for 21-year-old dylann roof of lexington, south carolina. they arrested him during a traffic stop in shelby, about 220 miles north of charleston. >> the arrest of this awful man is important for all of us in this community and in our country to begin the necessary process of our healing together. >> reporter: police say the suspect opened fire inside the emanuel ame church in downtown charleston. officials say he started shooting after attending a prayer meeting. charleston is widely known as the holy city for all of the churches. >> the department of justice has opened a hate crime investigation into the shooting incident. >> reporter: the shooting is prompting prayer vig yiles throughout the state and on -- vigil throughout the state and on capitol hill and president obama is renewing his calls for gun control. >> at some point we as a country will have to reckon

ktvu app. fairfield police say a man was critically burned while trying to make homemade fireworks alongside his garage. [sound of explosion] >> the devices were so dangerous, authorities say they had to take them from the home on catlin to debt tate -- to a remote area to detonate them. >> the initial explosion happened at the home of anthony stewart. police say the blast could have killed him. there is a trail of blood from the garage to a neighbor's yard. >> there was a really large blast. it blew our side garage door dead bolted in. i was out in the garage. there was smoke and sulfur and i ran in and grabbed my daughter. we came out front.

called 911 and my neighbor was on the front lawn rolling and because he thought he was on fire. >> stewart suffered life- threatening burns all over his body and is now at a sacramento burn unit. investigators say the 42-year- old was manufacturing fireworks for the 4th of july holiday. he's the father of two young boys who were not home at the time of the blast. no one else was injured. july 4th is less than three weeks away and the city of san jose is looking to crack down on illegal fireworks. ktvu's reporter is live in san jose to explain how the city plans to beef up enforcement. good afternoon. >> reporter: good afternoon, tori. i don't know if you remember last year, here in the city of san jose, around july 4th, a man had to get his hand amputated and also a 10-year- old boy was severely injured after they both set off illegal fireworks, safety of paramount concern but also the drought. that's why city leaders want to expand a current ordinance and alou park rangers and community

-- allow park rangers and community officers the ability to issue fines for those who sell the city fireworks. the city does not allow fireworks. last june and july, the city received 2,000 calls surrounding fireworks going off. police and fire departments are strained. neighbors are fed up. >> it's been getting worse every year. it starts in early june and goes through at least the middle of july. every night these huge boom, boom. >> people that go ahead and do this obviously have no concern for anybody else, their neighbors, their children, anybody's health and safety and that's what aggravates me. >> reporter: it's even more critical this year because of the severe trout. the dry and the hot conditions. when projectiles shoot off, embers come down on a tree and a house roof, easily causing a fire. this new enforcement won't go into effect before july 4th.

but city leaders want to adopt it -- they still need to, rather, but they want too get the word out that -- to get the word out that fireworks are dangerous. anyone caught with fireworks could face fines up to $2,000 even jail time. they mentioned there are some free shows here in san jose for july 4th. they are at discovery meadow, a show at municipal stadium and almaden lake park has one, too. tori? >> thank you. dozens of cities around the country including here in the bay area have gun fire detection technology. now an east bay high school is the first school in the nation to eninstall it -- to install it. a couple of hours ago, newark high school unveiled this to alert police if there is an active shooter attack. police say the shot spotter system will help locate the shooter and also get medical aid to anyone who may be

injured in a shooting much faster. the families of the irish students killed in tuesday's berkeley balcony collapse are now in the bay area to claim the bodies of their loved ones. funeral services for some of the six victims are scheduled for this weekend. hundred of people turned out last night for an emotional candlelight vigil at the martin luther king, junior civic center park. most mowners were close in age to the victim -- mourners were close in age to the victims. ♪ >> just hours earlier 200 people attended a mass at cathedral of christ the light in oakland. >> they want to see their loved ones, they want to touch them. they want to hold them and they want to kiss them. >> the city of berkeley is working with the irish consulate to provide comfort and aid to the victims' families. a funeral will be held on saturday for 22-year-old ashley

donahoe in rohnert park. there will be services for her cousin, olivia burk, whose body will be returned to ireland possibly as soon as monday. the investigation into the collapse is now focused on dry rot. a structural engineer says the wood that supported the balcony had deteriorated. inspectors are looking into other possibilities, including test prob -- pest problems, poor workmanship, code violations and whether the balcony was overloaded. results could be released in a few weeks. seven people were hurt in the balcony collapse and three of them are listed in critical condition with life-threatening injuries. a stabbing at a cambodian monty story has left a -- montessori has left a buddhist monk injured. it happened at the cambodian development complex on douglas avenue. the 66-year-old victim was stabbed numerous times in the head and body with kitchen

knives. officials say he was the head at the montessori. the suspect was seen several blocks away with blood on his clothes. there are new details on the criminals who escaped from the new york prison. 13 days later, richard matt and david sweat could be anywhere. officials released time progress photos showing what the two may look like now as the search includes border crossings to canada and mexico. their alleged accomplice, joyce mitchell, claimed the convicts planned to kill her husband who also works at the prison after using her as a getaway driver. she says she backed out of the plan. a u.s. secret service agent is set to need guilty to stealing bitcoin from the silk road onsite. she's accused of stealing $820,000 of the digital

