar tsarnaev being condemned to death. >> i guess my first reaction was kind of good, i'm glad. >> reporter: tsarnaev stood with his hands folded, head slightly bowed, no reaction upon hearing his fate. his lawyers had no comment as they left the courtroom, but they maintain their client was led astray by his dom nearing older brother, tamerlan. >> the defendant was an adult who came to believe in an

ideology of hate and he expresses those beliefs by killing, maming and mutilating innocent americans on patriot's day. >> reporter: boston's police commissioner said he is satisfied with the sentence, along with the message it sends to terrorists. >> they are not going to blow up our marathon, not going to blow up our city and not inflict any type of terror in our country. >> reporter: three people were killed. aaron hern, one of the 260 who were injured, his mom says news of the sentence was quick to bring back memories, yet rein force also how she feels about tsarnaev. >> you just get that awful feeling in your gut all over again. don't wish him well in any way. probably don't want to see him live another day. >> reporter: years of appeals are likely before lethal injection would be carried out in this case. julie, i do want to mention the herns say aaron is doing well, playing a number of sports, and is about 95% back to health. >> so good to hear. mike, thank you.

well, there have been only three federal executions since 1976. probably the most well known, timothy mcveigh, the 33-year- old convicted of the oklahoma city bombing. he was executed in terre haute, indiana on june 11, 2001. a few days later, juan raul garza, convicted drug trafficker and murderer was also executed. one-time war hero lewis jones, jr. was executed in 2003 after being convicted of kidnapping, rape and murder. and you can go to ktvu.com for more on today's sentencing, including raw video of our interview with the hern family you'll find that link near the top of our home page. today's sentencing in the boston marathon bombing case comes as tens of thousands of runners are preparing for the bay to breakers race here in san francisco. ktvu's david stevenson is in the city tonight with how authorities are working to protect runners and spectators from a potentially similar attack. >> reporter: frank, you can see

security barricades dropped off ahead of sunday's race. police and race organizers say they remain especially mindful of race security two years after the boston marathon bombing. it's a race that draws serious runners from around the world, along with a lot of whacky costumes. >> it's the best race in the world. it's so fun. such a fun day. >> reporter: thousands of runners today picked up their race materials for the 104th bay to breakers. the 12k foot race stretches from the city's financial district near the san francisco bay out to ocean beach. 50,000 registered runners are expected this year, ranging from pros to amateurs. >> once i cross the finish line, my life changed. since then, i never stop running. >> reporter: others show up simply for the spectacle of it all. >> one year there was a group that was all the characters of alice and wonderland. they looked really professional. >> reporter: runners readied themselves for the race today,

as the boston marathon bombing sentencing was announced. >> we don't allow backpacks on the course unless they are clear. >> reporter: two years later, the police message to runners and spectators remains if you see something, say something. >> if you see anything that's out of the ordinary, anything that's suspicious, call 911 or notify a police officer. >> security is tighter than ever before, but other than that, had it's a great time, great race, lot of fun to be here. >> reporter: the race kicks off at 8:00 a.m. on sunday here at howard and beal streets. police are asking people if they are coming to run or watch, to take public transit. that message comes through, if you see something, say something on sunday. frank, julie? >> david, thank you. we are following developing news right now in the east bay city of hercules. that's where a grass fire has moved dangerously close to the home. it started shortly before 4:00 this afternoon on valley road, just across the street from

hercules high school. flames reached the fence of one yard. a good samaritan grabbed a hose and tried to put out the fire. >> trying to protect the house. that's all. >> how do you think you did? >> i thought it did pretty good. didn't get the house! >> firefighters arrived and began battling those flames. one home sustained damage, minor damage, we're told. officials tell us no one has been hurt. now to a frightening situation on a vta bus today in the south bay. a passenger tried to attack the driver. john sasaki has more with what the driver says happened and also the bystanders who came to the driver's rescue. >> reporter: ron brandon has been driving for valley transportation for 16 years and it's clear he doesn't rattle easily. >> i was surprised i kept my cool. >> reporter: on thursday about 5:30, he was driving his number 68 bus south through morgan hill when he says one of his passengers lost it. >> he had -- his weapon was a pen. >> dehave a pen? >> oh, yeah, he had a pen. any time he got a little too

