the last few cars crossing the san mateo bridge tonight ahead of a closure right now that will last until monday morning. good evening i'm julie haener. >> and i'm frank somerville.
10:01 pm
for the second time this month caltrans is closing the san mateo bridge as it works to resurface the roadway for the first time since the bridge opened. and this time obviously the closure is on a holiday weekend. jana katsuyama is live at the toll road where the closure just went into effect. >> reporter: it just did, frank. and as you see there's a few cars that are going by here and these seem to be the last ones. apparently the chp has positioned themselves at the ramps at each location. they are making their way up to the main structure where most of the work will begin. there have been tonight big digital signs posted to warn drivers about this closure. it goes from 10:00 tonight through 5:00 monday morning. now caltrans crews say they

will be completing the resurfacing project that started on mother's day weekend. >> the bridge is 50 years old, it's over 50 years old from 1967 just like anything else with time the surface is worn out. so we need to do a new resurfacing and we expect this resurfacing to last 50 years if not longer. >> reporter: the san mateo bridge shut down two weeks ago caused major traffic. an average of 86,000 cars cross the bridge on the weekend. obviously that sent a lot of the traffic on to the other area bridges and highways. we did talk to people tonight who said it will be tough getting to work this weekend. >> i guess it's not that good because you're going to waste more gas, more time. and more traffic. >> more gasoline costs more money. that's why i don't like it but i don't know. >> reporter: and back here live, you can see that they

have put the closed signs on all lanes of the san m ateo bridge toll plaza. we're told this entire project is expected to cost $39 million. again it's going to be going on through the entire weekend. i asked the bridge people if there were any other alternatives to this. and they told me that if they had done this resurfacing lane by lane it would have taken them a year or longer to get this project completed. so they're hoping to have it all done by 5:00 a.m. monday if not earlier. >> yeah better to get it all done at once. jana katsuyama on the san mateo bridge tonight that is completely shut down at this hour. this is what the bay bridge looks like at this hour. you can see the traffic is moving on the bay bridge. the impact on the bay bridge this weekend may not be quite as bad because more people will be out of town for the holiday weekend. now another holiday weekend closure to tell you about. this one involves b.a.r.t.

gratifying to see seat belts the rule. >> but there's still a few that are stubborn or young kids that feel they don't need to air them. >> reporter: this ad airing depicts young drivers who may shrug off seat belts and makes the point. when you're restrained you're not thrown. that's often the difference between death and life. >> i will be the first one to tell them. if you didn't have your seat belt on this could have been a lot worse. >> reporter: it's a challenge spotting violators. looking for the dangling buckle or no sign of a strap across the chest. even more difficult after dark and that's when people tend to skip seat belts most. men are more likely than women to go without but the excuses are universal. >> the excue may be that it bothers them. >> it's uncomfortable. >> reporter: they were only a

what could you possibly feel good about doing something like that? >> reporter: despite the tremendous loss of water the water authorities tell ktvu they don't think it's going to have an impact on residents in newark and the area. they say the dam was old they were planning to replace it. they will just have to accelerate the process. the price tag for the new dam, $3 million. and the recreation area around care -- quarry lakes will be closed to swimmers. swimming is prohibited at least through may 27th pending the outcome of water quality tests. an oil production platform in the gulf of mexico caught
