it's monday, june 1st. i'm tori campbell. >> i'm dave clark. let's check weather and traffic. steve has things to tell you this morning. >> well, light rain or drizzle. >> yeah. >> take your pick. >> yeah. >> there is a lot of it to go around. some of it cloudy. some not getting precip. sausalito and daly city has had .07 to .01. that's more than drizzle. a lot of it is well below the radar beam. cloudy skies and kathy, napa valley@chick, washing our bottlerockaway. very good. low clouds in place. drizzle is being helped along by this system here which is very impressive for june 1st. it's going to keep a lot of gray skies. when you get about .25 of this, that's more than drizzle. 50s on the temps.

the lows are held up by the cloud cover. it's the high temps that will be below average. it looks likes we're just carrying may's pattern into june. no sign of any warmup. in fact, another low moving in for the weekend. fog, drizzle. some sun. foggy, drizzly. 60s and 70s across the board. all right, sal. we're getting a lot of drizzle. the wet roads are in place on this monday morning. it's almost like rain. if you are gonna be out there, give yourself extra time. fatal crash we have in fremont that happened this morning. this is on mission boulevard. it occurred southbound where this car ran into a tree. one person died during an investigation. this happened early this morning but the traffic is still going to be affected here and it looks like they will be stuck or they will be closing at least southbound mission boulevard near sullivan under

pass until at least noon according to fremont police. trying to find out more information. this is one of the things where they will have to do an investigation into the area and obviously the investigation continues. let's take a look at the san mateo bridge. we've had slow traffic there getting out to the high rise. most of it is slow but no major problems. if you are going to the bay bridge toll plaza, it is backed up just as steve said, it's pretty slow as you come into the city because of that wet weather. leaving san francisco, we have a big problem here. earlier we had roadwork eastbound. we still do did eastbound. it wasn't causing a big backup before. now look at the backup. it's like a bad afternoon commute. all the way from 280 to the lower deck of the bay bridge. if you live in san francisco and are trying to get to oakland, you might consider using the san mateo bridge going the long way around or getting yourself on the bridge avoiding 101 and that means

going south of market perhaps using second street onramp something like that. that will be a time saver for you. back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. police in the south bay have caught a group of thieves targeting people who are working out in gyms. janine de la vega joins us live from san jose to tell us how they are operating and why this is still an open investigation. what are people saying? >> reporter: i've spoken to several people who have been coming here to the ymca and they are familiar with the burglaries. it's causing them to be more cautious. they are not bringing their valuables inside. the mercury news is reporting so far police have arrested three men they believe are responsible for a rash of auto burglars. many of them at various gyms in south and north san jose. according to the paper, one of them -- one of the thieves distracted a front desk

employee while the other went to the restroom. moments later, a vehicle was reported stolen. the task force noticed a pattern of theft and noticed the thieves were stealing car gees from the locker rooms. >> my son's van was vandalized and they took his wallet, his cell phone. >> what was it like? >> they broke his window. there was glass everywhere. it's happened many times in this parking lot early morning. >> reporter: the mercury news is reporting police were able to identify the suspects through surveillance video and track them down. five cars have been recovered. police say they've arrested three men and they are reportedly transients. the suspects are looking for more suspects in the ring. we're waiting to hear back from police as well as the ymca to get more details on this case. tori? >> all right, janine de la vega, live for us this morning. thank you.

7:05. also in san jose, a very tense standoff with a man and a woman that police say tried to run over a police officer finally ended overnight with the two suspects arrested. it started when police tried to pull over the man and woman on mclaughlin and story road at 6:30 yesterday evening. the suspects police chase -- the police chased them and then the couple rammed into a patrol car and several parked cars. the suspects abandoned their car near tully road and ran off. just before 10:00 last night, the suspects were found hiding in a backyard. they were arrested on assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer. they were also warranted on felony warrants. a memorial continues to grow for a 6-year-old girl whose burned body was found 90 miles from her home in

sacramento. a member has been set up at the arco gas station next to her home. the child disappeared from her home on thursday and then on friday, her body was found in a burning field. but police still don't know how she died. her mother's boyfriend 25-year- old juan rivera was arrested and charged with the murder. police say he's the only suspect. he's due to be formally charged in court tomorrow. a 9-year-old girl is being treated for critical injuries after being hit by an out-of- control car. it happened at los angeles airport. she was stand iting on a sidewalk outside of a terminal when a car suddenly veered across traffic and jumped the curb yesterday afternoon. the 67-year-old man who was driving and his passenger, they were hurt, too. but their injuries are not as serious. investigators think he stepped on the gas instead of the brakes. the driver also smashed into a wall leaving a gaping hole in

