time of year and they still need volunteers for tomorrow's holiday. claudine has more on how people can volunteer their time. >> we're joined by carl robleard who is with st. anthony's, thank you for joining us. >> it's good to be here. >> i was in the dining room talking to some of the folks. i think we were very surprised to hear that memorial day is actually the busiest day. why is that? >> it's probably one of the really well kept secrets. often people think of thanksgiving, christmas. always feel we're working the oscars, that time of year. everybody wants to be there. it's wonderful. people are naturally thinking of those in need, want to express that generosity. the catch 22 is that actually the holidays like memorial day, july 4th are some of the hardest times to really get folks to think about s. st. anthony's and coming in who help out. >> are they out of town? or just not thinking about it? >> it's a perfect storm, yes. theact exactly. most peeve -- people are thinking beach barbecue, beginning of summer.
8:46 am
it's naturally the way we think. for st. anthony's the three big factors, it's the end of the month, folks on a fixed income, pretty much out of money, our numbers always go up. then you have this holiday where folks are not necessarily tuned in to thinking about those in need. so you have this perfect storm. >> we took this video earlier this week. the other surprise is that one in five, those folks are veterans that you're serving. so people are thinking about memorial day. we honor those who lost their lives serving this country but if they are also looking at a way to honor veterans in general. serving those who have served is a good way to do that. >> that's right. you get to talk to really interesting, very thoughtful folks, basically one in five meals we serve on any day but a day like memorial day is to a veteran. so memorial day honors those who have died in the line of duty and that is an incredibly important holiday. at st. anthony's we want to honor those still living and struggling. we think that's are thele reality and it's something we're aware of everyday.
8:47 am
we want other folks to be aware of it. many veterans in san francisco are still struggling to meet the very basic needs. >> 2,500 meals on a regular day. 3,500 meals expected to be served tomorrow? >> i checked in with our chefs, they are preparing for over 4,000. i asked them to look back at the numbers from last year. it was 4,200 meals. that was by far the single busiest day of the entire year last year. >> so if people are watching and saying that's it, i'm coming down, do you have to sign up in advance? or just show up? and say put me to work? >> probably the former. showing up can be a little tricky for us, as much as people don't realize, there's so much planning that goes into each day and each meal. especially a big meal. the best thing get on the web site. thank you to your wonderful story we did fill up for yesterday. >> ok. >> a lot of -- people have been hearing that all weekend and they are signing up. >> amazing. >> we would want -- ideally between 80 and 100 people to
