speech but demonstrators say the policy actually allows others to harassuressers who oest under assumed names by flagging them for removal. >> there are survivors of domestic violence, native- americans, schoolteachers, mental health professionals, so many others that use names that are legitimate and authentic. >> in its response, facebook says it has clarified its policy to make it clear that a user's authentic name does not necessarily have to be their legal name. it hey lous people to verify their name with a piece of mail. a magazine subscription or other document. it was like something out of an action movie in san francisco. a man stole a car, trove it -- drove it off the showroom floor and straight into the massive store front. police say the bmw came flying through the front door of the

dealership on howard and south van ness after 5:00 a.m. this morning. officers say the suspect tried to steal another car but had trouble getting it out of the pedestrian exit. he gave up on that and stole a $100,000 bmwm-3 instead -- bmw m-3 instead. he drove it through the window and drove it through the ruby nightclub on mayeson -- mayson. police were able to catch the suspect. he ran into a taxicab. the driver suffered minor injuries. the suspect is 37 years old. police in the south bay have caught a group of car thieves targeting people working out in gyms. janine de la vega tells us how they were operating and why despite the arrests this is still an open investigation. >> reporter: a morning workout at gym turned into a morning full of phone calls to police and insurance companies. in the past month, investigators say a crew of burglars were taking out

parking lots and got away with six cars. one of them at the south valley ymca. some neighbors say the crime has trickled into the neighborhood. my son's bike was stolen. my wife's car was opened up. things like gps, cds are beingen. >> reporter: -- taken. >> reporter: police say one of the suspects distracted a front office employee and the other went to the locker room and stole car keys after breaking into gym lockers. this woman sympathizes with the victims because of what happened with her son in the parking lot a year ago. >> my son's van was vandalized. they took his cell phone. there was glass all ovaller. >> reporter: it's unknown if that case is related to the recent un-- recent one.

surveillance camera captured images in that one. these are the three arrests. authorities were able to recover five vehicles they allegedly stole. >> it makes you feel vulnerable but i just don't bring vulnerables with me in the gym. >> reporter: police are looking for two other suspects also responsible for the burglaries. janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. san jose police arrested a man and woman who police say tried to run over an officer. police tried to pull over the couple on mclaughlin and story road about 6:30 yesterday evening. the suspects drove toward an officer on foot and just barely missed him. after a chase, investigators say the couple rammed into a patrol car and several other parked cars. the suspects left their car near tully road and ran into a neighborhood.

residents were told to stay inside their homes just before 10:00 last night. officers found the suspects hiding in a backyard and arrested them for assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer. they were also wanted on felony warrants. a section of mission boulevard and fremont is expected to reopen this noon hour after a deadly single vehicle crash. the southbound lanes of mission were closed at the sullivan overpass. as you can see, the honda civic hit a tree. fremont police say a 61-year- old man was killed in the crash around 3:45 this morning. the first officers found an unresponsive male is the only occupant of a honda civic that had hit a tree. the driver was transported to a local hospital with life- threatening injuries. and did not survive unfortunately. >> the cause of the crash is under investigation. police say there's no indication right now that alcohol or drugs were a factor. the family of the late robin williams has more time to

resolve their dispute over his estape. in a hearing that lasted -- estate. in a hearing that lasted less than a month, the judge set a new court date of july 27th. williams's widow susan and her three adult stepchildren cannot agree on how much money susan should receive from the estate. the actor left his tiburon home from her. but the will did not say how much money she should get. the family is over odds at hundreds of his personal belongings. ed lee presented the new budget proposal to the board of supervisors. the 2-year spending plan includes budget increases for the police department and san francisco muni according totten yoicle. specifically the proposal would pay for 400 new police officers and nearly 250 new transportation workers. the mayor's budget director says there will also be more money for the homeless and the

poor. extra money comes from growing city revenues and mayor lee filed official nomination papers to run for re-election. we saw it live here on ktvu during "mornings on 2." last november, lee announced his intentions to run again. >> i'm working hard. i've never stopped working hard and whether it was at public works or purchasing or human rights commission, i have always focused on how this office and how working with the board can really provide very specific benefits. >> mayor lee has worked in public office in texas for more than 25 years before becoming mayor. the election is november 3rd. and the city of san francisco is again taking aim at sugary drinks and will probably have a fight on its hands. in 90 minutes, the board of supervisors is scheduled to discuss three ordinances meant to reduce soda consumption.

