good evening. i'm heather holmes. >> i'm ken wayne. we begin with a big giants win that sends the teams in to the playoffs for a quest for another world series trophy. the champagne was flowing in the giants' clubhouse today after they won four straight must-win games and defeated their arch rival l.a. dodgers today at at&t park 7-1. the victory sends the giants to new york where they'll face the mets in a one-game wildcard playoff. the giants will send pitcher madison bumgarner to the ground. if the giants win the game they'll head on to chicago to take on the sox in the series. the last time the giants made it to the world series in 2014 by winning a wildcard playoff in pittsburgh then going on to win

the championship. sports director mark ibanez will have all the highlights in just a few minutes. the 49ers were also in action today. colin kaepernick and other 49ers continued to protest during the national anthem to protest oppression in america. and several black community leaders in silicon valley also took a knee. ktvu was at the stadium where issues beyond football were discussed. >> reporter: in a gesture of support for colin kaepernick's national anthem protest, this crowd took a knee and raised a fist outside of levi's stadium. fans walking by had mixed reactions. demonstrators say they're asking more people to join kaepernick and not stand for the national anthem until police brutality is addressed in america. >> i hear people are in the stands taking a knee or some refuse to stand up in solidarity. but unfortunately that's not what makes the news.

>> reporter: we see nfl players on the field taking a knee but are fans in the stands also not standing up when the anthem is played? >> you stopped to take a picture but when the national anthem is going to be played, are you going to take a seat? >> i don't know. >> i'll take my hat off of course and kneel. >> i believe it's a good cause and now it just needs to continue and people need to be peaceful protesting. >> reporter: dallas cowboys fans also weighed in. >> it's their right. they can do whatever they want. i stand up for the flag. that's why i live in this beautiful country. >> i support what he represents but i think he should do something different. >> reporter: even fans wearing kaepernick's number 7 jersey say they support him but can't join his national anthem protest. >> i support my country 100% and i will take off my hat and hold my hand on my heart. but i believe in kaepernick. >> reporter: one demonstrator

says the gesture doesn't mean much without the conversation. >> we would love for people to be able to take a knee but i'm more concerned with what they do once they get home. when they get home, do they google police brutality. do they decide to start conversations on their own? do they decide to speak out against prejudicial or racial comments made by others in their community? >> the protest was peaceful but also short before the game started today and the demonstrators say they hope the demonstrations of kneeling doesn't just rest with the football players on the field, that hopefully some of the media cameras will capture some people in the stands actually kneeling during the national anthem. back to you. now to the bay area weather. there was some light rain showers in san francisco this morning. temperatures were a bit cooler than in recent days. ktvu's mark tamayo is here with some areas that saw rainfall.

>> even a few thunderstorms popping up parts of the bay area this afternoon primarily for the early portion of the afternoon. as a result, you can see the numbers adding up. concernville, .20. napa, .08. brentwood, they had a thunderstorm roll through the area by midafternoon, receiving .06. san francisco, barely measurable but only showing you .01. the bulk of the activity was focused to the north and to the east. you can see the satellite and radar loop over the past few hours. we'll come in closer right now and show you this out toward the sierra first. we actually had snow showers reported up above 6,000 feet. we're starting to see snow and a winter weather advisory in place for the mountains. we have a pretty good thunderstorm around chico. thunderstorms to our east. as far as the coverage here in the bay area, not a lot to show you right now. here's the radar loop. you can see the thunderstorm across parts of the east bay and

south bay, just scattered clouds paying the area a visit. here's our live camera looking toward san francisco bay and the bay bridge. lingering cloud build-ups in the distance. the slight chance of a shower but keep the umbrella on standby. look what happens tomorrow. could be tracking more showers across parts of the bay area. we'll have more on that coming up in a few minutes. an investigation is underway after someone fired several shots at concord police head caerts. several people including 911 dispatchers heard the gunfire right outside the building on gelindo spreet. officers found one bullet hit the entrance of the building. it's since reopened. no injuries were reported and no suspected were located. a coast guard crew found the body of a kayaker missing in san francisco bay. the remains were found by coast guard helicopter about 3:00 this morning near san mateo bridge. the kayaker put out about 4:00

