. a manhunt is under way after gunfire erupts outside an east bay shopping mall. >> they are among the first to see young gunshot victims up close. now, trauma surgeons are trying to put a stop to the cycle of gun violence plaguing some bay area neighborhoods. . good evening, everyone. i'm heather holmes. >> and i'm ken wayne. police in concord are looking for at least two armed men who opened fire in the parking lot of the sun valley mall this morning. ktvu's christien kafton joins us live from the scene of the

shooting. police are saying it's fortunate nobody was hit. >> reporter: yeah, it's very fortunate no one was hit. the incident happened around 10:50 this morning, so the parking lot was not as packed as it could be. this is the area we're talking about. imagine if the shooting were to take place now. very fortunate no one was injured or killed in this incident. tonight, police are looking for the shooters. 10:50 saturday morning, shoppers at sun valley mall in concord heard a series of gunshots. investigators aren't releasing a lot of details about the shooting, but do say there were at least two men firing back and forth at one another across this parking lot. the only casualties, three cars caught in the crossfire. edward ping came to the mall for shopping and lunch. >> i saw police along my car. what happened to my car? i came over to take a look. oh, it's surprising is. >> reporter: gunmen hit his toyota twice, leaving a hole in the door and one in the windshield. he says he's just happy he

wasn't in his car when the shooting started. >> lucky, you know. if i was in the parking lot, very dangerous. >> reporter: catharine guyman works in the mall. her white toyota was right next to ping, but somehow her car escaped without a scratch. >> that car, that car, my car, so far, so good. >> reporter: she said she missed breakfast this morning and had planned to catch a snack in her car, but fortunately, seshe is she was too busy. >> i asked the officer about it and he said it happened about 10:30. luckily we were busy inside my store and i didn't end up going on a break. he said, yeah, you would have been right in the middle of a gun fight. >> reporter: we've learned that some of the stores here in the mall and the mall itself have turned video over to investigators to help them find the shooters. police were here in the mall parking lot for hours taking photographs and gathering evidence. investigators say they are looking for a tan four-door car, with four men inside. >> christien kafton live in

concord, thank you. vallejo police say a 10- year-old girl is back home with her family tonight after she reported being kidnapped from her school yesterday. that girl told police she was taken after class from dan minnie school along lorenzo drive. she told investigators the man grabbed her by the arm, pulled her into a car and drove her to the north part of vallejo or american canyon. she was able to get away and walked to a friend's house. the girl described the kidnapper as a heavy-set african american man, about 6 feet tall with a gold nose ring. she also says he had a red and green dragon tattoo on his left arm and that he was wearing black and green eyeglasses. also in vallejo, police have arrested a second suspect in the shooting death of a high school student. 17-year-old max rusk was shot to death thursday afternoon while walking on a trail near jesse bethel high school. yesterday evening, police arrested a 16-year-old from sassoon city. his name will not be released because he is a juvenile.

his arrest comes just hours after police took 19-year-old zachary crowell of vallejo into custody. he allegedly knew the victim. police are asking the public for information as they continue to investigate this case. a bicyclist was killed in an early morning crash today in solano county while riding in a bike race known as the davis double century. the crash happened around 5:00 a.m. near interstate 80 at sparling lane and tremont road southwest of davis. the highway patrol says the bicyclist failed to stop at a stop sign and rode directly into the path of an oncoming big rig. the victim, a 50-year-old rockland resident, was pronounced dead at the scene. law enforcement across the bay area worked today to build trust between their departments and their communities. more than 20 alameda county agencies, plus the highway patrol, set up booths at mount eden high school in heyward. besides giving people a chance to meet officers in person and see equipment, the event featured discussion groups on how to improve policing and outreach to youth. the highway patrol is looking for a man who ran into

a cal trans street sweeping truck, then used a gun to car jack that driver. it happened just before 5:30 this morning on westbound interstate 580 in castro valley, near the redwood road exit. investigators say that a black bmw collided with the truck and that the driver then got out, showed a gun and drove away in that cal trans truck. the truck was later found in oakland. the suspect is still at large. he is described as being in his early twenties, having a thin build and long, dark wavy hair. a first of its kind conference in oakland today brought together doctors at ucsf children's hospital and young people with a goal of reducing gun violence. ktvu's cristina rendon is live in the newsroom with more on the first save life youth summit. >> reporter: heather, today's summit was meant to start a conversation with oakland's youth, to allow victims to share their experiences about the impacts of gun violence and to figure out ways to break the

