happened and we are bringing in all the resources to respond. >> while they said this afternoon more than 100,000 gallons of oil might have spilled, together the two resulting oil slicks are 9 miles long. the area is rich with marine life. here two whales are seen wimming. -- swimming. a helicopter is used to scare them away. recovering the spilled oil takes a lot of labor and consideration of wind, currents and weather. >> a slow process. but we want to make sure we do it right so we can get the beaches back to their condition. >> again, this is a developing story. we will have more on this tonight at 6:00 p.m. and i will go back to the desk now. >> the bay area is not anone to the spill that santa barbara is -- immune to the spill that santa barbara is seeing.

our team coverage continues with ktvu's john sasaki. >> reporter: we are across from the pipelines you can see there with a refinery nearby. officials told me an il-- told me an oil spill could cause problems in the bay or residential neighborhoods. >> reporter: the elementary school is a school where parents feel kids are safe and cared for. >> i love the school. the principal is great. the school, the program, everything. >> reporter: when i won't pointed out the -- when i pointed out the signs parents were shocked. >> something could happen. as a parent, it is concerning. >> i feel worried right now. we need to talk with the principal about it. or with the city. i don't know. we have to do something. >> reporter: officials told me the walls were constructed in

deflect problems that might arise from a rupture. >> construction crew whose don't call before they start digging. >> reporter: he says there is a web of pipelines that run in and around the oil refineries. >> there are lines that run underground all over the county, really. the bigger lines pose the most danger but a small line could pose just as much danger. >> reporter: protesting refinery money and politics, they say oil spills are a hazard. >> that's a clear and present danger right now. if they expand, bringing in more and more crude oil by marine shipment into the bay we would then expect that that would increase the risk.

>> reporter: those advocates added the peer is a major concern because any spill there could be disastrous. officials at chevron tell me it is perfectly safe. frank? >> john sasaki in martinez, thank you. for many people in santa barbara this is a grim reminder of a spill in 1969 that released 4 million gallons. the spill originated from blow off at a off shore oil rig. 3500 sea birds were killed and oil continued to pollute the beaches for months. outrage galvanized the environmental movement across the country. months after that spill the environmental protection agency was established by president nixon. the spill inspired the first earth day in 1970 and in 1972 the california coastal commission was founded. new tonight, a woman in her

70s attacked in the middle of the day on mother's day. now her family says she is in a coma. ktvu's mike mibach is live now, police think there is someone in particular who may know more about what happened? >> reporter: yeah. at the same time they are trying to figure out the motive because the woman wasn't robbed. although they say she was beaten here in china town in san francisco. officers say it was between noon and 2:30 p.m. sunday, may 10, mother's day, that afternoon the woman was seen walking here on the city streets and attacked. police say she takes muni from china town and then back and on this day she told her family a woman beat her as she exited a muni bus in china town. >> she was adults by a black female, struck in the head twice. she did get off the bus and there was a good samaritan who

came in contact with the victim and helped her sit down and recover till she walked home. >> reporter: walk home. but then three days later her family found her unconscious and she was taken to the hospital and that is where she remains. police weren't notified till the family called on them this sunday. at this time they do not know what bus line the woman was on. >> the key is we need speak to that good samaritan that helped her off the bus to sit down and recover. he might have witnessed the incident or if there is other witnesses that can narrow down the field of search. >> reporter: the victim's granddaughter posted on facebook my grandma is in a coma, she leaving our family soon. and i ask of your help to come

oakland. the california highway patrol tweeted this picture. the suv was pulled to the side. we are told the car was carrying m 80s which are very powerful fireworks. this is what the suv looked like after the fire was out. not much left. the vehicle was destroyed. it was just the driver in the car. he wasn't hurt. no word on how the fire started. nfl owners could vote on whether to move a team to los angeles. right now three teams are in talks to move to los angeles, the raiders, the chargers and the rams. one of those teams could play home games in an existing stadium during the 2016 season while a new stadium is built. nfl commissioner roger goodel wrapped up the owners meeting in san francisco by saying the league is significantly further on relocation than they have

a single broken bolt in the base of the tower on the bay bridge is raising questions about the other 400 plus bolts. today many test results came back and ktvu's tom vacar is on treasure island. the chief bridge engineer for caltrans had eye opening comments? >> reporter: he did. he is concerned about that one broken bolt but to this degree, the other 400 tell a different story. >> reporter: this is the bolt. one of 421 such bolts in the base of the bay bridge tower

