i'm tori campbell. >> i'm dave clark. let's check your weather and traffic. how is it looking, steve? >> gray. if you have the sun enjoy it, temperatures even though they are in the 70s are running below everybody. continuing cool. in fact, the seven-day outlook puts pretty good rain up in the sierra nevada. about 2 inches between now, next week and northern california. if that's the case, our pattern is not going to change that much. if you like this, and if you like thunderstorms, mendocino county, lake county may be in the fix. one low ejects out and moves across the country. another low moved into southern california. this one is on its way for us tomorrow. i think it will give us an even cooler pattern and more drizzle. 50s on the temps. they haven't really budged. series of systems continue to rotate in. that means our pattern stays cool. a few high clouds. i think they will push east and south of the area. low clouds and sunny.

it's a cool pattern. afternoon hours well to the north. 70s for a few but a lot of 60s and below normal temperatures. sal, anything good to report? we have a couple of good things. first of all, we don't have a lot of slow traffic in some areas which is surprising. it's making up for it in others. we'll start off with a look at the commute here on the macarthur maze approach. 80 looks good but 580 at the macarthur maze approach is going to be slow. 580 is backed up from the 980 interchange to that macarthur maze and you're going to see slow traffic when up get to the toll plaza. when up get to the bay bridge toll plaza, you will see the traffic backed up. it's about a 25-minute delay before you make it onto the bridge. i want to bring in the help of skyfox now looking at the 238/880 interchange. it's a lot better than i thought. we're looking at slow traffic earlier but that ramp from 238 to 880 south is not all that bad. southbound traffic is a little

bit slow as you try to make your way from hayward to union city. it's not as bad as it has been. in marin county, southbound 101 at lucas valley road. this is going to affect traffic coming through marinwood and heading down to central san rafael. 7:02. back to the desk. >> thank you. we begin with a developing story. a 13-hour long standoff continues this morning. tara moriarty is live on the scene where police have surrounded the domestic violence suspect. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. it's been about two hours since s.w.a.t. teams first arrived. we saw them make a move to go the home where the man is holed off. then they retreated and we think they are regrouping. we can't show you the scene. we can show you the building that looks similar to the one the man is holed up in. police have asked us not to show the actual scene for fear

it might compromise safety. we're at sherwin and sunnydale where police have been trying to coax the suspect out for 11 hours. it starts out at a domestic violence situation at 8:15 last night. officers say the man who they believe is in his 30s made threats against his girlfriend. she got out safely. the suspect then barricaded himself in the home. during the night. he did come out on the balcony and yelled at officers. he could be armed. that's why police are taking such precautions. we met three men. they were evacuated from their home last night. they had not been able to get inside. they slept in the car and then went to work. police have cordoned off about a block in each direction from the suspect's home and again we're sort of looking down the street. i can sort of describe to you what i see, which is a lot of patrol cars and a couple of -- there's the bomb squad, tactical unit, two tactical units and an ambulance. we're not able to show you the

actual scene because police have asked us not to. live from san francisco, i'm tara moriarty, back to you. >> thank you. a 6-year-old south bay girl is safe while two people accused of kidnapping her are in custody. the reported abduction prompted an amber alert overnight. authorities say these two pictures -- these two suspects on the screen, 39-year-old maurice cheadle and 35-year-old dawn atkisson took the 6-year- old girl from her home near cleveland and olive eave -- avenues. an hour ago, the officers located girl and she is safe . she was found at a home, 80 miles northeast of san jose. police say the girl came out of the home with cheadle who surrendered peacefully. he's the ex-boyfriend's of the child's mother but not the biological dad. steve glazer defeated susan

bonia for the state senate seat. with all precincts reporting, glazer has 54% of the vote and bonia has 45%. she's a former teacher. glazer made headlines when he said he wanted to ban b.a.r.t. workers from striking. glazer will fill the district state senate seat, seat number 7. he will have to run for re- election next fall. glazer will join us live at 7:45 in the studio. some members of the oakland city council are accusing their own board of going too far. a group of people protested the construction of an apartment tower stormed the desk.

