4:00 pm
the violence may be connected. batkid is back in the bay area as a movie debuts about his wish thatover the city. is el nino really happening? what will the impact be on california? bill sits down to break down fact from fiction today on the four. welcome to the four. good afternoon. >> hello everyone. two shootings in four days. one of them deadly. now police in contra costa say the violence is collected. >> you had a chance to talk to police today. what did they tell you? >> well police were saying, look public should not be worried because these gang related shootings. we know they were tar getting one another. or at least one gang targeting some victims that may not be
4:01 pm
affiliated with gainings. they are concerned about what's going on. the first one last night the shooting happened on the on ram top highway 4. there were two people in their car. they were shot at multiple times. even though they had their windows busted out, they went inside the hospital and a 19-year-old woman from concord passed away. a 26-year-old man was also hurt but he is going to be okay. then you go to saturday where there was first initial shooting on highway 4 near bailey road. a 20-year-old man from pittsburg died. people are saying this is unsettling and they are on edge. >> it's -- the shot was intended for somebody people that are doing this aren't thinking -- they are not just killing that
4:02 pm
person off. they are hurting a family. >> and that woman says they are also hurting the community here because people are concerned about what is going on. they are also wondering if there is going to be a retaliation shooting. right now it's in the hands of the contra costa sheriffs department. they are trying to find video of the incident. think are asking people to come forward with tips if they saw anything on saturday afternoon or anything last night around 10:00. they want you to contact them because they want to make sure that the suspect or suspects are brought to justice in this two cases. >> did the sheriff's department say if any deputies or highway patrol officers are going to be up and down highway 4 in the coming days just to make sure everything is cool out there? >> yeah, they said they are working closely with all of the local agencies along highway 4. when you think about it you are talking about cities like
4:03 pm
pittsburg and antioch all of them are going to be on alert as well as chp and the contra costa sheriff's office that are going to be patrolling this area and trying to find these people responsible in this gang related shootings. >> when you say gang related shootings, did the police elaborate on that? i know they wanted to sound like things are safe out there but you have to be concerned if you are using highway 4. >> exactly i would be concerned. i don't drive on it every single day but many people do. it's a heavily traffic freeway. authorities wouldn't expand on the gang relation here. they wouldn't say if this was retaliation shooting last night. they wouldn't say if these are two gangs shooting at each other. they wouldn't say if all three victims in this case are affiliated with gangs. they are saying it is gang
4:04 pm
related but they are not explaining how or why this happened. >> we appreciate that live report. today firefighters are finally getting a little bit of ground on that wildfire burning south of lake tahoe. the washington fire is close to the small town of marklyville. >> crews have this fire contained. it's already burned more than 16,000 acres. there were many people out there fighting this fire. as a precaution residents have been warned to prepare. they should be ready to evacuate. >> if push comes to shove everybody would get that our car. >> i hope it ends soon and all of our friends and neighbors will come back into town and we will be back in business like we should be. >> now crews say one advantage they have today is that the wind seems to be dying down which is helping to ease the spread of that fire. >> it is really only the start
4:05 pm
of fire season. >> it is only the start. joining us now from cal fire station is battalion chief mike martin. let's talk about this. the winds are dying down but it is expected to warm up. what do you guys need out there to help with this fire fight? >> anytime it's warm and windy we are prepared and ready to go. we ask sit citizens to be careful out near dry vegetation. >> how does drought affect you guys? >> well right now we are still look pretty good. it is dry out there. our helicopters use any water source they can find nearest to the fire. if there isn't any water near it then we will bring in water tenders and setup tanks. >> chief we talk about the
4:06 pm
residents there. they have been warned. they are ready to evacuate. how much time will they have to grab their stuff and get out of the area? >> well anytime there's a fire nearby it's good just to do a precautionary take all your valuables and get out the sooner the better. if you wait until the last minute then there's con guest tons on the road. sometimes it hampers firefighters. we always ask residents to get out early if they can. >> can you put on a scale of 1-10 how bad is it this year compared to years past in your career? >> we are still early in the year. it's not up to that extreme nature. if you call the 91 tunnel fire in oakland was at the end of fire season, at the end of a fourth year drought. we are in a fourth year drought
4:07 pm
right now. so it is ahead of schedule. that happens occasionally in california we are aware of that. we are on the dry end of the spectrum. >> let's talk about fourth of july. what warning do you have? >> don't use any fire works of any kind near any kind of dry vegetation. do it in the middle of a parking lot or park but not anywhere where there is dry vegetation. >> are you going to have extra staffing for fourth of july. >> yeah, almost all agencies, we are so fortunate between city county state and federal we are all used to help each other and every fourth of july everyone staffs up and there will be extra resources available. >> all right thank you so much for your time. >> thank you. >> federal judge today formally sentenced boston marathon bomber
