we're live in san jose, where a huge fire has created an environmental mess. we'll tell you about the hazardous chemicals and water, contaminated water out here and what's being done about it. baggage handlers, busted. a major marijuana distribution operation involving the oakland airport. what prosecutors say some airline employees did to move drugs. and the warriors, they are getting ready for a huge playoff series. the western conference finals kickoff. the rockets coming into the building. we'll tell you about the mindset the players have for this matchup -- coming up.

and hopefully they shoot better than that! 7:00. we're live in san jose in front of a building where there was a huge fire early this morning. while the flames are out, firefighters are concerned the danger is not yet over. ktvu fox 2's janine de la vega has been out there since 4:00 this morning and coming up in minutes she will tell us why everyone is still being told to stay back. >> those puddles. >> yes. >> good morning. welcome, once again, to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. >> i'm dave clark. let's check your weather and traffic. steve paulson, gray and chilly. >> if you love this, there are a few breaks in the clouds, it won't be very warm. good, 10, 15 degrees from where they should be. too much in the way of low clouds. a pretty picture. some low clouds will give way

to more sun. but struggling to warmup. in fact, from michael, santa cruz mountains, he says a cool and damp spring morning with fog working its way up to 2,000 feet. 46 calm degrees. look at the low clouds making a trek through the delta as well. thunderstorms coming down from the north-northeast. some of these may play into the weather for mendocino county, lake county later on. it looks like a lot of those will be up to the sierra and the mother lode. 50s on the tempts. there is a decent breeze behind some of these. but vallejo, william tweety, another gray day in vallejo. 54 low, low clouds, light wind. 30 inches of mercury. never made it past 60. westerly at 17. west oakland, south wind. it's all onshore. the low clouds when they burn off, temperatures struggle to get out of the upper 60s or 70s. on the coast, it's a lot of 50. it's a very cool pattern for us. 60s for many. upper 50s, low 60s.

below normal temps for everybody. what do you have for us, sal? slow traffic out there, steve, and crowded conditions on many of the bay area freeways. let's start off with 880 northbound. you can see traffic is moving well. it's not stop and go past the coliseum. heading south to hayward. you will see stop and go after 2348 as you head down to fremont which is not unusual. when you get to the bay bridge toll plaza, you will see the traffic is going to be busy this morning at the toll plaza, about a 20-minute delay. i want to mention contra costa county has slow traffic on 680 now. just after 242. you will notice brake lights continuing into walnut creek which is very typical. no problems on 680 after that to alamo and san ramon. as you drive to the south bay, we've had slow traffic here and there on 101, 280, 85. but still on the light side compared to what we normally get here in the santa clara valley. 7:03. back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. firefighters in san jose are dealing with a hazardous

chemical situation after a fire burned through a building in a commercial area. it started around 12:30 on reynolds circle near zanker road. janine de la vega joins us live from snra to tell us what is going on there -- san jose to tell us what's going on there. >> reporter: well, there are two pools of contam named water -- contaminated water beyond this caution tape. this is an industrial area in north san jose. we're being kept back and so are the people who work in the businesses because it's not safe to get closer to t take a look at this photo showing the flames that went through the roof of this metal finishing business. someone walking by reported it at 12:30 and warned two workers still instiped at the time. the smoke and flames were heavy. this grew to a four-alarm fire. firefighters stayed on the outside. there was a placard posted warring of sulfuric acid. they quickly grew concerned about the water runoff.

>> we tested the water and found it to be highly corrosive, very strong base, the kind of stuff that can eat through your clothing, through rubber and so we immediately established it's more of a hazardous materials incident. >> reporter: about 100 firefighters and personnel responded to the fire. we were told at least 45 of them had to be deacon decontaminated. firefighters have locked off reynolds circle. they've gone around notifying the owners they can't be here. part of robertson lane is blocked off. they need to keep the road open for firefighters. no cause determined for the fire. investigators can't go in until they get this cleaned up. back out here live, there's smoke rising from the building and in the last couple of minutes, we just started smelling it. it smelled pretty awful because of the combination. i'm not sure if we'll have to