the side of the building. new limitations take effect for laubs and other landscape -- lawns and other landscaping starting today and new restrictions for housing developments on june 15th are coming in. there was a vote to change development rules on friday. they set a maximum amount of water to maintain new lawns. it's up to developers to figure out how to meet the limits and local government agencies to enforce them. developers can reduce water use by planting shrubs and bushes or by replacing traditional sprinklers with drip irrigation systems. happening today, san francisco mayor ed lee will intwo endues his new budget proposal to the board of supervisors. the 2-year spending plan includes budget increases for the police department and san francisco muni. specifically the proposal calls for 400 new police officers and nearly 250 new transportation workers. the mayor's budget director

says there will be more money for housing for the homeless and the poor. she says the extra money comes from growing city revenues. and mayor lee is also set to file official nomination papers this morning to run for re- election. last november he announced his intentions to run again. mayor lee has worked in public office in san francisco for more than 25 years, including five years as city administrator before becoming mayor. the election will be held on november 3rd. homeowners who live near levi stadium or on the peninsula are hoping to cash in next february. many are planning to rent their houses out during the week of super bowl 50. some vacation rental companies say luxury homes on the peninsula could go for as much as $10,000 a night. they say homes very close to the stadium could also draw high rents. vacation rental firms also say even people who don't go to the game may want to have a home base in or near san francisco where many of the pregame

activities will take place. the bay area has a limited supply of hotel rooms, so demand for private places to stay could be high. bay area real estate prices have bounced back so much some homeowners are denieding now is the time to cash out and -- deciding now is the time to cash out and leave the bay area permanently. a research survey shows prices have jumped 10% in the last year. companies that stage homes for sale and moving companies say they are busier than they have ever been. one woman says she's never seen such a strong market for sellers. >> the offer prices are so much higher than the asking prices. i've never seen what we're experiencing right now. >> she adds some high pressures are taking advantage -- some homeowners are taking advantage of the high prices and leaving the bay area. a mortgage consultant said even

with stricter lending requirements her team has made nearly three times as many home loans every month this year compared to years past. 7:10. happening today, san francisco drag queens, they are headed to the offices of facebook to protest facebook's real name policy. you may remember the backlash that started last year when some drag performers had their accounts shut down for using their stageles names. native-americans, domestic violence survivors, others say they've been flagged because of the names on their facebook accounts. now, facebook is arguing the use of real names helps to prevent harassment and hate speech. the demonstration at facebook headquarters in menlo park is due to start at 11:00 this morning. google is simplifying the privacy controls making those controls easier to find and understand. google is trying to make its more than 1 billion users feel more comfortable about the personal information they share.

it was one republican lawmaker who led the charge against the patriot act calling it an invasion of american's privacy. after a dramatic stand on the senate floor, today intelligence officials have lost some of the tools they use to track potential terrorists. are we going to give up our freedom and say take it? i'm not gonna take it anymore. i don't think the american people are gonna take it anymore. >> and that's rand paul, also a

presidential candidate, by the way. he stood his ground during a rare sunday session of congress and paul successfully blocked refuel of the patriot act that allows the nsa to sweep up american's phone data. calls are not recorded but information is collected on who we call and when. this is a program brought to live by nsa leakerrer, edward snowden. this may be a short-lived victory for paul. his fellow lawmakers are expected to pass a compromised bill from the house, what's known as the usa freedom act. it would end the data collection program in its current firm and in its place would be a system that allows the government to search the data held by phone companies on a case-by-case basis. the director of the cia says allowing you the patriot act -- aing the patriot act -- allowing the patriot act to expire is risky. >> i. >> i think there's been political grandstanding that's really skewed the debate on

this issue. >> the senate will continue debate on the proposed usa freedom act this afternoon. the white house is urging senators to move quickly in passing this bill and during the interim, intelligence officials may find it more difficult to obtain wiretaps and other court orders during terrorism investigations. so obviously this is an ongoing debate between national security and issues of privacy for the american people and it will go on. >> yeah. it's interesting -- both sides -- hearing both sides of arguments. >> thank you. let's check traffic. is the drizzle affecting things? >> i think it's slowing things down. i'm gonna start off with san francisco. we have a big situation here with roadwork that's late going or perhaps they planned for this. 101 is backed up all the way onto the lower deck of the bay bridge because of roadwork on the lower deck that's blocking