the chronicle reports that rebecca kaplan asked whether new security measures violated a state law governing public meetings. you watched the warriors' game last night? the warriors after coming back from being down by 16 in the second quarter and almost blowing a fourth quarter lead, they hung on and beat the rockets in game one of the western conference finals. >> here comes curry. curry for three. [ cheers ] >> steph curry, the mvp led the way. had 34 points. the warriors beat the rockets 110-106. and 11 of his points dame in the last six minutes. he outperformed james harden of the rockets. the mvp runner-up and harden still played well. but it was in the post-game news conference that steph curry was overshadowed himself by his 2-year-old daughter, riley. >> daddy. >> mold on one second -- hold on one second.

(announcer) the subaru xv crosstrek. symmetrical all-wheel drive plus 34 mpg. love. it's what makes a subaru a subaru. welcome back. 7:11. emergency cleanup resumes this morning. they are trying to remove thousands of oil that leaked along the beautiful pristine california coastline yesterday. an underground pipeline 11 miles long ruptured yesterday near the state beach, west of santa barbara. the oil went into a drain that ran into the ocean. preliminary estimates, 21,000 gallons of crude oil leaked from the pipe. but the coast guard thinks it could be more than that. it left a thick coat of black

tar. it stretches four miles wide. cleanup experts say the winds could send that oil four miles south, additional. a woman at the beach smelled the fume from it. she called in the spill around noontime. that leak was eventually plugged three hours later. >> beach was covered in black oil. >> the peach and local fisheries have been shut down. the beach may be closed through the popular memorial day holiday. i was telling tori campbell, that's one of my favorite beaches to go to. the pipeline belongs to texas- based plains all american pipeline. the company says it deeply regrets that leak. they are trying to help with the cleanup. they don't know what caused the leak in the first place. police in waco, texas -- tori. 7:12. i think my producer said -- i'm

sorry. all right. we want to go to gigi live at the beach in santa barbara to tell us what's happening there. does it smell really bad, gigi? >> reporter: it does. good morning. good morning, everyone. dave was talking about the pristine beach and sadly, nothing pristine about it this morning. take a look. you might be able to see. there's oil everywhere. crude oil, it's sticky, it's gooey, it's extremely smelly. as a matter of fact, down the beach further away, there's a firm here, some people from a firm in little rock, arkansas, they are doing air sampling right now. they won't tell us the results, but they are not wearing masks. they told us that was a good signen, even though the air is thick with that smell of crude oil. as dave was saying an estimated 21,000 gallons of crude oil has spilled out and that oil slick

was about four miles wide yesterday. they are just going out right now to do a new assessment this morning. they want to see what the wind did overnight. our chopper spotted the oil slick moving towards somebody somebody. right now refugio state beach is west of santa barbara. it's moving. the wind is shifting it. that's concern. marine life, mammal life. we can only imagine what it will do to a bird's feathers. some animals were rescued yesterday. a lot of if, were trying to come out and volunteer. yesterday, they said they had enough emergency personnel out here. the good news, the oil flow has been stopped but the damage has been done. we hope to learn a little bit more later on today exactly how many gallons spilled out and what the emergency plan now is to clean this mess up. and also there's a very popular place for camping.

refugio state is closed. but will it be open in time for the memorial day weekend. that's the question a lot of folks are asking. you will be following that story right there, too, on ktvu. we're live down south here in santa barbara county. back to you. >> thank you. glad we were able to get a live report. we'll continue to follow it throughout the day. 7:15. meantime, police in waco, texas say the deadly weekend shootout involving rival motorcycle gangs, it started with a parking dispute. investigators say the fight may have been sparkedder over a parking spot or -- sparked over a parking spot or somebody running over someone's foot or both. the dispute continued inside the restaurant. that's where the fighting and then the shooting started. the fight spilled back outside. when it was over nine people were dead, 18 others were wounded. there will be extra security in waco, over the upcoming memorial day weekend when several events traditionally

