good evening, i'm julie hanger. >> i'm frank somerville. there is grief and sadness as the families of those killed arrived to claim their loved ones. ken wayne is now in berkely at a park, just a couple of blocks from that apartment building. >> reporter: frank, the largest of two separate gatherings is actually still underway at martin luther king jr. park here in downtown berkely. it's been going on for over an hour now. it was a large gathering. several hundred people turned out to hear prayers and light candles. most of those on hand tonight were college age, and are no doubt touched by the tragedy that is now shared between two countries. college life, of course, is supposed to be fun, a life awakening experience, and one of learning. but shown by the faces tonight, it's clear, many of these young people have learned something that cannot be taught in a

classroom, that life can be unfair. ♪ [ music ] ♪ >> reporter: almost 200 people gathered at the cathedral of christ the light in oakland this evening to mourn the loss of the six students who died in tuesday's balcony collapse. while those here gathered for solace, sometimes there are no words to ease the suffering. particularly for the parents of those who died. >> they want to see their loved ones. they want to touch them. they want to hold them, and they want to kiss them. >> it's overwhelming to be honest with you. >> reporter: father aiden mcclelland said he met with the parents of the victims. >> the only thing you can do is hold them and tell them everyone is with them. >> reporter: this man said he almost went to the party where the balcony collapsed he was awakened the next morning by

his worried mother. >> they brought her back home. she was a okay. everybody is devastated. >> reporter: ireland is is a small country with a population less than the bay area's. it seems everyone knowing someone affected by the tragedy. >> every irish family has either a child or a nephew or niece who's gone to america on a student visa. so everyone is taking that could be someone i know that was on that balcony that night. >> reporter: this irish sun newspaper was on the flight that arrived today with the parents of the victims. >> they were just in shock. they were all supporting each other and helping each other through the flight. they just didn't know what to say, or don't know what to do. >> reporter: funeral services will be held in roaner park for

ashley donohoe. there will also be services for her cousin, olivia burke, who's body is expected to be returned to ireland, possibly as soon as monday. meantime, this candlelight vigil continues. >> were the parents of any of those killed at either of those vigils tonight that you were aware of? >> reporter: i'm not aware of any that were at the church service. to be honest, it was just not the right time to try to approach to find out what they were there for. just an overwhelming sense of grief here, and we just want to give them their distance. >> i totally get that. investigators are now looking at the possibility that dry rot may be among the factors that contributed to the balcony collapse. a structural engineer we talked to said the wood that supported that balcony was deteriorated, even though water intrusion

seeps observe, engineers say everything has to be tested. they'll also look for code violations, even improper inspections, and results are likely in a few weeks. tonight, we're learning more about those six victims. five of them were just 21 years old. one was 22. noel walking spent the day talking to people at the scene of the collapse. >> reporter: in this block of berkely, the irish flat reins. it's as if the nation draped in orange, white, and green. >> just really tragic because they were so young. >> reporter: is collectively catching its breathe. >> they were just having a good time. it's an awful accident. it could have happened to anybody. >> reporter: six people died and seven were injured when a balcony at the library gardens apartment broke and they fell.

today they collected samples, piling bags of wood on the street below. then, began removing those balconies, so what happened here tuesday can't happen again. >> i'm very sad. i'm not surprised though. >> reporter: laura gomez said she had lived here in 2010. >> they rent to students, and especially during the summer to kids. they put them in the apartment and you know. >> reporter: there are many who felt compelled to visit this place. >> i just feel really. >> reporter: this woman knew owen culligan who just finished his their year. olivia was in her final year. lorcan miller studied medicine. his head master said he was

hugely popular, talented and modest. niccolai schuster had been to ghana to help primary students learn english. eimear walsh was a medical student, described as smart and beautiful with much to offer. >> no matter who it happens to, especially when their young, and they have their whole life ahead of them, it's very tragic. >> reporter: many of the people leaving flowers and cards here did not know the victims, but still feel connected to them. one card read from an irish citizen visiting berkely, may you rest in peace. in berkely, noel walker, ktvu, fox 2 news. there is breaking news tonight out of charleston, south carolina, where just minutes ago, the mayor said that nine people were shot and killed at a historic african american church. and the police chief just minutes ago said this is going to be investigated as a hate crime. a bible study meeting was taking place at the time of the shooting. charleston police have sent out tweets saying they're searching

