moment. and i'm glad that you remembered because we will give you an update on that coming up. we will start off with a look at the east shear freeway and westbound 80 as i cycle my map to the right screen. you can see traffic will be slow but only a little bit. most of it is a nice drive and taking about 20 minutes. i will take that. let's go to the bay bridge toll plaza. you can see traffic here is going to be backed up as you come up to the pay gates there. no major problems there. steve mentioned a crash on highway 152. that was a pickup truck that crashed into a pole. it was on fire. fortunately the person inside the truck got out but traffic is still very heavy. they have removed that truck from the lanes but you still have a big backup past the seen. and this is a look at westbound

580. we have slow traffic on the altamont pass. let's go back to the desk. police have now called off the search for a driver suspected of stealing a car in contra costa county and crashing it in berkeley early this morning. the chp says that stolen car was going the rang way on several bay area freeways about 11:30 last night. look at this wreckage. during the chase the chp says the man called 911. told authorities stop following me. the driver crashed on herself street between sacramento scene california streets. and that caused another car to flip over. the driver of the stolen car ran away. the driver of the other car did suffer minor injuries. ktvu tara moriarty is out there she will bring you a live update coming up at 6:30. police in campbell they are still on the lookout for a child predator who tried to kidnap a young girl over the weekend. janine de la vega is joining us

live from campbell and you have new photos of the suspects car that the police released. >> reporter: yeah and police are concerned because this happened in a neighborhood where there are two schools. the middle school and high school and also near a park. it happened during the daytime. saturday morning at 10:00 a.m.. here is a sketch of the suspect. he is being described as asian or latino in his mid 30s. investigators are sharing two new surveillance photos that confirm the man had been stocking a fifth grade girl in his silver or tan older model sedan. she was walking her dog when the man asked for directions. he then got out of his car, grabbed her and pushed her to the ground. she screamed and then he drove away. >> the belief is he was trying to do harm to her. what would have happened is unknown and we're really thankful she fought back and

screamed. >> besides the still photographs, police have released a surveillance video showing the suspects car driving by. the neighborhood is near fisher park but detectives received a -- they want everyone to be on the lookout for the suspect that was at the time wearing a block and white beanie. you will hear from people here in the community obviously they have very worried because they want this suspect caught. >> all right janine de la vega, thank you. nine people are dead. 18 others hurt during a shootout yesterday around. investigators say the gangs met at a restaurant in waco to settle disputes about turf and recruiting when a fistfight

broke out. thatescalateed to a knife fight. police were aware of that meeting and moved in. one woman says she crawled back to the freezer where some of the waitresses were hiding. >> really, really scary. we didn't know if somebody was going to come back. they said people outside the doors had guns. >> the only people killed or hurt were members of gangs. one police officer did have to be taken to the hospital for a heat replaited problem. president obama is banning the federal government from providing military style equipment for local police departments. in a new report out today a task force says there is a risk of police misusing or over using the military equipment which could under mine community trust. later today president obama is traveling to camden, new jersey where he will meet with young

people and law enforcement to talk about ways to increase trust between police and the community. the air force investigating a deadly crash of a military aircraft in hawaii it killed a u.s. marine. 22 people were on that aircraft. it crashed during a training exercise. now everyone on board was hurt. the survivors their injuries range from critical to minor. witness say they saw a dust cloud and then flames were shooting into the air. >> the flames were coming up at least 20 feet high and a lot of people are rushing in to help as much as possible. there was some medically trained people trying to scale over the barbed wire. >> that aircraft was based at camp pend lton and so far the military is not releasing any other information about the crash victims. there is a go fund me page

to help the families of one of the u.s. marines killed in that crash. sergeant eric seaman was one of six marines killed in that crash. so far almost $18,000 has been raised on that go fund me page for his family. fire crews spent the night watching for any flairups. alex savidge is joining us now from san jose with what it took to control this fire. >> reporter: you can see where this was burning right behind the homes. and there is the charred blackened hillside where this fire burned about five acres of dry rush. it started at 9:30 last night.

it came dangerously close to homes here. it also was burning at oak hill funeral home and memorial park which is on the other side of this hill but in the end there was no homes or businesses burned here and no one was hurt. and this morning investigators are trying to figure out what started another brush fire. it started around 2:30 in the afternoon yesterday along 580. firefighters from several different agencies were called out there to put out the flames. in the end about 75 acres burned there along the hillsides and smoke from that fire was also impacting traffic on the freeway as well. back here in san jose this morning, again this is the scene here a charred hillside after a small grass fire broke out close to the mobile home park but firefighters they moved in on the fire quickly. they were able to get it under

control before it could do any damage. >> boy i will say. thank you alex. 6:09 is the time. tighter restrictions on the sale of tobacco products. yagers says he's concerned that e-cigarette devices are being marketed to young people and they have unknown health consequences. several u.s. cities including new york have raised the minimum age to buy tobacco products to 21 largely because of concern over the growing popularity of the e-cigarettes among high school students. the city of berkeley is set to reveal how much money is being collected through the new soda tax. last november residents voted in a $0.01 per ounce tax.

