well defense treaties and we will honor them. it is essential that america's word be good and so i know that this campaign has caused some questioning and some worries on the part of many leaders across the globe. i've talked with a number of them. but i want to on behalf of myself and i think on behalf of a majority of the american people say that you know, our word is good. it's also important that we look at the entire global situation. there's no doubt that we have other problems with iran but personally i'd rather deal with the other problems having put that lid on their nuclear program than still to be facing that. and donald never tells you what he would do. would he have start add war?-- st d war? bombed iran? started a deal in gives access
7:31 pm
to iranian facilities we never had before then he should tell us what his alternative would be but it's like his plan to defeat isis. he said it's a secret plan but the only secret is that he has no plan. so we need to be more precise in how we talk about these issues. people around the world follow our presidential campaigns so closely. trying to get hints bout w we w do. can they rely on us? are we going to lead the world with strength and in accordance with our values? that's what i intend to do. i intend to be a leader of our country people were count on both here at home and around the world to make decisions that will further peace and prosperity but also stand up to bullies, whether they're abroad or at home. we cannot let those who would try to destabilize the world to interfere with american

interests and security -- >> your two minutes is -- >> -- any opportunities at ale. >> lester one thing. >> quickly. >> i will go quickly. hillary will tell to you go to her website and read all about how to defeat isis which she could have defeated by never having it get going in the first place. right now it's getting tougher and tougher to defeat them because they're in more and more places more and more states more and more nigss and the a big problem. as far as japan is concerned i want to help all of our allies but we are losing billions and billions of dollars. we cannot be the policemen of the world. we cannot protect countries all over the world -- >> just a -- >> when they're not paying us what we need. >> just a few final questions here. >> and she doesn't say that because she has month business ability. we need heart, a lot of things but some basic ability and sadly she doesn't have that. all of the things she's talking about could have been taken care of during the last ten years,
7:33 pm
let's say, while she had great care of but they weren't taken care of. if she ever wins this ray they won't be taken care of. >> mrs. clinton is the first female nominated. recently you said she doesn't have a presidential look. what did you mean by that? >> doesn't have the look or the stamina. i said she doesn't have the stamina, and i don't believe she does have the stamina to be president of this country, you need tremendous stamina. >> the quote was i just don't think she has the presidential look. >> wait a minute. you asked me a question. you have to be able to negotiate our trade deals. you have to be able to negotiate -- that's right, with japan. with saudi arabia. i mean can you imagine, we're defending saudi arabia and with all of the money they have we're defending them and they're not paying? all you have to do speak to them. wait. you have so many different things you have to be able to do and i don't believe that
7:34 pm
hillary has the stamina. >> let's let her respond. >> well as soon as he travels to 112 countries and negotiates a peace deal a cease-fire a release of dissidents and an opening of new opportunities in nations around the world, or even spends 11 hours testifying in front of a congressional committee, he can talk to me about stamina. >> world let me tell you -- let me tell you -- hillary has experience, but it's bad experience. we have made so many bad deals during the last -- so she's got experience that i agree but it's bad. bad experience. whether it's the iran deal that you're so in love with where we gave them $150 billion back whether it's the iran deal whether it's anything you -- you almost can't name a good deal. i agree. she's got experience but it's bad experience. and this country can't afford to
7:35 pm
have another four years of that kind of experience. >> we are at the -- we are at the final question -- >> one thing, lester is -- >> the final question now. >> he tried to switch from looks to stamina. but this is a man who has called women pigs slobs and dogs and someone who has said pregnancy is an inconvenience to employers, who has -- >> i nerve said that. >> that women don't deserve equal pay unless they do as good a job as men and one of the worst things he said was about a woman in a beauty contest, he loves beauty contests supporting them and hangsing around them, and he called his woman miss piggy. then he called her miss housekeeping because she was latina. donald she has a name. >> where did you find this? >> her name is -- >> where did you find this. >> she has become a u.s. citizen and you can bet.
