been made in the case but tonight students say more needs to be done to keep them safe. new at 6:00 p.m. ktvu's john sasaki joins us now in the news room. the person leading the effort is a 10th grader? >> reporter: she lost a lifelong friend when he was shot to death last week and now she is trying to make their school safer for everyone. >> reporter: we caught up with her during launch time at the park across from the school. >> we need safer schools. >> reporter: a sophomore where they don't feel safe. they say there are weapons on campus and one riot earlier this year. >> that was before max's death. there was a lot of riots. i went straight to class. >> police told me the high school is safe. >> reporter: [ inaudible question ] >> that's correct. you know, i guess we would have to define riot.

>> reporter: this week they picketed outside the school to call attention to their safety concerns and she spoke to the school board addressing the superintendent. >> i said you can't keep us safe. that is clear. you aren't being responsible for the fact you are not keeping us safe and you are not tulling our -- telling our parents the truth. >> reporter: this came a week after he was killed. >> reporter: he was shot to deathoon trail just be-- death on a trail just below campus. . >> he was really loved. >> reporter: there has been a candlelight vigil every night since the killing. some of the people have even slept here at night to protect it. one of his friends tell me he was robbed by the killer. >> he has been charged with armed robbery. and apparently the probry

occurred -- robbery occurred the day before. >> reporter: school officials directed me to the district and calls were not returned. >> john sasaki, thank you. in campbell police arrested a homeless man in connection with the attempted kidnapping of a young girl saturday. there was a resemblance between roberto felipe-velasco and a sketch that was released. saturday morning police say surveillance video captured a man driving around the neighborhood. police say he grabbed the girl but she fought back and he let her go. roberto felipe-velasco is 25- years-old. he was arrested last night thanks to an officer who noticed his car. >> one of our officers was driving and saw a vehicle matching the description in the extra space storage lot. we found clothes consistent with what he was wearing. >> roberto felipe-velasco was booked on kidnapping, false imprisonment and child

endangerment charges. he is being held without bail. the family of a 10-year-old boy is taking action against santa clara county. they said leaders should done more to protect the child from a camp counselor from molestation. ktvu's ann rubin is live with more. >> reporter: the claim is the precursor to a lawsuit. it alleges the board and office of education were reckless, didn't follow rules and as a result caused harm to a young boy. the 10-year-old said he was sexually abused by the man who worked that science camp. the boy told his parents that he would come into his cabin and take boys for walks in the woods. attorneys say he should never have been alone with the children. it violated rules. the parents are angry and devastated and they hold it

county responsible. the son is now scared, different from the child he was before he went to camp. attorneys think there may be other victims out there. a second family already come forward. >> what is disturbing is that the children were actually encouraged to go see him when they were sick or home sick or felt sad at night. and they were alone with this pedophile. >> reporter: a spokesman for the office of education said they received the complaint but can't comment on pending litigation. they are conducting their own investigation. >> thank you. in baltimore, new developments in the death of freddie gray. a grand jury today indicted all six officers charged in the case. there are similar to the charges the prosecutor announced. most of the serious charges

stand including the second degree murder charge. some of the lesser offenses changed. >> as our investigation continued additional information has been discovered and as is often the case during an ongoing investigation charges can and should be revised based upon the evidence. >> freddie gray died after being transported in a police van after he was arrested. they said he was placed head first into a van and his pleas for medical attention were ignored. arraignment for the officers is set for july. new developments tonight involving the oil and gas company that owns and operates the pipeline that broke in santa barbara. the times looked at the last 10 years and found the company has one of the worse records when it comes to accidents. 346 gasia mikaelian -- ktvu's gasia mikaelian is here with

more. >> looking at 1700 pipeline operators only four had more infractions than plains all american pipeline. the company reported its safety since 2006. infractions include pump failure, corrosion and operator error. none of the incidents caused injuries here but they could cost $23 million in property damage and 700,000 of hazardous liquid. the most recent break spilled 23,000 gallons into the ocean. [ audio difficulties ] >> the coast guard says so far it cleaned up 8,000 gallons and deployed a large boom to keep it from spreading. on land crews excavated 400 yards of soil last night and

