trying to clear a rocky outcrapping but slammed -- outcropping but slammed into. his dog was not with him. how should police respond to calls involving people with mental illness and are they required to treat the mentally ill differently when under arrest? these are some questions that came between the u.s. supreme court. ktvu's allie rasmus is live in the news room to explain. >> reporter: the supreme court didn't answer either question in the 6-2 decision today. the only answer they gave was the two san francisco police officers involved in the shooting cannot be sued for what happened. >> reporter: august 7, 2008, social workers called police to the group home, concerned the woman stopped taking her medication and locked herself in her room. two san francisco police officers tried twice to enter. on the second try they broke down the door and they

threatened her with a knife. police shot her. she survived and sued the city and the officers. >> resulted in her being injured. >> he argued her rights were violated. they require government to make reasonable accommodation for people with disabilities. that includes people with mental illness. >> they have been trained, slow the situation down, bring in support people. >> the danger was great and they had little time to act. >> the supreme court let the question of what the officers should have done unanswered. they said the officers could not be sued in this case. >> we are disappointed they did not answer that question but gratified they ruled in favor of the officers. >> reporter: the lack of a answer from the court means the

lawsuit will go to a lower court where she can go ahead with her lawsuit against the city of san francisco. we caught up with a photographer who is on the mission to preserve the memories of world war world war ii -- world war ii veterans. he learned the story of battle field survival. he joined forces with the senior living center to create the american's heroes project. highlighting the veteran whose live at the centers across the nation. he says they could bring the world war ii vets together with their communities and their families. >> sometimes their kids never heard these stories. so it creates a greater appreciation for the veterans. >> this is the 70th anniversary of the end of world war ii. they spark conversation.