4:08 pm
to death for the 2013 terror attacks. he spoke in court at his sentencing hearing. for the first time he apologized to the victims. saying quote i would like now to apologize to the victims and the survivors. i am sorry for the lives i have taken. the judge told him quote your name is mentioned what will be the remember is the evil you did. what will be remembered and you murdered and mained innocent people. >> regret having ever wanted to hear him speak because what he said showed no remorse no regret and no em pathy for what he has done for our lives. >> he was also convicted of killing a massachusetts police officer days later. hundreds of people lined up to day to pay their respects to one of the nine people killed in
4:09 pm
the charleston church shooting. the body of state senator arrived at the south carolina statehouse. he is the first african-american to lie in state at the south carolina statehouse under the capitol dome since reconstruction. he was also a pastor at the church that is where these shootings happened. president obama is set to deliver the yule guy at his funeral on friday. >> the focus of his remarks will be on celebrating the life of them. >> vice president joe biden and first lady michelle obama are set to attend funeral. as is a bipartisan group of lawmakers. it is the story of a young cancer survivor and it took over an entire city. if not the entire world. more on the documentary batkid begins. it's about to make its big

4:14 pm
up to this big day making sure everything was perfect. the movie director is expected to attend along with batkid and as long as the actor who played that man. >> very cool. christian joining us live outside the theater. any activity? >> no activity outside yet. we did manage to work our way in. take a look here is the red carpet. it's already rolled out. this is a movie everyone in the bay area had to be waiting for. it was such a big moment here in the bay area. you can see the team here for the film. everybody is here for tonight's big film. they are prepping the theater upstairs. you see behind the team, the posters from batkid begins. this is a day to celebrate
4:15 pm

4:16 pm
main character of the movie. i have the entire time i have been making it. people ask if this could have happened anywhere else and i don't think it could have. i think the powers of being in the city from the police chief who you are going to talk to to the fire chief to the mayor to parks and rec, everybody allowed this to go on. i think in another city and maybe in a different day in this city it would have been too scary to see where it went. >> yeah, really excited to have this premier here in san francisco. you heard her saying she doesn't think this could have happened in any other city except for san francisco. this was an amazing moment. you heard from her that we did get a chance to speak to the chief of police. he hopes to make it out tonight for the big show. we are actually in the theater now. if we go out to our live shot this is the theater they are going to be prepping for
4:17 pm

4:18 pm
community wanted to help him. this is also something the community got something out of. the chief said in our discussion he said lot of times there's so much bad news out there. this was a chance for some good news and a chance for people to be excited about something and rally behind something. i know i was caught up in it. i think everybody felt that moment that collective sense of joy that we are going to root this young man who had been through so much right? he was a sick little boy. he been through so much and we really wanted to have his back. it was neat to be apart of that. >> captivating for sure. thank you for that report. let's turn to mark right now. >> do it. >> it's heating up. >> we are heating up. get ready for more triple digits. tomorrow we are in the comfortable range out there. tomorrow we are talking about some more extreme heat for some of the inland neighborhoods. temperatures up a good 5-10 degrees. looking out across the bayou can see a little bit of chop on the
4:19 pm
bay waters. next camera is lafayette. you can see the try moving on cue. the tree getting a little bit of action. still some clear skies and warming up. we will be talking about the temperatures inland near 100 degrees by this time tomorrow. san jose lots of sunshine there. san jose will be approaching the 90 degree mark in the thursday forecast. right now across the entire state take a look at the heat. 106 there. palm springs of course 109 degrees at last check out there. here's a closer look. we still have some patchy fog out there. it's kind of melting away. that's just about it. i suspect some patchy fog will regroup overnight and bump up near shoreline. that's about first thing tomorrow morning. current numbers we are showing you some low 90s. san jose in the upper 70s. san francisco in the 60s.
4:20 pm
everybody up as we do head into your thursday forecast. you can see the levels we reached today. then for tomorrow look at liver more approaching 101 degrees. tomorrow will be the hottest day of the week. timeline in concord 7:00 a mild 63 degrees. on track to reach the mid 90s. concord will be back up in the upper 90s for tomorrow afternoon. tomorrow morning partly cloudy skies. some patchy coastal fog. a narrow temperature range at 7:00. it expandings throughout the afternoon hours. 68 all the way to 102 degrees. triple digits for the warmest locations of the bay area. high pressure still building in. we had the micro climates out there. the beaches not watching up much. with that you heard about fire danger earlier in the newscast. we do not have any red flag warnings.
