>> good to be here. let's talk about our weather and traffic and, steve, how does it look so far? >> it looks okay. a lot more sunshine which is what gasia said to me. >> that's right. >> good morning, sunshine. >> we have more sunshine. >> we'll get to the weather. the fog is patchy. it will burn off. everyone gets in on the one. sunrise over the big city. we have patchy low clouds, yesterday. santa cruz was dealing a lot of fog. that's not the case today. there's some. the sky over wrig little field last night -- wrigley field last night, it was all kind of crazy. very unstable severe weather with that. temperature difference, moisture difference and wind shear difference, they had really bad weather from illinois into michigan. for us, it will be sunny for everybody. 50s on the temps. had a few 40s. including santa rosa and half moon bay. now it's all 50s. far less than the delta breeze.

yesterday it was a lot stronger. today it's not. we're bitting for the high to build in. monsoon moisture will get caught around that and also this low will play into our weather. if the high clouds don't show up pie thursday, they will be here by -- by thursday, they will be here by friday. for us, sunny, 80s, 90s. 60s by the coast and bay. sal, good morning. the summer pattern, you notice it's kicked in. it's beginning to creep in, steve. good morning to you. i think people will appreciate it. it's not completely light but i think by next week it will be especially as we approach the 4th of july holiday which is coming up. where has time gone? this is interstate 80 northbound and southbound. it looks pretty good as you drive past the oakland coliseum. usually this commute doesn't get slow until 8:00 or so. right now at the bay bridge toll plaza, there is some slow traffic. i don't want to oversell. 15 minutes getting onto the bridge. we also have slow traffic on

the nimitz freeway this morning as you drive south, from about 238. northbound traffic is slow. but we've noticed some commutes are better than normal. by a little, i mean a little. not a lot. san jose, for example, we have some slow traffic on 101. usually it's solid. this time it's pockets from the capitol expressway up into sunnyvale. 7:03. a vallejo man continues to recover after getting burned from a house fire early this morning. brian flores live in front of the home. brian, at this point, do we know what started the fire? >> reporter: preliminarily, we do, gasia. quite frankly, the person inside this garage is luck -- is lucky to be alive. he suffered burns. a lot of debris taken out as firefighters tried to put the fire out. this is on the 400 block of via vista. you see a lot of damage inside the garage as well as to a car inside there as well. that car has a lot to do with what happened here.

as we go to video from earlier, the fire started before 12:30. the flames got so intense according to firefighters that they had to cut holes on the roof. the preliminary investigation on the investigation at this point, is that this man was -- this was some type of welding accident. we're hearth the man inside the garage -- hearing the man inside the garage was welding a gas tank on a car when the fire started. sources say the man did have second and third-degree burns to his torso. he also lives at the home with his wife and cat and they were able to get out of the home safely. we understand they are doing okay. but as we take it back out here live, you can see heavy damage again to this home. the fire reached two alarms, came dangerously close to homes. but luckily vallejo firefighters were able to keep it to this one home. again, one man suffered third and second-degree burns. the other person, a woman living here, is expected to be okay. deputies in the city of sonoma remain on the scene of

what's only being described as a suspicious death. fire crews discovered the body of a victim inside a home off pueblo avenue off napa road before midnight. there were several other people at the home at the time. no one is in custody and officers are not looking for any suspects. funerals will be held in dublin, ireland for four of the students who died in the balcony collapse in berkeley. six students were killed when the fourth-floor balcony collapsed at the library gardens apartments. seven other students are still in the hospital. investigators are now trying to determine if dry rot caused that balcony to collapse. our time is to 7:0 a. 0en friday, president obama will -- on friday, president obama will fly to charleston, south carolina and honor the victims of that mass shootings. he will deliver the eulogy for reverend clementa pinckney. the prod and first lady actually got to know the pastor