for a white man, about 21 years old. as the search was going on, police reported a bomb threat and told people to leave the area. the shooting happened at the emmanuel aem church. it describes itself as the oldest african methodist episcopal church in the south. oakland gets ready to host a party. the champs arrived at the oakland airport at about 3:00 this afternoon. >> the team was greeted by members of the war areas front office, and dozens of loyal fans. john sasaki was there as well, soaking it all in. >> reporter: this blue and yellow crowd at oakland airport welcomed home a group of champions. the first person to come off the warriors charter plane was the 2015 league's most valuable player, stephen curry, carrying the nba championship trophy. >> this is amazing. it's nice to be back home with

the trophy. we have to celebrate with our fans. >> reporter: curry shared the love with members of the warriors front office staff who formed the welcoming committee. he said he always knew the team would win the championship. >> who we are. at the end of the day, when you're holding the trophy, all the up and downs of work, we'll remember this for the rest of our lives. >> reporter: fans lined up outside the executive airport hoping for a glimpse of their favorite players. >> oakland needs a lift. we have jesus, but we need some entertainment. this is it. thank you, lord jesus, we won. >> we've still got the best fans in the nba. to be back home it's great. >> reporter: draymond green was another big part of their win. >> i'm on cloud 9. >> reporter: the fans are right there with you, draymond. >> thank you, thank you. >> bob myers a great job.

built. >> reporter: julie, we're along san francisco's waterfront, where the floats are being built to honor the warriors and their fans. the sound of a staple gunfiring away furiously. blue and gold for the warriors. orange for basketballs. building a float for the team is a matter of civic pride. >> i really feel i am a part of the community by being here and helping out. >> reporter: for weeks, workers had been building floats for san francisco's gay pride parade that takes place at the end of month. then the call came last night, confirming that floats are needed first for a warriors victory parade. so some of these floats are doing double duty. >> we just immediately changed directions and started going towards basketball. that will be our focus the next two days. then it will be back to pride right after. >> reporter: allegation revving up for the parade, the company

ride the ducks is providing six cable cars and five duck vehicles. >> i'm a big fan myself. >> reporter: the parades are not new to this company. they provided vehicles for all three of the san francisco giants world series championship celebrations. >> reporter: the operations manager tells me, there will be a driver and a host in each vehicle. and there's no shortage of people who want to work the parade. >> our cell phones haven't stopped from employees. everybody wants to be in this. it's going to be a big show. >> reporter: in oakland, the stage is being set for a rally that follows the parade. barricades are going up. all to celebrate pride and the warriors. >> we expect all of oakland and the whole bay area to come down to the shores of lake merritt, and help celebrate this incredible team. >> reporter: back here in san francisco, these floats have to be completed by midnight tomorrow, then they will be

toed across the bay bridge at 4:00 friday morning, and then a few hours later, the parade is scheduled to start at 10:00. julie, frank? >> it's all coming together. amber, thanks very much. here's a look now at the map of the parade route highlighted in blue. you can see there are three b.a.r.t. stations nearby. parade organizers are telling anyone thinking of coming to use public transit. >> a ktvu crew drove the parade route. it turns at west grand and heads toward lake merritt. the parade then makes its way along the edge of lake merritt right there. ends up with a rally right next to the henry j kaiser convention center. >> fans can start lining up for the parade and rally as early as 5:00 a.m. b.a.r.t. will run trains all day long. ac transit says it will add temporary stops near the parade starting point on all of its downtown oakland lines.

there are new questions tonight about the future of the ridesharing business, uber, and perhaps similar companies as well, this after a ruling from a state commission that enforces labor laws. ken pritchett is live now in san francisco with the decision and how it could have big implementations. >> reporter: this ruling by the california labor commission was a headline grabber today, but it will not affect the ridesharing service for now. it does suggest some of the fight that lies ahead. uber might as well stand for ubiquitous. on just about every corner on market street during rush hour, we saw cars displaying uber's black and white u. how are these drivers defined?

the answer is important. >> are they independent contractors? which case the responsibility is minimal, or are they truly employees? which there's a lot more in terms of insurance, expenses, and labor laws. >> reporter: on uber drivers california's labor commission muddied the waters even more, meaning a driver who filed a claim against uber was an employee, not an independent contractor. in a statement said, the california labor commission's ruling is non-binding, and applies to a single driver. it is true that in 2012, a labor commission defined another uber driver as an independent contractor. >> what's important about the commission ruling is not its legal significance. that applies to one person. is it puts it on a much broader public agenda. >> reporter: saying the so- called sharing economy has become big business and that

