no homes were damaged. many homeowners cleared the brush and the dry grass surrounding their homes. firefighters in oakland say they found the body of a 58- year-old man inside a burning apartment today. it happened before 11:00 a.m. this morning in an apartment on east 15th street. the man was pulled out of the building and pronounced dead at the scene. officials say the fire was contained to one unit and no one else was hurt. investigators are working to figure out what started the fire. police are trying to figure out how a police dog got out of its cage in a patrol car and why the dog attacked a police officer who was walking into work this morning. ktvu's cristina rendon spoke with police, what are they telling you? >> reporter: the department is just shocked and saddened that one of their k9s attacked an officer on his way to work. the officer had to fire back in self-defense and now both

officer and dog are recovering. >> reporter: in a place of security where officers are trained to protect and service, no one expected a k9 to attack an officer in the parking lot of the police department. the officer shot the k9 in self- defense. >> the k9 was inside a secured vehicle while the handler left him there. we are trying to figure out what transpired. >> reporter: the dog similar to this one was shot once. now recovering. the officer who was bit on his hand is expected to be okay. >> it merits an investigation. how it occurred to begin with. the actions of the officer, his response to what was happeningimators an investigation. >> the k9 will be looked at. a lock on the cage could only be opened by the handler. a trainer told me there is a

the confederate flag flown for the past 15 years at the state house grounds. today lawmakers voted 103-10 to debate if it should stay there after 9 people were killed inside a historic black church. john roberts reports. >> reporter: demonstrators gathered in south carolina today calling for the confederate flag to be removed from the state house grounds saying it is a racist symbol. the call comes after the race related killings of 8 churchgoers and their pastor. supporters say it is not the flag that committed the crime and they want it to stay, others say it belongs elsewhere. >> time for did i recall get past -- south carolina to get past its history. it belongs in a museum. >> law makers are heeding the pressure. voting in favor today to hold a special session to discuss the flag's removal. the controversy has also

man suffered serious burns in a fire that started as he was welding a leaky gas tank on a car. the flames were so intense as you can see, that they had to use chain saws to vent the flames. firefighters say the man drained the gas tank before but there may have been enough vape iser to start had fire. a neighbor say he tried using a fire extinkuisher and a hose but it was too big. . >> he had a fire extinguisher, she tried to grab that and give it to him but it got out of hand fast. >> the man is hospitalized with second and third degree burns

suspect. investigators say on april 15 a man called out to a woman who was walking on blackford avenue. when the woman turned around the suspect was standing there exposing himself and when she tried to get away the suspect took her purse and ran off. the suspect is a black man, 5'8", with a heavy build. a musician in sacramento is speaking out about being the victim of a hate crime. he says what upsets him is the man who was arrested has now been released. our sister station talked to him and his wife. >> we are at the top of our game. >> reporter: sunday went from fun to terrifying. >> it was, like, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in 5 minutes. reasons that this collapsed, the folks, the victims will have their day in court. >> reporter: a week after the balcony collapse berkeley's building department says the code should be upgraded. >> we will make recommendations. >> reporter: all future balconies, decks, stairs will have to have ventilation holes to prevent water build up and ports to make inspections easy to do. they would have to be made using approved materials. finally all existing balconies, the onces out there right now, they would have to be inspected that owners cost within six months of this requirement's adoption plus reinspections every 5 years.