cycle. everyone in this room has been impacted by gun violence in oakland. some are survivors. some are teens trying to avoid it. and some are the doctors who treat gunshot victims. >> inner cities have become battle fields. >> reporter: dr. michael bell spearheaded the first-ever save life youth summit at laney college, an idea sparked after seeing too many children come into the emergency room over the years at ucsf children's hospital oakland. >> often with the young kids, they are not the intended victim. but they are often the victim. >> reporter: it's why he wants to change the conversation with youth about gun violence and find ways to stop it. a group of boys from an at-risk youth camp were there. like quasi glenn, who says he is from a rough neighborhood. >> it was pretty violent, but i tried my best to stay away from it. i'm still living now. >> reporter: the youth camp's director says the reality of gun violence is a step in the right direction. >> i believe it needs to come from them, from the actual

people in the streets with the guns. >> reporter: the effects from street violence spills into emergency rooms and bell says at the end of the day, doctors are human, too. >> when you go home, you think about how unnecessary this really is. i mean, why would a 2-year-old be shot? you know, that really, really messes with your mind. >> there's things that you never forget and there are sights that you see as a doctor and a surgeon that stay with you your whole life. >> reporter: although they have gotten very good at saving lives, they would have rather not be in business. >> i don't want to see any more kids shot. >> reporter: bell says it took a community effort to put this event on. it wasn't just children's hospital. it was highland hospital, the city of oakland, peralta community college district and the alameda county healthcare services agency. he is already looking forward to having a bigger summit next year. heather? >> but hearing from those surgeons, really a unique and very powerful perspective. thank you. about 50,000 people are expected to take part in

tomorrow's big bay to breakers race. san francisco police say security will be a top priority tomorrow. backpacks are banned from the course unless they are see- through. floats are also not allowed. and there is a zero tolerance policy for alcohol. the race begins at 8:00 tomorrow morning. the route starts at maine and howard streets and ends at the great highway in lincoln. parts of the embarcadero and ocean beach will be closed starting tonight. golden gate park access will also be limited. find out more details about tomorrow's race by going to our website or by downloading our free news app, ktvu.com. well, traffic is back to normal along highway 4 near pittsburg after a big rig crash spilled coal all over the roadway. it happened at about 4:00 this morning in the eastbound direction near the begly road off ramp. the big rig was carrying nearly 80,000 pounds of coal. four of the highway's five

lanes were closed, causing a huge traffic backup. all lanes were back open by midmorning. we learned more today about a possible break in the investigation into that deadly amtrak train derailment in philadelphia earlier this week. as ryan yennis tells us, photographs show the train may have been hit by a projectile before the crash. >> reporter: the fbi is now analyzing the lower left side of amtrak 188's detroit front windshield. it's there that investigators have found a circular break in the window that could be the result of a flying object thrown or shot at the train moments before it crashed on tuesday night at about 9:21 p.m. ntsb investigators say an assistant conductor on board the train recalls hearing a radio conversation moments before the crash between the engineer and a nearby engineer of a local septa train, acknowledging they were both hit by an object. >> she said she heard the engineer talking to a septa

engineer. she recalled that the septa engineer had reported to the train dispatcher that he had either been hit by a rock or shot at. >> reporter: if true, it would mean three trains were hit by an object in the area of the crash within a 20-minute span. the front windshield of that septa 729 local train was hit around 9:10, forcing the train into an emergency stop. just minutes after that, passenger madison calver witnessed a projectile hit a southbound oh sell la 213. >> i was working on my laptop, following up a couple e-mails and all of a sudden heard a loud crash. i quickly turned, didn't see what hit us, but saw to my left everything had been destroyed. enough so that the damage was -- [ indiscernible ] >> reporter: the new revelation expands the investigation. could an object have somehow affected the engineer brandon bostian moments before the crash? the ntsb says bostian was extremely cooperative in his