-- president and the firstly day got to know the pastor when he was a candidate for the presidential campaign. >> today we're here to say it's time to move the flag from the capitol grounds. [ cheers and applause ] >> that's south carolina's governor joining the call to remove the confederate flag. the 21-year-old accused in that church shooting posed with the confederate flag. this was prompted a renewed effort to move the flag which many see has a symbol of white supremacy. removing this flag will require a two-third vote in the legislature. even the white house is weighing in. >> the president did talk about this as long ago as six, seven years ago where he shared his view that the confederate flag should be taken down and placed in the museum where it belongs. >> now, the confederate battle

flag flew over the south carolina capitol for 39 years. before there was a compromise in the year 2000 that moved it to a war memorial on the capitol grounds. now several stores are refusing to sell any items featuring the confederate flag. walmart, sears and kmart won't allow items with the confederate flag on their shelves or on their company websites. the republican house speaker in mississippi says the confederate banner in that state's flag also needs to be removed. in tennessee, some officials want to remove a bus of nathan forest. more and more people are turning to uber and lyft instead of traditional taxis. that may force san jose leaders to change policy at mineta airport. janine de la vega is live at the airplane. i i can imagine taxi drivers are feeling pretty threatened. >> reporter: yes, they are. you know, airport officials

know that these rise sharing companies have been a game changer. we were talking to a cabdriver when an uber driver pulled up to the curb and the cabdriver was not happy. today, the san jose city council is set to vote on whether to permit uber lyft and others to pick up passengers here. these type of companies have grown in popularity and are seen as a cheaper alternative compared to taxis. last year, sfo permitted uber and other companies to operate there. the proposal has caused a big upset among cab drivers and they are concerns that they are gonna go out of business because of the exe ticks. we spoke with both an uber and cabdriver. here's what they had to say. >> they don't have -- we pay for the city -- we do the

inspection. have all of the insurance. pay all of that. they didn't pay anything. that's why they got rich. they rip off from the driver. >> they need to let the customers decide for themselves what's good for the consumer, you know, for the customers here. it should be a free choice, who should take uber and who should take a taxi. >> reporter: cabdrivers do face stricter regulation and pay higher fees to operate because they run a dispatch center out of the airport. if the council approved the services, drivers from ride sharing companies would need to go through fingerprinting, background checks, vehicle inspections and pay fees. it would be a one-year pilot program because the city wants to evaluate safety and the number of accidents that may occur. gasia? >> all right, janine. thank you. pilots who fly for low-cost airline alee juent air say they are sacrificing safety by saving money. they said there were 38

potentially dangerous incidents the first three months of this year. allegiant said their safety record is the best in the nation. they say this list is an attempt to worry passengers and pressure the airlines. contract talks between the pilots and the airline have stalled. it could be biking or walking across the san rafael bridge in a couple of years. a $74 million project to add an extra commuter line and a bike lane is moving forward. the shoulder in the eastbound direction would be converted into an extra lane during the evening commute hours to help ease traffic. the shoulder would be converted in the westbound direction into a path for people walking or biking. construction could start as early as next summer. it's expected to be complete by summer of 2017. 7:10. new this morning, a big earthquake in japan. it hit in the pacific ocean south of japan. the usgs said it was a 6.3 quake. it hit about two hours ago. the epicenter is about 550 miles south of tokyo in an area

of frequent seismic activity. authorities say right now there's no threat of a tsunami from that pretty big earthquake. sparks fly at last night's oakland city council meeting. [chanting] >> hundreds showed up. coming up at 7:30, we'll tell you what led to some of them being locked out. but first wildfire season heating up here in california. several fires burning around the state. the biggest one a couple of hundred miles away. we'll tell you why firefighters say the worst is yet to come. getting word of some slow traffic now in the east bay as we look at some of these commutes. it's getting busier on highway 24. also getting word of a problem in the south bay. we'll explain -- coming up. a lot of fog yesterday. that's not the case today. there's some. it will burn off sooner. warmer or staying the same? we'll have the answer -- coming up.

welcome back to "mornings on 2." a wildfire big problem. still burning out of control near lake tahoe. firefighters are focused on trying to save a nearby town. they call this the washington fire. it's already burned more than 13,000 acres southeast of the community of markleeville and some of the roads around that

town are closed. the fire is bushed by strong winds. it's threatening five homes and 15 historic cabins. an alert has gone out to markleeville residents be prepared in case evacuations are ordered. in the meantime, other crews, they are trying to get a handle on several wildfires burning all over california. the firefighters are battling a massive fire, this one in the san bernardino mountains. now, the cooler weather, it's helping the fire crews make progress. but the terrain is very rough. that's a challenge. firefighters are urging everyone threatened by the whiffs, be vigilant and be prepare -- by the wildfires be vig vigilant and be prepared to leave. >> if it starts getting more smoky and hard to breathe, if the conditions start to change, take a look at what's going on in their area. >> firefighters have responded to about 1100 wildfires so far

