carjacked someone before being the target of gunfire. >> he broke the door. >> that led to the man running into the arco gas station. >> then i told him, look, you have come under my roof. it becomes my responsibility, social responsibility to protect you to the best of my capacity. >> reporter: he and his employee tried to escape when he dozed off. >> 30 seconds he went in a deep sleep. we tried to open the door. couldn't open the door. it was stuck. >> it did end peacefully. police say he was wantedoon warrant out of tracy for -- wanted on a aren't out of tracy. he is -- warrant out of tracy.

he is now facing other charges. bail $1 million. >> john, yesterday when you were talking to him you asked him if it was the worse day of his life, he said it was the best day of his life. >> reporter: since he survived it was the best day. >> john sasaki, thank you. new at 6:00 p.m. rents going up across the bay area. something most people living here already know. now a new report shows how much the rents have gone up. zillow reports the median rent in san francisco is now more than $4,200 a month and that keeps going higher. ktvu's tom vacar with the reason why. >> reporter: if san francisco is the epicenter of high rents the shock waves are spreading. in the central bay area rents are up 15% over last year. >> we see the trend towards

renting. there are lots of studies say that is temporary. >> reporter: for now zillow says high rent san jose is up 13%. san francisco up 15.5%. daly city up 20%. across the bay, oakland up 21.6. emeryville 26%. berkeley up 31%. he manages 600 rental units. >> i say in the last year they have increased because there is lack of vacancy. >> reporter: his offerings reveal renters willing to pay. >> within a week. >> reporter: the residents are well paid techies who want to live close to where they work. >> big increase in employment in the bay area.

registration fee. >> cab drivers have to pay a business tax and uber does not. they are doing the same job we do. >> taxi drivers complained that companies like uber and lyft are hurting their business. anyone who does business in san francisco for 7 days must register and pay the fee. it would also apply to the ride share drivers. they want the city to make sure that happens. the committee approved a bill that would authorize the option of medical aid in dying for terminally ill adults. the end of life option act being debated in sacramento would give adults with six months or less to live the option to request prescription medication that would allow them to die on their own terms. she drew attention to the issue when she moved to oregon last year because they have a death

with dignity law. she had brain cancer and ended her life last november. four other states authorize medical aid in dying, washington, montana, vermont and new mexico -- vermont and new mexico. he was sworn in to office today in sacramento. he won a battle against a fellow democrat. he had the support of business owners. $9million were spent on the special election by the campaigns and groups. opponents accused him of being a republican in democrat's clothing. >> i ran as a democrat, progressive, conservative. trying to find a balance. [ indiscernible ] >> he says he cares about schools and roads but wants to be sure every tax dollar is

spent efficiently. >> reporter: since 1975 the golden state warriors are going to the nba finals, playing lebron james and the cleveland cavaliers. they will shine a spotlight on oakland. ktvu's mike mibach spoke with the mayor about how they plan to make sure everything runs smoothly. >> reporter: warriors fever alive in oakland. >> i love it. >> i hope they do it. >> reporter: everything yellow pops more one day after golden state warriors punched its ticket to the nba finals. >> i was at the game. exciting night. >> the mayor says the city is preparing for a celebration to be held if the warriors win the title. >> i don't want to jinx anything. we are proceeding with great hope but mayor ed lee agrees that the parade should be in oakland. >> game one thursday and game two on a sunday night, officials say that gives