40% of employees could be freelancers by 2020. the ultimate status of uber drivers likely to be decided by the courts. >> how this plays out will effect many workers. >> reporter: this labor commission ruling does not set any kind of legal precedent, but this question is headed to the courts. uber faces a class action lawsuit from a labor attorney who is seeking to classify its drivers as employees. >> ken pritchett tonight in san francisco. the federal trade comission hit at&t with a record $100 million fine today. the fcc says at&t offered customers unlimited data, but would then slow their internet speeds after they slowed a certainly amount. it's not unusual for phone companies to slow speeds on a network as a way to manage congestion, but once that congestion ends speeds return to normal. the fcc says at&t would slow

the speeds until the customers next billing cycle. at&t says it's planning to fight the fine. a state supreme court handed a legal victory today to thousands of retired san francisco employees. they handled a lower court ruling. those increases had been eliminated by proposition c passed by voters back in 2011. the ruling affects 23,000 former employees, who have retired since 1996. a judge has tentatively ruled that allen pao has to pay $276,000 in legal fees to her former employer. this comes after pao lost her gender discrimination and retaliation case against the venture capital firm. the judge splits the difference. pao is now appealing the original suit. nbc has reported on a plan to replace news anchor brian williams. the "new york times" is reporting that williams will

not return to the nbc anchor desk, but will instead take a new role at msnbc. the network is expected to name phil in anchor lester holt as brian williams's permanent replacement. nbc suspended brian williams for exaggerating his role in a helicopter attack in iraq. tropical depression bill is now moving north out of texas and oklahoma after dropping 4 to 8 inches of rain in places. the weakening storm is on its way now to the midwest and could reach the northeast by the weekend. the storm caused rough surf in parts of texas. it's expected to move across some of the same places that were hit by deadly floods over memorial day weekend. >> that's the problem. a lot of rain has already fallen on central texas. historical rainfall. now they're continuing to get 6 to 12 inches in some places.

rivers are high, ground is saturated. there's going to be a lot of problems over the next 36 to 48 hours. also, as this system right rides over the top, it's going to cause problems there as well. a lot of moisture. it's a lot of rain. texas is getting hammered. you'll be reading more, and hearing more about texas over the next couple of days. temperatures today came up, temperaturings tomorrow go down. just a slight amount, the hot spots tomorrow, today they were in the mid-90s. there's the warmth in the central valley. tomorrow morning, when you wake up, the fog is going to be kind of out there into the oakland, hayward area. it should burn off a little more slowly than today. a little more of an onshore flow. that pushes the warmth further east. tomorrow, slightly cooler. but we're kind of splitting hairs for your thursday. it's not going 94, or 95. it will be 88, 89, 90.

samsung is responding to reports that millions of its samsung galaxy phones are vulnerable to hackers. researchers at a cyber security company called now secure say there is a flaw in the keyboard

software that allows hackers to gain access. they say that could pose a big threat to company executives and government employees. the national security administration just approved galaxy phones for its employees. the researchers say they informed samsung several months ago, but nothing was done. samsung now says it expects to have a patch ready in a few days. the defect has been blamed for 7 deaths and 100 injuries worldwide. the national highway traffic safety administration says the list of affected cars is now complete and that all the vin numbers of the cars have been loaded into the searchable database. some 34 million vehicles made by 11 different car manufacturers are part of that recall. at ktvu.com, we posted a link to the site where you can see if your car is on the list. you'll find it under our web

links section. starbucks announced it is closing all of its lava lounge cafes in the bay area. as azenith smith reports, some employees were stunned by the news. >> reporter: nestled in a prime location, known for its french inspired decor, a favorite for locals. >> i was just telling somebody when i had a meeting over here, that it's really awesome that you know, there are places like this. >> reporter: but come three months, this place will be gone. that's because owner, starbucks has announced its closing all 23 locations all in the bay area and two manufacturing facilities. saying they're not sustainable for the company's long term growth. this comes as the coffee giant has seen strong food sales. >> it's popular. it's always full. >> they want to close the restaurants? that's too bad. i hope not.

>> what i always wanted to do in this country. >> reporter: starbucks bought the chain for $100 million to spruce up its menu. what's unclear is what will happen to the employees. according to a statement on the starbucks website, all partners who work in these locations are being treated with the utmost care. where possible, starbucks will find new locations at starbucks stores in the area. patrons hope starbucks will reconsider. but if not, they hope this stays local. >> we have an issue of retail, sometimes displaced by office. hopefully that won't happen here. maybe it will be an opportunity for another hopefully local company to start a cafe on university avenue. that would be the best outcome. >> reporter: an employee tells me this place will close on september 25. it's unclear what will take its