three lanes eastbound on the bridge. so all of a sudden we have a backup that's not normally there. people are coming down trying to get on the bridge to go to oakland, and they will find a huge backup. people are crowding 280. this is like a bad afternoon commute. you may strongly consider using the san mateo bridge as an alternative. all right. let's move along to the bay bridge getting into the city. traffic is okay. we have a minor non-injury accident at the toll plaza. it really didn't change things much. it's about a 15, 20-minute delay. i want to mention that fremont police are still working the scene of a fatal crash on mission boulevard near the sullivan underpass. this car crashed into a tree early this morning one person was killed. you may see some detours in the area on southbound mission boulevard. you won't able to get through. it looks like northbound traffic is driving by but southbound will remain closed. 7:18. let's go to steve in the

a big sideshow over the weekend near the high street onramp at 880 about midnight on friday. police radio traffic revealed police officers and dispatchers were talking about what was happening out there but officers -- but no officers took action. this is the time of the year when the sideshows increasingly happen as we head into summer. a newly opened trail in richmond gives walkers, hikers and bikers an opportunity to enjoy fabulous shoreline views. the ferry point loop officially opened over the week of the it's 3.6-mile stretch of the san francisco bay trail. the loop surround the park. the board president of the park district says for him walking the trail brought back childhood memories of catching a ferry from richmond to san francisco. >> as a young kid, that was a

major outing event for us with our station wagon, and we'd catch the ferry over to san francisco and have lunch, a picnic lunch. >> with the addition of the ferry point loop, the bay trail has completed 341 miles out of a planned 500-mile long trail. thousands of homeless pets here in the bay area found their foreover homes over the weekend thanks to a group called maddie's fund. they paid the adoption fees for pets at 80 shelters in alameda, contra costa, san francisco, and santa clara counties. according to the group's website, nearly 2300 caps and more -- cats and more than 1500 dogs were adopted. the number could grow since six shelters have not reported their adoption numbers yet. and warriors' star steph curry has a new fan with feathers. this is curry an african

welcome back. 7:30. here is look at some of the top stories -- thieves in the south bay have been targeting gyms stealing property when the members are inside working out. mercury news reports one suspect distracted staff members at the south valley ymca on santa teresa boulevard while another suspect went into the locker room. moments later, a member reported her car had been stolen. the regional auto theft task noticed thieves were stealing car keys after breaking into gym lockers. a man and a woman who police say tried to run over a san jose police officer have been arrested now. they were found hiding in the backyard of a moment on mclaughlin and tully road -- home on mclaughlin and tully

indication that alcohol or drugs were a factor but it's still under investigation. this part of mission boulevard is expected to be closed until noon. let's move along to live pictures or at least maps here. northbound 101, we have very heavy traffic. we had earlier roadwork on the lower deck of the bay bridge. that's been picked up. but traffic is backed up nearly to kand -- in fact, it looks like it's backed up to candlestick on northbound 101. all of the lanes are open but traffic will take a while to unwind. if you are driving from san francisco to oakland, this is an unexpected backup. let's go to the bay bridge toll plaza, where we do have slow traffic here as you drive through. traffic will be busy. i want to mention speaking of the bay bridge, if you are driving on westbound 80, it's going to be very heavy out of pinole and richmond all the way down to the macarthur maze. this commute is just not doing well this morning. back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. in is the first day of the

muni challenge. san francisco mayor ed lee is one of several city leaders who have agreed to use muni as their main form of transportation for 22 days. tara moriarty is live in the city. we understand you've just talked to one of the participants. >> reporter: that's right. a supervisor, scott wiener, he will be jumping on board. we're gonna take a ride with him. we know that san francisco transit riders wanted them to do this so they could better understand the public transportation system. we're at the corner of kos castro and market. we'll be jumping on one of the undergrounds. those who accepted the challenge can tweet hashtag onboard when they ride. many supervisors, including scott wiener, will be catching the underground in about a half- hour. >> i thought it was a great idea. we have so many challenges around public transportation, the bay area will grow by and

concord being treated for a head injury, she fell out of a second-story apartment window last night. it happened at anapartment complex near the solano drive- in around 6:00 last night. emergency crews say the little girl had a head injury, was completely alert when any arrived. she was taken to children's hospital in oakland but the hospital is not releasing any new information about her condition. well, a trial is set to begin today in the south bay over whether a san jose school district knew about abuse taking place in the classroom. two years ago, craig chandler was convicted of molesting five students at ob whaley elementary school. he's serving 75 years to life. the san jose mercury news reports the families of four of the victims claim the evergreen school district ignored warning signs but the school district is claiming it never knew about the abuse. the family of the late robin williams will head to court as the battle over his