ath draing motorcycle -- ath draing motorcycle riders -- attracting motorcycle riders are scheduled. the san francisco fire department is getting millions of dollars in extra funding. the news came as a new fire station was open on treasure island to replace an old one that closed because of mold. mayor ed lee says the fire department's budget is being increased by $35 million. the money will allow for the training of 82 million firefighters, and emts and paramedics. the money will be used to fix aging fire stations and upgrade technology. a police crackdown is underway in one of san francisco's most notorious or most famous neighborhoods. officers are rolling out what they call the haight street. the captain says his station is overwhelmed with complaints

from residents and merchants about drug use, fighting, dogs off leash, illegal parking and loitering. >> all of those quality of life issues are what we're responsible for at park stations to not overlook but to take station. >> the captain says the new campaign does not mean officers are hardening their stance on the homeless. he says warnings will be issued first and the homeless will receive information about city resources. repeat offenders, though, will be cited. an additional two officers have been assigned to walk the haight with others patrolling the neighborhood on bikes, as you can see right there. let's get you to where you need to know. how is it looking? >> this is the peak of the commute. you will see a lot of slow traffic. let's begin with the east bay. this is a very slow commute on highway 4 coming up to the baypoint area. we had a lot of people stuck in slow traffic on highway 4 as

you drive up to the willow pass grade or drive out of antioch earlier because of a crash that was in the lanes for a bit. also hooking at at commute, if you are driving on westbound highway 80 at the toll plaza, that is backed up this morning all the way out to the macarthur maze. it's kind of a -- it's been a rough one trying to get into san francisco. southbound 101 marinwood to san rafael, an accident at lucas valley road. a lot of slow traffic in novato. they pushed the accident to the side. but traffic is slow. near roland is begins to slow heading south. we have an announcement coming up in a half an hour. all of the names we've been collecting to name the spider on ktvu, well, we're going to make a decision and these are the five final iles. webster, speedy, bore ritz, charlotte and peter parker -- boris, charlotte and peter

parker. we'll be announcing the winner. let's go to steve in the weather center. good morning. we have a lot of low cloud in place. some areas get the sun. other areas say what sun? if anything a continuation through most of the month. i'm having a tough time dealing with much of a warmup as we go to sunday, also monday. some tweets coming in, robin, mixture of sun and clouds in pleasant hill. more sun than we've seen this week. usually pleasant hill is in on the sun. drag, drizzly morning in sausalito. there will be a lot more drizzle, i think tomorrow morning. another low works its way up. a few high clouds off to the east. most of those should clear the area. thunderstorms continue to fire up. mendocino county, lake county, later in the afternoon, i see no change in the pattern. one system rolls through. another one driving into southern california. here is our upstream for thursday. and that looks like it will give us sa continuation of this

cool pattern if not cooler for some inland. i know, hard to believe. but i think tomorrow morning. 50s on the temps. and also in daly city currently 53 from antonio here with a seven-mile-an-hour breeze out of the south. very foggy conditions in dc. there's a little bit of a breeze for some. 16 miles an hour out of the west, fairfield out of the west, southwest for most. water temperatures holding in there. we'll see if they stay. cold, might, a ton of rain. a lot of it moving to the great lakes. but main story is texas and oklahoma. 17 inches of rain has already fallen in norman, oklahoma. there's still 11 days to go. the seven-day outlook puts another 6, 7 on top of them. can you imagine two feet of rain in one month? r for us we'll have a continuation of the pattern with a lot of thunderstorm activity and showers in the sierra and northern california over the next seven days as well. low clouds, plenty to go around. some showers to the north. it's cool but even with the