4:21 pm
thankfully the winds will not be too strong. still very hot and dry out there. here's a closer look at the fog tomorrow morning. not much out there. then into the afternoon hours all those bright colors reflecting the warmup out there. oakland lower 80s. triple digits out. there san jose 91. even san francisco back up into the 70s. going to be a beautiful day downtown. forecast high is 76 degrees. here your lock ahead. we will cool things off friday and into the weekend end. by the weekend we will be tracking some high clouds. probably feel muggy out there as the moisture moves in from the south by this weekend. tomorrow get ready. at least we have options in the bay area. >> thank you. we have a couple of live pictures. some breaking news to talk about right here. two fires. this is the first one coming
4:22 pm
into our newsroom. this is a fire burping near -- burping near sack burn -- burning near sacramento. we don't know how big yet. this developing live. also keep -- a second fire other than this one right here. >> this is from bay point. you see a smoke from the fire burning in pittsburg. right now we have two fires burning. this one is from our camera in bay point. this is smoke from a fire burping in pittsburg. we also have this one as well. we are going to keep an eye on both these fires and bring you more if we can. he took a risk and can caught a baseball at a major league game. that's not the important part. he had his 7 month old son in his arms at the time. find out what the dodger has
4:23 pm
to say to this fan after the game >> of course the dodgers have to say something after that. we are also in the throws of a drought. there are already predictions that el nino fuelled rainstorms are headed our way this winter. bill is going to join us in the four by four today to separate fact from fiction.
4:24 pm
4:25 pm
want to bring you up to speed.
4:26 pm
these are flames of a wildfire that just broke out. fluid situation. initially we were told near sacramento. this is actually burning in southern california. about ten miles north of the burbank area. >> you can see the big concern right now. from our vantage point looking at these images from the skies it's burning real close to some homes there. you see the helicopter right there trying to get a handle on this fire. >> already a busy fire season. we just had a chief come on air in our last segment saying they are ready to go. >> wow. let's take a look at some of the things generating some buzz on social media today. >> let's start with the man the warriors took down in the
4:27 pm
finals. lebron james return to social media. he posted this picture of his sons on a roller coaster. >> his post said it hurt to lose. i have been in a funk lately but this is what motivates know do what i do. how can i be down when i know my kids and my fans have my back? being back home and back with my fans is everything i dreamed of. thank you for an incredible season. i am not satisfied. i am not happy with the way things turned out. i promise to get better. >> that's cool. >> you get that being in a funk after you lost a big game? >> totally get it. that's back in the day after losing a head down. >> do you say poor guy or no? >> then you see your children and then start to smile a bit. a few days ago he appeared on the bleacher report. he said he's looking forward to next season. >> we have been talk about this one too.
4:28 pm
the catch that happened last night in chicago. a fan, look at him he's going to make an amazing catch. look at what is in his arms. he's feeding the baby. >> he has the bottle in there and snags the foul ball out of his glove. guess what? they ruled that it was out because it was fan interference. >> then cubs fan keith caught it. >> that was his name, keith is his name. he went on to say a little something about that catch. >> i'm just trying to protect him and i see the ball coming up and just kind of fell in my hands. hopefully he's not too upset. he's on a my fantasy team. >> in the end it was ruled an out. >> how ever good thing they were not ejected. he did say they were a little nervous. >> i think she was nervous.
4:29 pm
>> and take a look, the dodgers had a little fun with this catch. thanks for the third out, man. [ laughter ] >> first baseman wasn't impressed. he said it would have been more impressive if his baby would have caught the ball. >> right. [ laughter ] it's been a few years since we received a lot of rain. some people are already predicting a stormy winter in the bay area. >> we sit down with bill martin to explain what needs to happen for el nino to take shape. education and being informed about the market. not whether or not you believe you deserve a raise. >> a key piece of advice for workers who need to be paid more. >> why do so many employees avoid asking for that raise? that story is coming. you wouldn't expect account hearing involving a [ indiscernible ] walking was out in court today and said that tagger broke down
4:30 pm
in tears. her story is coming up at 6:00.