this year. that's almost double the number they see in the normal year. officials say the dry drought conditions, it's creating even more fuel for those fires. it's now up to governor brown to decide if medical marijuana users should be denied organ transplants. state lawmakers overwhelmingly approved a bill that would make that illegal. supporters say some medical marijuana users have been treated like drug abusers, by doctors and denied transplants only because they use marijuana as medicine. mark leno sponsored a bill that he says would save lives. quick thinking from a 14- year-old antioch boy who protected his siblings from someone who tried to break into their home. he called 911 as a stranger was trying to get inside his home. armed with a knife, the 14-year- old boy led his two younger siblings in the bedroom and locked the door until police arrived. officers found the suspect on

the porch outside the home. he's been arrested. none of the children were hurt. here's one for you -- skinny jeans, they may be bad for your health. now, according to the washington post, a woman in australia collapsed in a park after her skinny jeans caused her to lose all of the feeling in her legs and feet. she actually crawled to a more public place. she hailed a cab, went to the emergency room. doctors had to cut off her skinny jeans. they say the extremely tight jeans caused a lot of damage to her muscles and her nerve fibers and if she had not been treated in time, she could have permanently lost her ability to walk. that's incredible. >> very skinny. >> yeah. and comfortable. [laughter] let's go to our sal castanedo in the traffic center. >> i'm just adding that to a list of problems i will never have. >> i hate those skinny jeans anyway. >> well, i won't have to worry about that. let's take a look at what we have now with the morning commute. you will see the traffic is

going to be deceptively good here. look at this. it's empty. i will tell you why. let's go to the maps. northbound 280 at 87 there is an injury accident. northbound 87 right here at the -- northbound 280, 87. so after that, the traffic picks up for a bit, then slows again. 101 is a little bit slow. we'll also look at the east bay, you where now we have slow traffic on 80 appearing. it appears that the lighter commute seems to be a little bit -- it's going away a little bit on hercules. you can see slow traffic there. 680 slow traffic coming down to walnut creek. let's go to the bay bridge toll plaza. and you can see traffic here at the toll plaza is about a 15- minute delay getting into san francisco. still a little better than normal. but definitely some slowing out there. it's 7:18. let's go to steve. >> thank you. we do have mostly clear skies. there's a fog today kind of

favoring around the san mateo coast. cassie jean, el granada, on the san mateo coast, gmsp, that's good morning. 48 how about that? and mostly foggy but i do see patches of blue sky here and there. half moon bay was 49 as well. a little chill by the coast. only some patchy fog. yesterday, except for santa cruz, it was solid. that's not the case today. usually monsoon moisture, thunderstorms from northern mexico moving in. it's a july/august thing. it's inching northward into june. some of that looks like it wants to visit us later in the week. 50s, 60s for some. santa rosa, 51. 52 half moon bay. san jose, 57. livermore, 58. had a roaring delta breeze yesterday. that's not the case today. 12, 15 miles an hour. one of the coldest water temps is the bodega bay buoy between

49 and 50. truckee, 34. they are now 43. 59 ukiah. 50s, 60s, 70s through the interior. the big news continues to be the heat. it's hot. 88 in washington, d.c. chicago got slammed with severe weather last night into illinois. parts of indiana and michigan. that was the system that barreled through there. it's now kind of collapsed a little bit but there's still some potential for lightning and some more cloud and rain as it moves into the northeast. new york, boston, into bangor, maine and parts of vermont and maine. here is the monsoon moisture coming up. there is a little low coming along baja. that will park itself off the california coast. as the high builds northward, it takes the moisture in a clockwise fashion. the low, the flow around that is counterclockwise. they will happen onto that and start sending moisture northward. the timing is tough. it does look like around friday, some of that will move

into our area. you can see we cloud it up on friday. that would take the edge off the temps but it also increased the humidity. there will be thunderstorms erupting here. we'll keep an eye on it for friday and saturday. sacramento valley and over the sierra. an interesting pattern for june. this is not something we usually see this time of year. maybe late july or august but not june. a little warmer inland. breezy at times. but not that bcompared to yesterday. 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s. summertime pattern, although far less on the low cloud coverage today. 68 alameda. 93 in brentwood. 85 livermore. 70 in berkeley. 88 morgan hill, 7 in santa cruz. 80 milpitas. downtown san jose, beautiful 78. 70 san bruno. 80 woodside and 74 in san mateo. millbrae and burlingame. warm to hot wednesday thursday. if high clouds don't arrive, thursday will be a scorcher and then we cool it down and cloud it up.