in the afternoon with two other kayakers. the 38-year-old man went missing near san francisco airport and a search was started. there's no word yet on a cause of death and the victim's identity has not been released. the faith community in the east bay today opened its doors to members of the berkeley's first congregational church. that church damaged by the huge fire on friday. parishioners were welcomed at the nearby first presbyterian church for sunday services. their building on channing way was gutted by fire. a church spokesman told us along with the tears, there was thankfulness for the congregation's sense of community. >> it's an opportunity to dream. the building will rise again in to something different and something wonderful and we're looking forward to that. >> firefighter narrowly escaped injury during that blaze that may have been started by a work crew there on the roof. there's no word yet on how long

repairs or rebuilding right take. supporters of republican presidential nominee donald trump fanned out on the political talk shows today defending new allegations that trump didn't pay taxes for 18 years. >> the reality is he's a genius. he took advantage of something that could save his enterprise and he did something we admire in america. he came back. >> i think it's outrageous and i think it speaks to one of the issues that secretary clinton is talking about, i have talked about. we have massive income and wealth inequality in this country today. rich are getting richer. almost everybody else is getting poorer. billionaires like donald trump are able to manipulate the tax system so they avoid paying federal income tax. >> a new york times article out yesterday cited a 1995 tax return that shows trump claimed almost a billion dollars in

losses. the trump camp ape is not denying the report but said trump didn't do anything illegal. hillary clinton went to church this sunday in charlotte, north carolina. clinton attended services at the little rock ame zion church. clinton was invited by faith leaders there to hear from community members and families. racial tensions have been high in charlotte ever since the deadly police shooting of a black man named keith lamont scott last month. >> so many fathers and sons and even mothers and daughters who have died either after encounters with the police or at the hands of civilians with guns while they were doing things that were ordinary everyday activities. >> clinton called off the trip to charlotte that was scheduled for last week after the shooting because city officials said they had their hands full with protests there.

clinton's running mate tim kaine was also at church this morning. kaine and his wife are parishioners at st. elizabeth catholic church in richmond, virginia. kaine will face off with mike pence on tuesday in the only vice presidential debate. we'll have much more on that coming up a little bit later in this newscast. today was a big day in the sports world. football, baseball playoffs. sports director mark ibanez here with more. >> if you love bay area sports, this was the day to relish. got to give you a prop or two, ken. >> always the optimist. >> he's been the optimist about the giants and man, we had some champagne flowing out there. who would have thought that a couple weeks ago? san francisco giants popping corks. you know who has reason to celebrate as well? raiders fans as that team goes out on the road again. they're off to a fine start in this season. 49er highlights and a live report from joe fonzi with all the sports coming back at you.

how's it going, everybody? i'm mark ibanez. a couple weeks ago giants fans probably didn't see this moment coming but you talk about putting off your best ball to the last possible minute. you can tangibly feel the energy and emotion returning to the giants dug-out and it has as they rip out four wins. the greatest to play the game will say goodbye to the greatest ever to play-by-play. vin scully and willie mays shake hands, and a permanent plaque to be dedicated to vin scully. the giants let it be known it would be their afternoon. buster posey starting to come alive with the rbi bat. got himself a two-run single. span and belt scoring and we're at 2-0 in the 2nd. denard span, largely a

disappointment this year but coming through here in the clutch, off the wall in right, got himself a two-run triple. conor gillaspie and matt moore score. and it's a 4-0 san francisco lead early. buster again, he wasn't through with his afternoon. three rbis and just hitting the ball right where it's pitched, right center field. got himself a base hit and the giants basically coast in after building up a 5-0 lead. matt moore, eight innings, gave up three hits and he had help but why should i describe it when you've got the greatest ever to tell you about the giants defense this afternoon. >> his jubilant call had been preserved forever. the pitch to utley is popped up. fouled off. coming over, looking, leaning, and making a superior catch. tumbling over the railing. conor gillaspie. umpire says out. what a play by conor.