close, i was, like, no, i don't think we want to do that! >> call 911! >> reporter: this is cell phone video of the volatile situation. >> i heard some yelling. i looked over and i see this guy with a pen trying to stab the bus driver. >> reporter: art and two of his employees at the nearby restaurant stepped in. >> i started yelling at him, get off the bus! get off the bus! leave the guy alone! >> reporter: the man you see with one leg, swinging his crutch at the mentally ill man. >> he grabbed like a squeegee, trying to hit me with it. i said -- i grabbed it and whacked him with it. >> reporter: his worker got on the bus and pushed the man off. >> those are the heroes. i'm glad they were there. >> reporter: the man identified as 34-year-old daniel pacheko of gilroy, ran away before being arrested. >> because of what he was saying about people killing him, about his actions ahead of time, waving things in midair, we believe that he was going

through some type of mental health episode. >> reporter: no one was hurt. not only did this veteran driver return to work the next day, he continued with his route immediately after this incident happened. >> it's over with. no need to be frightened or anything. >> reporter: police say pacheko is in a mental health facility and might avoid criminal charges because of his mental health problems. john sasaki, ktvu fox 2news. a young vallejo man has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of a vallejo high school student. 19-year-old zachary crowell is in the solano county jail tonight. he was arrested early this morning, after 17-year-old max rusk was shot and killed yesterday on a path near jesse bethel high school in vallejo. outside the school, a memorial for rusk continues to grow. today, his mother told us she tried several times to take her son out of the school because he didn't feel safe there. >> and i just wanted my son to get out of that school and i wanted home schooling for him and they wouldn't do it.

>> i know life goes on. he doesn't want me to cry, but it's kind of hard when you miss something like that. it's such a privilege to be his father. >> the superintendent declined to speak about the comments made by rusk's mother, but did say nine security guards work on campus to help keep students safe. the oakland police department just wrapped up its fourth annual open house. community members were invited to meet with officers in front of police headquarters in downtown oakland, kind of like a block party with food and festivities. the chief says events like these help bridge the gap and achieve the goal of community policing. >> we have our top jobs, working on the relationship with the community, bonding with the community, having a good relationship. so this is a great opportunity to do that. >> the chief also says that events like this help with the department's goal of local recruiting. bay area transit officials are considering an unusual approach to try to ease the

gridlock in san francisco during the morning commute. they may allow buses to travel the wrong way on the bay bridge. the idea is to turn the far left eastbound lane heading toward oakland into a buses- only westbound lane that would head into san francisco. the plan would require a movable barrier to prevent head- on collisions and a special off- ramp leading to the transbay terminal. the total cost could top $170 million. we got a big thumbs-up today from an ac transit bus driver who frequently crosses the bridge. >> we don't have to worry about it at all. don't have to worry about slamming on brakes, don't have to worry about motorcyclists or anything because it's ours and ours alone! >> for now, the idea is just a concept and wouldn't become reality any time soon. the studying and planning phase alone is expected to take about a year and a half. we are monitoring reports tonight about a fire at the giants game in cincinnati. we'll have more on that a little later on in sports. >> but up next, giants fan

. he's a man with a message. bryan stow, the giants fan beaten into a coma at dodgers stadium four years ago, is sharing his experience with hundreds of students. >> i mean, i survived for a reason. i'm finding my purpose again. >> bryan stow barely survived, but now as you just heard there, he speaks very well. >> for the first time, bryan stow shared his experience with young students in scott valley and is using it as a message about bullying. we have his story new at 6:00. ♪ >> reporter: to the song "eye

of the tiger," you could say bryan stow's journey is coming full circle. not long ago, not many people imagined he would be doing this. >> i'm bryan stow and i have a story to tell you. >> reporter: sharing his story of survival in front of hundreds of school kids. >> these men were adult bullies. i suffered severe brain damage, as you can see from the scar on my head. >> reporter: speaking about his 2011 attack when two dodgers fans beat him into a coma outside dodgers stadium. >> you need to stand up to bullying. speak to an adult. lead by example with your own actions and words. >> reporter: bryan's message in all of this, it didn't have to be this way. so he's teaching these students at a young age in hopes of preventing what happened to him to happening to anyone else. >> his story really inspired me, you know, to look out for bullying in more areas and stop it when it starts to happen. like bryan, if someone had stood up to those bullies when they were younger, it could have changed his entire life.

