problems. last month ucsf hospitals are are phasing out sugar drinks. now back to a story we've been following since we went on the air at 4:00 this morning. all of the lanes of highway 101 they are now open again after a deadly crash that happened out there a couple hours ago. ktvu fox 2 janine de la vega is now at the chp offices now because well they have removed the wreckage from the freeway. so what is the latest? what happened? >> yeah dave that scene was cleared. as you mentioned. northbound 101 just south of blossom hill. tow truck ended uptaking away that mangled vehicle all the lanes though were -- several of them were blocked earlier and completely shut down. but it's all back open now. that car ended up catching fire and so did the vegetation. this all happened at 2:00 a.m.. the driver of a subaru station wagon veered off 101 and crashed head on to a tree.

passing motorist saw the car smoking and called it in. emergency crews weren't able to rescue the person. they were already dead. the impact of the crash was so powerful it pushed the motor into the passenger seat. officer were not able to tell if the victim was a man or a woman. the investigation may be challenging because officers say no witnesses stopped and the only occupant in the car is dead so it's unknown if they fell asleep in the vehicle or if speed or alcohol played a factor in this. the coroner will be working on the identity of the victim. all we were told from chp is the sue rue did have washington license plates and the person did have luggage in the back but they still don't know who the person was. time is 6:07. a $1.6 billion budget has been approved by bart's board of directors to improve the aging system for its riders. >> motion passes unanimously.

welcome back to mornings on 2. a new york police say they now believe the two convicted murders are somewhere near the maximum security prison they escaped from. reportedly a female prison employee had agreed to be the getaway driver for david sweat and richard matt but then changed her mind. then then navigated a tunnel of pipes before they surfaced out of manhole. also new this morning another person has been arrested in connection with that boston terror plot. officers took nicholas re vin

skiff into custody. >> i was taking out the trash and a couple cars went around the corner and then a couple minutes later he came out in handcuffs. >> rivinski and another man in custody encouraged rahim to carry out a knife attack on police officers. rahim was shot and killed during a confrontation with officers earlier this month. you may remember that rahim's brother is the leader of an oakland mosque. a cleveland prosecutor will let a grand jury decide if they will indict two white police officers for the shooting death of a young african american boy who was carrying a becomes bb gun.

this case has caused protests in cleveland and around the country raising questions about police use of force. a malaysia airlines jet had to make an emergency landing in australia today after reports of an engine fire. that jet carrying 300 passengers took off from melbourne but then returned back to the airport minutes later. the pilot reported seeing an engine fire warning light. it had been heading to lam poor. it landed safely. one flight that disappeared over the indian ocean, another shot down over ukraine. he's back. former oakland a's star jose canseco remember him? he will be swinging for the fences tonight in the north bay. jose turns 51 next month. starting tonight he will play two games this weekend for the sonoma stompers. it's an independent minor league team. they are calling it jose

coming up to bay point. it is a little slow on this friday. it's not quite as deep. we've been doing this for a long time. i can tell what highway 4 looks like just by looking at certain areas. it's not as deep here. it's not as deep in antioch and barring any crashes i think we will have a lighter commute on this very freeway. let's move along and take a look at the rest of the east bay. you can see that here for yourself. normally by now we have more slow traffic in the way of sensors. and really not a lot going on. even the san mateo and the dumbarton bridge looking pretty good. we have a backup here. it's a nice picture for you photographers. we can use a little front lighting. it is backed up for about a 15- 20 minute delay getting into san francisco. let's bring steve in here at 6:20. hannah and black magic woman he made it famous but

degrees. thunderstorms might erupt over the central and southern sierra. i doubt for tahoe and truckee. it's the fog near the coast the farther south you go all the way to southern california it's june gloom 50s on the temps. the fog doesn't make much of an impact each hour. i don't think it's going to matter. temperatures will really warm up pretty fast. 83 in redding. 37 up in truckee. water temps have gone up, up, up. 59 half-moon bay. the low that gave us the rain on wednesday is no coming right out -- is now coming out of the four corners. out ahead of that picks up low level gulf moisture. texas panhandle, oklahoma into kansas and that system will probably park itself there for today if you are heading to denver. or dia. for us sunny and warm to hot. the low that gave us that rain is long gone. just saw it in denver. high pressure builds in today so warm to hot.

