parishioners for an hour before he started shooting people. >> reporter: a facebook photo shows roof showing flags from two apartide government. and another shows him with a confederate flag and a sign that says, confederate america. among the dead the reverend clementa pinckney, also a senator who knew president obama. >> reporter: three other people who were there survived. one told reporters that the gunman told her i will spare you if you can tell them what

happened. tonight even with this arrest it's unclear exactly why this particular church was targeted. >> just thinking that he sat there for a whole hour before he did what he did it's just terrible. jana, thank you. we spoke with bay area religious leaders today. they said this shooting is a reminder that racism is alive in america. ktvu's john sasaki tells us they're also condemning the easy access to weapons. >> reporter: at san francisco's third baptist church, reverend brown is the pastor. >> bigotry, racism, it's cheaper to be peaceful, to be loving. >> reporter: brown who is also the president of the naacp held a news conference with two rabbis from temple emanuel to call for change including greater gun control. >> we have a problem and i acknowledge we have power. i acknowledge we have guns and

point. he says there will be no metal detectors because he wants people to feel welcomed. stay with ktvu for continuing coverage. and when we're not on the air turn to ktuv.com. the fire was reported around 4:30 this afternoon at a four unit complex along maldonado road. the battalion chief says when he arrived the fire was so intense he quickly called a second alarm. >> the fire was pretty much ahead of us by the time we got here. it was fully involved. >> reporter: both officials say the fire displayed 10 or 11 residents who are now getting help from the red cross. there's no word yet on the victim's identity or the cause of this fire. a wildfire kicked up in san joaquin county destroys three

homes and leaving one person injured. the fire broke out in the farming community of del rio on the main road between bay area and yosemite. about 122 acres ended up burning. here you can see video of at least one of those houses on fire. the fire started around 2:00 and mainly burned in trees. about 100 people had to be evacuated. sheriff deputies started escorting those people back home within the last hour. wildfire is spreading near big bear lake. it's now burned 10,000 acres most of it timber. children from a summer camp have been evacuated. a 74-year-old backpacker had to be rescued. the pacific crest trail is also closed in that area. today the city of berkeley released thousands of pages of do you means about the deck

that collapsed earlier this week and killed six people. those who have reviewed those documents say the blueprints detailed the balcony was built to hold nearly 10,000 pounds. far more than the weight of the 16 people that were standing on it. engineers say it looks like the wood supporting the balcony had rotted and gave way. these documents will likely help determine who will be held legally responsible. about $150,000 has been donated to groups helping the victims and their families. the american ireland fund donated $100,000. the tragedy fund on go fund me has raised another six now. -- 6,000. a mass will be held this saturday in ireland by the arch bishop. police say this entire

crime took less than 60 seconds. the suspects hit the sun glass hut. investigators are hoping video will lead to some arrests here. >> reporter: that's right, police called this a brazen crime and as you said it happened at the sun glass hut store just inside the 19th avenue entrance. >> police say this surveillance video shows two thieves helping themselves to thousands of dollars in sunglasses. >> they're casing the join. they're looking arnold. she's checking out her wig. >> reporter: one of these starteds looking at sunglasses then put as -- puts pair in her purse. moments later she comes back and drops another pair in her bag. the women take advantage when the worker is helping another customer. >> that's another pair of

green hosted a party tonight. these are pictures near fisherman's wharf in san francisco. the eventis being billed at the warriors championship party and it's just getting started at this hour. they're also promising to include a few special guests. the celebration moves to the streets of oakland with a parade and rally to publicly honor the new nba champions. >> amber lee is live with some advice on how best to get there. >> reporter: julie lots of people here taking it all in behind me. jumbo screens to accommodate the crowd. earlier we went through the parade rout to find out what we can expect tomorrow. on broadway, city workers are on overtime sprucing up the parade route, smoothing the pavement so spectators don't trip and fall. many told us they're able to take a few hours off from work

fire workers to respond. they will give community service officers the power to issue citations and fines would be as high as $1,000. pyrotechnics should be handled by professionals and not residents who don't understand how dangerous these items can be. >> reporter: they're especially concerned because of the drought and the risk of fire. >> if the ordinance is approved by the city council it would still not take effect though until after july 4th. there's a new twist at a staffing --dispute at a elementary school. a decision that's left teachers and parents upset. >> reporter: at west valley elementary teachers came to clean out their classrooms and to commiserate. next year none of them will

return. >> this has been my community, my family. and to see it break up like this, it just -- there's no words to really explain that. >> reporter: at a meeting monday, parents were told about a year's worth of tension at the school about problems with leadership and unity. administrators said the fix would be having all teachers reapply for their jobs. those who showed commitment would get them back. last night that changed. >> i called the district on wednesday and told them look we need to be honest, the teachers aren't going to have an opportunity to come back to west valley. >> reporter: the teachers union, the cupertino's educational association were overseeing process set up by the district that would not be fair for everyone. >> some would have gotten their jobs back, others would not. how would that be fair for one person as opposed to another. it would not be equitable.

