[laughter] and right after she finished, i took the dish. i was cleaning up. i said, "jill, i have to be honest with you." "that wasn't chicken; it was squirrel." three days she didn't talk to me. my first guest is a two-time academy ward nominee. his new movie "arrival" is in theaters now. please welcome jeremy renner. i got my daughter her first pet. and we didn't have it very long. it went missing on friday. and here's what i found out on the show. and here's my big secret. [scary music] my daughter's pet squirrel -- [laughter] >> harry: one, two, three. [band playing] [applause] >> harry: don't you -- don't you feel better? >> i feel so much better. being on the show is my big secret. now i have to kill you. >> harry: that's all right. i told my wife you were coming on the show. the first thing she said was, "he is so good."

i think everybody thinks that about you. >> thanks. >> harry: consistently great. is it true that your folks owned a bowling alley? >> yeah, they did. i kind of grew up in a -- if you grew up in a bowling alley -- actually, a bowling center -- i'm such a nerd when i come to that stuff. i'm not proud of it. i was born into it. it was a bowling center. you know, it's where people mostly go to like get drunk and throw heavy objects at pins, you know. >> harry: yeah. >> for me it was a different thing. it's sort of like a thing i was good at. doesn't mean it was cool or anything. i was cool in the bowling center, but i don't think i impressed anybody on the streets. >> harry: among people in the bowling world, would they scoff if you called it a bowling alley? >> i don't know, man. i didn't get -- i was 3 years old up until like i started, you know, chasing girls, you know. >> harry: do you have game?

>> i did, i did. i had a 225 average. >> harry: oh, come on. a 225? >> yeah, yeah. >> harry: geez. >> it was silly. it kept me a virgin for a while. >> harry: i hear you, i hear you. now, did you have to train to be an actor? >> i'm going to get my daughter bowling. >> harry: that's great. >> i'm going to get her really good at bowling. >> harry: the "harry" sw sponsored by the jeremy renner bowling center. did you go to school to be an actor? >> school, no, no. i initially went to school for, um, just to stay off the streets, i guess. but i started studying computer science and criminology. i fell into acting in college and just took this random elective. >> harry: like a theater course? >> yeah, a theater class. i kind of took to it very fast,

and it became something i really dug, and the teacher took me under her wing, and we ran for the hills with it. and i got my first job actually in that -- in that college, in that community college, because i was studying criminology, so i was tied into both worlds as the actor and the thing. hey, man, we need actors, pay them 50 bucks a day to act out these scenarios for cadets in tr >> harry: oh, wow. >> i said, yeah, i gotta do it. they could put me in a closet. it's a disorderly whatever code it is. just do the opposite, whatever the cop says. i'll do that. hey, sir, can you step back. i stopped forward and knocked him out and went for it. they invited me back. they invited me back. i made 150 bucks off those suckers, man. [applause] >> harry: did you know -- >> that's when i knew i made it. that's when i knew i made it.

>> harry: jeremy, is it true you were a makeup artist at some point? >> i was. i was for -- yeah, it was a random gig i had that came out of doing theater and just by necessity, i didn't work in a bar, wait tables. at least i can put makeup on hot girls. great. it kind of worked out for me. i had to make up for lost time being a bowling nerd. >> harry: did you have to do -- was it theater makeup or did you have to do prosthetics? >> it started more like theater makeup because at community college, you had to do your own makeup. it moved into doing beauty makeup at lancome counter, whatever it might have been. growing up with a lot of sisters and my mom. i had an idea of where real beauty came from as a straight man to women doing their thing, i wanted to give them an opportunity to figure out where real beauty comes from.

[band playing][c >> hry: i'm back with jeremy renner. so i saw "arrival." i thought it was a terrific movie. very difficult to describe this movie without giving anything away. >> yeah, yeah, it's a tough one. but the setup for it is essentially -- the trailer tells the story better than i could tell it. but it's essentially now contemporary, 12 alien vessels hover above different parts of our planet. a linguist is hired played by amy adams, who is amazing in this. i play a mathematician, physicist. we are hired to communicate with these aliens to ask why they're here. are they here to hurt us, help us and figure that out.