said about them, to call him inspiring. let's talk about our weather now, bringing in meteorologist mark tamayo. kind of thought it was going to rain again today. a little overcast? >> yeah, lots of overcast. we've had a few showers develop around lake county. we've been watching that activity. for the most part, lingering clouds out there, low clouds and fog. of course if you're a runner, bay to breakers coming up this weekend, mid-may, a very exciting time in san francisco. the event, of course, is sunday. right now at fort mason center, the bay to breakers expo. that's where chief meteorologist bill martin is standing by. he has more goodies to show us. i think as an undergrad at cal, you probably ran bay to breakers quite a bit in your younger years, right? >> reporter: yeah. younger years, how dare you, mark! you're right, i did. we're at the people's exhibit toe at fort mason. 50,000 runners this year. weather's going to be great. mark's going to talk about that in a minute. we're looking at all the free stuff. i got gasia this cool head band. julie, i got you this. it's a massager thing.

now, looking out towards sutro tower, there's the fog bank that will expand in coverage for the overnight hours. it's going to be a factor both mornings, for saturday and sunday. then into next week, more clouds. more mid to upper level clouds paying us a visit. overnight lows, first thing tomorrow morning, starting out saturday in the 40s to 50s, with a big blanket of clouds that will be pushing back into the region overnight. also we already know about the wind speeds out there. here's the forecast for this weekend. this very weak system up here basically caps our temperatures. with that, we'll have readings mainly in the upper 50s to 60s. warmest locations, right around 70 degrees. here's our forecast model, showing you all the clouds saturday morning, 7:00. then skies becoming partly cloudy for the afternoon. that's a green contour essentially covering most of the bay area. so we'll have lots of 60s out there for afternoon highs for santa rosa, concord. warmest locations, a few sprinkles, a few 70s on the maps toward antioch and brentwood. san jose, 67. half moon bay, 59 degrees.

here is a look ahead at your five-day forecast. no major heat. no 90s, no 80s. warmest locations mainly in the lower 70s. lots of overcast for the morning. skies becoming partly cloudy. as we showed you, it will be cool for bay to breakers. some people really care about the forecast for all the serious runners. other people don't care what the weather's going to be like. they will be out there anyway. >> serious runners are amazing. >> very fast. >> thanks, mark. well, six canines and their human handlers graduatedded from training at the california highway patrol today in west sacramento. [ applause ] >> these teams spent 11 months together, training the dogs to do things such as take down bad guys and search for drugs. the human officers are also trained on how to use special commands. they learn what it's like to be bitten while wearing protective gear. and we'll be back with sports right after this break.

. mark's here now. warriors getting really close to tipoff time. >> yeah, just a few minutes from now. i don't know, just a feeling, but i truly think the warriors have hit their stride. they got their playoff groove going. they look a little more comfortable in the post season. of course it's a little strange when year after year the warriors are just happy to get there. this year, i think they had to adjust to being a favorite in the playoffs. in the last couple of games, they have turned up the volume. really more aggressive style of play, like steph curry. not only popping his shots, but in the last game, game 5, he came up with six steals, as well as hitting six threes. that more aggressive style has certainly suited everyone concerned with golden state just fine. >> being physical is a part of it. it's more how active we were on the defensive end, how alert we

were, and then that sparks your offense, getting more stops. >> they kind of came out well. we felt like we want to get back in it and make a game of it. their guards are physical. we matched that for the most part. >> he's feeling good about tonight's game. meantime, got to feel good about the giants chances, up 9- 2 with madison bumgarner pitching in the 7th inning in cincinnati. we had a little weirdness going on there. that is the fireworks smoke stack in cincinnati. it caught on fire. it was smoking. they got it under control, sent the fire crew up there in the middle of the game. and the giants put things away with the long ball for a change. brandon belt, how about it's about time! that's a three-run shot. that's belt's first homerun of the year. it came in the first. and the giants are leading 3-0.