4:31 pm
4:32 pm
today in the four by four california is in the
4:33 pm
grip of a serious drought. >> a lot of folks talking about el nino and whether the conditions are right for storms this winter. bill martin joining us now right here. bill it's hard for me to even think four to five months out that people are saying we are going to have a wet winter but it happens. >> it does happen. you know the area, you have been up in the valley for a while. what we are into [ indiscernible ] kind of all bets are off the table in terms of what is coming up. we except we have an el nino brewing. as strong as any el nino we have seen. >> when you say brewing what do you mean? >> sea surface temperatures are brewing up. >> look at, this in january see the read down there? you can kind out make out the
4:34 pm
united states. that is january. we are starting to see warm water. what happens is that warm water as it piles up begins to put more moisture into the air. look what's going on here. as we go through february, more ch april -- march april see those lights? we are looking at june now and coming up on almost 2 degrees above average. what that means is this could be a very strong el nino. what it does is it takes the storm #1k3 and it puts it on steroids. it ises adding moisture to the atmosphere. what happens is if this el nino, this warm water i just showed you, sit down there now, it has to phase in with our winter. if it doesn't -- if it happens
4:35 pm
now and goes away by november, no big deal. >> so you are talking about jet streams picking it up? >> yes. well it has nothing to do with how warm the water is off our coast. it has everything to do with how warm it is up there. >> it's dry dry dry. the past four years looked like that. now you have it brewing there. this one could be a strong one. it's down there. the jet stream never gets near it. watch what happens. some tropical jet starts to form. in the winter months, our jet stream has the opportunity to dip down and grab some of that extra fuel and suck it in. a storm that would be a 3 and it turns into a 10.
4:36 pm
el ninos are extremely good at producing atmospheric rivers. >> what does that mean the us when it comes to drought and when it comes to possible flooding? our streets and our homes. what does that mean? >> that means, bay area we do have flooding, we do have droughts. this -- what we are looking at right now we have only seen two this strong. we could have the wettest winter we have ever seen. it could be an 82. or it could be a regular winter. my suspicion i have seen a bunch of these two, two big ones, i have a strong feeling we have going to have a heck of a winter. this kind of impacts san jose. it impacts los angeles. it won't get us. we are going to be on the north edge of the activity.
4:37 pm
>> something like this comes in and 40-50 inches of rain? >> yeah. a place could easily get 50-60 inches of rain. they could even get 80 inches of rain. what you are going to get is wet storms up in the mountains. a high snow level and lots of run off into the rivers as well. what i say el nino confuses a lot of people. warm water is there right now there is an el nino occurring. it has to phase with our winter. it's going to be a very strong one. that as strong as they get. it could even go higher than that. it has to phase with november and december. it has to be there. if that happens you have to see how far north or south that moisture travels. we could get a lot of rain.
4:38 pm
a place like there could have massive landslide and flooding. >> not just separate storms? >> you were here in 82. or were you born in 82? >> i was here in 82. are you kidding me? [ laughter ] >> 82 was crazy. in rained day after day after day. >> how to you prepare for that? >> you just clean the gutters and get ready. >> all right. >> it doesn't mean it's going to happen. it has to phase. a lot of things have to come together. >> does that help? >> yeah. >> i could go on for another ten minutes. well the drought has everybody cutting back. how far are californians willing
4:39 pm
to go to conserve? >> a by area counsel pole asked that question. -- bay area counsel pole asked that question. 63% of people said the state should build more dams. 63% supported aing this water to our drinking water supply. this is often referred to toilet to tap water. possibly for a golf courses and even car washes. >> i'm not sold on it yet. we asked you guys about this. would you be willing to drink that water? drink it or pay a $5 drought fee? >> he said it doesn't increase our water supply or ease the drought. where would that money go? people are wonder where it would
4:40 pm
go. >> she said i don't trust recycled water. did you hear about the bottled water recall? what if someone makes a mistake. hell no i don't want to recycle toilet water. pay the $5. >> [ laughter ] okay. we have more information we are gathering on that fire in the east bay. we will be right back here with more information on that fire.
4:41 pm
4:42 pm
4:43 pm
we are following soak breaking news out of -- following some breaking news out of southern california. we are now learning it just about 5-10 acres but growing. as you see very close to some homes. >> you can see the wind blowing that smoke. you have to worry about those residents. >> aerial tack under way. fire crews on the way as well. just about ten miles north of burbank or so. up here in the bay area we showed you another picture earlier. this is a fire burning in the east bay.
