another earthquake hits the napa valley. >> and it's going to be a busy weekend on bay area roadways. we will talk about the challenges some drivers could face in the east bay and along the peninsula. mornings on 2 continues. good morning to you thank you for waking up with us it is friday, may 22nd i'm claudine wong. >> and i'm dave clark. it's not as cold this morning. >> it is not. the water temps have come up. so it's still cool inland. i know you both want it a little warmer. >> a little bit. so thank you. order received. order delivered. >> you are tough claudine. we do have a lot of low clouds. it does look a little better

today. a little warmer. the low cloud deck probably maxed itself out yesterday. not as many hardly any reports of drizzle. doesn't mean we won't get a little bit. you can see some low clouds. jim miller writes me on twitter and says good morning steve. good morning, jim. have you heard of a phenomenon known as a moon bow? have you seen one? yes, and yes. this is not as common. instead of direct sunlight giving us a rainbow interacting with clouds. you get a fainter rainbow with light reflecting from the surface of the moon. it happens. it's called a lunar rainbow. very good question jim, thank you. send them my way i will do my best to answer them. [ applause ] i will not be here all week. [ laughter ] cloud cover off the sierra nevada there will be thundershowers up in the

sierra. keep that in mind there will be another low dropping in on the sun for them. for us this scoots through. it will keep us cool but the lows are very mild. mid 50s to upper 50s. the low cloud deck it looks like it will boon off a little sooner. there is still a lot there. the wind will pick up again. a little breeze at times. not much drizzle yet. 60s to low and mid 70s. all right sal, good morning. good morning, steve. we have decent news when it comes to the is traffic. on the friday before memorial day or the friday before labor day, you can see the traffic is going to be lighter on this friday. 17 minutes. that is about the time it takes when there is no slow traffic on the span. and it does look pretty good. when you get to the toll plaza, this is really telling. it is light. usually at 6:00 we already have

a big backup. i'm not even sure the metering lights are on. i can click here while i'm talking and check that. it doesn't matter because it's so light as you drive through. the traffic continues. no, they are not. the metering lights are not on. it's very, very light coming into san francisco. look at highway 4. normally we have a lot of slow traffic on highway 4 but the road sensors are showing us green. all showing us green in livermore too. so far we can say it's friday light. it's 6:03 let's go back to the desk. in the news this morning a woman was hit and killed in san jose yesterday as she was sitting in traffic. this happened in rock port avenue. three people were sitting in a car when another car hit them from behind. a 40-year-old woman was rushed to the hospital. another person in the car suffered very severe injuries. at this point police don't think alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.

the u.s. geological survey in men low park say -- in menlo park says a light earthquake shook the area. ktvu fox 2 tara moriarty is live from the napa valley this morning. i started getting facebook messages as soon as that shaking started with people going oh here we go again. >> reporter: that always happens. everybody likes to talk about where they were when the earthquake happened. we've got a lot of comments on our facebook page over 200 people commenting about having a really good sense of humor. this was the largest earthquake to hit since the really big one we had over this summer last august. that was a 6.0. we do know this particular quake was not centered on the same fault line as that quake. but it could have been triggered by it according to geologists. a lot of people that live here say they did feel light to moderate shaking for about 20 seconds and there were no reports of injuries or serious damage. many people say they were out

at restaurants dining or watching the warriors game. >> i was talking with a couple customers when we felt the earthquake. i asked them if they fell and they said yes they felt it but they didn't think it was an earthquake. they thought i moved their table. >> reporter: people wrote on the usgs website they felt the quake throughout the north bay including santa rosa and petaluma all the way down to san francisco and the peninsula and parts of the east bay all the way to sacramento valley. live from napa i'm tara moriarty. a magnitude 7.8 quake in april followed by a 7.3 earthquake this month has killed more than 8300 people in nepal and damaged 800,000 homes. city leaders and activists will hold a fundraiser at 7:00 tonight in san jose with all

the proceeds going to the red cross to aid those quake victims. it's timed that 3.5 million people in nepal need food and other supplies. the operator of that ruptured oil pipeline says it could take months to figure out what caused that pipe to break. and neither are -- six pelicans and a young sea lion were among those rescued yesterday. >> the general public may want to help but the fact is that trying to capture wild animals by people that don't have the training is dangerous to the animal and the people. >> those boats have skimmed 9500 gallons of oily water from the ocean so far. two of the beaches would normally be packed during the

