and later on a stretcher taken into a ambulance. sky fox 2 was over head as the second hostage ran free to the safety of a police car waiting nearby. then moments after that police took down the gunman and took him away. this started this afternoon with a carjacking and then ended with that arrest at gas station in antioch. we have team coverage tonight beginning with ktvu's rob roth with what a houston told us -- hostage told us. >> we are a block from the station where it went down. the road is closed. investigators are still here because it is a crime scene. there was a sense of relief when word went out the gunman surrendered to police and no one was hurt. >> reporter: the second and final hostage told us he was okay as paramedics wheeled him

to a balance. >> reporter: he works at the arco station and for hours he and the owner were held hostage. two witnesses saw a man driving this red car crash. he ran from the car and then saw police fire. then the man headed into the gas station. two employees were inside. police closed off the road and people gathered to watch. >> i was on my way to 7-eleven and i seen it was blocked off. i hoped it would be short but it was bigger than i thought. >> reporter: at 2:30 p.m. we saw man walking out with his hands up. he was the owner of the gas station. >> he is a nice guy. tries to run a smooth operation. >> reporter: an hour later the

man who was holding the employee hostage surrendered to police. the threat was over. the family of the hostage taker waited a black away. >> from this advantage point it was an intense afternoon but it ended without anyone getting hurt. >> rob, do we know anything about the suspect and what led him to surrender? >> reporter: we do not. all i can tell you is we saw family members gathered here throughout the afternoon, they didn't want to speak, they were distraught, upset. but no, we don't know what prompted this. >> rob roth live in antioch. thank you. >> to the police investigation into what led up to the stand off. ktvu's paul chambers joins us now at the police department where officers may be speaking in moments? >> reporter: that's correct. they just wrapped up and they will hold a press conference in a bit and we will bring that to

you live. there were several crimes before the hostage car accident, accidents and carjackings and then the hostage situation. >> reporter: 11:00 a.m. this morning an accident occurred on west 10th street. >> after the accident was reported a male was reported running from the vehicle. and after that a male was carjacked at a nearby business. >> reporter: ors had a hard -- officers had a hard time figuring out which car it was. he drove the vehicle it concord where he stole another vehicle. a. chp helicopter followed the car. >> the suspect fled from the vehicle and attempted to carjack a woman in another vehicle. >> reporter: that was unsuccessful. but before 3ing into the gas station the -- fleeing into the gas station the suspect had a

the bike share program is expanding to the east bay. they voted to approve the expansion this morning. the plan is to increase from 700 to 7,000. new at 5:00 p.m. a start up in oakland wants to reward people who conserve water by paying them and they plan to make money while doing it. ktvu's tom vacar explains how it works. >> we pay people to save water

arrest and we are hearing from one of the hostages as he is wheeled into an ambulance. what he had to say about the gunman. >> reporter: [ inaudible question ] >> nice guy. [ indiscernible ] >> good evening. i am julie haener. >> and i am frank somerville. >> that developing news is in antioch. started hours ago with a carjacking after 11:00 p.m. and ended around 3:30 p.m. this afternoon with an arrest at an arco gas station a mile and a half away. our crews were on the scene as the first hostage was freed. you can see him there. hands up and later brought on to an ambulance. and sky fox 2 was over the scene an hour later as the second hostage ran out to the safety of a police officer. moment later the suspect came out and officers took him down. -- moments later the suspect came out and officers took him down. live team coverage tonight.