>> a superior catch it was. then the giants just cruise on in, 7-1. again, matt moore, great pitching performance. four wins in a row to end the regular season and clinch a wildcard ride to new york city. the giants rest and rehabilitate but first a little chance to celebrate this afternoon. this is jason applebaum with the full report. he was saying giants were going to get hot near the end and they surely have and they're still alive at least for one more game. >> in fairness to you, i thought they'd rip off, what, 10, 11 in a row but four was all that was needed. by the way, first four-game winning streak of the 2nd half of the season since the all star break. obviously all quiet here now. about two hours ago though, this place was absolutely electric with chants of "let's go giants" on the field. want to show you what it looked like from down below here when

the final out was registered, they had the hat, the post seasons hats and the t-shirts ready to bring up to the field when the final out happened and as we made our way out to the field, you see the team on the field celebrating. you looked on their faces and it was a lot of love and a lot of relief i think on the giants. this wasn't easy getting here. it probably makes it even more special even though it's just a one-game playoff. after the game the fans stayed around. jake peavey addressed the giants faithful, said no way they won't be back for at least another game here, another two games. of course that means they'll have to beat the mets wednesday in queens. first thing's first, the giants celebrating big time today. >> we're right on the path to where we want to be. >> definitely a thrilling ride to go all the way up, happy to win. it's exciting. >> we struggled for a little bit but at the same time we had

faith the entire time we could do this. we never got down on ourselves. and it's just a matter of picking it up when we get to october. and i think no team does it better than we do. >> we have a good team. we were confident the whole time we were going to get in to the postseason. we knew we had to play good baseball the last week and we did that. we have a lot of experience on this team. when we need to win, we get wins. no matter how it happens. >> we're in the postseason. it doesn't matter how you get in. you're proud. i'm proud of this group of guys in here. i'm excited. just right now we're all kind of probably trying to soak in this a little bit, but at the same time got our eyes a little bit on new york and going over there and taking care of business. >> this is a photo i took in the clubhouse. i think it pretty much says it all. if you look at those faces, everybody pure joy. but as we said, now it's on to the mets on wednesday. it's going to be madison bumgarner and noah syndergaard.

by the way, before the game today, bruce bochy told the team pack your bags for a long trip. meaning he predicted the giants would be moving on. and he knew they'd be playing at least in st. louis tomorrow but they don't have to do that anymore because they clinched that second spot outright and it will be on to the mets on wednesday. mark, back to you. >> way to go, jason. i commend you as well for not saying anything about this is an even year. we welcome you back. for all the naysayers who didn't think the raiders were going to be a playoff contender, everyone knew they had to get off to a great start to keep everybody from saying here we go again, same over raiders. out on the road, a tough schedule. three of their first four away from home. up 13-12. 3rd and 8. michael crabtree. great combination. absolutely lit up. but he hung on to the football, 21-12. you're thinking maybe they'll finally have an easy one. but nothing easy for the silver and black. joe flacco spotting steve smith. still around. clutch catch. hangs on to it and he is gone. 52-yard touchdown. he had eight catches for 111 yards. the raider lead dwindles to just 21-19. and it would get worse. huge mistake will follow.

stop the clock. there's your final and the 49ers lose one where they had a 14-0 lead. final score, 24-17. they're 1-3. blaine gabbert on the short end again. we have joe fonzi standing by at levi. joe, i guess some physical mistakes and a mental error with a costly penalty. kind of helped turn the momentum around the cowboys' way in the 1st half, particularly in the 1st quarter. 49ers were dominating and they couldn't put the hammer down and nail these guys when it looked like they were going to have a home victory. joe, your thoughts? >> no question about it. it was all 49ers most of the 1st half. in fact, they had just about stopped the cowboys. it was the third down play. prescott was sacked but there was a penalty called on tart. that kept the drive alive. that allowed the cowboys to score their first touchdown. that was the first big momentum changer as the cowboys scored 14 points quickly. they make the game even headed in to the locker room.

