contra loma regional park. cal fire says it burned 100 acres. good evening everyone. hello. i am frank so merville. >> and i am julie haener. >> another live look at the fire. as it continues to grow, growing quickly over the past couple hours. it is burning south of highway 4 in antioch. ktvu's cristina rendon is in the mira vista mills neighborhood where the flames moved close to homes this afternoon. >> reporter: if you look you can see a firefighter at the top of the hill. the end of glendale circle and silverado drive. we told you earlier contra costa county firefighters were arriving and they made a lot of progress. they are going over a fence there into contra loma regional park. as you mentioned, the fire is getting better. that is what we are seeing. people are still outside of their homes, looking up, it looks better than it did an hour ago when we first got

here. air crews are getting a handle on it. over the past hour we have seen airplanes and helicopters drop retardant in a line that protects the homes. you can see a fire truck heading towards the entrance of the park there. there is a street where the fire truck is headed that goes into the park. they are getting as close as they can. trying to get there by foot and air. we haven't heard anything about mandatory evacuations. people are voluntary leaving. thankfully they are keeping the fire away from the homes. >> earlier at 5:00 p.m. we could see a line of flames at the top of the ridge line. now it looks like there are hardly any. that is good news. do you see any flames? >> reporter: no. the only flames we saw were the

flames we showed you in the video. cal fire dropping the retardant. fire crews doing their job. everyone doing a great job. no flames at glendale circle and silverado drive. >> we were mentioning here there are voluntary evacuations. have you seen anyone evacuate? >> reporter: we have seen people leave in their cars. we haven't been able to talk to anyone because people are rushing out. the people that are standing along the sidewalk here have left their homes but they are just waiting to see what happens. of the line of cars, these are people leaving the neighborhood. we are not sure if they are just here to look at the fire or leaving themselves. we have seen a lot of cars leaving the mira vista hills neighborhood. >> you could see a lot of smoke but when you see the pictures

now there is hardly any smoke. let's bridge in our chief meteorologist bill martin now. i imagine you feel the same way, looks like the fire is tarting to burn out -- starting to burn out. >> yeah. the terrain is doable. they had air support and the winds were favorral and the winds weren't that -- favorral and the winds -- favorable and the winds weren't that strong. temperatures 95. warmer than it was. the area. smoke was blowing this way, driving the fire into less populated areas. i wanted to point something out, on the ridge line, see here, there is a firefighter. you don't see a lot of guys

working the line between the houses. if the fire was coming the other way you would have had a line of guys lined up. those are the first two guys i have seen. these guys know what they are doing. this was in terms of a 1-10, this was a 3. couple years ago, i remember watching it going oh, my god. that was amazing work. this kind of fire, they will nail these things all day long. >> because of the winds, right? the wind is a huge factor. right now the winds are not as bad as -- [ talking at the same time ] >> it is breezy out there. 18 miles per hour. these guys -- these firefighters -- the winds -- the other night 38 miles per hour. now imagine trying to put it down at 38 miles per hour

winds. we want to down play anything. we have seen these before. >> as we have been watching we have been seeing the air support. really protecting, making a barrier. [ talking at the same time ] >> what was carry, the fire -- you could see populated areas. the reality of the fire, it was burning into an unpopulated area. >> thankfully the winds were pushing it away from homes. [ talking at the same time ] >> you won't get a wind shift on a night like this. tomorrow we will see an easterly wind and that wind could be a problem. fire winds. under 20 miles per hour, i don't freak out. it is not more than we can handle. look at the terrain, you can drive a truck on to the hill. >> all right.

we will continue a watch the situation out there and we will be back in a little bit. 1,000 people had to be evacuated from homes north of los angeles this afternoon because of another fire. this is in santa clarita. the fire is 100 acres. burning through bruschi canyon lands. you can see how close it got to homes there. the fire started on i-5 this afternoon. the flames came close to houses. wind gusts pushed the flames. aircraft are dropping water to try to get the fire under control. also a wildfire in the sierra near markleeville burned 26 square miles. doubling in size since monday. aircraft are helping fight the fire. right now it is still only 5% contained. days after a man was shot and killed on highway 4 in the east bay there has been another deadly shooting in the area.

a 19-year-old woman was killed last night at san marco boulevard in bay point. saturday's shooting happened on the freeway in the middle of the afternoon. in that shooting a 26-year-old man was killed. the contra costa county sheriff's office believes there was a relationship tweeple the suspects and the -- between the suspects and the victims and the shootings could be gang related. >> the officer of the sheriff concerned about the community. we are putting all available resources to finding those responsible. >> investigators have not released suspect descriptions and no arrests have been made. new at 6:00 p.m. a serial tagger makes a court appearance in san francisco. he is trying to get the charges reduced from felonies to misdemeanors. ktvu's noelle walker tells us victim after victim told the judge why vandalism by the tagger should be treated more seriously.