7:24. is your car on the list? the federal government has announced the largest consumer recall in u.s. history impacting nearly 34 million cars for defective air bags. doug luzader joins us with more on how automakers will deal with the volume of repairs. good morning, doug. >> reporter: tori, a lot of vehicles are gonna have to

contend with. i'm sitting in one of the vehicles that's gonna be targeted for a recall here. the problem isn't that the air bag won't work at all. if you get into an accident, it will or should. but the problem is, in some cases, along with the air bag, hot pieces of shrapnel have been shooting out as well. in some cases, drivers have been injured. in some case, some drivers have been killed. air bags are supposed to save lives. but the explosive force in the defective backs can make them deadly. you can see metal come out. this woman said she was hit during an accident. >> i said i cannot see anything. i'm totably blind. >> reporter: the federal government has now announced that the air bag manufacturer has agreed to a huge expansion of an existing recall. >> let me repeat that. te te cau da -- te cau da --

tekata. >> reporter: they've already faced fines of $14,000 a day. the number of carmakers involved is staggering. it involves nearly 34 million cars. the recall will trigger a process that could overwhelm the auto industry. almost 34 million vehicles. that's a mammoth task. it will probably take years to get this completed to the extent that it will be completed. and the likelihood is it will never be completed 100%. >> reporter: the recall has been the subject of congressional hearings, with disturbing pictures of drivers hit by the de -- debris. the concern, nobody knows why it's happening just it happens more often in warm climates. raising concern the manufacturer can fix it and do it quickly. automakers should be notifying owners by mail that their cars need a replacement air bag but

in lieu of that, you can always get your vehicle identification number which is located right here in the windshield. you can log onto the website of the national highway traffic administration and that should tell you if your car is one of the affected vehicles. but first of all, the website has been overloaded the last 24 hours. if your car needs a new air bag, it may take a fair amount of time. when you factor in 34 million vehicles, it will take a long time to get all of those things cycled through dealers. tori? >> all right. a lot of work ahead. thank you. we put a link to the safer cars site on ktvu.com. look for the recall story right on the front page. controversy over plans for a new water park.

a cool air mass aloft. if you get the sun, it's not bad. but there is a westerly wind and temperatures are below normal. a few showers will pop up in mendocino county and lake county. it's a cool pattern. the low cloud deck is slow to peel back for some. 50s, 60s or low 70s. all right, sal. 7:33. what do you have for us? a lot of slow traffic. let's take a look at what we have. starting off in the east bay as usual. that's where all of the slow traffic is and we'll start off -- i think we'll start off at the bay bridge toll plaza because that's really ground zero of the slowdowns especially getting into the city. don't get that space on the right of your screen fool you. there is a little bit of a space for cash payers. it's still crowded getting into san francisco. also looking at a commute here on the san mateo bridge, that's been superbusy as you drive over to highway 101. the commute there has become a little bit slow on northbound and southbound 101 in san

mateo. i want to show you slow traffic in concord and walnut creek. southbound 680 is backed up solid from 242 to highway 24. it stays kind of slow in the danville and alamo area. back to the desk. we just showed you a live picture a few minutes ago but crews on the san mateo are burying the car of two dead whales. christien kafton is live in pacifica and what we're finding out about another dead whale that's washed ashore. >> reporter: that brings the number to three. if you have been following our progress, you will remember in the last hour, we were tailing the crew. thief made their way down on the beach and are starting to dig the hole to put that whale in. this seems to be the remains of the whale that washed ashore here. this is the sperm whale that

washed ashore. there was also another whale that washed ashore here that was a female humpback whale. one more. we'll get to that whale in a minute. that whale washing ashore in half moon bay reported yesterday. we went to look for it and we'll try to loop back and see if we can't find it. you can see the crew digging the massive pit. we understand the pit has to be about 15 feet deep or so to make sure the whale does not reemember and come back out -- re-emerge and come back out. the major reason, is the odor. that's been the number one topic of conversation. the question that everybody has had for me being out here personally. what does it smell like? the smell is unbelievable. when it hits you, it's very, very powerful at times. you hope for a breeze of wind to get it out of the area and we did talk with one resident