involving tom praydy and deflate gate gets -- brady and deflategate gets underway. they are set to square off against nfl attorneys in front of roger goodell. brady is appealing a four-game suspension he received from goodell. the san mateo native is accused of knowingly using underinflated footballs in last season's afc championship game. the league also said he was not fully concandid during the investigation of the incident. it's natural for parents to get upset when a coach yells at their child. but police say sean "diddy" combs went too far. his son is on the ucla football team. he got upset when a coach yelled at his son during a practice session. police say he used a kettle bell as a weapon. no one was seriously hurt and combs was released from jail on bail tonight. the cleanup and recovery operations are underway in the midwest. strong storms caused a lot of

damage. here's new overnight video. you can see the damage. this is in the town of sublet. fierce winds knocked down several trees onto rvs at a campground. one tornado touched down in michigan yesterday. the hardest hit area is around the town of portland, michigan. the tornado destroyed homes, uprooted trees and knocked down power lines. the fire crews rescued at least five people from collapsed buildings but fortunately, there's no word of any sireious injuries -- serious injuries. >> it only lasted a few seconds. i heard there were three coming through. >> iowa was hit with strong winds and large hail. experts say parts of the ohio valley and northeast are next in line for severe storms today. the warriors continue to celebrate their nba title with their fans. in 12 minute, the big turnout

you drive past 880. northbound 280 getting up to highway 17 is slow. there is a spot where it's good. most of it is slow because of a crash reported, northbound 280 at 87. northbound 17 is also going to be slow at von hill because of a stalled truck there. 17 is a little bit slow getting down to the valley. let's move to the maps. san francisco in the peninsula. not too bad here as you drive south. you can see traffic continues to look good. the road sensors are not showing us a lot. we had an earlier stall on the dumbarton bridge. that's gone. both bridges getting over to the peninsula. been toll plaza is backed up for a 15-minute delay. the time, 7:31. back to the desk. oakland police have a new lead in a homicide case they've been trying to sove for nearly a year -- solve for nearly a year. the new information came after the family of the teen killed at a fast-food drive threw made a new call for help.

tara moriarty has more. what did they find? >> reporter: they found a new picture of the suspect. this is a sketch that they have and they also have a snapshot taken off surveillance video of the suspect's vehicle and they found it after police as well as the victim's family made a renewed call for help in cold cases last week. >> so come on and please give us a hand. we need your help. thank you so much. >> thank you so much. >> reporter: after this plea from the father of the girl, police say they received new evidence about her killer. this is a look at the composite sketch. oakland police say he's one of the men involved in the 18-year- old's shooting death at a wendy's drive-through last july 10th. police say he was the driver of a black ford escape suv seen driving away from the fast-food restaurant on international boulevard at about 8:45 that night. it appears to be a 2013 model. police are hoping someone will recognize the suspect. >> she was an innocent young

officers. oakland's taking a step toward improving race relations but the way it's being handled at city hall had people banging on the doors last night. pam cook is here. it turned into chaos last night. >> yeah, definitely. they were set to discuss a special department handling race relations. a lot of people were left standing unhappy outside of the building. >> let them in! >> people were shut out of last night's meeting to try to keep things orderly. as we've been reporting, some recent meetings became so loud and crowded that counsel members found it to be too disruptive. some meetings had to be adjourned early. access had to be reeb stricted. so overflow rooms were set up. people signed up to speak during the public comment period said they had a hard time knowing when to take their turn at the microphone. >> all of these people are on deck to speak and the only