11 people hurt. officials say that the bus was carrying 46 passengers. it went down into a ravine more than 30 yards deep in north central china. bus accidents are common on china's treacherous mountain roads, where drivers often ignore safety rules by carrying too many passengers. u.s. special forces have killed a senior isis leader. a man identified as abu sayif was said to be in charge of the group's illegal oil and gas operations. today, the white house praised the mission that killed sayif and captured his wife, saying the united states is grateful for the men who carried out the complex mission. the united states will continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with our iraqi partners in an effort to ultimately destroy isil. a former national security advisor says the raid itself is a statement. >> the u.s. for the first time going in on the ground, killing a high-valued leader, the rest of the leadership now has even got to be more wary than they

were before. >> no u.s. forces were hurt. it's not clear yet where sayif's wife will be detained, but we now know a woman considered a slave to him will be reunited with her family. meanwhile, isis has been gaining ground in iraq, taking control of the city of ramadi yesterday. the plight of human trafficking victims is now the basis for a new opera. ♪ >> it tells the true stories of four women whose lives have been affected by human trafficking between the u.s. and mexico. two of the women are victims. one is a victim-turned- trafficker, and the fourth is a police officer. the story is based on a sex trafficking scandal uncovered more than a dozen years ago in the strawberry fields in san diego. but those involved in this project say the opera speaks to a much larger problem. >> human trafficking is not

warmest locations barely in the lower 70s for santa rosa, fairfield, antioch. pacifica, 57. right now, watching some severe weather popping up across parts of texas and oklahoma. you can see the past few frames with the radar and also the tornado reports popping up for this part of the country, so we'll keep an eye on this for tonight, as we have more active weather for that part of the country. back here in the bay area, we just have this. in fact, we have showers that have been approaching parts of lake county very close to a clear lake. right now, this one cell dying out just to the north and to the east of clear lake. right now, we have low clouds, as we showed you, developing near parts of the coastline, pushed back into the bay. current numbers, as you can see santa rosa at 70 degrees. san francisco, not reporting on this panel, but right now in the mid-50s. oakland, 59. san jose at last check, 63. as far as the wind speed, you can see nothing extremely strong, but still a bit of a breeze out toward fairfield and oakland, shall miles an hour. sfo, winds sustained at 18, gusting to 28 miles per hour.

here's our live camera looking out toward sutro tower. you can see the tower right there kind of being masked by the low clouds and fog. here is the forecast, forecast headlines for tonight. partly cloudy and breezy. sunday we'll add high clouds to the mix. then the extended forecast, mostly cloudy skies and possibly a few pop-up showers approaching parts of the bay area. bay to breakers for sunday, lots of clouds out there and temperatures will be in the low to mid-50s to start things off. then at ocean beach, we are expecting partly cloudy skies. eventually readings in the upper 50s. bit of a breeze right now in the short-term, winds around 10 to 20 miles an hour. here's the bigger perspective. this area of low pressure is going to set up camp over the next few days. not only for tomorrow, but into next week, so the cool to mild weather pattern will stick around. a mix of sun and clouds. then possibly by wednesday and thursday, there's a slight chance of a few showers, especially up in the north bay. more high clouds rotating through the area throughout the day on sunday.

after arriving in oakland in the wee hours this morning. the basketball world still buzzing about the shot steph curry made in memphis. final seconds of the third quarter, iguodala forces a turnover. curry lets it fly from three quarters court and he's all net. that gave the warriors an eight- point lead heading into the fourth. curry looking every bit the mvp. he took 13 three-point attempts and made eight of them. curry had 32 in all. warriors concluded the series by winning three straight and has to serve them in the playoff experience department moving forward. >> they hit us in the mouth two games in a row and it was, it was frustrating to just try to figure it out. we, we were just mentally focused and tough and understood what it took to win against this team, win three straight. that's huge, and, you know, we're sitting here in the conference finals, looking forward to the next test. we are talking about a race horse that has a chance to be the first triple crown winner since affirmed in 1978.

kentucky derby winner american pharoah in the middle of a dell luge at the second leg of the crowd. the preakness was run today. american pharoah had the dreaded number 1 post spot, but that didn't bother him, as he won the race wire to wire with vehicle tore espinoza on bored. 13 horses since 1978 have won the first two legs of the crown and failed to win the third and final race. the belmont stakes is three weeks from today. on monday, barry bonds joined dusty baker, johnny mosley, roger maltby and the late frank muley in this year's sports hall of fame class. i sat down with bonds that night and we talked about among other things, two people who influenced his early love for baseball. his dad bobby and his godfather, willie mays. >> it was important for me to do it here. this is where i was from. this is where i loved. this is the community that embraced my family. everything i ever wanted for was to be here and willie has always been my milestone. he was the hardest thing that