out here every day. he described that stench and said it's unbelievable. >> it was tolerable for a while. it wasn't as ugly as another dying creature or dead creature. but it turned from very close to rotten to rotten. [laughter] >> reporter: yeah, not really a laughing malter for a lot of folks -- matter for a lot of the folks. you are looking at video of the site where they buried one whale yesterday. this crew out here does have some experience in terms of burying whales. the plan apparently, dig a deep hole. make sure that it's far enough up the beach so that it doesn't get eroded away and the drop the dead whale. we're hearing the body of a

whale washed ashore. we were out there earlier this morning and did not see it. but we'll loop back to the area and see if the whale has washed back ashore. the crews making a lot of progress. neighbors out here saying they are very happy that the smell from these whales will be gone in short order. >> thank you for the update. we'll talk to you later. 7:37. a teenaged girl in walnut creek says she was attacked over the weekend on a popular walking trail near las lomas high school. she said it happened sunday morning on iron horse trail and a man in his 50s tried to sexual assault her. she fought off the attacker and ran into a nearby apartment complex where she called her parents and the police. the man described as latino, 5'6", with a thin mustache, medium build and he was wearing a blue and purple rain jacket with a hood. a prospy stut led --

prostitute pled guilty to the death of an overdose man. alix tichelman was sentenced to six years in about police -- in prison for the heroin-related death of forrest hayes. the d.a.'s office reduced the criminal charge from volunteer to involunteer manslaughter after reviewing surveillance video from that yacht. >> penal code section 192-b, involuntary manslaughter, what is your plea? >> guilty. >> prosecutors say she appeared to be concerned and was crying when forrest hayes overdosed. but she didn't call 911. that's why she received jail time. because of her time already served, she could be out in two years. the bay area is the new home to one of the largest whole food markets in the country. it officially opens in dublin.

and janine de la vega says it has some features you might not expect in a grocery store. kind of interesting, janine. >> reporter: yeah, it is. this store -- as you mentioned, it doesn't open until 10:00 a.m., we've already run into a few customers who thought it opened up early to welcome them, they do have a bus out here. they are offering free espresso drinks from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. this has unique features. 40,000 square feet they put in a wayne tasting room and tap bar. they have a juice bar, barbecue bar, noodle bar as well as all of the fresh organic food that the store is known to carry. there is also an outdoor patio with a fire pit where they will be bringing in live bands so people can come and socialize

and eat and drink. >> i think it's great for dublin. they don't have a lot of things here. they have the small restaurants and -- but as far as the concept of whole food, i think it will do real well. as far as the wayne, it's great. [laughter] >> i will be here friday night. >> reporter: whole foods wanted the location in dublin because it knows that there are a lot of young families that live here who have active lifestyles and are into maintaining their health. the growing area, they are hoping it attracts more upscale retail businesses here. where this is located on dublin boulevard, this is a fairly new shopping center. a lot of the stores are still waiting to open up. there is an electric charging station for cars. very upscale and really emerging. the scene is very good for the ski of dublin. back to you. >> certainly good news and good there's coffee out there for some of those folks who showed

up early. plans to build a new swim park in the east bay is moving ahead despite the fact we're in a drought. the work is already underway in dublin at the site of this future aquatic center. the plan calls for a year- round, indoor pool and 11-lane outdoor pool and waterslides. critics say building this now sends the wrong message at a time when residents are required to cut back on their water use. >> i think the timing is wrong and i think the city could serve its people by serving the more environmentally friendly community parks that people want. >> at a meeting last night, city officials said the project was put on hold in 2008 during the recession. now is the time to move forward. but the dublin san ramon services district says it can't guarantee it will even have the water to fill the pools when they open in 2017. two men are facing multiple charges after police uncovered a plot to attack a florida

successful. so they had a reason to engage in the race in a very fierce, hard-fought way. that's why all of the mailers happened. >> an important issue you ran on. no more b.a.r.t. strikes. >> yes. >> what can you do to really make sure this happens? there's a lot of people, union workers who are very much against banning the strikes. >> there was a billion in the legislature less than a month ago. it was heard in committee. didn't get a single detectivic vote t was authored katherine maker. that's an example i would co- author that bill. is it gonna happen tomorrow? no. unfortunately, the b.a.r.t. union has a lot of influence. that's why no one would speak up. when for me, it was crazy.

