plane crash came from a viewer who called to tell us that he could hear the crash and an explosion about 9:00 tonight. the plane went down north of 580 in an area of open field. the faa said the plane had taken off from livermore airport just a couple of miles away, and the alameda county fire department says a small grass fire started as a cause of the crash. >> the plane is a piper 22, similar to this one. we do not know how many people are onboard that plane. the pa22 is a single engine aircraft known for impressive speeds. here is a photo from the scene, posted to instagram by jessica rhodes of livermore. the initial caller told us it appeared the plane was trying to perform an aerobatic maneuver and was close to the ground when it crashed. we have a crew close to the scene now, and we will have more for you coming up a little later in this newscast. people run for cover in san francisco as police catch a

parolee after a rush hour chase ends with his car crashing into several others. a dramatic take down by sfpd after a police chase takes officers right into crowded traffic during the height of rush hour. ktvu's ken pritchett, and his photographer just happened to be right there. ken's live now from the city. so ken, what did you see? >> reporter: we were stopped at that red light. we saw one police car with lights on, go on market on one way. suddenly 30 yards in front of us, there was a crash and a chaotic scene, as police, guns drawn, jumped on top of this car as they tried to arrest what they were calling a dangerous parolee. >> reporter: to the left of your screen, you can see a police baton crashing into a car window, and a police officer on top of that car, a struggle to pull a wanted parolee from behind the driver's seat. dozens of witnesses record the crash. some people scramble for safety.

a police chase of several miles stopped when the suspect as cadillac wedges between two cars on fifth. camille hayes was behind the wheel, and saw police in her rear-view mirror. >> i was trying to figure out what was happening, and the next thing i knew, something had smashed into my car and police had swarmed over the car wedged in behind me. >> reporter: trying to drive, despite being wedged in. >> the grinding of the metal was pretty dramatic. >> reporter: police say the man pulled from the car was suspected of a parole stop around 5:30 this evening. >> he was wanted, armed and dangerous. he's a prison gang member from a pretty violent prison gang. >> reporter: police say he sped away, striking a parole agent who was not injured, and multiple cars were hit along the way. >> it started swerving in and out of traffic trying not to hit things and around the

corner like a bat out of hell. >> reporter: a few blocks later, stopped by dense rush hour traffic. one passenger suffered minor injuries. the suspect taken away on a gurney. camille hayes left with a badly damaged car. >> going to be a small hassle, but i'm just happy that i am not hurt and no one on the scene was seriously hurt. >> reporter: this started on the 1400 block of enson in bay view. police say there were two civilians who suffered minor injuries, and the suspect's name has not yet been released. >> ken pritchett in san francisco tonight, thank you. also in san francisco we now know the name of a man accused of stealing a $100,000 car from a dealership today and then driving it right off the showroom floor and through a huge plate glass window. a police spokesperson says 37-

year-old peter dureoen stole the car. the car was a bmw m3 and it ended up hitting a parked taxi several blocks away. the cab driver was asleep inside and suffered minor injuries. he was arrested about an hour and a half later. today, the world was introduced to caitlin jener, formerly known as bruce jenner. the 1976 olympic gold medalist graces the vanity fair magazine with the headline, call me caitlin. the public debut is seen as a key moment in the transgender movement. >> reporter: within minutes of those photos being released, it created an internet and social media frenzy, but activists say there is much more to bruce jenner's story. that it is a point of pride, and a story they hope will lead to more conversations about transgender issues.

appeal. pleasantton police released this picture of alexander kurtz. police say he batter add 13- year-old girl in november of last year. the alleged assault was at the building kids daycare center kurtz was supervising an event there. the 13-year-old was a former student who returned there for some reason. the owner of the daycare says she sawed incident. >> the detectives told us that he is being taken to jail and he will not be coming back to work and i should let the parents know. >> kurtz was later fired. the owner said he had been working there for about three years and had cleared all background checks. police say he had no prior record. the head of the tsa was reassigned today after a damaging report on the failure of airport security. the tsa screeners missed 95% of the fake bombs and weapons that were smuggled through check

points during unannounced tests. >> reporter: the internal investigation by the tsa found security failures at dozens of airports. more than a decade after 9/11, investigators smuggled banned weapons or fake explosives through security check points. >> really not that much better than it was before 9/11. this was really meant to be a deterrent. it's not the great wall of china. >> reporter: the classified report found tsa screeners failed 95% of the time. 67 out of 70 tests carried out by special investigators known as red teams. in one instance, an undercover agent with a fake bomb strapped to his back set off a magnetometer, but the screener failed to find it during a follow up pat down. this was supposed to mimic the underwear bomb that nearly brought down a jet over detroit on christmas day, 2009. the vast majority of threats are thwarted by good intelligence. >> all of them are sharing

only one person, the pilot was onboard. ktvu's jana katsuyama has just arrived on scene. what can you tell us? >> reporter: frank, we're right at the corner of galaway. pushing in on the scene that you can see from behind us. across from this field, you see a number of emergency response vehicles over there. we understand that the plane crashed over there across the field about three miles northeast of livermore airport. i just received an update from an faa spokesperson within the past half hour, and he tells me that right now, officials believe the pilot was the only person onboard. right now, there is no word on the condition of that pilot. he does say that they believe it was a single engine piper pa22. that aircraft took off about 9:00 tonight from the livermore airport. and it apparently reported control problems soon after departing. now we understand that there were some people who were here