7:36 pm
>> oh really. >> she's going to vote this nofr. >> okay good. let me just tell you -- >> mr. trump, ten seconds and the final question. >> hillary is hitting me with tremendous commercials. some of it said in entertainment. some of it said somebody who's been very fishsvicious to me. rosie o'donnell. i said tough things to her, she deserves it and nobody feels sorry for her. the truth is i was going to say something -- >> very quick. >> extremely rough to hillary, to her family and i said to myself i can't do it. i just can't do it. it's inappropriate. it's not nice. but she spent hundreds of millions of dollars on negative ads on me many of which are about sluntlysolutely untrue and misrepresentations and i will tell you this lester it's not nice and i don't -- and i don't deserve that but the certainly not a nice thing that she's done. it's hundreds of millions of ads and the only gratifying thing is
7:37 pm
i saw the polls come in today, and with all of that money -- >> we have to move on to the final question. >> with the money spent and the either winning or tied and i spent practically nothing. >> one of you will not win this election. my final question to you tonight, are you willing to accept the outcome as the will of the voters? secretary clinton? >> i support our democracy, and sometimes you win. sometimes you lose. but i certainly will support the outcome of this election. and i know donald's trying very hard to plant doubts about it but i hope the people out there understand this election is really up to you. it's not about us. so much as it is about you, and your families and the kind of country and future you want. so i sure hope you will get out and vote as though your future depended on it, because i think it does. >> mr. trump, quickly, same question. will you accept the outcome? >> i want to make america great
7:38 pm
again. we are a nation that is seriously troubled. we're losing our jobs. people are pouring into our country. the other day we were deporting 800 people and perhaps they passed the wrong button pressed the wrong button or perhaps worse than that it was corruption but these people we going to deport for good reason ended up becoming citizens ended up becoming citizens. and it was 800 and now it turn tos out it might be 1,800 and they don't even know. >> will you accept -- >> i want to make in america great again. i'm goin' to be able to do it i don't believe hillary will. the answer is i absolutely would support her. >> that concludes our debate for this evening. covered a lot of ground. we covered a lot, not everything. in st. louis is the next debate and october 19th, university of nevada, las vegas. the conversation will continue. a reminder the vice presidential debate is scheduled
7:39 pm
for october 4th at longwood university in farmville, virginia. my thanks to hillary clinton and to donald trump and to hofstra university for hosting us tonight. good night, everyone. well, the first presidential debate of 2016 among primary candidates is over and it appears everyone survived. beyond that we were expecting a fiery hour and a half and as lester holt put it a moment ago, we got it. certainly spirited. and filled with at many times i
7:40 pm
thought, matters of substance. some pretty deep talk on taxes and how to spend them. how to collect them. how to report your own. a lot of discussion about nato and iran. the way we come at treaties and the money that's been paid to iran. the war in iraq was, hoond was for it who was against it was a matter of contention and the fight against the islamic state, ongoing fight against the islamic state a matter of division among the two candidates as well. of course given the times we live race and police relations were very much at the forefront, and secretary clinton and donald trump with different proposals for how to tackle that situation. nuclear pro liveration and contain tamt containment by lester holt. and local policing tactics threatened to go national and ruled unconstitutional part of the conversation and foreign policy and defense and in the

comport himself very well. >> we will get more analysis in a few moments but we will send it back over to you. you are watching live coverage here on presidential debate newscast for those of you just joining us. we want to fill you in on what happened during the debate between the canned dafrnts. >> some of the topics and punches thrown. we will get into it all with the political analysts. we have two of them we are going to be talking about things with. we will have launch party coverage from san francisco. we will have a live report from long a land. let's go to long island. >> this is really interesting we were wondering how they were
7:46 pm
going to come out. let's play the first piece of tape. the actually first exchange for first interaction the candidate is had earlier this evening. take a look. (tape is played. . ). >> finally we are on the stage together, donald trump and i. donald, it's good to be with you. we're going to have a debate where we are talking about the important issues facing our country. you have to judge us. who can shoulder the immense awesome responsibilities of the press evens. >> in all fairness to secretary clinton, yes, is that okay? >> i want you to be very happy. (laughing). >> when she greets him you can see the nan her face. when he's talking to her about how to address her properly you can see the pain in her face. what kind of beginning is that?