san francisco supervisors are expected to discuss new efforts to get people to drink less soda. ma'am cook is here to tell us the city has a few different ideas to sample. good morning. san francisco's board of supervisors scheduled to discuss three bills that would be a warning about sodas and other suge yary drinks. the discussion are include arguments from medical professionals. san francisco has been looking into ways to cut back on sales of sugary drinks and supervisors are reviewing three proposals. one would require ads on billboard, buses and other city- owned property to include warning labels saying they

contribute to obesity, diabetes and tooth decay. another proposal would completely ban soda ads on public property and a third would outlaw city money being used to buy soda. >> i think it's a good idea. i don't think people understand how much sugar is in those products. >> the soda industry put nearly $9 million to defeat a proposal last november and the strit leaders plan to be part of the discussion today. if you want to take part, it could be crowded but the meeting is scheduled to start at 1:30 at city hall likely to be a lively discussion. >> thank you. a ban on styrofoam takes effect today in loss gat toes. it was approved to reduce the amount of sky row foam and it applies to restaurants and stores. now, supermarkets that sell eggs and raw meat are exempt.

missing. storms and tornadoes have left a trail of damage in indianapolis. trees were toppled and cars were thrown on top of each other. the national weather service confirmed a tornado swept through the area this weekend with winds up to 90 miles per hour. 7:54. a police officer in georgia is called a hero for rescuing two people in the same day. nathan ernst is a police officer in holly springs, 35 miles north of atlanta. on saturday he responded to a 911 call about a man overdosing on heroin. he rushed to the scene, gave the man a shot to immediately counteract the effects of that drug and then just two hours later, another 911 call. this one about a house fire. he and another officer jumped into action. >> had i to duck to go inside the house. there was a lot of smoke. the sergeant and myself were able to pick her up and get her out of the house. >> my hero. like i told you, without you, i

this? >> reporter: tori, news of the burglaries have spread. some people, gym members say they feel vulnerable. they are trying not to bring valuables inside the lockers. but some things can't be afoeded like bringing in car keys. two men were acting sphish shusly in the -- sphish suspiciously at this ymca. one man went in and disstablthed the front desk employee while the other went in the locker room. they were stealing car keys an breaking into gym lockers. we spoke to a gym member who knew about the burglaries. listen to what he did this morning. >> i got here a few minutes late, my company lap cop, i took it with me -- laptop, i took it with me. and i ran in and left my car unlocked and i was glad to see

couple rammed into a patrol car and several other parked cars. the suspects left their car on tully road and ran into a neighborhood. at 10:00, officers found the suspects hiding in a backyard and arrested them for assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer. they were also wanted on felony warrants. starting today, new water use limitations take effect for lawns and landscaping at new commercial buildings. on june 15th, there will be no new re-- there will be new restrictions for housing developments. the developers have to figure out how they are gonna meet the limits and local government agencies have to enforce them. developers can reduce the use by plant be shrubs and bushes instead of grabs or by replacing sprinklers with the drip irrigation systems. maror ed lee will inintroduce his his new budget proposal. the plan includes budget

a memorial keeps growing for her 6-year-old girl. her burned body was found 90 miles from her home in sacramento. a candlelight vigil was held for her. there is a memorial at the arco station next to her home. she disappeared on thursday and on friday, her body was found in a burning field. police still don't know how she died. her mother's boyfriend, 25-year- old juan rivera was arrest and charged with her murder. >> it's very hard. we got kids of our own. it's rough just to hear about the situation and everything. >> the little girl's family, they are focused on raising money to pay for her funeral. police say rivera is the only suspect. he's due to be normally charged

they say when he initially broke into the dealership around 5:00 this morning, he tried stealing a different car but had trouble getting out of the pedestrian exit. so he gave up on it and stole an m3. that's a $100,000 car. he drove it through the window and ended up crashing several blocks away near the ruby nightclub. officers say he slammed into taxi. the cabdriver was asleep inside and did suffer minor injuries. right now, police are reviewing surveillance footage. they have the suspect in custody. we do not have any information on him. we know he was a male and this is gonna be quite the cleanup. tara moriarty,

drive in. at about 6:00 last night. crews say the 4-year-old had a head injury but she was completely alert when they arrived. she was taken to children's hospital in oakland. but so far the hospital is not giving out new information about her condition. a trial is set to begin today in the south bay over whether a san jose school district knew about abuse happening in a classroom. two years ago, craig chandler was convicted of molesting five students at ob whaley elementary school. he's now serving 75 years to life in state prison. the san jose mercury news reports the families of four of the victims claim the evergreen school district ignored warning signs but the school district said it had no prior knowledge of that abuse. a former contra costa county sex crimes prosecutor is returning to the d.a.'s office today seven years after being accused of raping a junior colleague. michael grisette has been on paid leave his arrest in 2008.