monitor that they have is the small tv. we can't hear what's going on inside of the council chambers. >> despite the chaos you, the council will approve a motion by brooks to create a new department and the council seemed to be inive faker of libby schaaf's proposals -- in favor of libby schaaf's proposals. last night's meeting was to include public comment but the council has to pass the final budget next week before the state's june 30th deadline. gasia? >> thank you. multiple stabbing in sacramento is being investigated as a hate crime. a group of musicians was walking home sunday night in the midtown area when they say a man called them a gay slur, made fun of their skinny jeans and chased them with a knife. the suspect was tracked down by police and he was arrested. after reading several social media posts and hearing the

victims' testimony, authorities he darked on -- tacked on a hate crime charge. if the supreme court rules that individual states can refuse to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, a lot of people predict a lot of confusion will follow. the question would then be what about the 36 states where same- sex marriage is now legal? the consensus of legal experts is that in the 16 states where same-sex marriage is legal because of state court rulings or state legislation or statewide referendums, nothing would change. however, in the remaining 20 states including california where legalization came through federal court rulings, that's not so clear. some experts say they would start to deny licenses to same- sex couples. that's considered unlikely here in california. now, of court still has several other big cases to rule

on. one is on the affordable care act, also called obamacare which could eliminate subsidies for more than 6 million people in 34 states. there's also a challenge to the president's environmental rules requiring power plants to reduce toxic emissions. north one deals with the drugs used -- used in oklahoma for lethal injections. voters will go to polls to choose a new member of city council. the two top vote getters out of ten candidates in the april election, neither of them received a necessary 50% of the vote to win. the district 4 covers north san jose including the berryessa and ail visa neighborhoods. steph curry is featured on the warriors cover. it reads splashdown, after a 40-

learning more about a deadly crash at a vallejo bus stop. witnesses say they saw the driver slumped over his steering wheel friday just before he jumped a curb on sonoma boulevard and rammed into six people waiting at a bus stop. one woman was killed. five other people were injured, including two children. the driver of the 65-year-old man from suisun, investigators did route out alcohol but said he was leaving a medical marijuana dispensary before the crash. >> i don't care if it's marijuana, alcohol, methamphetamines. i mean, come on. this lady lost her life. her children no longer have a mother. >> the driver was later arrested and released but he could be arrested again depending upon toxicology results. investigators say that he may have had some sort of medical episode while behind the wheel.

7:43. new this morning, home rental prices around the country are up more than 4% according to zillow. but the biggest price increases, they are not in the bay area. people living in san jose and san francisco yes, you've seen rents jump 10% but renters in jackson, mississippi are paying almost 23% more than last year. portland, maine ranked number 2 with rents going up 17% and rents are actually down slightly in chicago, milwaukee and new orleans. but bay area rents, they are still the highest in the nation. the average topping $3,000 a month. there has been a significant drop in the homeless population in silicon valley. there is a new census report finding the number of people on the streets fell 15% in san jose since the last count two years ago. santa clara county saw a similar reduction, 14%. now, officials say the new emphasis on finding housing for

the homeless, this is having an impact, but still more than 6500 people in the south bay were out on the streets. law enforcement officers in new york may be closer to ever than finding two escaped killers who broke out in prison. they've confirmed the two killers were in a remote hunting cabin in northern new york. the dna of david sweat and richard matt was found on items inside the cabin. they escaped on june 6th with help from a prison worker. the new york state prison where they escaped from is already under scrutiny but now a viral video you have to see of a live broadcast is raising even more questions about security. >> there's a person in the background with a red bag walking across the street in the background. the newscaster is reporting and they walk over to the prison while. and then somebody lowers a rope

welcome back to "mornings on 2." it's 7:52. san jose police arrested a man who climbed to the top of a 90- foot crane near city hall and he stayed up there for 14 hours. we were on this live yesterday. we brought it to you all day on "mornings on 2." police say 39-year-old alam scandar climbed nine stories up on the crane and into the crane's glass panel basket sunday night. he eventually climbed down. you can see him here. this was about 10:00 yesterday morning after a police officer promised to give him a burrito. he told the mercury news in a