up comes a big expansive, thrilling, global movie told through a small insular story of a beautiful, beautiful, strong, bad ass lead played by amy adams. >> harry: she's terrific. so is forest whitaker. it's a great cast. >> yeah. >> harry: you have to call it an alien movie. that's the backdrop. but it's about your relationships in front of it. >> there's a more insular story, a more human story, than it is -- it is sci-fi, i guess, because we are talking to aliens, but it is about much more human issues and humanity and it sort of draws thematic lines of how we're all connected and how we're divided and what amazing things can happen if we really were united in our beliefs and what we wanted. but, you know, obviously, you see what happens when we're divided. >> harry: yeah, for sure. so this is a big, big movie. how long were you filming it for? >> it was about three, three and

a half months, i suppose. >> harry: for people who may not know, i'm sure you can imagine for an actor, there's a lot of downtime. >> yeah. >> harry: what did you do during your downtime? >> this is a small kind of movie. there wasn't a lot of chaos happening. it was very quiet. we're sitting in hazmat suits quite often. because we had to stay in the hazmat suits, it was like i couldn't do much. they're awkward to lay in. you've got the giant fan. i'd lay down for a nap. hazmat is supposed to protect you from the outside environment. but i think the inside environment inside the hazmat is more toxic. that's vodka? what do i smell fogging up in here? >> harry: i think we have a clip of "arrival." check it out. >> you know, i was just thinking about you. you approach language like a mathematician. you know that, right? >> i will take that as a compliment. >> well, it is. and i want you to surround these

communication tracks i didn't even know existed, but i guess that's why i'm single. >> trust me. you can understand communication and still end up single. >> harry: boy, eat. [applause] she was on the show. i had a chance to visit with her. she's a terrific lady and an absolutely fantastic actress. must have been fun working with her. >> yeah, yeah, she's great. she's been a friend for a very long time. i'm crazy about amy adams and her family. our lives have been so similar for a very long time. >> harry: right. now, you play music, right? >> yeah, yeah, yeah. i was a musician kind of before i was a -- an actor. that was because there's no electricity. you don't have to plug a piano in or a guitar in. that's how i learned. >> harry: you were working as a musician? >> no, i never wanted to go down that road to be forced to write a song. i just wanted to play music --

>> harry: just for yourself. what kind of stuff did you play? >> all over the place. but all very sort of rock, soul-based blues. definitely influence is where i came from in the songwriting i do is all based in that for sure. >> harry: i found that actors, great actors, are some of the best lyric interpreters because they understand that the message they're trying to get across is paramount, whereas some singers forget that. i like hearing actors sing whether it's in a movie or in any context. i think it's always an interesting perspective. [applause] >> yeah, yeah. >> i hear you here. it's skilled. skilled, technical thing that's just perfect pitch, on point, but you lose emotion.

your music i love because it's emotional, not that i'm saying your off-key. >> harry: good, because i'm not. >> the emotion, that's why i like the rock/blues influence. it can be sloppy. be behind the beat, in front of the beat. as long as it's filled with emotion, that's the music i respond to. >> harry: sure. >> i don't think it has to do with being an actor. >> harry: do you think you'll ever go on the road? >> i'll do small little venues. i'll just like in small crowd like this and just keep it real simple and real tight. grade tall? >> i'm 6'1". yes, with the shoes i'm 7'2". i've been this tall since i was 12. >> harry: wow. >> i had to get a special desk in school. >> harry: it was a little bit of a problem. >> i love it now. the otherroblem was when i was a kid, they didn'tave cool clothes. so my mom dressed me in button-downs. i looked like a man going on an interview. i was tall. i got into school. my first day in 9th grade. everybody's like, shhh, the teacher's here. oh, me? i'm 13. >> harry: you had a career as a journalist before comedy. >> i was a journalist for 10 years before i got into comedy. >> harry: wow. >> yeah. >> harry: that's an unusual transition. how did you get into comedy? >> because i'd done print journalism and i wanted to get into broadcast. so i thought i'd get into comedy and get a personality and be bubbly. i also loved it because i realized people don't read.

so it was a natural -- >> harry: people don't read or can't read? >> both. but it got to the point where my family wasn't reading my articles anymore. i was doing investigative journalism. they were like, honey, your name looked really pretty on the paper. >> harry: were your folks supportive of you making the change into comedy? >> it was a shock. you have a good career. why would you want to leave? now my parents accept it because i'm on "harry." hey. [applause] but my dad, you know, being a protective dad, he said, you know, chloe, you can still do the test to become a police officer. and i was like have you met me? if i become a cop, i'm going to give all my ex-boyfriends tickets. >> harry: absolutely. now, are you single right now? >> i am single. >> harry: are you dating anyone? >> i'm dating, but it's hard. i try to do online dating. i'm dating myself. i did it 10 years ago when it was scary. it was dial-up.