the shooting occurred around 1:30 right in front of the pak & save. witnesses say two men in a black lexus and gold her say tkaoes jumped out of their cars, started shooting then jumped back in their cars and spaed off -- gold mercedes jumped out of their cars. incredibly no one was hurt. police are now trying to identify the gunman from surveillance tape. a bay area school is doing something that no other high school any where in the country has ever done before. newark memorial hospital has installed a shot spotter system. the principal here says it's not about the school being unsafe, it's about being prepared if there's an emergency. >> god forbid that this technology would have to be deployed but we believe that

here, right. >> reporter: well frank. there were 34 children who complained of symptoms you would expect to see with exposure to a chemical such as chlorine. but many questions remain about just how this happened. >> there are several pools at the antioch water park but only one where children complained of feeling sick. this shallow pool in the corner of the park. >> many complained to us of minor respiratory disstress. >> reporter: these are images taken just after the first responders arrived. >> we found out the symptoms consistent with what happened at the pool. >> reporter: samples of the pool water did show an elevated level of chlorine above the

state's standards. >> environmental health has closed the pool because it does not qualify with regulatory standards. >> reporter: michelle demagio says 10 parts per million is the limit for a pool like this. could three parts per million explain why 13 children became sick to the level of this response. >> right now we think, no. >> reporter: the county hazmat team did finds compliance issues in the storage area of this facility where pool chemicals are stored but they say that did not cause this problem. so the investigation goes on. >> ken, what about all those kids? are they okay? >> reporter: according to the

fire department, all of the kids suffered minor respiratory issues. so all of the kids their symptoms were minor and all of them apparently are okay. >> ken pritchett in antioch tonight, ken, thank you. >> reporter: police arrested two people accused of stealing electronics and other items from south bay schools. they tracked down andrew holloway and nicole stafford after a car was seen rolling away from the school. when they searched it they say they found stolen laptops, electronics, e cards and equipment. a legal claim was filed today against the city of salinas for a police beating that was caught on video. the video shows officers using batons on 28-year-old jose velasco on june 5th. velasco was jumping on cars and had attacked his mother.

she claims he is mentally ill. he was found to have meth in his system. the salinas city attorney rejected it which sets the stage for a lawsuit. the california highway patrol is one step closer toward equipping it officers with body cam ration. the state budget approved this week in -- body cameras. the state budget approved this week approves the use of body cam -- cameras. the chp plans to draft a policy by january 1st and following that have 200 officers begin testing the cameras. there's some progress to report tonight in the clean up of that oil spill in santa barbara county. state park officials say near by el capitan state beach is set to reopen a week from tomorrow. refugio will be closed until at least july 9th.

a ruptured pipeline spined up to 100,000-gallons of crude oil last month. about 21,000-gallons made it to the ocean. the north side of dolores park finally reopened today after major renovations and it didn't take long for the park to fill with people sprawled all around the park. the north side has new tennis courts, restrooms, a dog park and more accessible path ways. construction crews are now moving to the other side. park officials say that improvement project is expected to be done by late next year. there are a number of fun events in the bay area this weekend. here's mike mibach with our weekends watch. >> summer solstice is knocking on the door. the longest day of the year is this weekend. i'm all about this one. set your clocks early it's time for the sonoma county hot air

sentenced alana to 131 years to life for prison for the murder of his former girlfriend. the judge said he had never seen a mountain of evidence toward someone's health. he said alana created a mountain of lies on the stand. the two had a daughter together. she is now a teenager and living with koch's sister. six inmates filed a lawsuit. the inmates say they're confined alone without windows up to 24 hours a day. they say the isolation is cruel punishment. they also say they're deprived of sun, sleep and recreation. for the seconds year in a row the california highway patrol says vehicle thefts are down.

the statewide number declined by about 7% last year. the total was 160,000. five bay area counties, alameda, marin, san francisco, san mateo and santa clara accounted for 20% of those thefts statewide. the chp says about 90% of all stolen vehicles are eventually recovered. dianne feinstein introduced a bill that would regulate drones to be flown in california. it would allow drones to be banned near airports and over public events. according to the faa there have been nearly 2,000 incidents where airline pilots saw drones over a nine month period that includes one last weekend over oakland. the airlines pilot association supports the drone bill. the fcc today voted against allowing bankers, telemarketers

bay area. >> >> 4,000-pound mammoths tredging across san francisco, yes it happened. >> we found many of these larger ice age mammoth creatures. >> reporter: how do we know all of this? fossils found at construction sites throughout the city. perhaps the oldest were discovered right here at the site of the new transbay terminal. the human remains were found last year where this mammoth tooth was located. the tooth is estimated to be 12 to 18,000 years old. >> the human remains were found in proximity to the tooth that is potentially very old. and represent very early habitation of the bay area. >> reporter: but it's not likely we will learn more about who was buried below 16th howard street, because they were given to the most likely