work their way down the old weather highway and move right in. our next one will swing in tomorrow closer to us than the one down in southern california. that's going to enhance this low cloud deck and i think give us more drizzle than what we're seeing. water temps have come up. the temps have sneaked up. 56, 57. you throw in a 20-mile-an-hour wind with a gust at 26, that's pretty cold. a westerly breeze. it's off the ocean. there's one system. there's another system. another one will be in here tomorrow. you can see a few high clouds. it looks like most of that has ended. breezy at times. local drizzle. the cool pattern for many. well below normal for some. temperatures stay in the 60s, 50s and 70s. some of the warmest will be clearlake maybe out to brentwood, vacaville. we named the sphidder, sal -- spider, what do we have? it's a big letdown. what do -- okay. i will do traffic. let's take a look at the commute now. and traffic is going to be slow at the bay bridge toll plaza, it is backed up to the macarthur maze. 15, 20-minute delay. once you get on the bridge, it looks slow. west of treasure island. it's slow at the bottom of the incline trying to get on the bridge. also looking at the commute, i've looked at 880. we have slow traffic from oracle arena area as you drive up to downtown oakland. 580 is not much better. we have some lowing at highway 13 on the way to lakeshore. i put arrows on the east bay commute. all of a sudden, we've had a lot of slow traffic on the commutes. you know, it shouldn't concern you but it's definitely slow. no picnic there. we go to the peninsula. traffic very slow heading south into the valley. 8:0. back to the desk. a developing story in san francisco continues at this hour. a man suspected of threatening his girlfriend remains holed up inside an apartment building. the standoff forced neighbors to evacuate their homes and they were not allowed back

overnight. tara moriarty joins us live from the scene and any movement yet from police? >> reporter: not too much. although we did notice that s.w.a.t. teams were on the bullhorn trying to coax the suspect out. we do know that if -- if you take a look behind me, there is a tactical unit right here sort of blocking what's behind it and that's something that the police do not want us to show because it could compromise officers' safety. police negotiators have been trying to get the suspect to surrender for a long type, almost 12 hours -- long time, almost 12 hours. this started out as a domestic violence situation around 8:15 last night. officers say the man made threats against his girlfriend who lives next door. she got out safely. the suspect bare ray cadeed himself inside the -- barricaded himself inside the

home. one neighbor said it's been tense. >> he's a young man. we don't want him to die. everything that's going on, all of these killings, we don't want that here. >> currently the suspect is inside, clearly agitated. we've been trying to negotiate with the suspect to come out peacefully. >> reporter: now, during the night, the suspect he was in his 30s came out on the balcony and yelled at officers. neighbors say that the suspect has a child but the child was not home at the time. police have core dorned area off -- cordoned the area off. officers are saying that they hope the suspect in this case will surrender peacefully. live from san francisco, tara moriarty, back to you. >> thank you. 8:04. new this morning, a 6-year-old san jose girl who was the focus of an amber alert just a couple of hours ago is safe now while

two people accused of kidnapping her, they are in custody. the reported abduction in san jose triggered an overnight amber alert. the authorities say the two suspects you see here, 39-year- old maurice cheadle, and 35- year-old dawn atkisson, took the 6-year-old girl from her home near cleveland and offive avenue -- olive avenues. two hours ago, police in stockton say the girl was found safe at a home in stockton. that's about 80 miles northeast of san jose. we just received this new video of police officers at the home a short time ago. police say the girl came out of the home with cheadle who surrendered peacefully. he's the ex-boyfriend of the little girl's mother but is not the biological father. after a decade of budget cuts, the san francisco fire department is getting millions of dollars in extra funding. this came as a new fire station was opened on treasure island

