it was another day of protests. this time in berkeley where several people were led away in handcuffs as the demonstrations became heated. good evening. thousands of people converged on berkeley today. there were right-wing supporters but there were far more counter protesters there. >> several people were detained by the police. amber lee was there and joins us live with the latest, amber? >> reporter: the park is quiet right now. the barricades are down. if you look behind me you can see the red banner hanging and it reads bay area stands against hate.

at the peak about 2,000 people packed into this area. >> reporter: supporters of trump were out numbered by counter protesters at martin luther king jr. >> reporter: both sides talking over each other with neither side listening. you. >> are ignoring everything that i said. >> exactly. you are calling me a racist. >> reporter: incident after incident the police moved trump supporters away from the counter protesters when the exchanged became heated to keep them from turning violent. one person removed appear to be joey gib son who came to the park. others were escorted out by the police. >> the police are forced to drag us over here and want us to walk back to our car where people just threatened us and we are going to go get you because they think we are white supremacists. >> reporter: describing

himself as being part of the america first movement. he tells me he came from orange couldn't tow support from the no to marxism rally. he and his companion were forced out by counter protesters. >> people in masks surrounded us and wanted to drag us away. [everyone talking at once] they turned violent. >> all right. the fact that we have to leave this way it is a shame. [everyone talking at once] >> reporter: other trump supporters came to the park even though the protest was canceled looking for a space to express their opinion. >> if people threaten rallies no matter what side they are on, then they are bullying them not to have rallies anymore. especially when the rallies are about free speech. >> get back. >> reporter: we saw people with their hands zip tied and taken away by the police. no one wearing a mask or carrying any object that can be used as a weapon was allowed into the park. >> reporter: some counter

protesters set off smoke bombs as a diversion for the police. soon after a large group dressed in black with their paces covered, left-ists rushed into the park by scaling the barricades. we saw them releasing water from the barricades so they can move them out of the way. >> i don't support, you know, silencing people for having their opinions and like right now there are people -- throwing stuff at cops. i do not support that. these are people that defend our city. >> reporter: when the group dressed in black marched out of the park the police used tear gas. the police remained here awhile after everyone disbursed. so far they arrested 14 people but did not say what the charges may be. i should mention the majority of the people here were peaceful, ken, heather? >> all right.

thank you. a counter protest happened at another area. >> reporter: the rally over at crescent field was pretty much a family-friendly event. we saw parents with their kids in strollers and they had their signs and there was a lot of chanting and singing. but then they did start marching. that is when things started getting interested and we saw encounters with people from the march with those from the no- marxist group. >> reporter: it started out like a college pep rally. >> reporter: several thousands of people, including children rooting for the same cause, love and inclusion. >> reporter: when the rally ended at the field thousands began marching through the streets of berkeley with the police. along the way to martin luther king jr park we found two men

arguing. >> why isn't i yell at you. >> free speech, is it a free anger? free terrorist? it is a free speech. >> reporter: it attracted people but. >> shake my hand, please. we need to come together. >> reporter: large groups of self-i'ving people left other demonstrators afraid to continue into the park. >> i am freaked out. there are a lot more antipeople here than i expected. i am not comfortable going in there. me neither. >> no. i am not here for violence. >> reporter: the crowd did chase a man down the street throwing water and glitter on him. the crowd cornered him at the gas station. he sat on the ground for several minutes before getting up. >> i was just trying to have free speech. i am still trying to talk to somebody. >> reporter: he was escorted by the police to a waiting car. after that incident. -- [singing] >> reporter: several in the

demonstration started to leave. [singing] >> reporter: now, we did witness that one dialogue men with different ideas. that left peacefully. they shook hands and went their separate ways. afterwards we saw a lot of people leaving the park. we stopped a few of them and asked them why they are leaving. some of them said it was time to go and some said it was really the heat that kept them away from staying in the park for too long. back to you. >> all right, thank you. for more on the weekend protests around the bay area log on to our web site ktvu.com. time now to turn to texas where the flooding from harvey left at least five people dead. thousands of national guard troops are heading into the houston area. president trump is expected to visit the flood zone on tuesday. we are standing by now in texas with the latest there, lauren? >> reporter: we moved just up

the road to dixon texas where there has been catastrophe flooding as you can see. tropical storm harvey will linger over the state in southeast texas leaving cities and towns under water. >> it just came up. like a tsunami almost. >> reporter: houston and the surrounding area hit as harvey pounds texas. streets disappearing under water, residents turning to kayaks and boats to get around. rescuers overwhelmed as they try to get to residents fleeing to attics and roof tops while floodwaters continue to rise. some families leaving behind homes to get to drier land. >> the river usually does not flood as bad as it did today. in a 12 hour it went up six feet. the current was hard. it was moving one of our big

one-ton trucks. >> reporter: it was a daunting category 4 hurricane. dropping more than 2 feet of rain during its first 24 hours onshore. harvey continued turning over the region and is expected to drop as much as 50 inches in some areas. president trump directing federal agencies to do everything in their power to aid relief and rescue efforts and officials in texas doing all they can to reach trapped residents. >> always try to seek the high ground. if you are on ground or in a building. get as high as you can. and try to avoid going outside if you don't need to. >> reporter: texas is not out of the woods just yet. harvey is expected to dump more rain in this area just outside of houston over the next several days. we are expecting that rain to begin any moment. >> yes. can not get a break for those folks, all right.