move. it doesn't smell good out here. we're being kept but it seems like the wind has shifted. now we're starting to get a whiff of it. tori? >> all right, thank you. keep us updated on the latest flare up. police in oakland are investigating a deadly crash involving a car and a big rig. you can see the big rig right there in the middle of your screen. it happened at fifth and broadway. you can see right basically under interstate 880. the driver of the car was killed in the crash. you can see the car just on the right there almost wedged under the big rig. police are still on the scene and there are road closures as a result. 7:06. we have more background information now about that palo alto man accused of stealing a plane and then disappearing. the palo alto weekly reports 24- year-old william james mcadams was arrest in florida two weeks before he vanished. he was booked on a charge of

battery because of a domestic incident. police say mcadams who is a flight instructor took a plane from the palo alto airport on may the 8th. a radar signal from the plane was picked up near watsonville that same day. but neither mcadams nor that plane have been seen since then. a 90-pound mountain lion in san mateo was tranquilized and captured after roaming around through a neighborhood yesterday. the mountain lion was found in a tree near palm avenue and 9th street. that's an area a block away from busy el camino real. it's filled with homes and ates -- and apartments. it took two attempts with the tranquilizer gun to capture it. the first come came in at 4:00 a.m -- call came in at 4:00 a.m. at 4:00 p.m., the neighborhood was still on alert. >> came guy, saw this. couldn't get in my street. >> i'm hoping for the best

outcome for the mountain lion. definitely. i would not want to see them shoot it or anything like that. >> the animal experts say -- they say this mountain lion is a juvenile, a baby, out on its own for a year, and 40 pounds away from being full grown. the state department of fish and wildlife plans to release it back into the wild. 7:08. for the first time since 1976, the golden state warriors are heading into the western conference finals. the warriors will host the rockets at oracle arena in oakland for game 1. that's where alex savidge is live right now and -- how is team feeling as they get into the playoffs. you are not trying to deflate that ball. don't want a deflategate on our hands [laughter] >> reporter: no. just getting the ball ready for the game tonight. this ball is ready to go. i think we're all good.

tori, how are the warriors feeling come into the series? confident. but not too confident and that's the concern for the team. they beat the rockets four times during the regular season. all four times they met. but the warriors, all of the warriors said it during practice. they want to make sure they don't get too confident here with the rockets coming to town tonight. as you can tell, i'm at the end of the bench, a very appropriate place for me. if you have seen any of my shooting this morning -- oh! >> way to go. >> reporter: i'm gonna get it right back on track, you guys. i'm gonna get it back on track. hopefully, the warriors will be knocking down 3s tonight. steph and klay, they've been shooting the lights out. that's what got them back in the memphis series. let me show you the scene here inside oracle where everything is say to go. we have a beautiful shot here set up. you can see the stands, they all have the shirts. >> great shot.

>> reporter: strength in numbers. this place will be packed tonight. it will be an absolute madhouse. 19,000 on hand for game 1 of the western conference finals. this is the first time the warriors have been here in almost four derk aids -- decades. the last time was 1976. this is the first time they've done it in my lifetime, i know a lot of people's lifetime. it's a big deal. now, the rockets for their part, they are coming in playing really well. they came back against the l.a. clippers. they were down 3-1. but they came out on top so they are playing well. , the mvp runnerup james harden, he's coming to town along with dwight howard a force to be reckoned with. we talk about the regular season. the warriors won all of those meetings but they know that the playoffs is a whole different story. >> there will be no lackadaisical effort and no

casualness about our effort going through this series because we want something special to happen for us and we can hopefully control that by how we play. >> reporter: here is the shot. we've seen it. but this is the one that propelled the warriors past the grizzlies in that last series. it was the end of the third quarter, the time was winding down and steph curry beats the buzzer with a three-quarter court shot, just an unreal shot from him. they said -- i believe it was 62 feet is how far that was. he made it. nothing but net. from there on, they took control of that game and obviously moved ahead here to the western conference finals. so as we bring you back out here line, about 62 feet or so, dave, tori. what do you think? what are the odds. about the same spot as steph. >> piece of cake. >> well, i'm thinking -- yeah, 10-1 maybe you will make it. going up for it.