memorial day holiday they will stay closed because of this oil spill. the investigation into the cause of the leak it will take some time. the crews need to excavate the broken pipeline and then they have to inspect the leak. getting around the bay area could be a challenge this memorial day weekend. a bridge closure and bart shut down will delay. i had to say the last time they shut down the bridge was mothers day weekend. i have folks saying it's a terrible weekend to do it. >> i think the thinks here is a lot of people are leaving town but for those stick around here, it will be difficult to get around the bay area. you will notice extra traffic and that is because the san mateo bridge where we are this morning will be closed for repaving work starting at 10:00 tonight all the way through

monday at 5:00 a.m.. so keep this in mind. drivers will be detoured around this closure. the bridge shut down a couple months ago. and it was a mess. especially on the bay bridge. on saturday and sunday there will be no service from the fruitvale to the coliseum stations. they will have a free bus bridge to carry riders between those two riders. if you're trying to get boom san francisco on saturday you will have to transfer over to a dublin daly city train in the

east bay. and of course drive not necessarily a great option either because you will have quite a bit of traffic on the freeways because of the san mateo bridge being shut down. >> sounds like we should stay home and barbecue. [ laughter ] s warriors won last night. now they have a 2-0 lead after a nail biting victory. and that shot gave the warriors a lead for good toward the end of the third quarter. the warriors led by as many as 1 but the rockets they fought back. tied the game before halftime but thanks to a 9-2 run the warriors took control again and then it came down to this. a smothering defensive stop in

the final seconds. it's over. the warriors won 99-98. >> at that point it's just don't let him get a shot off and try to be the hero. we were able to get it done and the key for us going into the next game is to protect our leads. >> it's frustrating. frustrating to give the game away like that. my teammates and coaches were behind me. saying we are going home to secure home now. >> got to give it to james harden he played a great game. but steph curry had 33 points, seven assists led the warriors. game three tomorrow night at the toyota center in houston starts at 6:00 p.m. our time. game four also in houston at 6:00 p.m. on monday. happening today for the first time ever san francisco state students will graduate at at & t park. the school decided to move the

graduation there to accommodate more students and staff and family members. napa county animal shelter has found a high-tech way to find and identify lost dogs. the shelter says it's the first in northern california. so if the dog is ever lost its record will be in the system and if found kit be quickly identified. according to its website, finding rover has helped find 7 million dogs. >> finding rover. i lost my dog over the weekend. i got her back. it's being called one of the bay area's newest landmarks. coming up at 6:30 we'll give you a sneak peek at san francisco airports state of the art control tower and the new technology that will keep

today the chp will release its results into the crash north of sacramento that killed ten people including five high school students. this happened in april of 2014 about 100 miles north of sacramento. a fedex tractor trailer sped across the highway. three chaperons and the drivers of both the bus and fedex truck were killed. a redwood city window washing company has been fined because of a near fatal accident until november. pedro perez was moving equipment on the roof when he fell 11 stories and landed on a moving car. he survived that fall but his family says he suffered severe

brain trauma. police in washington, d.c. made an arrest in that brutal murder and arson case that led investigators on a multistate man hunt. the suspect was 34-year-old darren dillon went. a former marine and excon. he's accused of killing a prominent family that lived in the same neighborhood as joe biden. police say they found his dna on a piece of pizza. time is 6:16. let's head out to sal. how are things look something >> things are doing very well. we are looking at a commute that is uncharacteristic. even for a friday. i think what is going on people are leaving early for the memorial day weekend. look at look at the bay bridge

toll plaza. even on fridays it's not that light. the traffic is going to be moving along pretty well on the bridge itself. this is a look at the commute here now on interstate 880 and the traffic looks good here. i do want to mention though we do have a trouble spot and that would be in fremont. southbound 880 at thornton avenue. there is a crash there. they have just called the fire department. there is a little bit of slow traffic on southbound 880 approaching thornton. so it will catch your attention because the rest of the commute looks so good and then you see slow traffic as you approach thornton. after that it gets better again heading into san jose. 6:17 let's go to steve in the weather center. it's a little quiet an twitter an facebook. although we do have some good questions coming in. we have low clouds around. some high clouds.