who saw flames coming from the crash sight. there was a quick emergency response from various people and we have been in touch with the alameda county fire officials. they're trying to collect evidence, and get some more information about what the condition of that pilot was. again, the faa is thinking that the pilot was the only person onboard. we do understand that there are personnel from the faa and the ntsb who are going to be coming out here to try and help with the investigation. but right now, you can see we're more than an hour after this flight, which supposedly crashed in there. still out there at the scene. we aren't seeing the same kinds of flames coming out from that area, but certainly this is something which is a great concern. they're not identifying who that person was on that plane and the faa spokesperson is telling us they have not yet determined what the number was. the tail number on that plane, which is what helps them make out identification. so we are going to be staying out here on this scene.

a relatively new program at the state capitol is stirring up controversy. state senate back in february hired two part time employees, who's duties included driving senators home anytime day or night. richard sharp is live now at the state capitol with the details, including who's footing the bill for this program. >> reporter: taxpayers are footing the bill. two different part time positions that work during the overnight hours, at a cost of about $2,500 per person, per month. the sergeant of arms says these are for emergency services, these two people, but i spoke with one state senator who said this is a joke and definitely a waste of taxpayer money. >> it's not something most state senators want to talk

about. drivers on standby, during the overnight hours just for senators. officially, they're for emergency services. but senator jeff stone says that's not the reality. >> there's no reason to have anybody on staff 24 hours a day, which is really nothing more than a specialized transport for those that may over- indulge. >> reporter: later he pleaded no contest to a lesser charge. the new overnight senate employees were hired in february. the leader of the state senate would not go on camera but released a statement saying the positions are important and a matter of security. the harvard jarvis taxpayers association says not only is this a waste of taxpayer money -- >> there are taxi cabs available. there is uber. and certainly, this program sets up the expectation that legislators are going to be out

thank you. >> starting today, water agencies across the state have to comply with a water mandate to cut use by 25%. each district has a goal for water reduction. customers also face new rules on how much water they can use, and for what purpose. those caught violating the rules will get hit with surcharges and fines. >> first offense, that would be a warning. second offense, would be $250. third offense would be a $500 fine. then we could either continue to fine people or eventually we could shut off service. >> those who water their yards more than two days a week, wash their driveways or hose down their cars without a shutoff nozzle will face fines. local rules will vary. for san francisco, the goal is an 8% reduction in water use. in alameda county, they're looking to reduce water by 16%, and looking at 20% cuts for san jose, and marin municipal. cut backs go as high as 36% for

more clouds lingering. burns off pretty quickly, then temperatures tomorrow get up there, maybe a degree or two warmer, especially inland. kind of warm out right now. livermore 62. san jose at 63. mountain view at 62 right now. so it's pretty warm. microclimates as you move through them. mid-60s, upper 60s towards berkely, albany, castro valley. these start clicking into the mid-70s when you get out in walnut creek. upper 70s toward eastern valley. you might find an 80 south toward gilroy, or morgan hill. we'll see, but it's not going to be, incremental changes. no major changes here. in san francisco, it's cloudy. maybe some drizzle, there was a little bit of drizzle this morning, measurable. up to a 10th of an inch showed up in the san rafael area. in san jose, it will be a little bit warmer, obviously. further south, 74 for a daytime

high. you start off cloudy, but it's a nice day. tomorrow, i think will be noticeably nicer than today, because i think the cloud cover, there will be more sunshine, more quickly tomorrow than there was today. 77 in clear lake. 71 in novato. these are forecast highs for tuesday. wednesday, they're going to be maybe a degree cooler, or the same. thursday and friday, the temperatures will start to come back up. but not a ton. low 80s, maybe some mid-80s. but not what you might expect for early june. i would expect this time of the year, i'd expect the inland bay valleys to be knocking off low 90s easy. mid-90s wouldn't be out of the question, but instead, we're in this kind of cool pattern that wants to continue with a slight chance for a sprinkle in here as we get in towards the sunday and the weekend, you'll see it pop in here. i don't know. like we had this morning, it will be a real light not event. but we haven't been talking about wildfires, so that's a good thing. >> we haven't. i know usually this time of year, we covered many. >> it's been nice and mild. >> there is one tomorrow, a cat

very well, and he has won 8. couldn't buy any good news for bay area baseball squads today. best thing to happen, the a's had the day off as they travel to detroit city. the cal bears had their season conclude in the regional final leading up to the college baseball world series. texas a&m up 1-0. deep for the bears and gone. solo homer. cal is dead even. 1-1 off matt kent there. come the 8th inning, texas a&m back up 2-1. adding on here. young hunter milton with a base hit right back up. he got himself an rbi and a 3-1 final. the aggies move onto the super regional. a good year for cal nonetheless. the only game for the warriors right now, the waiting game. if you're going to have this much time off, you might as well put it to good use. the warriors receive encouraging news. sports part 2 next.