keep working on the shots. i think we need to have brian flores and alex savidge have a faceoff. >> thank you. 7:13. some bay area airport workers, arrested facing serious criminal charges. tara moriarty looking into how prosecutors say some oakland airport employees were smuggling drugs. but next the president has banned police departments from using certain kinds of military equipment. we'll explain how this is gonna affect local police. we're looking at a bridge commute now. look at the san mateo bridge. it's a little bit slow now heading out to the peninsula. we'll take a look at the commute leading up to the spot coming up. at 7:00 a.m., all of the reporting stations in the bay area, say cloudy. not only here but also ukiah

president obama's newly announced pan on providing -- ban on providing certain military equipment to local police departments doesn't look like it will have a significant impact on any bay area law enforcement agencies. for example, this armored truck that south san francisco police got is not on the list of banned equipment. the department says with the kind of high-powered assault weapons on the streets having an armored vehicle is essential. >> in today's society the amount of weapons that we were faced with on a daily basis, it's extremely important that bekeep our officers as well as the citizens as safe as possible in order to do that, we do need a vehicle such as this that provides safety for

everyone. >> looking at the list of banned items, it a pierce the only prohibited equipment used by bay area police are the grenade launchers that some departments use to fire tear gas. if you happen to be at sfo in terminal 2 this summer and in the fall, watch out for monsters. yep. a new exhibit displays classic horror movie memorabilia. it includes movie props, toys and original artwork from movies like the mummy, frankenstein and dracula. this was put together by the lead guitarist for metallica. you can also get a look at some of his custom made monster guitars. that exhibit will be at terminal 2 through early december. 7:17. and speaking of horrors, we have this giant spider that sometimes is on our bay bridge

this is highway 4 westbound coming up to the willow pass grade. you can see some slow traffic here. it's also slow in antioch which is kind of a typical commute. we're not seeing anything out of the ordinary. 680 is slow from 242 as you drive down to highway 24. we're looking at a commute at the toll plaza westbound where traffic is gonna be a little bit slow. there was a stalled vehicle. it looks like the metering lights have been slowed down. this was a 25 30-minute delay. you are looking at san jose, 85 northbound out of the almaden valley is slowing down now. you can see slow traffic here on 280 and on 101. now in mountain view, it still doesn't look all that bad. but it will probably get worse as the morning wears on. 7:19. let's go to steve in the weather center. usually at this time, the spider tweets something out. >> we'll see. >> maybe it will say by the way, my name is fred or

something. we'll see. speaking of tweets, most of them are coming in, it's cold, cloudy, drizzle. even up to lake county. overcast. ukiah says cloudy, fairfield cloudy. look hat the gray. some of that is downright cold. i will show you a -- a couple here. these are the average highs. i thought i would go far inland just to show how cool it. vacaville should be 82. today, 72. i think they will be lucky to hit that. 83 is what stockton should be. i'm going 74. i would not be surprised that that's a soft 74. 67 cool degrees. east san jose if you are out by reidville view. 68 cool degrees. it's been a long time since we've had temperatures this cool. the low cloud decks and extending into the sacramento

valley. thunderstorms wrapping around the low which is ejected out. there you can see some of that -- some of this is going to head to the northern sacramento valley. i think mendocino county, lake county later this afternoon. there goes one low. here comes the next one dropping into take its place. no change in the pattern here. 50s on the temps. the low cloud are holding up the temps. you combine that with a westerly breeze. 50 degrees with drizzle and a 12-mile-an-hour wind out of the west. that's cold. i mean that he will -- the water temps are very cold. west oakland at 1. west 17 fair beeld and even fair -- fairfield and even fairfield says cloudy. west-northwest sfo, mountain view. water temps, bodega bay, san francisco buoy, monterey are cooler than washington and oregon. 30s in the mountains. 50s through the interior. you can see some of that thunderstorm activity. reno, tahoe, northeast california and maybe up towards

mendocino county,lake county. a cool pattern is establishing itself. no sign of it changing soon. this week and probably all the way into the weekend. showers to the north and temperatures way below normal. next six days it's not so much the showers -- watch right here. this is on monday coming up from the west-southwest. something we will have to keep an eye on. low clouds breezy at times to windy. it's a chilly, chilly pattern. way below normal on the temps. these are soft 72s. i just don't think some temperatures will get above the upper 60s today. i went a little warmer but only for a few. it's a cold pattern for us. sometime it will have to change. maybe, maybe sunday but i -- that moisture coming up from the west-southwest sunday into monday, it bears watching. >> i had to turn the seat warmer on in my car yesterday.