one would ban the city from spending money on soda. another would require warning labels saying sugary drinks contribute to obesity, diabetes and tooth decay. a third measure would ban soda ads on public property altogether. >> i think it's a good idea. i don't think a lot of people understand how much sugar is in a lot of coke products. so they drink it as an everyday drink. >> the soda industry spent more than $9 million to tee feet a proposal in san francisco last november. industrial lobbyists say they will fight the advertising ads as well. new limitation goes into effect for new commercial buildings with restrictions for new housing developments to follow june 15th. the commission volted to change development -- voted to change this and it's up to developers

to figure out how to meet the limits and local government agencies to enforce them. developers can reduce water use by planting shrubs and bushes instead of grass or by replacing traditional sprinklers with drip irrigation sprinklers. the swimming pool industry is fighting back because of the drought. water agencies across the state have massed new limits on filling or refilling swimming pools after governor jerry brown's water conservation orders but the california swimming pool and spa industry says until the swimming pool uses less water than landscaping for lawns. officials bran plan to ride muni for the next 22 days. they also promise to tweet about their experiences.

patriot act have expired after senate republicans failed to come up with enough votes to extend it. that means the controversial collection of data from americans' phone records. our reporter reports one of the key voices against renewing the act is a republican presidential candidate. >> reporter: several anti- terror tools have now lapsed after the senate failed to extend the patriot act. the act expired after midnight after senators meeting in a rare sunday session could not come to an agreement. rand paul of the biggest critics blocking any chance for renewal. >> here's the thing -- i actually want more collection of records on terrorists. i just want less collection of innocent americans. >> reporter: the lapse means the nsa can no longer collect the bulk of collections of americans' phone records. no longer having the surveillance and some other now expired programs is worrisome for several officials. >> we've heard what the head of the cia said today on the

sunday show. he's afraid that something is gonna happen when this act expires. that's not just my assessment of the situation or the head of the cia, even senate republicans feel the same day. >> reporter: the senators are widely expected to pass a house approved bill which extends the now barred programs. the usa freedom act would, however, change the bulk phone data collection. the house passed bill, it's certainly not ideal. but along with votes of modest ameantments to sure the program -- to ensure the program works is on the way forward. >> reporter: back to you. the state department says john kerry's orthopedic surgeon is flying to switzerland so he can fly back with kerry to the u.s. for treatment of his broken leg. this is video of kerry at a past cycling event.

this. so the possibility of a few sprinkles not out of the question but i think we'll be mainly dry and temperatures will be below the seasonal average. as we get into the afternoon today, notice how the rain continues to the north. here at home, we're partly sunny. we're partly cloudy. maybe a little bit of drizzle. that will be about it. the onshore breeze is with us. fairfield reporting 15 miles an hour. concord, at 5 and napa 14-had- mile-an-hour onshore breeze. oakland has 3. novato reporting 6. as we get into the temperature, these temperatures are a tad warmer than where we were 24 hours ago. it's a mild day in areas like fairfield and 68 for hayward. 64 for san francisco. into the south bay, 69 san jose as well as mountain view. with all of the cloud cover could feel muggy for some of us. upper 60s to low 70s will remain in the forecast for the north bay, 71 in napa. 71 for santa rosa.

u.s. manufacturing growth accelerated to may for the first time in six months propelled by new orders and increase in hiring. taking a live look at the big board, the dow is up 71. the nasdaq up 22 and the s&p is up 9. stocks are also up following news of a big acquisition in the semiconductor industry. santa clara-based intel is buying san jose based altera for $16.7 billion in cash.

it comes after an earlier round of talks between the two companies end end in april. stockholders for altera will receive $54 per share. homeowners who live near levi stadium are hoping to cash in next february. many are planning to rent their houses out during the week of super bowl 50. luxury homes on the peninsula could go for as much as $10,000 a night. they say homes very close to the stadium could also draw high rents. vacation rental firms say even people who don't go to the game may want to have a home base in or near san francisco where many of the pregame activities will take place. the bay area has a limited supply of hotel rooms so demand for private places to say could be high. tonight at 5:00, warnings about earthquakes that never happened. tonight, we the usgs about a string of false alarms in the past few days and how these phantom events got recorded. that's coming up tonight on the