that failed a strength test. it shows the threads are stripped. something that could have weakened the bolt. the bolt shows a fracture which will be examined to determine why it broke. but the testing wept on and on and on. >> let's take every one of the rods that we can, load them up and do an earthquake proof test. and that is what we have done. >> the result, with a dozen rods left to test every one performed as designed to with stand the highest earthquake expected. >> this is really, really, really good news. >> the bridge is so over built with 100-400 bolts providing additional redundant safety margin. >> it is not a concern. >> now what is not so cut and dry is why there is water in

some of the documents seized during the 2011 raid of osama bin laden's compound are now coming to light. they include a job application for terrorist candidates and some of the questions include do you wish to execute a suicide operation, what objectives would you like to accomplish, also what views do you, your family and others have about jihad and who should we contact in case you become a martyr. 100 documents and videos were taken. most are in osama bin laden's own words. it is the largest penalty of its kind in u.s. history and it comes after the largest

to their doctor's appointments. a story 2 investigates has been working on for a month now. eric rasmussen is in the news room with what he found out. >> reporter: talking about a company that billed medi-cal and taxpayers for millions of dollars. 2 investigates started looking into medextress when we heard about the cheyenne phillips -- medexpress when we heard about the california highway patrol pulling them over. they insist all vans are now insured but that is not the only problem. we recorded vans with expired registration, body damage and a missing headlight and one van with no license plates at all. a driver said he was hit from behind by driver last year. they could find no evidence the company or the driver was insured and now she stuck with

getting back to normal. yesterday more than 30,000 people were evacuated after unexploded world war ii bomb was discovered. 550-pound was un-earthed under a former school building. no one was hurt. unexploded bombs are found relatively often. a second marine died from injuries during a training exercise in hawaii. the helicopter went down on sunday with 21 members on

unions, they declined to contact. a new poll is out on who is leading in the race if barbara boxer's u.s. senate seat. a poll asked voters who was their first choice. california attorney general kamala harris came in with 20%. democratic congress woman loretta sanchez 8%. rocky chavez 6%. and tom had 5%. kamala harris had been considered the frontrunner and raised $2 million and received several endorsement. no candidates have done much campaigning. the california highway patrol hosted a memorphial today to -- memorial today to honor officer whose died in the line of duty -- officers who died in the line of duty.

sea creatures end up dying. scientists tell us this appears to be linked to climate change and it could have dasterous effects for -- disastrous effects for fishing. ktvu's john fowler has more. >> reporter: something weird is happening in ocean just off our coast. heading 20 miles off shore -- >> we are about a third of the mile. >> out here albatross are john and curious sea lions frolic in one of the most healthy habitats off our coast. now it is suddenly threatened by low oxygen water, some call dead zones. >> that is had concern.

fish and animals that suffer. >> reporter: he says this is the fear. this dead zone occurred off the oregon coast, and this threat could easily expand to bay area commercial sport fishing zones. >> outside of golden gate can then go into san francisco bay. >> reporter: researchers say to unravel the mystery they are using censor rays to find out what is going on underneath the waves. lowered by cable, testing the water, service to bottom, preliminary results, this water has half the normal oxygen. very far off shore and deep ocean water has a dead layer with less than a quarter normal oxygen but now it is welling up closer to shore and the

surface. research revealed a profile that suggest a developing deadline. >> if we continue a see that throughout the year, but hard to say at this point. something we will keep an eye out. >> reporter: scientists are confident it is climate change that causes the low oxygen levels. and just as if you were to climb to the top of the mountain, scritchers are finding it difficult -- sea creatures are finding it difficult oo breathe. >> -- to breathe. and keep learning about the threat. she and her team set out sensors to discover where dead zones occur and how long they last. sensors are to collect data over four months and reveal the magnitude of the new threat to our ocean. john fowler, ktvu fox 2 news.

the victim in her 70s. her family says she is now in a coma and may never wake up. ktvu's mike mibach with who investigators are looking for for information about the attack. >> reporter: that assault happened middle of the afternoon in china town and investigators indeed are not only looking for the attacker but looking for a good samaritan who dime the help of -- came to the help of the woman. >> reporter: on sunday, may 10, mother's day, this woman just exited a muni bus and was attacked. >> she was assaulted by black female. struck in the head twice. she did get off the bus and there was a good samaritan who came in contact with the victim and helped her sit down and recover at the scene till she walked home. >> reporter: police say three days later the family found her unconscious and she was taken to the hospital where she remains tonight.