to replace an old one that closed because of mole. ed lee says the budget is being increased by $35 million. the money will allow for the i draing of 82 new firefighters a -- dash for the training of 82 new firefighters and emts and paramedics. a police crackdown is underway in san francisco in one of the city's most famous neighborhood. police are rolling out what they call the haight street heat. now, the new captain of the department's park station that patrols the haight he's ordered his you as to increase their enforcement of quality of life crimes. the captain told ktvu his station is overwhelmed with complaints from residents and from business owners about drug use, about fighting, dogs off the leash, illegal parking and loitering. >> all of those quality of life issues are what we're responsible for at park station

to not overlook but to take action. >> now, the captain says the new campaign doesn't mean his officers are hardening their stands on the homeless. he says warnings will be issued first and that the homeless will get information about city resources. repeat offenders, though, they will be cited. and an additional two officers have been assigned to walk the haight with other officers patrolling on bicycles. some members of the oakland city council are accusing interest own board of -- their own board of going too far to maintain security at public hearings. the controversy stems from a ma i 5th council meeting when a group stormed the city council desk. city hall security guards have since started asking people to sign their names when entering the building to attend city council hearings and they are searching peopling a bags. a couple of people complained. the chronicking reports that

rebecca kaplan asked if this vie was a vitionlation -- if this was a violation. a report that came out yesterday says san francisco is on its way to completing 24 projects in 24 months that includes a wider bike lane on polk street, parking has been eliminated near intersections in the tenderloin. so people walking and driving consider see each other better. on folsom street, the lights have been timed to slow down the cars. >> we've made a little measurable improvement and reduced the number of fatalities and injuries. there's still a long way to go. six pedestrians have died so far in san francisco including a 12-year-old boy hit by a muni train on the way to school. last year, there was 17 deaths.

8:08. we're expecting to learn more about an oil spill off the coast of santa barbara. >> the coast guard estimates 21,000 gallons of crude oil leaked from a ruptured pipe yesterday. however, that figure is likely to change after authorities conduct a flyover today. our reporter, gigi, is at a state beach where some of the rocks are covered in black tar. such a sad site there, gigi. >> reporter: it is. a very somber moment. take a look at what's happening now. scientists walking the beach, getting a sampling of what's happening in their hazmat suits. you can -- it's not a site we see every day. this is usually a very pristine beach cleared with campers, white sand and blue water and look at this right now, what's happening here as 2,000

gallons. that was the estimate, a four- mile wide oil spill. as they do their morning assessment right now. they've been spending the morning doing air sampling. they've been taking air sampling of the sand, the oil on the rocks. the big concern, marine life. we've seen horrible pictures already of birds just covered in oil. i took a walk down the beach. there's been booms placed to try to protect the creek. not all of the wildlife is going to be lucky. the ruptured pipe has been capped. that's a good thing but the damage is done. it's not only ecological damage but there will be economic damage, too, because this is a big campsite. a lot of money will be spent on this cleanup. now, press conference has been call for 10:00 --ed for 10:00 this morning. we should learn more about what the wind did. we're north of santa barbara itself. but early this morning, our

over another person's foot or maybe both. the fight spilled over into the restaurant and then the shooting began. the fight spilled back outside. when it was all over, nine people were dead, 18 were wounded. almost 200 were arrested. there will be tighter security in waco, over the upcoming memorial day weekend when several events that traditionally attract motorcycle riders are scheduled. the recall of da cau da air -- takata air bags is the biggest in history. some of the materials used in the air bags can degrade when exposed to humidity. that causes the bags to inflate too quickly in a crash and pieces of metal can be sprayed across the passenger can cabin. at least five people have died in the u.s. because of this defect. until now, takata has refused

happening right now, work crews in pacifica are busy, they are back out on a beach working to bury the carcasses of two beach whales that recently washed ashore. here's new video. you can see the workers out there starting a second day of their work. they used this big excavator to dig holes on the beach. that's where the carcasses will be buried. now, the whales washed ashore at the beginning of this month and last month. the people who live nearby have been complaining that the smell was unbearable. >> it was tolerable for a while. it wasn't so ugly as some other dying creature or dead creature but it turned from the -- very close to -- question close to rotten -- very close to rotten to rotten. [laughter] >> these whales are being buried 15 feet down. making sure they stay buried. all of this comes as another