jailhouse interview, he doesn't have a home. he's moved from one friend's couch to another. he says he saw the american flag waving at the top of the crane and decided to climb the crane. oakland city leaders have the report on the coliseum for the pro sports. they just haven't looked at it. it was delivered by the deadline but when ktvu went to oakland city hall yesterday, no one we talked to said they have lacked at the report. oakland's assistant administrator plans to review it next week and remains optimistic. >> i think this is the beginning of the watershed moment. with this information we're able to ask better questions and hopefully begin to look at and review what is gonna -- what's the deal to make this work. >> or can it work at all? >> that's right. >> she says the raiders have told the city they have six to eight weeks to make some decisions. looks like it was starbucks's plan to pull the

the moisture is still 90 heading towards 111. the dry heat is gone. get out of town. some of that high cloud is on its way for us, maybe friday and saturday. fog will burn off sooner. 67 in brentwood, san jose is already at 61. 50s or others. hayward at 59. not much of a breeze. a little one but it was much stronger yesterday, and that fog deck is burning off and suck of that is going to get wrapped around -- around the high. some low clouds but they're already burning off quick. sunny and nice, warm to hot for some inland. not too bad by the coast. approximately sal, east bay, i think you've been touching on that a little bit here. the east bay has been better than the south bay. let's take a look at what we have now. you can see the traffic here on

the east bay commute. it is going to be slow on southbound 680 as you drive from concord to walnut creek. highway 24 is still slow, and 680 is slow into danville. 580 to livermore is getting slow. as i drag the map around the south bay, 101 has filled in. gone is the light commute. 280 is backed up on the 680 and 85 is slow as well. so this is not a lighter than usual commute for the south bay. in some places in the east bay we're beginning to see lighter than usual conditions. let's take a look at some live pictures, the bay bridge toll plaza, you can see it's backed up for about a 15 to 20 minute delay. no problems on highway 101. that looks good. 8:01. let's go back to the desk. new this morning, we're getting late information on a fire in vallejo. one man was able to escape but

was seriously hurt. brian flores live now. >>reporter: we have information about the man that was involved in this fire, but look behind me. this is what's left of the garage here in vallejo. this morning it's all about cleanup. a lot of crews out there putting boards onto the windows as well as to the side of the house. lots of damage to the garage, as well as to a car. and that may have a lot to do with how this fire started. as we go to video from earlier, take a look at how intense this fire was. it started just before 12:30 this morning, and the flames got so intense, according to firefighters and residents who live nearby, that firefighters had to cut holes on the roof using chain saws. the ba battalion chief says the man was welding or repairing a gas tank on a car.

he says that the man did set the fuel aside, but as we know, gas and flames don't mix and the fire fickly spread -- quickly spread. >> there's damage inside. we had to pull ceilings because the attic was involved. it got into the attic and then there was smoke damage throughout the house. the first officer that went inside the house said there was zero visibility. >> i was really big and really fast, burned really fast, and it woke me up because i heard the man yelling to his wife to get out of the house because he was in the garage working on her car. >>reporter: firefighters say the man did have second and third degree burns to his torso as a result. he was taken to a nearby hospital where he is currently recovering. he also lives at the home with his wife, a cat and dog. they were able to get out of

the home safely but there was so much heavy smoke that crews had to administer oxygen to the dog. again, we understand the pets, as well as his wife, they are doing okay, but if you take it back out here live, the fire did reach two alarms, came close to damaging nearby homes, but that wasn't the case. the ironic thing that we're learning, is that this man that was welding may have some firefighter training. we did see a sign from san joaquin fire department outside, and this man is recovering in the hospital. his wife and two pets are doing okay. >> brian even though everyone is okay, it doesn't look like anyone is going to come back to live at that house anytime soon. >>reporter: we're hearing it's

uninhabitable. it's gonna take a lot of cleanup, at least this morning and the coming weeks. >> thanks you. time is now 8:05. a wild fire near lake tahoe is spreading. it's a washington fire. it's already scorched more than 13,000 acres where the roads are closed, and this fire pushed by strong winds is threatening five homes and 15 historic cabins out there. an alert has gone out to residents to be prepared in case evacuations are ordered. fire crews are trike to get a -- trying to get a handle op fires burning across california. now, the weather is cooler. that's helping the firefighters make progress, but the rough terrain is a challenge. the fire crews are urging everybody being threatened by the flames to be ready to leave. >> we just encourage them to be

permit uber and other ride sharing companies pick up petitioners at the airport. -- passengers at the airport. they want to be a leader in the industry and make services vents for travelers. these services have grown in popularity. last year sfo permitted uber and other companies to operate there. here's what a driver from san jose told us this morning. >> i have people that i've dropped up. i know there's a petition to have access here, so let's see what happens. >>reporter: do you really want that to happen? >> it would benefit everybody, not just uber but the customer as well. >>reporter: the proposal has caused a big upset among cab drivers. they are concerned they will go out of business because of the competition. they face stricter regulation and pay higher fees to operate. one cab driver told us business at the airport has really slowed down for him and he's