the lake county fire protection district says a two- story home was hit just before 6:00 on sunday night. the lightning ripped a hole in the roof and the storm blew out windows. no one was hurt. the damage is estimated at $15,000. this little boy, given the opportunity of a lifetime. that's 4-year-old cody. may be the youngest firefighter the department has ever see. he was given a chance to be firefighter for a day after his mom had a medical emergency and he wanted to thank the paramedics who saved his mother so he launched of his own fund- raising campaign and doe flighted the money that he collected.

to the scene of a hazardous situation. firefighters are dealing with a hazardous situation after a fire burned through a building in a commercial area. these are live pictures from skyfox. you can see a couple of firefighters on the roof. smoke on the top right side of the screen. this fire started at 12:30. it's on reynolds circle. it's in a commercial area. some of the businesses have some hazardous materials so when the firefighters were putting out the fire, the water got -- got mixed in with the chemicals. >> that's create at a fairly dangerous situation. they don't want the has orderrous water to go -- hazardous water to go down the drain. when we were last talking to janine de la vega, she mentioned there was a flareup, she could smell it. again you can see some more water pouring on some of the smoke. we'll keep an eye on the situation. janine de la vega is there on the scene and we'll have an update from her shortly.

we wanted to give you an update on this situation on the toxic fire. >> they moved her back, she'll be back with another live report from that scene. 7:33. well, a major drug smuggling bust involving bay area airport workers. the justice department says 14 people now charged in a marijuana distribution operation that went through the oakland airport. tara moriarty is there right now joining us live with more on how authorities say the suspects were able to sneak the drugs onto planes. >> well, the key was the baggage handlers. they would avoid security checkpoints, get the packages of marijuana, and then when the plane landed pass them out to passengers who had gone through security and put them in their carry-on books some of the drugs would end up in the checked-in luggage. once the plane landed those drugs would be distribute and

sold. three of those arrested were baggage handlers for southwest airlines. an undercover agent says this problem is not just happening in oakland. but at airports across america. passengers say that the tsa needs to crackdown. >> that's a serious issue. if they can struggle drugs onto planes, what else can be -- can they be capable of, you know, smuggling? i think it's a serious issue. i think tsa has to take a serious look at that. >> reporter: officials say the marijuana was flown to nashville, little rock, and new orleans. conspiracy began as early as july of 250 -- july of 2012. if convicted, the maximum sentence is 40 years and a $5 million fine. the oakland international airport released this statement after the bust saying, airport officials have been working closely with law enforcement from the investigation start and are pleased to see the investigation concluding and

the people involved held accountable. i'm tara moriarty, back to you. >> thank you. 7:35. new this morning, we have new video of excessive flaring the conocophillips refinery late last night. this was sent to us by a ktvu facebook follower. you can see the flaring as that bright light that lit up the night sky. we got a lot of calls into the newsroom about this light. contra costa county fire officials sent out a community alert but that there's no danger to the public. 7:36. well, both the police and the fbi this morning asking for the public's help. they need you to help identify a suspect who was robbed seven -- who has robbed seven banks in seven weeks. brian flores joining us live at a san francisco bank that was robbed to tell us why the fbi says this robber is getting bolder. >> reporter: yeah. and authorities with the fbi say he's becoming more dangerous. we're live on the 200 block of

san francisco feet in san francisco. this is one of the banks he robbed on april 2nd. authorities say he's been doing this since march 30th. take a look at the surveillance photos. fbi describes the suspect as african-american, 6'2" to 6'4". he has an athletic build. he's known to wear polo shirts of the he's been seen wearing a bomber jacket and sunglasses. they say he quite possibly has tattoos on each arm. the fbi says the suspected robber has struck seven banks so far. six of those banks in san francisco and one in antioch. one of those banks a u.s. bank on the 4600 block of mission street. he struck twice, once on march 30th and another time on april 17th. >> sometimes we do get lucky and get very good photos which is why we're using this opportunity to help us identify this individual. we think putting word out there someone will recognize this

