>> reporter: we all went to court thinking the hearing would be set back that the case was just the beginning. ut alix techelman pleaded guilty to all charges. both parties say they have closure. given time served she could be out in two years. the woman, who made headlines, appeared in a courtroom relaxed before making a plea to the judge. >> what is your plea? >> guilty. >> reporter: alix techelman pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter, drug and prostitution charges in the 2013 death of forrest hayes. it was on his yacht in the santa cruz harbor. >> reporter: the das office as the charge was changed to involuntary manslaughter after reviewing

surveillance video from forrest hayes' yacht. >> someone described her as sitting down, sipping on a glass of wine watching him die. that is never in the video. >> reporter: prosecutors say alix techelman seemed concerned after injecting forrest hayes with heroin and he overdosed. she panicked and could be seen crying and yelling in the video. >> there is a certain amount of responsibility on his part. >> reporter: but, alix techelman did not call 911 in fact that is why she is facing jail time. -- and that is why she is facing jail time. >> she is now heron free. -- she is now heroin free. >> reporter: the office is pleased with the guilty plea but they disagree with the sentencing

because they wanted her to serve time in state prison notches county jail. given time served she could be out in two years. thank you. now to the largest product recall in the history of the auto industry. the department of transportation announced today it is called -- it is recalling 34 million vehicles because of deadly airbags. >> reporter: they made the announcement this afternoon and the information is so new even the auto manufacturers don't know which models are affected. what we do know is the airbag recall affects 11 different manufacturers. they all use takata airbags in some

of their vehicles. >> up until now takata has refused to acknowledge their airbags are defective. that changes today. today i announce that takata has agreed to declare that airbag inflator's are defective. it is recalling these inflator's and these recalls are nationwide. >> reporter: some of the materials in airbags can degrade over time. the problem makes of the airbags inflate too quickly. at least five people have died. >> this has also begun its own testing program will make sure the replacement airbag inflator's are in fact safe. >> reporter: the safety administration has recalled 18 million vehicles with takata airbags.

it is recommended drivers check the website on a daily basis because another 16 million vehicles will be added to the database. officials will be directly involved in coordinating the replacement of those defective airbags. when i talked to toyota today they told me that was something they never heard of the agency doing before. it sounds like because of the scope of this we call the government is taking some unconsented action. emergency plans on the scene of in oil spill. you can see the oil on the beach. people said the smell of oil is so strong some are evacuating. all of this is happening at the state beach. the oil has now spread into the ocean. the coast guard said the slick is 4 miles wide. officials say a 24-inch pipeline ruptured and

that began leaking into the ocean shortly before noon. the flow has been stopped but crews are working on the cleanup now. we want to bring in our chief meteorologist, bill martin. you are familiar with this area. >> when you get in oil spill it is usually from in oil tanker. this one came from a pipe that was broken and the oil leaked in from the beach. that in some ways is a little better because he won't have as much oil getting far out to the ocean. this is what we are talking about. it is 300 miles south of the bay area. if you have driven down highway 1 you know this area. it is right up in here, i can come in a little closer.

it is. what we are seeing now are winds that are blowing out of the northwest. they are blowing something like this in this area. they are taking the oil and pressing it down towards town. the other thing we have -- i think we have some video. we do have reports now of a couple whales a couple whales in this area. this is the beach. you can see the oil on the beach. what you don't see is that water is black. that is a lot of oil on the beach. we were talking about it in the newsroom it is a good size oil spill. this will be a big deal. we will cover it tonight at 10:00. right now the oil spill is heading south down towards santa barbara. the western conference finals get underway tonight in oakland.

a coalition of biker gangs was holding a turf meeting when an uninvited gang showed up. they say the shooting stemmed from a parking space. almost two dozen officers were at the restaurant because of a tip about possible violence. police say they only opened fire when the bikers turned their guns towards police. >> the police did an awesome job. if it was not for them it would have been a bloodbath. >> it is not clear weather any of those killed were shot by police. there is concern about the possibility of gaining retaliation and more violence. for the third time in a month a dead whale has watched up at a beach. people at the sanctuary say it is a small female gray whale found on half moon bay. scientist believe it may be the same way of floating offshore the last two

a business park in san jose has an environmental mess on it hands. the water was contaminated after chemicals inside caught fire. we have new video of the fire and what is being done to clean it up. >> reporter: this video shows the smoke raging in this building. firefighters came on scene this morning and started losing it down from the truck. >> i did not realize how big it was until i actually looked at it. >> reporter: the business on fire does metal finishing work. a packard tipped off firefighters that has it is chemicals were inside. >> it was highly corrosive. something that can eat through your clothing. so, we immediately established it was more of a hazardous materials incident. >> reporter: there were large

pools of contaminated runoff water. firefighters were worried about it going into drains. there was also concern for the firefighters stepping in it. >> anyone who went to the watered clue had gotten chemical burns. >> reporter: file officials are referring to it as "chemical soup". they say sulfuric acid and cyanide are in it. so, the area had to be closed down. firefighters told all the businesses they had to stay out for safety reasons. that put this owner in a bind her workers could not start any jobs this morning because the tools were inside. >> it will push us back for the rest of the week. >> reporter: are you understanding about it? >> i just need to contact our customers to let them know. hopefully they will see the news. >> reporter: firefighters keeping watch until the cleanup is

tonight there is another scheduled protest and business owners are worried. we are outside city hall, those business owners seen to be losing faith in the police. >> reporter: that is what they are telling me. this is where these protest are set to start at 6:00. the start is not what people are worried about. boarded up windows have become commonplace in oakland. >> we are not protected. >> reporter: during the protest his business sustained a broken windows. total cost to repair them $13,000. >> i don't know what we are going to do. >> reporter: across the street dozens of cars were vandalized. >> reporter: down the block another business with two broken windows. >> we have been watching this happen. >> reporter: now these windows

be here. referred one group may be canceling. it looks like they are not here yet. >> let's hope it stays peaceful. thank you. more on the news from the coastline, we are watching emergency crews respond to an oil spin near the state beach 20 miles from downtown santa barbara. a pipeline broke and began spilling oil at about noon. the flow was not stopped for three hours. we don't know yet just how much oil leak. i do see the la times siding the number $21,000. that is not confirmed. it is at least 4 miles wide. we have been watching these pictures all day long. it has a lot to do with wind and ocean current but it is hard to see that part of our state like that.

will have a massive dose of fog as you had this morning. thursday, there is an opportunity for a little more drizzle and some rain. it will be a fine line. 58-70 degrees tomorrow, the sun will come out a little quicker tomorrow. but we will stay in this unsettled pattern right to wednesday, thursday, friday and saturday it will change. the wind will shift a little bit. the inversion will reform and we will get warmer inland. we will be up to the low 80s by the end of the weekend. 63 in oakland. cloudy all day, lunch time it starts to clear out. air quality is good in this pattern. the fire danger is down in this pattern.

video of an illegal based on that killed two men. dean potter and graham hunt jumped last week. police say they were attempting to collide to a notch but hit the rocks. one of the men was wearing a helmet and it is hoped the video from the camera will explain what went wrong. in san francisco pedestrian deaths are very high. there is a plan to eliminate all traffic test in ten years. the city released a progress report on the effort. >> reporter: some say the projects require some paint, such as of this bike lane but a new report released today the city says it has a long way to go towards eliminating traffic deaths on san francisco streets. san francisco among the most dangerous neighborhoods to walk across the street.