away from the coast. reduced visibility and maybe some touchy driving there on highway 1. 60s to 10:s to 90s to near 100 degrees. so thick morning fog. sunny and warmer. closer to the bay 70s and 80s. and then mid 90s to upper 90s for some. certainly for gilroy. 60s on the coast. too much fog. 70s and 80s to near 90s. does look a little cooler saturday and more so sunday. >> we can handle this. we can handle it. time is 6:23. there is a major transformation happening in the san francisco neighborhood. we'll take a look inside one of the first affordable homes.

come out and learn skills from local high school and college coaches and players. many obsessions already sold out with warrior fever. there are open sessions throughout the bay area though over the next few months. the drought is forcing bay area sports teams to really get creative about saving water. the grounds keepers they cut back on over night watering but the field got too hard. the players were at risk of getting hurt. the giants are using a computer system and also sensors to figure out just how much over night watering is really needed. the team is also pressure washing seats every other game. and between the crews are going through the stands they are actually cleaning the seats with spray bottles and hand towels. now the oakland coliseum it's 22 feet below sea levelest the field there holds the moisture better. the a's are trying to avoid watering that infield dirt while the team is out on the road. they're also trying to reduce how often they spray down the

>> we do have a really thick fog bank and inland it's like weather fog bank it's not going to matter but coast it is. there will be a huge difference in some of the temps. water temps have come up so i expect this fog to retreat. inland it's no impact at all. it will be probably by sunday as we see lower pressure move in. so 60s for some. it's going to be 90s to 100s for others. 50s and 60s right now. although 52 santa rosa. fog reports petaluma and santa rosa and nevada. not much of a delta breeze. a few thunderstorms might develop over the central and southern sierra. high pressure is in for today and starts to back off starting tomorrow. thick fog around the coast. parts of the bay. mainly the coast. kind of have a muggy feel. 90s to near 100s for some. 60s and 70s for others. all right sal where would you like to start? >> we are starting in the east bay. and we are looking at traffic that is not bad.

in fact, i've been very happy to see that the traffic is doing pretty well. a little more crowded on 880 south. northbound is okay as well. getting up to the toll plaza there are no major problems here. it is getting better. i predict by the time we get to 8:00 or maybe even a little bit before we will start to see some drastic improvement here unless something changes. this is a look at 880. you can see a lot of green here on the san mateo bridge, on the dumbarton bridge and the nimitz freeway. 6:33 let's go back to the desk. san francisco police have now released surveillance video of a violent gas station robbery that happened last month in an effort to catch two suspects. not only did they try to steal cash but they tried to kill the store clerk. tara moriarty is at that gas station now. you've been out there since 4:00 this morning and you talk to another store employee who

was supposed to have been working that night. so what is that person saying. >> reporter: carlos says he couldn't sleep for a week he was so terrified the robbers would come back since they hadn't been caught. he normally works the graveyard shift alone but he had swapped shifts at the last minute. he tells us he is lucky to be alive. this surveillance video shows two men shooting at the clerk on may 19th at 2:40 in the morning. they had just robbed the safe and began to chase after the clerk firing 4-5 shots. jimenez says his friend was working that night. he was saved because the gunman tripped. >> when you saw the video when the younger one was pointing the gun at the man he didn't have a clear shot because there was the cigarette display and he actually tripped over the ice cream bar machine and that

saved his life because then he started he had a couple more times to get more steps away. >> reporter: fortunately the bullets did miss the clerk. they escaped in a light colored sedan and drove off with a possible third person inside. both are described as being in their early 20s. now we ask jimenez whatever happened to that store clerk and coming up in one hour, we will tell you what he said. live from san francisco i'm tara moriarty, back to you. >> thank you. we'll talk to you later. new this morning one person is dead after a crash on highway 101 in san jose. janine de la vega is at the chp office there with some of the details of what happened. janine. >> reporter: this was a solo vehicle accident. so it is the driver that is dead. the chp says the victim was so badly burned they can't even tell if it was a man or woman. this accident happened just

before 2:00 a.m.. a subaru station wagon veered off the lanes of northbound 101 just south of blossom hill and smacked into a tree. the car caught on fire and so did the tree. the chp says it appears the victim died on impact. it's unknown what caused that driver to if drive off to the -- they had several lanes of traffic closed earlier this morning while they investigated but everything is back open now. the coroner almost work on identifying the person. chp told us the vehicle had washington license plates and that it appeared there was luggage in the back. pam. >> interesting. all right. thank you for that update. 6:36 is the time. a vigil is is planned for this evening for a man shot and killed. they found the man passed out in a car on saturday morning.