. soon the legislator may make it legal for motorcycles to weave between cars. lane splitting is something you already see. but if it becomes law california would become the first state to allow it. motorcycle riders say that would be a good thing and would make the practice safer. >> i think that there is more

consequence to it now. i am sure they will advertise it, it is legal. that will make people think twice about changing lanes. >> the state assembly approved the law today. right now bikers who navigate around traffic through the middle of lanes are in a gray area in california. although law enforcement permits it, other states ban the practice. the new bill says motorcycles must drive below 50 miles per hour when splitting lanes. one rider said there are two reasons he does it. >> keep your bike cool. most bikes over heat and i know that is a big problem. big thing about being behind cars. you could get rear ended. that is dangerous. >> the motorcyclist association opposes the bill. they are in favor of less strict rules. the bill heads to the senate. the bottle rocket music

festival kicks off at the napa valley expo tomorrow. organizers say they made changes to the festival after listening to the concerns of residents. ktvu's cristina rendon tells us what will be different this year. >> i was supportive of the event. it seemed like a good thing for the town. >> reporter: he has nothing but love for the bottle rocket music festival but he knows some neighbors haven't been happy with the noise, the traffic and the parking. >> people are getting used to the idea. they are doing everything they can to make it better. >> reporter: after the first event in 2013 -- [ indiscernible ] he helped start the neighborhood program where ambassadors walk the streets talking and listening. >> anybody who is here we work with. >> reporter: this neighborhood

is where residents have been vocal. that is why they will make sure concerns are being listened to. >> anyone driving to bottle rocket music festival will be able to apark and walk -- to park and walk to the festival. >> reporter: he says that is a change from last year when shuttle buses were used. >> this year we had our meeting and 10 people showed up. wy received zero complaints and got three -- [ indiscernible ] >> reporter: a few residents have become amburseders and now are a part of the solution. >> music heals. music brings us all together. >> reporter: cristina rendon, ktvu fox 2 news. keeping people safe while traveling to and from the airport was the purpose of a mission today in oakland. officials were screening buses, limos, taxis and ride sharing

vehicles looking for safety violations. making sure vehicle identification numbers check out and insurance and licenses are up to date. >> people, companies may not be aware they are in violation of something. this is a great tool let people know there is something going on. if you are doing it and you are negligent we want to put a stop to that. >> several citations were handed out today. it is all part of the effort to keep drivers and passengers safe. time to check out the weather now. we were talking earlier, about the same, warmer. felt like it was cooler. >> it was like that. started off slow. but then the sun came out, 1:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m. and temperature said warmed. numbers 4, 5 degrees warmer than yesterday. even though it may not have felt like that. morgan hill, 80 degrees today.

that is a big jump. 77 fairfield. antioch 78. santa rosa 76. still cool around the bay. san francisco 59. oakland 65. hayward 63. we are seeing warming. but some cities cooled. there is the fog. it looks cold. the fog, right? it is cold. what i want to point out, see how it is compressing down, there is high pressure up the, pressing -- up there, pressing down. a warmer pattern the next couple days. into the weekend. texas, they are getting hammered. they had tornado warnings, now it is tornado watches. look at the thunderstorms moving through. towards the dallas area. they can't buy a break. they will get a break, sunday and monday, texas will get a break. they have been getting severe severe thunderstorms.

for us, high pressure is back. warm through the bay area weekend. highs tomorrow, 80s. optimistic with the numbers. tomorrow i think with the pattern, with the fog compressing we will get more low 80s. that is it. 90s, central valley. it is there. it will be hot. we had a fire earlier that got put out. fires become a real issue. especially with the lack of rain that we have had. there it is. nice looking five-day forecast. weekend looks nice. saturday is the best day. >> thank you. the contra costa county fair opened today in antioch. the fairgrounds opened for business. new rides and new food, even the family dog can get in on the fun.

someday -- >> someday -- [ talking at the same time ] >> a stanley cup final. you know, the organization has high standards. you don't make the playoffs, you are the coach, you are out. that was the case for the coach. they introduced peter deboer. experienced coach. head coach for 21 straight seasons at one level or another in the nhl. coached with florida, new jersey, took the devils to the stanley cup final in 2012. but they did lose to the kings. he was in the mix the last time san jose had a coaching vacancy. >> the young guy, you come in, think you can coach anyway, i think that serves you well early in your career. i come to appreciate the value