be tough. consider this a warning. if you take a look behind me, they are preparing for san francisco's big city hall centennial celebration. that will be on friday and they're practicing a light show, that could be just spectacular, at the same time, there is the symphony, and the u.s. mayor's mayor's conference and president obama visiting on friday. crews are working fast. setting the stage for friday's big show. the centennial celebration for san francisco's city hall will start four hours after the warriors big nba championship celebration ends on the other side of the bay. meaning a swift set up for this contractor who is handling both. >> for the warriors, we have some camera platforms that will be setting up in oakland. it's been exciting. very tiring as well. we've been working very long hours. >> reporter: long hours for crews, and likely long lines of

celebration under the rotunda. >> i will probably avoid driving if possible. >> reporter: police are recommending people take public transportation. back here live, you can see the top of city hall, and warriors fans i have learned that they do intend to have a tribute to the nba champions as part of friday's light show. >> that just looks like it's going to be spectacular, and the rotunda there, it's just beautiful. thank you. the national park service has chosen a new company to run hotels, restaurants, and other concessions at yosemite national park. park officials say aramark has days to accept the deal. the change would happen next year. a parks spokesman says visitors shouldn't expect to see changes. they would run the shops and camp grounds. on wall start, stocks were up today on news from the

federal reserve. the dow gained 31. the nasdaq was up 9, and the s & p 500 added 4. the fed indicated that when it decides to raise interest rates, it will do so at a gradual pace. fit bit, which makes a fitness tracking device set its price at $20 a share. that's up from the 16 to $17 per share they were estimating earlier this week. tomorrow, trading begins on the new york stock exchange. it is estimated that the company is worth more than $4 billion. a bay area non-profit that uses animals to help people is now asking for some help of its own. jasper rage farm serves portola valley. the animals are having to commute from gilroy. >> reporter: the goal is to

bring animals together with the people who need them the most. sometimes sick children. sometimes set rans. today a group from the homeless shelter. >> where i used to live there wasn't that many animals. >> reporter: here there are bunnies, goats, horses and more. >> it made me feel happy and exciting. >> reporter: they serve 1500 children and adults each year, there's even a wait list. recently they arranged to move their facility here. >> this is our beautiful new home. >> reporter: they raised money, got the necessary permits, then discovered a major problem. to grade and excavate the land wouldn't cost $25,000 as they had budgeted. it would cost $200,000. >> we were stunned, and horrified. but it felt just like one more

the new careryon bag restrictions announced last week may not be enacted after all. american, delta, and united airlines were already against the idea and two senators have suggested it was a money grab by the airlines to generate checked baggage fees. federal transit authorities are orders nationwide transfers. this follows an accident involving the washington, d.c. metro system last january where a woman died. an investigation found ventilation fans didn't work properly, and passengers were overcome by smoke. the new inspections involved 25 transit systems and must be completed by august 31. ktvu contacted both b.a.r.t. and san francisco muni. they told us they're working to find out what they have to do. in palo alto, police are looking for three men who broke into a pharmacy today. a witness reported seeing the

men running from the maxy mart pharmacy about 3:30 this morning. police searched the area with the help of a police dog, but didn't find them. they say the men smashed through the door and took dozens of bottles of prescription medication. detectives are trying to determine if it's connected to a similar one at the same pharmacy. the u.s. treasury department says it plans to put a woman on the $10 bill, but which woman remains a mystery. lance lou says he will seek public input over the summer on the appropriate female historical figure to receive that honor. by law, no living person may appear on the bill. alexander hamilton will either be on the reserve side, or a separate series of bills. it will be the first time a woman has been on paper currency, since martha washington was on a silver certificate from 1891 to 1896. matt velon was rounding up

shopping carts, he found a bag, and when he picked it up, everything fell out, including a big stack of money. he says he brought it back to his boss. he didn't pay a lot of attention to it, but later learned there was actually $15,000 in that bag. a woman had the money to buy a car for her son. she came back to the store to thank them for being so honest. >> they worked hard for that. why are you going to take that from them? because i've lost wallets before. >> did you ever get it back? >> no, i never did. >> his proud dad boasted on facebook about what his son did. a man reached out to offer matt another job. she said the store is always looking for honorable people like matt. we were there as he was filling out his application today. way to go, matt. the warriors amazing run is over, but there is still plenty of baseball to talk about.

save water? >> reporter: she's doing her part with a system called laundry to landscape. she and a group of 20 volunteers from the berkely ecology center built it themselves in a day. a valve diverts the water to a pipe in her yard. connected to a drip irrigation system. >> got a little spigot that you can control the flow here. >> reporter: she did have it to switch to a bio degradable laundry detergent but said overall it was easy. she estimates the whole thing cost her about $500. >> they turn this handle off to sewer. >> an ecco design bill based out of oakland. >> reporter: his company installs advanced gray water irrigation systems that go from showers and sinks to the garden. >> people want to know what they can do at their home.
