all reported first cases today. in the last half hour, china raised the death toll from 41 to 56 people. the number of confirmed cases have also risen to just under 2000. and now, the city of wuhan where the outbreak started, is joined by 12 more chinese cities, isolating about 50 million people. today the french automaker psa group evacuated families from wuhan, the u.s. has had two confirmed cases, a woman from chicago and a man in washington state, both traveled recently to china. the cdc says it is monitoring 63 possible cases in 22 states. here in the bay area, alameda county officials say they are monitoring no more than 10 possible cases. christina coleman has the latest on the outbreak. >> reporter: the rapidly spreading virus is a grave situation according to china's president. the outbreak, which began last month in central china, has killed dozens and sickened hundreds in at least 10 countries including the u.s. officials are scrambling to slow the transmission. >> translator: it is not just chinese people who were worried, everyone is worried. they are all afraid of dying.

>> reporter: the city where the brick started at a seafood market are on lockdown, affecting more than 50 million people. most personal vehicles are banned from downtown, increase travel surrounding the lunar new year, prompting officials to order travel agents to stop group tours. trains have been blocked, and major tourist destinations have been shut down. airports around the globe continue to screen passengers for signs of the virus. >> translator: to deal with infectious disease we must take such measures. >> reporter: in the u.s. a second case has been confirmed in chicago. a woman in her 60s who recently returned from china is under medical care at a hospital. the cdc and prevention is monitoring several states. >> the health risk to the general public remains low at this time. >> reporter: the majorities of those affected are in mainland china, malaysia reported its

first case on saturday. the cdc says they expect more americans who travel to wuhan will be diagnosed with the virus but over all chances remain low. stay with ktvu for continuing coverage of the outbreak, we will bring you new developments on air and online as we get them. now to the impeachment trial of donald trump the president's defense team today presented their opening statements. the attorney spoke for several hours before adjourning for the weekend. they defended mr. trump's ukraine dealings and argued that the democrats motive is to overturn the results of the 2016 election. we report from washington. >> reporter: day five of the senate impeachment trial brought it quick and vigorous defense of the president by his legal team as they responded to the accusations from house managers. >> when you hear the facts, and that is what we intend to cover today, the facts, you will find that the president did absolutely nothing wrong. >> we know there was no quid

and spirit. he passed away at his home in maryland, he was 88 years old. memorabilia once belonging to former california governor pat brown is being auctioned off by an anonymous seller. the items which include private letters are valued at $20,000- $30,000. the former governor says he was not consulted or informed of the auction that starts on monday. he believes the items should be part of his father's archives at the university of california, berkeley. in san francisco, traffic was snarled downtown as streets close for two different demonstrations today. antiwar activist gathered for a no war on iran march on union square, and antiabortion activists gathered for the walk for life march. allison rodriguez was at the march, she joins us live with

more. >> reporter: we did encounter a couple of protesters on the corner of the street but they did not stay for long and things stayed peaceful. thousands of people marched down san francisco's market street saturday for the walk for life west coast. dolores is one of the founders and says even in the beginning the antiabortion event drew a large crowd. >> that first year we had 7000. we were very happy. from that year, we doubled. and it just continued to grow. and, the counterdemonstrators were smaller and smaller. >> reporter: the walk, in its 16th year, opposes the roe v. wade outcome in which the us supreme court legalized abortion, nationwide, in the 70s. speaker kathleen rowland chose not to terminate her pregnancy when she conceived after she was

toll from a powerful earthquake in turkey has risen to 29. more than 20 people are injured and many more are still missing. the usgs says the magnitude 6.7 earthquake was in eastern turkey. searchers are looking for survivors. the region has had more than 400 aftershocks. many of them with a magnitude of 5.0 or greater. officials have opened mosques, schools, and other places for

scores of people who have left their homes. secretary of state mike pompeo responded today after an npr host said he went on a profanity-laced tirade after an interview. pompeo grew irritated, and he shouted at her in a meeting afterwards. in a statement today, he did not dispute her account of the conversation but said she lied about the interview topics and lied about the post interview meeting being off the record. kelly and npr dispute these claims, saying she never agreed to an off the record conversation. it documentary about residents recovering from the deadly campfire premiered last night at the sundance film festival. the filmmaker, ron howard, talked about making the documentary. the film follows residents of paradise over the course of a year as they were to put their lives back together following

fairfield. yesterday the low was 70s. we are starting to see changes over the past couple of hours as i mentioned, some light rain up in sonoma county during the 3:00 hour. as we come in closer right now, starting to see some coverage on the radar from santa rosa to healdsburg to cloverdale out towards the coast. and also up into portions of mendocino county. current numbers, most areas right now still in the upper 50s to lower 60s. so, we are on the warm end of this weather pattern. you will definitely notice a cooldown and temperatures as we head into your seven-day forecast. outside right now, our live camera looking out towards san jose, some clouds with partly to most the cloudy skies for tonight. overnight low starting out tomorrow morning in the upper 40s to the 50s. here is the plan, a chance of a shower at 7:00, the main activity will be overnight.