currency. according to court papers, he's expected to make the plea deal later this year. a cybercrime agent with the irs in oakland uncovered the theft during the investigation into the silk road site and its king pin, ross ulbrich. the house revived president obama's embattled trade bill after failing to get a formal vote on the measure last week. the house passed it today. the legislation will give the president and future chief authorities what it can ratify but cannot change. the senate has yet to weigh in. , this puts republicans in the strange position of supporting president obama. democrats worry it could result in job losses. >> this has been a long standing difference in the democratic party having nothing to do with the president of the united states and everything to do with ours abouts, the

also got some beer from her bet with ohio's other senator rob portman. floatmakers are busy working around the clock to get ready for the parade. the san francisco company was originally building floats for the city's gay pride parade at the end of the month. but after tuesday night's big win in cleveland, they got the call to start working immediately on floats for the warriors' victory parade in oakland. >> we just immediately changed directions and started going toward basketball and that will be the main focus for the next two days. then we'll be back to pride. >> ride the ducks is providing six cable cars and five duck vehicles. >> the floats have to be completed by midnight tonight and will then be towed across the bay bridge at 4:00 a.m. tomorrow. and the parade starts at 10:00 a.m. but fans can start lining up at 5:00. b.a.r.t. plans to run all day long and there will be stops on all of

the downtown oakland lines. if you can't make it to the parade, stay with ktvu and ktvu.com. our live coverage starts at 9:00 a.m. right after "mornings on 2." you can also live stream it on ktvu.com and our ktvu app. the warriors' parade and celebration just the first of many big events happening tomorrow. that actually could pose challenges for people trying to get around the bay area. in san francisco, crews are setting up a stage at civic center plaza. it's for city hall's centennial celebration which starts four hours after the warriors' victory parade ends in oakland. 12,000 people are expected for the centennial event which will feature music, food trucks and family-friendly attractions. >> everything from a ferris wheel to jugglers and dancers going on and at 9:30, we'll unveil a fabulous lighting show. >> friday is the u.s. mayors' conference at the union square hilton in san francisco.

277 -- 277 mayors from all over the country will attend. president obama will arrive tomorrow afternoon which could lead to more closures. despite objections from civic groups, the oakland city council has approved a controversial development project. the project has prompted several demonstrations including one that shut down a council meeting last month. but councilmembers still approve the deal to sell an achier of public land for $5 million to a developer who plans to build a luxury apartment tower near lake merritt. the developer will also contribute $8 million to the city's affordable housing fund. critics say it should go to more affordable housing use. one wildfire is in san diego burning about 15 miles northwest of el cajon. you are looking at video of it here. it has now burned 1700 acres --

170 acres. and is 30% contained and another fire in san bernardino. at last check, 1500 acres have been bushed and only 5% containment. steve, a look at the weather, a little cooler this morning. what's it like now? >> it's still running cooler, anywhere from 2 to 6 degrees. inland temps, they do have a westerly breeze behind that. low clouds and fog kind of developed rapidly after 5:00 a.m. to 8:00. mix of sun or fog. tomorrow morning, should be just fine. for those of you early arrivals, wear a jacket. it will probably be in the 50s, 54, 55 by the time the parade starts, low clouds should start to burn off. sunny and mostly sunny by noon or 1:00. temperatures in the 60s. our weak system to the north, that little guy, that little guy, took that fog bank and

picked it up. that's also usual -- ushered in a westerly breeze. livermore at 81. 81 concord, 76 fairfield. os for san jose. also 70s for santa rosa and then 60s for others. a 7 brisk degrees in san francisco. getting a lot of complaints on the june gloom and how cold it is. temperatures running compared to 24 hours ago, about 2, 4, 5 degrees. inland temps are still warm. you can thank or blame that west at 2. had gusts to 31, 33 at travis. west at concord. west at oakland, south at napa, south at santa rosa. that's a cooler direction for them. northwest at snowe, northwest, north, northwest and west 17 gust at livermore. that will do it every time. water temps came down at bodega bay in the last 24 hours. 1 degree to 50. san francisco buoy at 52. that helps the cold -- that helps the temperatures.

smokein' hot in the desert. 112. 110 in phoenix. 55 in arcata. it's really hot in atlanta. but the big news continues to be the remains of what was once tropical storm bill, now tropical depression, still slowly moving through oklahoma. also extending out to arkansas, also missouri and on the move. this complex literally fell apart when it ran into a lot of that energy. there is a lot going on across the country. you can see the combination of the two. some hefty rain totals from oklahoma to texas. some areas getting over a foot of rain. for us, we have the fog. high pressure will nose in friday into saturday for a little warmup. that morning fog, still kind of holding on a little bit. sunny, breezy. looks cooler for most. 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s. that's a june pattern for sure. temperatures are on the coast and bay. a little bit below average. those inland near average to slightly above. but not as warm as yesterday. we had mid-90s for many but it

stocks sharply higher in afternoon trading on wall street on the latest corporate news and greece's finance chief said there's still time to reach a bailout deal with creditors ahead of the june 30th deadline. the dow is up 206 and the nasdaq today surpassed the 15- year all-time high set during the dotcom bubble. right now it's up 70 and the s&p is up 22. a san francisco company is the newest company on the new york stock exchange. stock in fitbit. the popular tracking deeg vice is up 50% right now trading at $30 a share. it's very popular with investors because fitbit is one of the few companies going public so far this year.