this is big. amtrak trains are rolling again between new york city and philadelphia the first time since last weeks deadly crash. the new promise coming from amtrak this morning. >> but first buckle up or pay a fine. more ton the crack down efforts that gets under way today. >> good morning. we are looking at the north bay commute and so far so good as you drive over to marin county. the traffic is looking good approaching the richmond san rafael bridge.

good morning to you. the suspected drunk driver who's car hit and killed a mother and one-year-old daughter in livermore he could be charged today. on saturday the family and friends of the victims marched in downtown livermore. they were demanding justice. morales and her daughter they were killed two weeks ago outside of a family gatt gathering. police say the 35-year-old brian jones was driving drunk when he lost control of his car and crashed into him. jones south on bail now. the district attorney says he could face charges of vehicular manslaughter or possibly second

degree murder. the chp will be out in force cracking down on drivers that will not be wearing seat belts. the chp is teaming up with law enforcement agencies for click it or ticket campaign. the chp says not only do seat belts save lives but not wearing one could cost you a lot of money. tickets range from $161-$490. since the click it or ticket campaign began in california in 2005, it's estimated that more than 1.5 million have begun buckling up. there is a report of problems on the tesla car.

we will be picking a name on wednesday and announcing it at 7:00 on wednesday. i can hear myself that is weird. let's go outside and take a look at what we have. we don't see the spiders. probably still in bed. traffic is backed up to the foot of the mccarthur maze. metering lights are on. this is a 15-20 minute delay. westbound 24 looks good through lafayette and orinda. this whole drive is taking 50 minutes. i will show you where it's really slow. but also on 680 as you drive away from pleasanton and head down toward the sunol grade you will see a lot of slow traffic there. let's go to steve in the weather center. >> all right sal we do have another cool monday and another cool week on tap. temperatures remaining well below normal coast, bay and inland. these are the normal highs.

today 59, 63, 68, and 66 way below normal. this is from glen. he says a cool start at 52 over cast inland on the east side of mt. diablo. going north expect cool temps. i would agree with that. it will remain on the cool side. a lot of cloud cover and pretty cool thunderstorms. i would not be surprised if something similar happens today. a lot of mostly cloud eyes here. 40s and 50s on your temps. it's mainly an on shore breeze. 50s on the temps. they have come up a little bit. we will keep an eye on that. the cool temps have played into our cool may pattern. stronger system due on wednesday, thursday and that almost keep scattered showers

welcome back. we have taken a look at a rescue. mt. diablo for the second time in a week. yesterday the chp rescued a 72-

year-old woman who fell off her horse near the castle rock area. the woman received only high nor injuries but because of the remoteness of the area they had to launch a helicopter and a week ago a 74-year-old woman had to be rescued after falling during a hike. investigators trying to find the cause of a pair rap colliding accident. witnesses say the man hit the cliff and died before rescuers could get to him. officials are not releasing the name of the man, where he lived or how much experience he had in paragliding. >> with any aviation you're taking risk. and you have to think very carefully about how to minimize that risk. >> it's safe but the board is as safe as you make it. >> there was another accident at muscle beach involving a paraglider two years ago. a gilroy high school

student killed in a drunk driving crash will be remembered by friends and family. sarah williams was one of three students killed when the car she was riding in crashed. the vigil for williams will be held at 8:30 tonight. southern california congresswoman loretta sanchez apologizing for mocking native americans far gesture that was caught on video. >> i'm going to his office thinking i'm going to go meet with -- >> this happened while she was speaking saturday to a group of delegates at the state democratic convention in anaheim. sanchez described her confusion about being asked to meet with the indian-american caucus. she was explaning how she thought it was from the native

american community. congresswoman sanchez apologized yesterday saying quote we all make mistakes. switching gears now. slovakian cyclist peter won. the decisions were made after all of these cyclists arrived. he started the day two seconds behind the over all leader. he squeaked into third place at the end of the final stage. it was his first tour of california victory. california is the eighth most bike friendly state in america. according to a new report by the league of american