then there was another big momentum changer in the 2nd half. it was the 3rd quarter. the 49ers trailed by 4. but they had great field position as result of a jeremy curly punt return. gabbert goes for it all on 1st down. pass is underthrown and intercepted. 49ers had great field position with a chance to potentially go in for a leading touchdown. instead it gave the cowboys good field position and it was really all dallas from that point forward. it was something chip kelly talked about, that one particular throw after the game. >> i thought blaine played well. i've got to see the film. i don't know if he has a chance to step up in the pocket and make the play. i thought blaine played a good game. >> so that's the real key. there are a lot of people saying what's up with the quarterback situation after three games? now after four you could probably hear those voices again but after the game he was very happy with the effort by blaine gabbert. no quarterback change in the

back now to the presidential election. hillary clinton and donald trump's running mates are getting ready for the first and only vice presidential debate coming up on tuesday. garrett has more from both candidates about what you can expect. >> you can expect this tuesday's vice presidential debate will look a lot different than what we saw last week between donald trump and hillary clinton. clinton's running mate virginia senator tim kaine describes himself as boring while trump's number two indiana governor mike pence calls him a d list republican celebrity. vice presidential debates have

historically had little impact on the election. neither candidate is taking it for granted. you can expect to see two distinct strategies unfold. pence will spend a lot of time going after hillary clinton for her e-mail scandals and the appearance of corruption between her state department and the clinton foundation. >> it's important that we talk about the record. and i'm looking forward to that debate on tuesday night. this election is about a choice. and people need to think really hard about the record that hillary clinton brings on the foreign stage. >> reporter: on the other side, kaine is expected to force pence to defend donald trump's receipt statements including comments about a former miss universe contestant who trump criticized for gaining weight. after running through several mock debates this week, kaine says he's feeling confident. >> it's good. just got to be myself. i'll look forward to seeing you down there on tuesday. it's intense but i'm calm. things work out the way they're supposed to. i'm calm. see you down there. >> tim kaine will have a bit of a home field advantage at this

debate which is being hosted at longwood university in virginia. the 90-minute debate will begin at 9 p.m. eastern. garrett tenney, fox news. one of george bush's daughters is showing support for hillary clinton. barbara attended a fundraiser. this picture was taken on instagram with the hashtag, i'm with her. young barbara bush is not the first member of the former first family to support clinton. her grandfather, george h.w. bush said he will vote for clinton and jeb bush said he will not vote for trump. the mother of a 6-year-old fatally shot spoke about her son hours after he died. jacob hill was removed from life support yesterday. a 14-year-old boy is accused of

is not functioning properly. investigators trying to find the second device. this all comes as the national transportation safety board tries to get to the bottom of that crash. that left one dead and more than 100 injured. laura ingle has more including new information of what's coming to light about a long history of violations in the new jersey train system. >> reporter: a federal audit of new jersey transit conducted this year reportedly found dozens of violations including trains over running switches and signals and lapses in safety protocols in train yards. the federal railroad administration had reportedly been considering enforcement action against new jersey transit prior to the hoboken terminal crash which happened thursday morning injuring over 100. anonymous sources reportedly familiar with the investigation say the audit coincided with an increase in concerning incidents at the new jersey railroad which had seen 10 slow speed accidents this year and 25 accidents in