more this morning. crews are asking everyone to stay away from the beaches this weekend. they say they understand the inconvenience this causes but the crude in the water could be dangerous to your health. >> many of us responding here work, live and play in southern california and i understand the desire help but i must stress even the volunteers must be trained and wearing proper protective equipment. >> reporter: the department of fish and wildlife is caring for five pelicans that were found coated in oil and they have seen dead lobsterssters and sea bass. today a spokesman said priority is a core value. they will be on the scene till all of the oil is cleaned up. >> hard to look at all the miles of coast lines spilled in oil. governor jerry brown said multiple agents are working hard to clean up all of the

oil. >> we are working with the coast guard and environmental protection agency, conversation corps, fish and game, volunteers, pulling together to clean up the oil spill just as fast as they can. >> the spill one of a wide range of topics the governor covered at a speech in san francisco today. othertomics include -- other topics included health, education and the drought. silicon valley is planning a fundraiser for the survivors of the two earthquakes in nepal. thousands of people lost their homes and are depending -- homes and are depending on help. they are holding a benefit for the red cross tomorrow night and organizers say 100% of the money collected will go to the

red cross nepal earthquake relief fund. home prices hit a high last month. the median sales price for single family homes in california hit $405,000 in april. that is just shy of the $414,000 high in 2007 right before the housing melt down. the median sales price for homes in the bay area is higher, $657,000 last month. and in san francisco, the median sales price was $1.1 million. like pacifica did this week, they decided to tie a rope to it and it was dragged to 30 miles off shore. they say the whale was left with the wind, tides and currents where it will not send it back towards shore. former san francisco police officer who testified in a corruption trial was given a one year prison sentence. reynaldo vargas was charge with stealing during police raids. he testified against two officers, ian furminger and edmond robles. they face the same charges and were sentenced to three years. today reynaldo vargas acknowledged his guilt and said in order to move forward he needs to admit what he has done. new at 6:00 p.m. a accomplishment at san francisco airport. a tower built to be clearer, more accurate and safer. and construction is now complete on the new sfo control tower. ktvu's tom vacar got a look

inside. >> reporter: san francisco airport previewed its new control tower today. construction that began two years ago is now complete. rising 221 feet from the ground. soon this tower will guide air ships to the city by the bay. >> we knew there was atirement create a new facility but we wanted an iconic land mark. . >> reporter: it will allow controllers to see more of the field. >> they build buildings and hangers and they can impede on the line of sight. raising the tower is important to get up over the buildings. >> the federal aviation administration will need a year or so to equip the tower with

air safety technologies. including new ground radars and sates censors, critical for fog, low visibility and night time operations. when done it will be replace the 34-year-old tower that sits on a risky foundation built 61 years ago. >> there was safety requirement to build a new structure that met all the new seismic requirements. >> reporter: this is a critical life line operation. that means it can with stand an 8.0 earthquake and still remain in operation. >> airports are absolutely critical in case of a disaster. bringing the people in that we need to help with relief, bringing supplies. >> reporter: when it goes online it will join the new oakland airport tower which opened 18 months ago and new tows for reno and las vegas -- towers for reno and las vegas are underway.

tom vacar, ktvu fox 2 news. . a planned road closure has been postponed for a couple weeks. doyle drive was supposed to throws thursday -- close thursday. during that planned weekend closure crews were supposed to finalize roadway connections and transfer traffic to the new permanent road. it will now take place june 11. and this is a live picture of traffic on the san mateo bridge and tomorrow night this picture is not going to look like this. there will be no vehicles on the bridge after 10:00 p.m. caltrans will a do more work on -- will do more work on the bridge deck. this weekend they plan to close it again from friday night to 5:00 a.m. monday memorial day. drivers can expect delays on other routes and bridges. cool and gray around the