it looks a little bit warmer over the weekend. i will tell you big ridge of high pressure in the east they will have 80s and 90s throughout much of the east this weekend and into early next week. i think our pattern at least some component of it lasts into early june. i really do. matt said hay steve. we have another .01 of drizzle and rain. rained pretty good at times. there was a lot more drizzle yesterday. we will go 64 for a high. the water temps are coming up. inland temps still favoring below normal on the temps. 66 nor a high. same as yesterday.

the low clouds are making a pretty good push. there will be rain up in the sierra again. 57 livermore. 55 san jose. 55 concord. redwood city 56. there is still a westerly come pent. the water temps are coming up which is why the coastal temps have been coming up. still very active throughout much of the west. 40s in the mountains. it's cooler for the interior locations but again because of the warm temps that is why we are waring to see a little bit warmer conditions over by the coast. low clouds. high -- they should be closer

you've been listening. >> smidge is a meet logical term. >> yes, it is. there will be more thundershower and activity. there will be more up in the mountain. keep that in mind if you're heading up there at least on friday and saturday. sunday could be a little more breezy. there is another low that drops in from the north. 50s on the temps. low clouds are in place but it looks like weak high pressure is starting to build in. maybe a little drizzle but nothing compared to yesterday. 60s by the coast and bay.

70s inland. i like the look of traffic lights. you can see traffic is moving along very nicely and you know along -- [ inaudible ] traffic is moving well westbound coming into san francisco. >> all right we're having a little trouble hearing you. we'll try to fix those audio problems and we'll check back in with you in a bit. ktvu social media accounts were packed with people describing the ground shaking when the magnitude 4.1 hit the wine country. and tara moriarty is live for us in the napa valley this morning where last nights quake was a little reminder of the more destructive one we had last year. >> reporter: and even this morning we've had two little quakes just under a 2.0. this is after last nights 4.0. this has really been the largest quake we've had since

that very destructive 6.0 last summer. we know this quake was not on the same fault line as that quake the one we had last august but it still gave people a little bit of a shake. they felt light to moderate shaking that lasted 20 seconds. there were no report of injuries or serious damage. many say they were out at restaurants dining or watching the warriors game. residents and tourists alike. >> we had just spoken about it which was ironic. i said the last the big earthquake we had it really did damage to this hotel. >> reporter: people wrote on the usgs website they felt the quake throughout the north bay including santa rosa and petaluma. as well as parts of the east bay and all the way to sacramento valley we spoke to one man this morning he was from sacramento he said he didn't feel it at all. but some people we know in benicia and other parts out there did.

all right live from napa i'm tara moriarty, back to you. >> thanks so much tara. relief in the south bay. a man suspected o of trying to kidnap a young girl is now in jail. police in campbell arrested 25- year-old roberto felipe velasco on thursday. the key to his arrest was finding the silver honda accord captured on surveillance video. making a-turn in the victim -- making a u-turn in the victim's neighborhood. >> we believe he was living in in the car but it also was apparent that he had much of his belongings in the storage unit. >> and inside that storage unit investigators say they found clothing matching the victims description of what the suspect

wore. he being held without bail in the santa clara county main jail. one week after the shooting death of 17-year-old student the students are pushing the district for more security. this follows the death of 17- year-old max rusk. he was shot and killed just off campus. his close friend katelyn dart and her friends picketed outside the schools yesterday. she tells us she also went to the school board. >> i said you can't keep us safe that is is pretty clear. you are not being responsible for the fact that you are not keeping us safe. >> vallejo police tell us that the high school is secure. our calls to the district were not returned. home prices in silicon valley setting new records and that is making it even harder for people who are looking for a place to live. janine de la vega is joining us

live. good morning j mean. we are here in the park area of san jose. this is a desirable place to live. but there is not a lot of homes for sale here. about 35 or so in this little geographic area. and so that is what is driving the prices up but at this time they have gone way up. here are the latest numbers from the real estate information service core logic. in san mateo county the medium price of a home in april reached an all-time high. it's almost $1.2 million. a record was set in santa clara county. the medium price tag is $105,000. and alameda county it rose as well. and in contra costa county the medium home price went up to $490 how long. very good market to sell because prices are going up. for buyers it's becoming more of a challenge. they want to buy before the interest rates go up.