2015. from 2013 to 2015, new jersey transit agreed to pay nearly $335,000 in penalties for 33 violations of federal safety regulations. in this current investigation, 48-year-old thomas gallagher, the train's engineer, was interviewed saturday, but the ntsb says we won't hear about the content of their sit-down until all of the other crew members are interviewed. an inspection of the tracks found nothing that would have affected the train's performance and there were no signal problems found on the tracks leading to the terminal. all this preliminary information amplifies the main question, how could this have happened? as we wait for that answer, workers here at the terminal can be seen pulling terminals and wires. the main goal, to get this transportation hub back together again and make conditions safe enough so engineers can pull the train off the tracks. in hoboken, new jersey, laura ingle, fox news. new information tonight about the timeline for the

dozens of people were killed this morning in a stampede during a religious celebration in ethiopia. witnesses say the celebration turned in to a violent anti-government protest. witnesses report hearing protesters chant anti-government slogans as they threw plastic bottles at speakers on the stage. months of anti-government protests have drawn international concern toward the african nation. british prime minister theresa may said today britain would start to leave the european union by the end of may. mrs. may said britain would fight any legal challenges to derail that move. the prime minister also said she would ask parliament to repeal the european communities act

different cultures increases awareness and acceptance and they're able to bridge the gaps people may experience. there may be new hope for the millions of people in the u.s. who suffer from migraines. the university of chicago is testing new treatment that can make chronic headaches vanish. >> it's awful. it's excruciating. it's like you don't have a life. you're just existing. in addition to that you're living in fear. >> reporter: that fear is of a migraine headache, something even the doctor suffers from. >> it's a very severe pain, oftentimes throbbing. occurring on one side of the head. lots of times behind the eye. you'll do anything to get rid of the pain. >> reporter: at the cedar cross research center a study called promise one is hoping to give migraine sufferers the relief they've been looking for. the drug is called ald403.

it's given to a patient through an iv once for an hour every three months. it is now in phase 3 of the trial before it goes to the food and drug administration for approval. that approval could come in the next two to three years. but for potential trial patients like christine spiller, this drug could be a lifeline. >> if it means for me to get my life back, that's what it means for me. for me to live and not just exist, which is what i've basically been doing. >> reporter: the reason spiller feels this way is because of the stats. one of the studies looked at people with chronic migraines, meaning someone who has at least 15 per month. >> on treatment, a third of the group showed a 75% reduction in migraine headaches and about 10%, 1 out of 10, showed about 100%. they stopped having migraines. so it's pretty impressive. >> reporter: spiller is hoping to join this study even at risk of receiving placebo over the actual drug. >> there are so many people that

palo alto based tesla motors said delivery of its cars more than doubled in the 3rd quarter to 25,500 compared to a year ago. the company said almost 16,000 of the model s vehicles and 8700

model x sport utility vehicles were delivered to customers in the latest quarter. additionally about 5500 vehicles were in transit to customers but won't be counted as deliveries till the 4th quarter. cal fire says the loma fire is 66% contained and has grown to seven square miles. the fire was started on monday, has destroyed 28 buildings including a dozen homes in the santa cruz mountains. mandatory evacuations remain in effect for the loma prieta ridge line. firefighters say cooler temperatures yesterday and today are making their job a little easier but they're also concerned about the wind picking up again and blowing embers in to unburned grass and trees. monterey county district attorney is warning fire victims to watch out for scammers as they try to rebuild. prosecutors say there could be several scams including charity fraud, price gouging, and insurance scams. so far at least one person has been arrested for sending out fraudulent invoices for fire extinguishers.

chico area as you can see, a lot of lightning strikes detect would the radar there. back here in the bay area, not a lot of shower coverage out there with partly cloudy skies and a bit of a breeze. we had this one cell pop up in parts of the north bay moving out toward portion of brentwood and martinez earlier this afternoon but things fairly quiet out there right now. current numbers show you 68 in san jose. 66, livermore. novato, 61. san francisco, 60 degrees. quick update on a major earthquake. as you can see, hurricane matthew with winds of 145 miles per hour. you'll be hearing a lot about this hurricane over the next couple of days. here is the track, possibly over 20 inches of rain for portions of haiti and the dominican republic. so this is monday and in to tuesday. and we'll have to keep an eye on this hurricane later in the week for wednesday and thursday, approaching the bahamas. we'll keep an eye on what is now a powerful hurricane matthew. back here in the bay area, looking out toward san jose, relatively clear skies with