now he has a handgun on the seat next to him. police say they tried to wake him several times. officers say they finally broke a window which they say led to a confrontation and then the shooting. he died at the hospital. the vigil is being held at 6:00 p.m. on lake shore avenue. this was first deadly officer involved shooting in more than two years. a funeral is being held far 16-year-old girl from clover dale high school. her body was found saturday morning near the banks of the russian river. police believe she was thrown from a bridge during a street race. they say one of the cars lost control and crashed into the area where contreras was standing. her body wasn't found until eight hours later and police are still investigating why no one searched for her right after the collision. our time is 6:37. police in palo alto want your help to solve the case of a college student that was killed 14 years ago.

maria hsiao was out with her sister and friends when she was hit by a stray bullet. and despite plenty of witnesses around, police still have no suspects. investigators have put this video about the case on the palo alto police facebook page. they are hoping to generate more leads. >> to have a homicide like this that is so shocking to the community and so senseless in terms of the victim really stays with us. >> now the police as well as hsiao's family is offering a $100,000 reward leading to the arrest of the person responsible. dick costolo is stepping down growing criticism the company is not growing fast enough. he will step down on july 1st. cofounder jack dorsey coming back as interim ceo. there is also concern about the

popularity of competition. >> there are other apps like snap chat that have come up in that time that have become much bigger than twitter. >> analysts say twitter has to become more attractive to advertisers as well. dorsey says there will be no significant changes until the company selects the permanent ceo. time is 6:39. uber has created a mobile game. it's an effort to help the drivers get to know their way around san francisco better. uber says customers complain drivers don't know how to get around the city so uber has created a game. it's called uber drive. you open the game, you see several characters you almost work with through the day. now the players pick up and drop off passengers around san francisco by tapping an interactive map. you earn points by accepting trip requests and taking more efficient routes. it also has a trivia mode so the players can learn more about the city.

it's called uber drive. it's available for free in the apple store. today we will get a sneak peek at the newly renovated section of san francisco's dolores park. crews have been working on the northern side of the park for the past 14 months. improvements include new restrooms, new tennis and basketball courts and dog play area and new grass. the official grand opening is scheduled for next thursday. but again we will get a sneak peek today. more than $1 billion for bart. what bart plans to do with that money that could mean for comfort and cleanliness for bart riders. >> there is a lot going on in the bay area this weekend. we'll run it all down for you from sports to music and even a little history. >> good morning. we are looking at a commute that is not bad in the east bay. the south bay and even the peninsula. even santa rosa. boy we're having trouble finding slow traffic. there is some out there. we'll tell you where it is.

southbound. those two bridges the san mateo and dumbarton are getting more crowded but you still have a lot of room to get over to the peninsula. let's bring in steve. we will ease into the weekend here with fog on the coast. even some up in the north bay but inland temps will warm up pretty fast here. 80s and 90s to near 100 degrees. cooler weather looks like it will take over for the weekend. humidity was really high for some. and some of that left over yesterday. these are the average highs for this time of year. santa rosa should be 81. palo alto 78. today they are all above. and 88 degrees. few thunderstorms are erupting over the sierra, central sierra. it looks like they are drifting south. fog san issue for parts of the coast. 50s and 60s on the temps. i expect by next hour the temperatures will warm up. only 12 miles an hour to the

west, southwest. water temps are off. 57 monterey. they continue to go up. that is a sure sign that the coastal temperatures will not be very cool on the lows. the fog looks like it will pick up saturday into sunday and start to lift but today high pressure is sitting right on top of it. sinking air equals that fog not lasting very long. on the coast it could be rather reluctant to burn off. so 60s there. 80s around the bay. 90s to near 100 for some. thick morning fog for some. not for many. sunny and warmer. feels kind of muggy, humid but temperatures 70s and 80s and 90s to near 100s. monday we had just blazing hot temperatures. had the rain on wednesday and now right back up to the warm to hot category. not as hot as monday but it will feel pretty toasty. 80s and 90s for many unless you are right on the water.