what is difficult is the bidding wars that are happening. that is a trend we are seeing for awhile. people are offering $20,000 $30,000 and $50,000. we spoke to one who watched her friends go through the process. >> they kept getting out bid so they were finding it really hard to get a house within their price range they wanted in the area they wanted. so now they had to move out of the area they were looking at in order top get the house that -- in order to get the house that they wanted. >> reporter: and realtors say they are still seeing people put down all cash offers. not everybody can do that. coming up at 7:00, you will hear from a local realtor and get his perspective on what is going on. formers who use water from the delta are not sure if the state will agree to give up a

quarter of their water this year in exchange for making deeper cuts. farmers along the sacramento, san joaquin delta made the offer. they offered to either take less water for irrigation or leave a quarter of their crops unplanted. and the drought is creating another problem for californians. large infestations of roaches. exterm nay sars say -- those roaches are now looking for water and a place to cool off. so they are going into people's homes through cracks in the walls and corners. >> and my garage is the biggest part. due to the fact that there are cracks and crannies in there. that is where you will get most of your bugs. >> pest control companies are reporting a surge in business.

roaches are also hiding out under landscape tarps and flower beds. support is growing for a terror last electric's. her ever -- and the name of a student who police say committed suicide. school officials told her to change that shirt saying it was glorifying suicide. but she refused to do it. >> i said no. they said i don't think you understand. i said i understand, i can't do that. they said okay you will have to call your parents and have them pick you up. >> instead she called her mother to come pick her up and posted about what happened on twitter. some other students have been posting messages of support for her. they are cig everyone should be -- they say everyone should be allowed to mourn in their own way. we are getting a close up look at san francisco's new

state of the art control tower. now construction has been completed but it's not operating yet. faa will need another year or so to equip the tower with the new air safety technology. it's 40 feet higher. it allows the controllers to see a lot more of the airfield and built to withstand 8.2 magnitude quake. >> there was a safety requirement to build a new structure that met all the requirements. >> airports are absolutely critical in the case of a disaster. whether it's bringing the people in we need to help with relief. whether it's bringing supplies. >> san francisco's new airport tower is expected to go online in august of 2016. trouble getting to the bottom of what caused an oil pipeline to rupture along the santa barbara coastline. we'll tell you why and the reason people volunteering to help with the beach cleanup are

being turned away. >> plus getting around the bay area this memorial day weekend. it will be a tough task. >> good morning. we are looking at the east bay commute and we like what we see for the most part. look at 880. it looks very good. most of the traffic has been good but we do have a problem in fremont. >> low clouds. high and mid level clouds. and temperatures rebounding a little bit on the coast but inland they are staying cool. we'll have your weekend forecast coming up.

welcome back to mornings on 2. just a reminder it will be harder than usual to get around parts of the bay area this memorial day weekend. ktvu fox 2 alex savidge is joining us live at the san mateo bridge with more on it being closed down and also a bart shut down that will lead to delays as well. good morning, alex. >> reporter: a lot of trouble here. if you're sticking around this memorial day weekend here in town, be aware the freeways especially will be quite busy. that is because the san mateo bridge where we are it will be closed for repaving work starting at 10:00 tonight all the way through 5:00 a.m. on monday morning. drivers will have to be detoured all the way around this closure and that will lead to serious backups on other freeways in the area. the san mateo bridge was shut

down a couple weeks ago for similar construction working traffic was really just a mess. especially over on the bay bridge. along san mateo bridge being shut down l are major bart closure. on saturday and sunday there will be no service from the fruitvale to coliseum stations. instead a bus bridge will be carrying riders between those two locations. . bart wants people to know they are closing the free monday to daly city line for the entire day on saturday as well. so that means the passengers heading over into san francisco will need to transfer to a dublin daly city train in the east bay. and because of those two closures, it will take a lot longer than usual to get where you need to go. bart doesn't seem to be a great option to get into san francisco. the freeways will be extra busy bust because of the closure

here. not really any good choices. >> we've been warned. all right alex savidge talk to you later. law enforcement agencies will be out this memorial day weekend looking for drunk drivers starting tonight at 6:00 through midnight on monday more officers will be on the roads making sure you stay safe. last year 25 people were killed in california. seven were not wearing seat belts. millions of people are expected to hit the roads. prices are up $0.27s in the past month. the national average is $0.91 less.

because of an earlier crash that was blocking lanes. southbound interstate 880 in free monday. we've had some improvement. the accident was near dakota road. you can see the traffic at the san mateo bridge looks good. as they come road work on the bridge. no major issues on that bridge. if you're driving to the bay bridge toll plaza it is light. there is is a little bit of a backup in some of those middle lanes. look at the dark skies. perfect time for me to bring steve in here. can i make a request for