photo. >> reporter: the fbi says at first he doesn't have a weapon bun he has brandished -- but he has brandished a handgun in the two most lee sent robberies -- recent rob roys on may 9 -- roshrys on may 9th and -- robberies on may 9th and may 14th. authorities say that the suspect should be considered armed and dangerous. of course, if you have any information, you are urged to call the fbi san francisco police, or antioch police. there's a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction. back to you. >> thank you. it the nfl reportedly has plans to change the way footballs are handled before games as a result of the deflategate scandal. the nfl wants to avoid the possibility that teams can

tamper with footballs. under the current rules, the balls are sent directly to the teams and the balls must be delivered to the officials about two hours before the game. another issue is team said yums and a former 49ers executive is expected to speak up on the topic. the oakland raiders and charges have hired this man, carmen. he says he's not been involved with the league for more than ten years but still understands how the nfl works. he is expected to help push through the nearly 2 billion plan for a shared stadium in the los angeles suburb of carson. raiders owner mark davis want the team to stay in oakland but says thatmy not be possible because that includes a current coliseum being torn down before the new works starts -- new work starts. >> i don't want to build a brand-new stadium and have it be in a construction zone for the next three, four years.

>> that would leave the as without a place to play and the plan that's been approved includes new and separate facilities for each team. no sloat on any stadium plans are scheduled at the nfl meeting this week. 7:39. well, today, east bay voters, you will decide who will hold the district 7 state senate seat. two democrats, they are running for that seat. it includes large parts of alameda and contra costa counties. the district 7 seat used to be held by mark desonia. bonia will term out of her assembly seat next year. she says she has more to achieve in sacramento. in the meantime, her opponent, steve glazer says the state senate needs new faces and new ideas. >> i'm socially progressive but

was built on a less desirable piece of real estate and that bay front property could be sold off to create a park and resort, something that would generate a lot of revenue. >> this is up with of those cases where it's such a high value piece of property. inmates can be housed in a less expensive state. and you can put a new facility in place for a fraction of the cost what the property value was and it would be a state-of- the-art prison. >> potentially the land could go for a billion, approaching 2 billion. >> the governor's office would not comment on the idea of developing the land where san quentin sits. the department of corrections said' there's no plans to sell the property. some inmates don't want san quentin to move either. it's not because of the view. coming up, the reason why the location makes it easier to rehabilitate some of those inmates. here's some very unusual legislation, a bill that would

the water firefighters used got contaminated. that's why they had to put up this caution tape. let's go to the latest pictures of the fire that sparked back up at 7:00 at this met at finishing business. you can see the roof is just completely gone. that damage was from the initial fire that started at 12:30 this morning. here is a photo of that that was taken earlier when the building first caught fire. the smoke and flames were heavy. it grew to a four-alarm fire. firefighters stayed on the outside. there is a placard warning them that chemicals inside the building such as sulfuric acid were inside. they tested the water and dermed it was corrosive and acidic. >> anyone that went through the water could have suffered chemical burns. we're decontaminating all. personnel and ensuring none of them have medical complaints. >> reporter: about 100 firefighters and personnel responded to this fire. we were told at least 45 had to be deacon tam named.

the paper said he was booked on a charge of patry because of a domestic incident. police say mcadams took a plane from the palo alto airport on may 8th. radar signal from the plane was picked up near watsonville that same day but there's been no sign of either mcadams or the plane since then. coming up on 8:36. he's becoming bolder and more dangerous. that's how police and the fbi are describing a bank robber whose targeted sevennen banks in seven weeks -- seven banks in seven weeks. brian flores is live at one of the banks to show us new surveillance photos. >> reporter: yeah, the fbi describes this bank robber as being confident because he has not been caught yet. police hope the camera photos help catch him. this isen on california street in san francisco. he robbed this bank on april 2nd but authorities say he's been robbing banks since march 30th and he has still not been

and equipment. rebuilding san quentin would cost an estimated $18 million. it opened back in july of 1852. now more than 160 years later, the building and operating equipment is deteriorating. many people want to see it go. they argue that the prison could be moved to a less exspivgive location. and the -- expensive location and the bay front party could be sold off to generate tax revenue. but inmates argue the location is important because it's near volunteers an technology that helps -- and technology that helps them. >> we get a lot of people coming into the prison that really focus on supporting and volunteering to make sure the guys have an opportunity to change who want to change. >> i they hav never thought i would be interested -- i never thought i would be doing website apps and things like that.