partly cloudy conditions. overnight lows first thing tomorrow morning, a cool start. temperatures in the 40s to low 50s with the chance of a few scattered showers out there. in fact here's our sky cast, 7 a.m. monday in san francisco showing you mostly cloudy skies. you'll see a few showers falling from those clouds. chance of showers at 12:00 and later in the day by 3:00 and 4:00 as well. cool weather pattern remains in place for one more day. as you can see today, the cold front moving across the bay area. we have moisture, showers move in from the pacific for tomorrow so with that, the chance of scattered showers, definitely clouds out there. and then beginning tuesday, wednesday, and thursday, that low moves out. high returns. we're really warming up the numbers especially by thursday and friday. warmest locations back up in to the 80s. here's our forecast model. the short-term. there's a chance of a shower here in the bay area. then tomorrow morning, lots of clouds out there. you'll see this activity beginning to develop. throughout the morning hours, maybe a few popup showers in parts of the north bay.

preparations are underway for the start of san francisco's fleet week and earlier today a landing craft delivered supplies near the bayview boat club south of at&t park. the supplies are for a training drill set for tomorrow. in that training exercise, local agencies will team up with military personnel to practice how they'll work together in the event of a major earthquake. >> basically bring all the first responders, all the emergency managers from across the bay area to train with the visiting service personnel so they learn from each other and they know

what their capabilities are during times of disaster and they'll be able to help the communities when the big one hits. >> fleet week's biggest attraction is however the air show and this year's organizers have expanded the air show to three days instead of two. the blue angels will perform friday, saturday, sunday at 3:00 each afternoon. other planes and jets will also take to the air as early as noon on those days. in the wine country the 2016 grape harvest is well underway. the warmer weather last week meant cabernet and merlot grapes are starting to come off the vine. rosemary orozco spent the day seeing the process start to finish. >> sounds like you're incredibly pleased with this year's outcome. >> it's been a fantastic harvest so far. we're about 60% done. >> how has weather played a role? >> great. we started off very early. we started on august 8th of our sparkling wine. then we had a cool august. and that kind of put on the brakes for a while and slowed us down. then as you know we had 100-degree heat in the first part of this week so that kind

of got us all excited again and picked everything up but the vines and grapes have come through that heat wave pretty well. >> so the folks were out here picking all night long in to the early morning hours? >> correct. the crews like to get started at night. nice and cool for them. then the grapes are nice and cool. dropped off in the winery. now we can head off to the winery and see what happens there. >> so 40 tons. they'll knock out the entire 40 tons? >> today. yes. our goal is to get it all in the winery by the end of the day. >> what is going on here? >> this is a very simple part of the wine making process. very old process. called the pump over. what we're trying to do is extract all the flavor, the body, and color from the grapes. >> from the picking to the making and now to the tasting, you may be surprised to know that the winemakers actually is responsible for just about everything from the dirt to the bottle. >> yep. now we're full circle. you saw how it was made.

now we get to enjoy the fruits of our labor. >> cheers. >> this without a doubt is fabulous wine but there you say are years when you're not so pleased with it. >> sure. there are vintage differences. if we have a cold year or a lot of rain in the vintage, fortunately in california we don't have to deal with it too much because we have a very great climate. then it's just a little extra work for us. we have more time in the vineyard, more time in the winery and kind of shepherded it through the wine making process and get every ounce of flavor of the grapes that we can. >> it's no longer customary to crush the grapes in this manner. the family gave me the opportunity and i couldn't resist. >> there she is crushing the grapes the old school way. >> she seemed to really like the tasting part of that story a lot. >> i think i would too had that been my assignment.