7:47 pm
they both appear for nervous than we expected. >> not one mr. trump in the entire 90 minutes. >> that's essentially the same observation. it was donald then he counter with -- essentially what do you want me to call you? secretary okay? you know (laughing), agree with the assessment. i hate to use a sports analogy. boxers who come out and jab each other and see about the as a vulnerabilities and then it started picking up. >> we will start on the analogy. soon the punches started. they started over isis. >> i have a plan to fight isis. >> no, no, you're telling the enemy everything you want to do. you're telling the enemy everything you want no wonder you've been fighting isis your entire adult life. >> that's -- fact checkers get
7:48 pm
to work. >> americans, i would like you to further defend and mr. trump you're calling for tax cuts for the welt thee. >> i thought it was really interesting exchange. that was one of the first heated moments i think within the first 15 minutes. look at hillary clinton she had to go into this and be more likeable and not be so hard, hard, hard. she's actually smiling what do you think? >> she had to do something else tonight and that is take the focus off her own ambitions to be president and that sorts of thing and become the commander in chief. what she's going to be doing for the american people. i thought she advanced that ball pretty well tonight. >> what do you think james? ? >> i thought hillary clinton did a great job and donald trump held his own. how the media intrepts the debate will be the major outcome. >> we saw a big smile on hillary clinton's face and it will be interesting to see how the public reacts to that. we'll send it back to heather
7:49 pm
and ken. all right. it was, dubbed the most watched presidential debate in history. we will get the numbers and see how many people tuned in. we have a team of reporters that are out there covering this from very many ang yels including live on long island. we want to go to our own amber lee. >> heather, we are inside the hotel in downtown san francisco. even though the debate wrapped up a few minutes ago. there are a few people lingering and talking. it is a nonpart son watch party. i went around the room and found mostly registered democrats and mostly decided voters but definitely some un decided. now it forum division of the commonwealth club ko host of the event was bring grady a network for voters and the founder is with me. what's your reaction to the debate, any surprises?
7:50 pm
>> no, no big surprises i think despite the cheerz in the room tonight i think the reality is it was more of a draw than voters on either side would probably want to admit. i think the candidates were talking a very different audiences extremely polar eyed and operating from very different set of facts. so for that reason, at bring grady.com we're talking about down ballot races right now and helping people understand what's going to locally. >> when i went around the room, most of the answer was no to the question will it sway you. >> that's right i think it was a good debate. we were happy to host this. it was a good opportunity to bring people together and make sifshg engagement of social experience and make it fun and engaging for people. >> reporter: thank you, mat, this event hosted by the bring
7:51 pm
7:53 pm
we have no leadership and honestly, that starts with secretary clinton. >> all right you have 2 minutes of the same question to defend tax increases on the wealthy roast americans. >> i have a feeling by the end of the evening i'll be blamed for everything that's ever happened. >> why not? >> yeah, why not? ? donald trump and hillary clinton going head to head in
7:54 pm
their first presidential debate. the presidential debate is going viral. these are the trending hash tags right from the bay area and no unusual words up here. no big surprises. >> debate night is the number 1 trend on twitter with the candidate's names and obama got in there as well but everything else is trump and hillary and trin every clinton. so far 17 people in any group say hillary is wing. three say trump, tax question weakened him, birther question destroyed him. >> lib terence candidate gather johnson live tweeting during the debate as you see on the screen. we also want to take a look at the minute by minute issues search to google. it is going from one to 10. this is all changing as the two candidates were discussing these issues. >> the one good thing voter
7:55 pm
registration people are getting involved and they want to participate and a lot of people have made up their minds who they will vote for but some haven't. this is key for both candidates getting the people out to the polls to vote on election day. let's take a little bit more of a lifb to what the candidates had to say tonight. >> and i don't believe that hillary has the stamina. >> as soon as he travls to 112 countries and negotiates a peace deal, a seize fire, a release of dis dense and opening of new opportunities and nation around the world or even spends 11 hours testifying in front of a con egyptianal economy he can talk to me about stamina. it gets personal when they face off on whether she is ready and able to be president. that question of stamina. we want to head over to political reporter ross who had
7:56 pm
a chance to take a look at the entire debate. i thought the stamina question was pretty interesting. there were some people who weren't sure if trump would go there given what happened with hillary clinton and her bout with pneumonia ma, what do you think about that? >> i think that's a little ridiculous i don't think there's any voter that hillary clinton doesn't have stamina to be commander in chief. i think this is un veiled attempt for him to further sort of further these outright ideas there's some secret illness she is trying to hide and i don't think anyone in the bay area will really buy anything like that. and i'm a little surprised that he went there. >> reporter: what about the fact checking of this debate? was there a lot of miss information put out? >> well, you know he had plenty to say about the emails and that's such a newarky issue. it's hard to fact check those sorts of things. she made many allegations about
7:57 pm
his financial and business past. i think many people are well ee kwantd with all those details and no fact checking is probably necessary. many studies have shown donald trump has been the most inaccurate when you compare the two so we'll see if that bears to be true tomorrow yet again. we know that's what many reporters will be looking at the statements comparing them and getting the facts for all of you. we are out of time. thanks for joining us. tune in for complete coverage on the ktvu 10:00 news. have a good night.