dead whale washed ashore on a beach in half moon bay. marine biologists say it's a small female gray while that washed ashore at kelly beach. they are planning to check it out later today. biologists think it was the same whale seen floating offshore the past couple of days. 8:34. a teenaged girl in walnut creek says she was attacked over the weekend on a popular walking trail near las lomas high school. the 16-year-old says it happened sunday morning. she was on iron horse trail and that a man in his 50s tried to sexual assault her. she fought off the attacker then ran into a nearby apartment complex where she called her parents and the police. the man is described as latino in miss 50s about -- in his 50s, 5'6", thin mustache, medium build and was wearing a blue and purple rain jacket with a hood. a prostitute pled guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the overdose death of a former

talking about the local political race. pam cook talked with the winner of the hotly-concontested race -- contested race. >> yes. steve glazer said his town is excited. but does admitting the campaigning was fierce. he came in to talk about his win over susan bonilla in the special election. we heard from a lot of people who were throwing out of all of the excessive campaign mailings, stopped answering their phones. many people didn't vote. voter turnout in the special election was just about 23%. glazer says the reason for the mailing and phoning, there are people who don't like outspoken bollitions. he's also been an outspoken voice in the fight to ban b.a.r.t. workers from striking. >> bans transit strikes is a prudent thing to do. it's about trying to make sure that our economy keeps going

welcome back. 2 investigates has uncovered safety concerns about a company that drives the sick and the poor to doctor -- to their doctor's appointments. over the last month, ktvu observed several med express vans picking up and dropping off customers in the east bay. one of those vans had no license plates. we saw others with spare tires and broken mirrors and body damage on the van. now, eric rasmussen is here with more. >> the company says it's really doing nothing wrong. we first heard about this case last month. the chp -- we heard they actually pulled over a vehicle and coot the driver for having -- cited the driver.

you can see the video of the vans. we decided to look into all of this because the company is a medi-cal provider. many get assistance from the state for these rides. at the end of the day, we're talking about tax payer dollars. >> you've been watching these vans for a long time. what's some of the worst things you saw. >> broken side-view mirror. a lot of vans had body damage, questionable tires you see in the video. we asked the owner about all of these things, the missing insurance, the no license plate. they insist this is all being taken care of. the vehicles are ensured despite all of the evidence we found. one thing we haven't seen for ourselves but we learned from the chp and in the citation is that one of these vans pulled over last night was cited for a number of things but the officer found it didn't have any seat belts. >> the state, why aren't they shutting them down? >> well, the state says it has been looking into this company.

you. looks very fancy. >> reporter: you wouldn't think that i would be sitting here in a grocery store but check it out. this is a wine tasting room here in this whole foods in dublin. and you can see, you know, they poured me some vino here. you can come in grocery shops. if you get hungry, they have a menu, there is a tasting menu for food. if you don't like what is on the menu, there's food that is just steps away. but a beautiful bar here. i also want to show you what is outside. we did take some video of this earlier. take a look at the outdoor patio, there is space for 100 people here. they can hang out by a fire pit, listen to live music, the store is gonna bring in musicians and groups during the summer. they want this dublin store to be more than just a place to shop and buy groceries they want people to headache out with family and friends. it's -- hang out with family

and friends. shoppers are excited. >> i did not know about that. i like wine so i will definitely try it out. i've never gone grocery shopping and had a glass of wine. i think it's awesome they want to think different like that. that's great. >> reporter: the store is 40,000 square feet. one of the largest whole foods in northern california. it features one of the biggest pizza venues as well as a juice bar, noodle bar, bakery. there is a heavy emphasis on locally grown foods. they see a lot of growth potential here. >> we felt like dublin is at a crossroads when it comes to commuters coming through the area up and down the 580 corridor. to boil it down into a short answer, location, location, location. >> whole foods has a bus parked out in front where they are serving free espresso drinks until 10:00 a.m. there are some customers waiting to get in. they told me they don't mind