4:44 pm
now cal fire is responding. air tankers helicopters this is bushing kind of close to pittsburg and antioch area. we spoke with the cal fire battalion chief. it is intense out there. they are fweerg up for this -- gearing up for this to be one of the worst fire seasons we have seen. all ice on the u.s. supreme court. another set of rulings are expected to be hand down by the high court tomorrow morning. there is growing anticipation over the gay marriage. >> there are basically two issues before high court. can a state ban same-sex marriage and refuse to recognize a marriage that was legally performed in another state. >> twaktly. one of the questions here is does the 14th amendment require states to license same-sex marriages. if they decide to say yes what does that mean? it means it becomes the law of
4:45 pm
the land. just like that. now if the justices decide to say no, we don't agree with that what that what does that mean? >> the ban will remain in place. >> do states have to recognize same-sex mare ablgs from other states? -- marriages from other states? >> it means they can get married in other states and have actual benefits. now if they decide to go the other way and say no, there will be no change. it will stay as it is right now. we will keep an eye on that. big day tomorrow. it is pride week, i know there is a lot of celebration here. everyone keeping a close eye. >> it could come down around 7 a.m.. >> we will be watching. let's bring it over to mark. i know we have that fire burning
4:46 pm
in the east bay. how are the winds looking? >> winds right now gusting to right around 16 miles an hour. eve day we are going to have temperatures -- everyday we are going to have temperatures spike up. relative humidity around 35%. now what is helping us, we do not have extremely strong winds. still a bit of a breeze. we are not seeing a strong wind to help us spread that fire. still trying to get some more information. right now on live storm tracker 2, we have some low clouds and fog. it's been melting away over the past few hours. with that we have some warm temperatures report. right now it is 92 degrees in
4:47 pm
concord. livermore 91. san jose upper 70. take a look at the winds fairfield we did have a wind out of the west at 20 miles an hour. we do have a bit of a breeze out there. it's not extremely strong but it's not a weak wind either. we look at the winds because that dictates our temperature. in fact you can see bit of a chop on the bay water. you have a good idea we do have a bit of a breeze out there. tomorrow will be warm to hot. the hottest day of the week. the weekend we are thinking some high clouds move into the area from the south. for the forecast tomorrow morning some patchy fog trying to make a come back especially coast side south of the golden gate bridge. increasing sunshine and all sorts of bright colors to reflect that warmup out. there temperatures near the coast near 70 degrees.
4:48 pm
upper 90s to about 100 by 4:00 in the afternoon. a big temperature range. they start at the coast in the upper 60s. possibly as high as 102 degrees out there. high pressure in charge for your weather for thursday. talking about the high clouds approaching the bay area, that will be the case as we head into saturday. there is a slight chance of a shower here but the main action will be to the east and to the south of the bay area. lit feel muggy out there for saturday and sunday. look at all the triple digits out there. drink lots of water tomorrow. look for the tree toss seek the shade for tomorrow afternoon. you will notice that big temperature spike in the thursday forecast. san francisco just perfect out there. 76 for a forecast high in san francisco. if you are not a fan of the heat, we have good news.
4:49 pm
we are going to cool things off friday and into the weekend. thankfully tomorrow is just basically the peak of the heat all week long. >> right just one day to worry about. worker pay has been in the spotlight. we learned one ray tailer is boosting employees pay. it comes at the same time. we are learning more workers would prefer to get a root canal than ask your boss for a raise.
4:50 pm
4:51 pm
4:52 pm
today we learn one of the world's largest retailers is easing the burden by increasing wages. a new survey shows many american workers were afraid to ask for a raise. >> thank you. ikea is the latest company to raise wages for it's workers. starting in sdwran average hourly wage -- january the average wage will be $11.87. that's a 10% increase from last year. what if your company is not just give you a raise? will you ask for one? a new survey shows that 90% of people asked think that they deserve a raise but only about half the people in the study say this will ask for one this year.
4:53 pm
they say there a lot of other things they would do. 32% of the full time workers surveyed said they would rather clean the house than talk to their bosses about the raise. 13% said they would rather look for another job. analysts tat staffing firm say there are somethings you can do to arm yourself with the power to have that tough meeting. >> education and being informed about the market. not rather not you believe you deserved raise. we see almost 90% of people believe they do. what's your real market value? >> she also says confidence is a foundation of successful career. it also depends on your willingness and ability to negotiate with current and
4:54 pm
perspective employers. >> a raise may be what we need to have a rainy day fund. another new survey says nearly three in ten americans have no emergency savings. which is the highest number in five years. that's despite the fact that on average wages have steadily increased since the recession. analyst say one reason is that many people are still trying to catch up from losses during the recession. >> as bank rates say nothing helps you sleep better at night than knowing your family is safe and you have some saving for a rainy day. >> all right thank you pam. well two convicted killers are still on the loose. now there are new clues to where they have been and what they have in their possession. >> we are checking in with frank live in the newsroom now. taking a look at what story use working for for at 5:00. >> we have that developing news we are working on right now. that grass fire that is burning
