controversy. >> reporter: there is a meeting tonight that is just about to get underway. a chance for everyone here to meet the new principal and to hear about the vision for how to fix the problems that west valley elementary school next year. >> reporter: they were notified one hour after school let out for the summer. everyone at west valley elementary school would be asked to reapply for their jobs. >> i have been physically ill and upset and hurt. >> she had been a teacher for 17 years. >> to have the district come in and basically say every teacher at that school isn't doing their job or isn't doing what they need to do is really insulting. hard for all of us to take. >> the trouble range from a lack of leadership to a lack of communication to low morale.

a mediation session was unsuccessful. >> do a restart for the school and all the adults. >> reporter: the end result is this. every position is considered to be vacant. teachers, staff and janitors will be asked to reapply, while some will get them, others will be transferred. the association thinks it could have been handled differently. >> never happened before. been in the district for 28 years. never seen anything like this happen. the question is, you know, is -- you know -- [ indiscernible ] >> reporter: he is hopeful -- she is hopeful she will get therjob back. >> -- get her job back. >> it will take lot of work from everybody. it is just a lot of trust has been lost. there is a way back. >> reporter: the district is already interviewing people who

want to keep their jobs. all decisions should be made by june 30. there is a bigger plan in place for trying to rebuild the school community over the next year. frank? >> ann rubin, thank you. the ever screen school district reached a settlement with parents who accused administrators. a teacher was sentenced to 75 years in prison for molesting 5 students. the trial between the victim's parents and the district got underway last week. the sides reached a deal leading to a settlement. the district said we believe the settlement will allow the young women impacted by his actions to move forward and deal. an attorney for the man suspected of kidnapping a three- year-old boy from the library says her client suffers from

schizophrenia. he appeared in court this afternoon. his attorney says he thought he knew the boy and thought he was helping the child. his next court appearance is july 16. new developments now involving a roller coaster accident that injured an employee at california's great america. it is closed tonight as investigators try to figure out what happened. witnesses say the employee was trying to retrieve a cell phone when he was hit by the ride. ktvu's allie rasmus is in the news room. you spoke with the head of cal- osha about a investigation? >> reporter: a dual investigation because colotia is in charge offend accidents and making sure all roads are safe. -- rides are safe. >> reporter: 102 feet tall, the frame of the roller coaster is one of the most visible

structures at california's great america. it is also a top attraction. people documented their experience on youtube. the twists and turns top 50 miles per hour. >> really fast. goes upside down twice. [ talking at the same time ] >> reporter: normally the ride thrills thousands a day but not since friday night. >> the attraction is closed. >> reporter: because of a investigation by cal-osha. investigators inspecting the ride, looking into worker safety conditions and the condition of the ride. on friday night a california's great america employee was truck and dragged when he went to retrieve something under the ride. the man suffered a traumatic injury. >> we don't have specifics. we know it is a serious situation. >> reporter: it broke a person's hand. the investigation into how it happened and who is at fault could take months. >> there is going to be

interviews with witnesses. most of the witnesses will be employees. there could be interviews with patrons. a combination of the people part of it and the equipment part of it. >> reporter: on friday investigators were called to a roller coaster in southern california, a 10-year-old girl lost consciousness on the ride and died. investigators concluded it had nothing to do with the ride. >> allie rasmus, thank you. oakland fast food workers are demonstrating in support of workers in new york who are fighting for a higher minimum wage. >> the rally at a mcdonalds coincided with a new york board meeting. they have been pushing for $15 an hour for two years. demonstrators in oakland think

if the minimum wage in new york goes up it could lead to a new standard nationwide. [ indiscernible ] >> oakland's minimum wage rose to $12.25. that is $490 a week before taxes. protesters say an increase to$15 would make a huge difference. lawmakers passed a budget ahead of the dead night. $117.5billion. the vote went along party lines. democrats are hoping governor jerry brown will okay another 749 million in spending. they want child chair, healthcare, and hire education but republicans are reluctant in case revenue doesn't meet projections. democrats believe it will be $3

million higher. republicans say the budget is irresponsible. the governor has 12 days to sign or veto the budget. to the nba finals. the golden state warriors are one win away from a championship. they flew back to cleveland today. if they win game six tomorrow night, they will return home as the new nba champions. ktvu's christien kafton is live at oracle arena where tomorrow night's watch party is sold out. >> reporter: crews were working here this morning to get oracle arena ready for the watch party. it will be ready to go tomorrow night. at the same time the city getting ready too. >> reporter: ktvu was there as the warriors boarded their plane headed for cleveland. fans on their feet sunday night as they won game 5. today crews spent the day cleaning up and preparing for tuesday night at

a car found down an embankment may have been pushed off the cliff. the chp received calls of a car on fire at 9:00 a.m. this morning. they looked inside the car for victims but no one was found. investigators say it is possible that car was stolen and intentionally pushed off the cliff and set on fire. new at 6:00 p.m. the family and friends of a man killed by a police officer are demanding justice for the 24- year-old. the family is angry the district attorney decided not to file charges against had police officer who shot -- the police officer who shot him. they staged a rally today. they had the district attorney to reopen the case and hear

from witness whose dispute the officer's account of what happened. last september he went into liquor store. the owner said he asked him to leave because he appeared to be drunk. once outside the officer said he tried to grab his gun and that is when the officer opened fire. witnesses say he posed no threat to the officers. >> my son was my pride and joy and the most evaluateinable ing in -- most valuable thing in our lives. >> his mother said the only thing her son did wrong was being intox kate in public. he -- intoxicated in public. the murder trial began today in sacramento. he is accused in the stabbing death of his girlfriend last may. he sat in his black suit showing no emotion. family and friends of the

victim could not hold back their tears. this is the first time they have seen photos and video of the crime scene. she was one of six witnesses. she recalled the moment she found her sister laying face down. he pleaded not guilty to the murder charges. california running dry but despite the drought 5 water agencies have been told go save less -- told a save less water. the agencies appealed and got relief. >> reporter: when the state order benicia to cut water use by 28%, one of the largest cuts, the city submitted data showing the efforts were paying off. that convinced the state a 20% cut was more appropriate.

some school kids are kicking off their summer vacation at leg odai camp. a -- legos day camp. to focus on robotics, programming and coding. counselors say they try get the kids to think about the skills employers are looking for and to come up with ideas to help build a better robot.