. the government hack attack we told you about a couple weeks ago may be four times bigger than first thought. the personal information of 18 million people who either work for or used to work for the government is at risk. also 1.6 billion dollars. that's how much domestic airlines made from check backs and reservation change fees in the first three months of this year. that's a record despite january through march being a slower time of the year for travel. and pilots who fly for allegiant air claim their airline is cutting safety along with their cost. the pilot's union sent a list of 38 potentially dangerous incidents in the first three months of this year, and they include engine failures, radar issues and smoke in the cockpit. now, allegiant says its safety record is among the best in

during the public comment period said they had a hard time knowing when to take their turn. >> all of these people are on deck to speak, and the only monitor they have is this small tv. we can't hear what's going on inside the council chambers. >>reporter: now, despite the chaos and frustration, the council did approve a motion to create a new department on race and equity. that is part of the push to make oakland safer which includes the proposal to add more police officers. now, the deadline to pass the final budget is next week. time is 8:35. plans for the richmond san rafael bridge moving ahead. it's a 74 million-dollar project. it would convert the shoulder in the eastbound direction into an extra lane during the evening commute to ease traffic. the shoulder would also be converted in the westbound

direction into a pathway for cyclers and pedestrians. it is expected to be finished by the summer of 2017. in the meantime, those lanes are open after but that's after a two-hour closure early this morning. the crews installed r stalled overhead signs on highway 1 and 101 in preparation for the new drive. another round of closures is scheduled between 1:00 and 3:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. the full shutdown of highway 101 will take place between july 9th and july 13th. that's when the workers will demolish the temporary connectors. a bill preventing marijuana users is heading to the govern. some users were treated by

doctors as drug abusers. this new legislation helps them by prohibiting a doctor or hospital from disqualifying someone solely because of their medical marijuana use. we're finding out more about a deadly crash that happened at a bus stop in vallejo. witnesses saw the driver slumping over his steering wheel on friday just before his car jumped a curve and ran into six people waiting at a bus stop. one woman was killed, five others hurt, including two children. the driver, a 65-year-old man. now, investigates ruled out alcohol as a factor but they say the driver was scene leaving a medical marijuana dispensary just before that crash. >> i don't care if it's marijuana, alcohol, methamphetamines. i mean come on, this lady lost her life. her children no longer have a mother. >> now, that driver was arrested and later released, but he could be rearrested

we're getting word now that actor dick van paton died this morning in southern california, a familiar face best known for his role as tom bradford on the 80's tv series 8 is enough, and the love boat, and most recently the 70's show. he died this morning in santa monica due to complications from diabetes. he leaves behind his wife and their three sons, including the tennis star who is a great player. dick van paton has died at the age of 86 years old. someone has defaced a statute in baltimore. as you see here, the words read black lives matter. they were written in yellow paint yesterday at the base of the statute.

the statue was put up by the maryland daughters of the confederacy in 1903. so what does the confederate flag represent. some argue the flag is a symbol of slavery and oppression, while others argue it's a matter of heritage and pride. let's take a look at the cover of today's charlotte observer. the head line, south carolina leaders join to remove the flag. the question being posed to readers, tame to change the flag? it's not easy. removing it would require a two- thirds vote in the state

from the east bay. a richmond police officer has been hurt in an incident involving a police dog in the parking lot of the police department. are richmond police source confirms to ktvu the dog was shot in this incident. it's in the clear if the officer shot the dog or the dog attacked the officer. we know the officer is in the hospital and the dog is being seen by a veterinarian. we'll giver you more information on fox 2 and throughout the day on ktvu.com. oakland has the report on the development plans for oakland's pro sports teams. the report was delivered by sunday's deadline, however, ktvu went to oakland city hall yesterday. we found none of the officials we talked to looked at the report. the assistant city administrator plans to review