today he resumes litigating cases as a deputy district attorney. a judge threwout the criminal charges against him in 2011 citing procedural errors and the fact the alleged victim received a settlement from the county over the way her claims were handled which was not disclosed to the grand jury. he maintains he's innocent and is duing the county for malicious prosecution and defamation. a judge threw out that lawsuit in march but he's appealed. stanford university is set to begin reactivating it campus water fountains but only for a brief period of time. in anticipation of the june commencement program, the fountains are being turned on today. they've been shut off for more than a year because of the drought. they will all go try again the day after the graduation system. big weekend at the

after surfing a concussion in game five of the western conference finals warriors fans are hoping klay thompson will be ready to go later this week. there are several reports that he no longer has recurring headaches and is expected to play in game one on thursday night. no official announcement has come from thompson or the warriors just yet. they will take the court for practice in preparation for thursday's game against the cleveland cavaliers here in oakland. well, a 92-year-old woman a cancer survivor has conquered a new challenge. her name is harriette thompson of charlotte, north carolina. she lame became the oldest person to -- became the oldest person to finish a marathon. she ran the marathon in san diego. she says raising money for the leukemia and lymphoma society inspired her to run. guess what. she may do it again next year at the young age of 93.

computers from 1976 were ever built. managers at the clean bay area recycling center in milpitas say the computer was inside boxes dropped by a woman in april after her husband died. she did not want a receipt and the recycling center has no way to contact her but the center wants to split the $200,000 the private collector paid them for the vintage computer and the person remembers what this woman looks like. so all she has to do is go in there and get $100,000. >> she didn't know. she didn't know. >> i'm so guilty of that. i just throw it away. sal, you don't want to throw away our commute. but it's been busy out there. >> it would be nice to start over. that's for sure. these commutes are not doing that well. let's start off with a commute on the -- in the east bay. i want to mention that the eastshore freeway is taking its time with drivers, carquinez bridge to the macarthur maze.

it's a really long commute. let me show you what's going on here. you can see all of the red from hercules into richmond out to the maze. we also have a lot of slow traffic this morning at the toll plaza itself as you come up to the pay gate. san francisco has been a nightmare commute. northbound 101, northbound 280 getting into the city, 101 is backed up from before the airport all the way up into the city. southbound 101 is recovering in marin county after an earlier crash. the east bay southbound 880 and weekend 5 80 are slow. northbound 87 at taylor. but 8 a, are slow. that has not been a great commute. if you can pull the i'm gonna work from home card this morning, that might help or b.a.r.t. let's go to steve. well, a lot of low clouds around. there's some sun already inland. temperatures will be hard pressed to get above about 78, even for those far enough away

from any marine influence. that system right there. northern california into oregon, rather strong for this time of year. enhanced our low cloud deck and continued that theme this morning giving us a lot of light rain and drizzle. it's very mild due to the cloud cover. which is why we're seeing low 60s. livermore is in there, mountain view, redwood city, concord, 61. most temperatures are running about 2 to 5 degrees where they were. sfo, 624 hours ago. if it feels warmer to you, it is. southerly breeze, southeast, southwest. there's a component of a breeze. napa airport has a north breeze. bodega bay water temp 51. half moon bay, 56. but monterey is 57. that's pretty warm. that's come up from 52. a lot of low clouds. it will burn back. we'll get the sun but the system to the -- to the system to the north. this is tropical storm blanca. there are signs some of this

moisture might get caught up. another low is dropping down on thursday. nothing will happen, tuesday, wednesday, thursday. some of that could happen into it as the low begins to rotate around. friday, some of that moisture moves up. there will be thunderstorms for the sierra. look what happens by saturday. shower activity to the north of us. south of us. something to keep an eye on. we'll key. there's not a consensus. but there's a lot there. there is a low moving into the picture. it would not surprise me. it's kind of looic a recipe -- it's kind of like a recipe. it will take a while for others. temperatures way below normal in the inland. still below for the coastal locations. 60s and 70s. a little warmer on tuesday. not much. i don't see much in the way of a warmup. we'll have to watch thursday, friday and into the weekend, possible thunderstorms and temperatures staying below normal here for a while. >> yeah.
