reuss be dents -- residents were staying. she was sleeping. she says that she believe that's one of her other friends and other -- another tenant who lived there did not survive. he did not knack out of the fire on friday night. she says that situation at that warehouse was a couple of different campers a couple of different rooms fortress dent artist that's stayed there. they -- she said she was woken but -- up by the smell of smoke and a glow coming from a door. she believes that the store store -- fire started in a very back room of the warehouse. she believed it might be possibly electrical. according to her, she was surprised she swears that there were smoke detectors in the warehouse. firefighters said there were not. >> i started to call 911.

a minute later the power p went out. -- went out. so many people were in the tophic -- dark. people have to -- had to escape in the dark. reporter: the party was health -- held on the skid floor -- second floor. there were several different rooms you could go into to escape some of the musician -- music if you wanted to have a quiet spot for tea and sit down and talk. you could go there. officials are very frustrated. they don't know how much -- how many people attended the tarty -- party and the number of victims they have recovered has surprised even the emergency crews. >> when we started this investigation if you would have told us we would have 33 victims we wouldn't have believed you. we have no idea how many more people in there.

gives you an idea of how difficult a time it is. because of this fire and the victims of this fire. the man we spoke with who did survive is staying with friends. he psi says that he was not attending the event but he lived on the first floor. he was up on the loft watching television that night. the fire happened and he had no idea it started in many someone yelled out there was a fire. someone yes, ma'amed get out now seconds later. he rushed to get wuvenl his dogs. he went back to get second dog. by then smoke filled the living space he was reaching around on the bed until he could seal seal -- feel the dog. he grabbed them both made it to the hallway. ran into a woman an -- and he also helped her out. >> she didn't say anything. all i saw were her eyes. she was very scared.

didn't know where she should be going too -- to. so i was trying show her by you know, like pushing -- like nudging her towards in the drecks was going to. -- direction i was going to. >> this was an area where a lot of art -- artists would come and share ideas and experiences and they put on numerous events so they could get the word out about the living space area. but gerngs he did not attend the event friday night only lived there on the first floor. he showed us pictures on the facebook page showing the inside and the art. and the entire first floor on the living space was very small but it's what he had and he really is going to miss that. he lost everything in that fire. but he know that's so many more families are hurting. he is is up -- upset he couldn't go back in and help

others escape. once he was outside there was black smoke billowing out of the windows. is -- it was not safe for him to go back in there and try and rescue anyone else he said. back out here, this is a growing memorial pore -- here for all the victims. buick yeas of roses. candle leas and messages. a variety of names. we love you and miss you. those names have yet to be confirmed. we are waiting for official word from authorities on ha who the victims are, where they lived how old they are. i spoke with a man from chico. he confirmed his daughter died in the fire. donna kellogg of oakland did die. he didn't wanted to share a photo or say anything more. his family was grieving and

then -- they requested privacy. and people who have shown up here may know some of the people in the building. they are requesting their privacy at this time. they have say it's a very difficult time for them. they don't want to speak just yet. they are sect media to respect their privies yichlt they are hoping they can come toopth and cope through something like this. they have never sxeernsd something like that before. aiming the artists lived together and were friends. multiple people coming into and out of building. how many people are now wore delayed warehouses around oakland and artist space wills be affected by this going into the future if it is charmed there were different things going on or things weren't up to code in the building. >> it's a heart breaking story. so many people affected. there will be a candlelight vigil at lake h -- merritt

it was skits -- decided it cannot be built. federal officials will not allow a permit for it cross under a lake. the people in the standing rock sioux tribe are considering this a victory but it's not over some say. rallies in solidarity have been old -- held across the country cluing here? red wood city, firefighters were called to the three-storim structure fire on vista drive this afternoon. crews battling the flames from the outside rather than the inside of the building. they worry parts of the building could clays -- collapse. no worry on what started the fire. apple has issued a hint they are ready to be a player in the self-driving car market.