>> reporter: went he showed up for a court hearing today he said nothing but inside department 20 the victims and residents had plenty to say. >> we all suffer from graffiti. >> it is awful. >> like having dirt thrown at us. >> the tagger has left his mark. painting crist and sheep -- >> thick, red paint. >> reporter: across the city. >> sometimes he did blue. >> reporter: from market street to treasure island. >> this is one of the most agreges examples ofandivism. >> reporter: which is why they charged him with 10 felonies and 25 misdemeanor counts. today the defense asked the judge to drop the felony charges to misdemeanor. >> what example ever would warrant a felony? >> i want him to clean up graffiti. i want that to be his

punishment. >> the department of public works knows all the names. walls and fences are a tagger's year book. >> every time we turn around there is somebody knew. >> never see them. they do it while i am sleeping. >> reporter: they painted over graffiti on this wall just two days ago. >> as soon as we clean it, it is like a clean vanivist. >> reporter: it cost money to cover up graffiti but what is the fair price of justice for a serial tagger to pay? >> if he is doing the tagging, he is crying for help. >> reporter: when he said that in court, this tagger cried. >> can i ask you what about what that man said made you cry. >> reporter: he said nothing as

he left. only his father spoke. >> he is an 18-year-old. >> the judge seemed to indicate he would consider age and lack of criminal history and the judge decides whether or not to tag a young tagger with a possibility of a felony conviction for life. noelw, ktvu fox 2 news. -- noelle walker, ktvu fox 2 news. more evidence indicating the anchor bolts on the bay bridge have been exposed to salt water and that is something long term could lead to corrosion and weakening. how much effect it is having depends on who you talk to. engineers say they are caused for concerns and transportation officials say there is nothing to worry about. >> bridge is perfectly safe and it is not an issue of the bridge standing up to a very, very large earthquake -- it will not collapse. no one will die. >> a panel of the leading bridge and metal engineers is studying the problem and

as the san francisco pride celebration is about to begin a construction project just started. ktvu's rob roth tells us it is the first apartment building in san francisco that will have

services designed specifically for low income, lgbt senior citizens. >> reporter: of all the building going on in san francisco this project near market means the most to this man. >> work in progress. >> reporter: he is a gay senior with little money. the construction project will soon be 40 units of affordable housing with special services for lgbt seniors. it will be the first of its kind in san francisco. >> that is who and what i am and have been for 50 years. that i knew of. and this would have more residential. more peace. >> reporter: the project includes 79 affordable units that would be available. the housing cannot be set aside for any specific group but lgbt seniors will be encouraged to apply for the unit and the

services should make it attractive. >> isolation is pervasive. >> reporter: they say lgbt seniors are single and don't have the -- are often single and don't have the support older straight seniors may have. >> critical we create a space that is safer and more supportive and understanding of the challenges they face. for this man an opportunity to live among other seniors who share a common community is a dream come true. >> it would be nice to be around your own people. especially in your later leers of life -- years of life. >> the first 40 units should be available next summer. rob roth, ktvu fox 2 news. bay is closer to reality. crews are building a pipeline to carry recycled water to 40 commercial customers. east bay mud says this will save 400,000 gallons of drinkable water every day. if it wasn't used for irrigation it would be pumped out into the bay. >> great to see these people coming up with ways of saving water. the drought has been going on for so long. hot, nice, but -- [ talking at the same time ] >> hotter. >> yeah. tomorrow, that is the story. the weather department talking about the heat tomorrow. temperatures tomorrow, triple digits by the fire zone. 90 today. fairfield today. right now. but it will go up 10, 12 degrees tomorrow. it will be hot. winds are blowing out there.

we have seen stronger winds. sfo 23. livermore 15. you expect livermore to do more than that. temperatures tomorrow coming up. right? here is today, that is tomorrow. 95 santa rosa. livermore 101. a couple neighborhoods get into the low 100s. antioch and brentwood. fairfield. the fog is not that prominent at the coast line. it will come back tonight. tomorrow the warmest day of the week, the high pressure isn't building in in a way we get the fire winds, building in over the desert southwest, so it is pushing the heat this way. we have a onshore flow at the surface. coastal sections stay mild and the fog keeps things not too bad today. even though we will see over 100 degrees inland, san jose, the big cities will stay mild. heat advisories come when the