thank you. meantime, residents at a nursing home where lauren is, had to be rescued in waist high water. a relative of a resident said many people in the nursing home are in wheelchairs and use oxygen. coming up in a few minutes we will show you the bay area fire department traveling to texas to help with the search and rescue efforts there. here at home, vegetation fire kept firefighters busy for much of the day. the fire was reported at 1:00 in the afternoon near north webster street. smoke from the 18 acre fire filled the city. alarming a lot of the residents and prompting a quick response. no injured reports. now, smoke from the fire covered part of the highway including 101. we now have a look at the hot,

dry conditions out there. >> reporter: near record- breaking heat for many. even one area reporting a new record. 99. the old record in some areas, 100 degrees. our inland folks really saw the heat right in there. santa rose a102. inner east bay, 107 in concord, livermore and antioch. a lot of 80s and 90s around the bay. closer to the coast we had early clearing. the fog came back and 65 degrees the afternoon for areas right around pacifica. half-moon bay, holding on to 66 at this time. 74 in the city of san francisco. going inland it is still baking, 100 degrees there. 101 at concord. 103 in the south bay. 91 in san jose. as we get into your bay area monday the advisories will continue. the heat warnings for our higher elevations including the north bay hills, east bay hills, into the mountains, it includes the inner east bay

valley locations. a reminder to drink plenty of fluids, the shade of orange, continues into monday is for the heat advisory. including the north bay communities all of the way down into areas stretching over across the napa valley and then as i shift here, you will see outside of san francisco and the coast all of the bayside communities included in the heat advisory as well. going south, all of the way down. tomorrow, it could be just as hot as today. we will have a look at what to expect in the extended forecast and how long it is expected to last, coming up. the mayor has submitted his resignation because of comments on facebook. the resignation took place this morning. he posted a few weeks ago liberals are quote unamerican and the black lives movement encourages cop killing and transgender people are mentally ill. residents confronted him at the last city council meeting.

another victim of the barcelona terror attack has died. a woman who passed away this morning. bringing the number of people killed to 14. 120 others injured when a van plowed through a crowd in barcelona. 24 people remain hospitalized. five of them are in critical condition. jarad tucker from lafayette was the only american who died in the attack. the bay area sending more resources to texas. part of the nationwide effort to respond to the mounting disaster there. >> urban search and rescue task force iii got its orders to head to texas flood zone. >> reporter: all morning long,

members of urban task force iii were waiting for orders. >> we are going to send out a module package. that is a 14-person team to man our rescue boats and motors. >> reporter: the crew will haul tons of rescue gear to texas including chainsaws, fuel, variety of boats able to navigate the shallow waters that hit the houston area. >> there will be places where people are just basically stranded and they need to get out and they need to get to shelter. they may have a medical emergency and those kind of cases we can go in and get them and get out. >> reporter: they had a lot of experience responding to nationwide disasters including hurricane katrina. gathering hard earned experience on how to handle rescues under the most difficult of circumstances. >> when we went to katrina we did not have the inflatable boats or john boats.

it was for earthquakes when buildings came down. we needed water rescue packages. >> reporter: now, members ever the task force say they will be deployed for a minimum of three weeks. back to you. >> residents of charlotteville, virginia had a chance to voice their concerns over violence that hit their city a few weeks ago. dozens of people were injured and a woman killed when a car drove into a crowd of counter protesters there at the white supremacist valley. two troopers monitoring the events were killed when their helicopter crashed. today, hundreds of people attended a meeting where they expressed frustration. >> 60-year-old white woman it was a shocker for me to see how utterly the police failed to protect the residents of our community. healing trickles down from dc but we need answers. >> lots of education needs to happen so that we can figure out how we don't let things that happen this summer happen again to our community. >> representatives from the department of justice were at today's meeting. in the wake of charlottesville, tiller son today appeared to separate his values and that of the state department from president trump when it comes to racial issues. today on fox news sunday he says he believes america's commitment to fighting racial unjustice was unquestioned but would not say the same for president trump. >> i don't believe anyone doubts the american people's values or the commitment of the

government or the agencies and defending the values. >> the president speaks for himself, chris. >> tillerson is the second official to distance himself from the president on the issue of race. last week trump's top economic advisory said he almost resigned after the president's response to charlottesville. before pardoning him trump reportedly asked attorney general jeff sessions to drop the federal case against former arizona sheriff. and that is something that one former barack obama advisory says is an impeachable offense. sessions told trump that dropping the federal charge of a political lie would be inappropriate and assured him he can pardon him later. fiffer claims if the report is true it could be used to impeach the president as traof