so i would not be surprised if this comes in well below normals. a lot of low clouds around. a couple another low drops in. you can see the moisture wrapping back around from southern california to nevada into the sierra and northern california. over all partly sunny and mostly cloudy and cool. you can see the low dropping at 40s and 50s. west at 20. there is an on shore breeze and some of the cloud cover has been clipping the northern part. mostly cloudy. a little breezy at times. there could be a few showers here. temperatures well below normal. sal 6:30. anything new? >> we do have slow traffic. good morning to you. we will start off in the east shore freeway on the east shore freeway westbound interstate 80

we will see slow traffic coming up to the mccarthur maze. it's a 23 minute dry. not too bad. it's getting busier and busier. when you get to the bay bridge toll plaza. it's a 15-20 minute delay there and traffic continues to be a little slow on the bridge. it is not terrible but it is slow. we can go to the maps. it's also slow on 238. you wonder why it will take so long to drive that. it's off to the side. it's already created a little slow traffic from that area. let's go back to the desk. a driver suspected of stealing a car led police on a chase into berkeley. that is where tara moriarty is this morning where the car crashed and it cleaned up. you're finding out about a phone call the driver made

during the chase. >> reporter: yes. it was pretty bizarre. he called 911 during the chase to let officers know he wanted them to call off the chase. obviously they did not do that and that is part of the reason because the driver was going the wrong way on freeways and city streets. we are here at hurst and california. the suv slipped. the victim taken to the hospital with minor injuries. the suspect took off. the chp says that the suspect stole the car in martinez and then he led officers on a chase from concord to berkeley. >> they immediately discontinued the pursuit because he was going the wrong way. he was traveling westbound on the eastbound lanes. he was using the slow lane and the right shoulder. drove all the way through highway 4 on to highway 80.

interstate 80 and came in through the oakland area. again driving westbound on the eastbound lanes. >> the chase started around 11:20 last night. the chp followed the chp through the helicopter. for nearly four hours chp and berkeley police combed the area within a one block radius. the suspect is described as a white man with short hair, a medium build between 20-25 years old. we'll let you know if we receive any updates from authorities. live from berkeley i'm tara moriarty back to you. over the weekend amtrak was ordered to expand the use of a speed control system near that

crash site. federal investigators say the train was speeding at 106 miles an hour as it headed into a curb and then derailed last tuesday. eight people were killed. more than 200 were hurt. authorities are also trying to figure out if an object was thrown through the air that left a hole in the engines windshield if it had anything to do with that derailment. reportedly it's not uncommon for trains in that particular area to be hit by rocks, bottles, bricks, thrown by people along the tracks. >> that is exactly what we want to determine. we are looking for everything at this point. 55-year-old aved gilani was

laid top rest in hayward. he was a married father of two. he worked at wells fargo as an executive in their new york commercial real estate office. a month ago kumar polk was an active seven-year-old that loved to play basketball, baseball, and football. on april 22nd he was with a crowd to mourn a neighbor who died in his sleep when someone driving by fired multiple bullets and hit kumar twice. his family is holding out hope that he will be able to walk again. >> when he first came out, we were telling him he was crying and screaming like why me? i'm a six-year-old. i'm not supposed to get shot. >> kumar turned eight years old on friday.

one thing that keeps the spirit up is watching the warriors and his favorite player steph curry. the family has set up a go fund me account. investigators looking for the cause of a grass fire that burned for nearly three hours near the altamont pass. that started at the center divide near bear state 580. 50 forecasts from several are you can see there over the 75 acres of dry grass it burned pretty quickly. smoke from the fire slowed traffic on the freeway. a twitter user posted photos showing just how much smoke was in the area. officials say some drivers stopped focusing on the road and watched the fire crews which caused the minor accidents. no one was seriously hurt.

now to the nba playoffs. the warriors they are in the western conference finals for the first time in almost 408 years. they will play the houston rockets who came back from a 3- 1 deficit with the clippers. turning now to steph curry. i'm sure you would agree everybody has play off fever now. >> reporter: moving on to the western conference finals. if it is the houston rockets and everyone is talking about this play off series coming up. we go to video now. a lot of the fans were hoping for a warriors clippers

p.m.. game two thursday also in oakland at oracle 6:00 p.m.. games three and four are in houston. we're also talking about football. the nfl owners are holding their annual spring meeting in san francisco this week. among the many topics they will discuss is an nfl franchise. they will hear from the st. louis rams owner about a stadium in engelwood. no votes will be cast about relocation but the brief comments are to judge what is happening in some of the markets especially oakland. other topics include deflategate. and speaking of oakland the new report says it is not likely the raiders will get a new stadium. the main one is the cost which is estimated to be about $1 billion. they also want the old stadium torn down before new

construction begins on a new one. also happening today first lady michelle obama will present a special award to san jose's tech museum. the museum will be honored with the national medal for museum and library service. tim richy invited an elementary school principal to accompany him to the white house. he says the award is given on the basis of community impact and that the relationship the museum has is an important part of its mission. >> bravo. time is 6:41. also coming from the white house the surprise announcement from the president this morning. what he is doing about the militarization of police departments all across the country. >> we are live in campbell where an attempted child kidnapping has the community on edge. we'll share what clues police have developed over the

extreme athlete dean potter was killed over the weekend. he was one of two men who died attempting a base jump in a wing suit in yosemite. potter made films about his feats including ones that was called when dogs fly. >> the joy we have is just off the charts. we love it up there. >> spokesperson for the park says the 43-year-old potter and climbing partner 29-year-old graham hunt jumped from a 75- foot rocky cliff on saturday. someone called for help after losing contact with them. their bodies were found yesterday morning. officials say no, ma'am pair shoots had -- no parachutes had been deployed.

a scary story a south bay police are asking for help to find a man who tried to kidnap a 12-year-old girl last weekend. janine de la vega is in campbell this morning where this attempted kidnapping happened police are praising the young girl that was targeted. >> she is just ten years old and she was incredibly poised when she sat down with them and described what her attacker looked like. she was not injured in her attack but she is shaken up over what happened. let's go to a picture of this sketch that police made up. this suspect is described as being asian or latino in his mid 30s. he followed the ten-year-old girl who was walking her dog into the cul-de-sac. the two new surveillance footage shows his car. he asked the girl for directions and then he got out

and grabbed her and pushed her to the ground. >> the location the neighborhood the time of day and what led up to it is really concerning that somebody would take that risk to do something like this. >> that is very scary. like i have a daughter myself. so i do feel like campbell is a safe place to live. so to hear about this does make me uneasy. >> reporter: the girl ended up screaming and the suspect ended up driving away. a neighbor and the girl's father cameroning to her-- father came running to her aid. detectives say it proves the man was stalking the girl and waiting for her to approach. police are following all leads and taking reported sightings seriously. the neighborhood where this happened it is close to a middle school and a high school and a park. so again a reminder to parents to talk to their kids about the

hayward. we have a crash blocking almost the entire freeway. not quite. southbound 880 our sky fox is over head. looking at the the progress they are finally making some. now a couple of lanes are getting by. but they are still cloning up this crash. involving a motorcycle and another one. the problem is that southbound 880 is a big mess because of it and it's beginning to effect 238. you can see from sky fox that this backup is really severe. our best recommendation for you is to figure out a way not to use 238. look at this backup. this is terrible and this is much worse than it normally is. you want to avoid this. perhaps you will use the side roads to avoid 880.

all right let's move along to the bay bridge toll plaza here. westbound. it is backed up for a 15-20 minute delay. a lot of cloud cover over us. there will be no change. the possibility of more thundershowers. things really it will up over lake county yesterday afternoon. a lot of reports of thunder and lightning. we're way below my forecasted highs. 59, 63, 68 and only 66 for downtown san jose. cloud cover continues to stream around. we're wrapping back around from the sierra and picking up a little lift in energy as we head up toward mendocino county and lake county.

oh there goes the windshield. >> oh yes indeed. storm chasers in their struck smashed by strong hail in oklahoma. they were following tornadoes that touched down in the south western part of that state

yesterday. damaging homes and businesses. people had to be rescued there. in texas rising rivers forced rescues and evacuations. there may be even more wild weather today. storms are expected in minnesota, wisconsin, and illinois. this morning concerns are growing over a deadly bird flu outbreak in the united states. one of the nation's largest egg producers in minnesota has announced it has to kill two million egg laying hens because of the virus. it's just the latest farm to be effected. 35million birds had to be destroyed. it is the the largest bird flu outbreak in the u.s. history. medical experts say the virus poses little risk to humans. >> we eat poultry products and egg products and not have to worry about that. the biggest concern is more for the producer. >> one day your flock is good and getting eggs and then the next day they come out and say you have been infected.

>> grocery stores are raising prices on eggs because of the dwindling supply. in the meantime researchers are working on a vaccine that they hope will stop the virus from spreading. also today state lawmakers are to vote on a ban on tiny plastic beads in toothpaste and face scrubs. they are too tiny to be captured by the filters at waste water treatment plants and turning um in a large amount of oceans rivers e and bays. if approved california would approve the microbeads. imagine rowing a boat 6,000 miles. a woman from washington state plans to do that. she will set out today going from japan to san francisco. we're talking about 30-year-old sonya. she backed her boat with 13s
