you can count on us. a bay area woman is killed when a brick slammed through her car window. why police believe it may not be an accident. how oakland is trying to encourage more physical distancing for pedestrians and cyclists, by closing down some streets. this is ktvu fox2 news at 6:00. good evening, i am cristina rendon. andre senior is off tonight. we begin with the search for a suspect after a 63-year-old grandmother from antioch was killed when a brick came crashing through the windshield of the car that she was riding in. it happened last night on northbound 242 and concorde, where it connects with highway

4 and we are told why the highway patrol believes this was an intentional act. >> reporter: the chp is searching for a suspect, who they say launched a brick 80 feet off an over crossing carrying a grandmother in front of her grandkids, this happened around 9:30 in concorde where highway 242 connects with highway 4. officer brandon with the chp says the woman was in the passenger seat of a volkswagen jetta. her 20-year-old grandson was driving. two younger grandkids witnessed the horrific incident from the backseat. >> presumably they are just going home, and then there is crazy loud ruckus, the driver looks over and realized something happened to the windshield. and, his grandmother is struggling to breathe. becomes unconscious. >> reporter: the driver pulled over and tried to perform life- saving measures, but his grandmother died at the scene. during the investigation, officers found other bricks and

other things on the freeway overpass really believe the object came from. >> it's brick and mortar like you would for a house building, it's pretty heavy. odds are pretty low that would be kicked up by a vehicle driving. >> reporter: police want to hear from anyone who was in the area late friday night. if you saw someone walking on the freeway, heard something, or saw anything suspicious. alyssa harrington, ktvu fox2 news. now, to the coronavirus pandemic and a grim milestone, the united states has now surged past italy with the highest death toll in the world, more than 20,000. and became the first nation to record 2000 deaths in one day. the u.s. also has the highest number of cases with more than half 1 million of the world's nearly 1.8 million cases. governor gavin newsom says here in california the rate of people being hospitalized has gone down. and, for the third straight day, on friday, people being admitted to bay area hospitals

has also gone down. the state is close to 22,000 confirmed coronavirus cases and more than 600 deaths. in the bay area two additional deaths were reported in contra costa county, wringing the death toll to 11. alameda county also had another death. the san mateo county sheriff's office said two staff employees have tested positive for covid-19. the two cases appeared to be unrelated. the two employees have not been to work since late march and both are quarantined at their homes. so far, no inmates, correctional officers, or deputies have tested positive. the governor of new york says hospitalizations do to covid-19 are down, but the death toll keeps rising. >> give the good news, the curve of the increase is continuing to flatten. the number of hospitalizations appears to have hit an apex and the apex appears to be a

plateau. which is what many of the models predicted, that it was not going to be straight up and straight down, it would be straight up, hit the top number and then you plateau for a period of time. that looks like what we are doing. >> meantime, a battle is brewing between cuomo and bill de blasio, who said the city schools will remain closed for the rest of the academic year. cuomo says a decision like that should be made in conjunction with leaders of the other school districts in the metropolitan area. more than 39 million masks will be permitted produced in the u.s. and made the coronavirus pandemic. the defense department confirms to be produced over the next 90 days. they will be made under the defense production act. the president invoked the act, which gives the federal government broad authority to direct revit companies to meet the demand of the needs of the country. millions of americans are waiting on a $1200 stimulus check from the federal government. that is expected to arrive next week either by mail, or direct deposit. we have more from washington.

>> the 16 million americans who have lost their drive since this crisis began. >> reporter: as we are told, they will receive their payment and the bank account or mailbox by wednesday. at the same time, the white house is warning that funding for the payroll protection program is expected to run out by the end of next week. more than half of the $350 billion in forgivable loans to small businesses have already been approved. this past week, democrats blocked a deal to add another $250 billion for the program, although, demanding the hospitals and state and local governments should get another $250 billion as well. >> we are for providing relief but we want to get the money out that has been promised and make sure that the next trench of dollars goes to the areas that are hardest hit, particularly in minority communities. >> reporter: this morning the top republicans in the house

and senate slammed the democrat's effort calling it a reckless threat to block a job saving funding unless we renegotiate unrelated programs which are not in similar peril. while adding, this will not be congress's last word on covid- 19, but this crucial program needs funding now. american workers cannot be used as political hostages. this latest divide from the white house agreed friday to bipartisan negotiation over a phase for relief package, there is already a lot of disagreement over what that should include. today, the heads of the national governors association weighs in on that, and said the federal government needs to provide at least $500 billion to the state to make up for lost revenues during this crisis. in washington, i am gary kenny, fox news. the city of oakland has planned to dedicate 74 miles of road to local traffic during the shelter and place order. it went into effect today. we have the details.

road closure signs are up on day one of oakland's low the streets plan. >> will take advantage of the streets being close so we can get out more. >> reporter: as of today, 74 miles of road in oakland are closed to make it safer to walk and bike to the city while keeping a safe distance in the shelter in place order. >> were trying to do a social distancing if we have more space to stay away from each other and make sense. >> reporter: city leaders say they are seeing more pedestrians and bicyclists on streets they normally would not be on his outdoor recreation areas are closed, crowded roads means less room for social distancing in a greater risk. >> i do own a bicycle, but i don't ride it as often, because of the car situation. >> reporter: emergency vehicles, and people who live on the streets, will be able to drive in the blocked off area. the hope is that we less traffic and cars will drive slower. but not everyone is on board.

>> >> reporter: officials say the monitor cdc guidelines and adjust the program as needed. libby schaaf says the hope is that people will voluntarily comply. for now, citations will not be given out to people who go against the plan. ktvu fox2 news. the golden gate bridge parking lots are close this week and prevent over clouding. they are closed until 7:00 a.m. on monday and the la vista point will be closed saturday and sunday from 10:30 a.m. until 6:30 in the evening. covid-19 outbreaks at the bay area nursing homes reflect a larger issue and nursing homes across the country. the wall street journal reports the coronavirus has killed more than 2300 people and nursing homes and other senior facilities in the u.s. that would mean the pandemic's death toll is much higher at these facilities in the official federal government count. and, early indications of

promising for an experimental drug to treat the coronavirus, the bay area company gilead makes the drug remdesivir. the new england journal of medicine reports the test size was small with just 53 patients. it was not a double-blind trial that would've offered more definitive evidence. but, patients who received the drug for 18 days, of those patients more than two thirds showed enough improvement that they did not need a ventilator. a dj is giving the east bay some reason to celebrate a little bit just during the stay at home shelter in place order. >> [ music ] >> dj rhino is trying to bring levity to those trapped indoors. he's offering free 40 minute

apartment complex. police say during a time when stay-at-home orders are in place, partygoers were ignoring those orders. four suspects were seen driving away from the scene in a car, more than 90 shell casings were found and all shooting victims are expected to survive. a fire today at a townhouse complex where nearly a dozen people were left without a home and left a dog dead. this was a two alarm fire that broke out about 6:30 at a townhouse in marietta boulevard. it spread to another unit in the complex, everyone was able to get out safely but 12 people are now displaced, and the red cross is helping to find places to stay. nobody was hurt and the cause of the fire is under investigation. millions in italy will be celebrating one of the holiest days of the catholic calendar inside of their homes. as the nationwide lockdown is extended until may 3rd. kate fox's amy kellogg has more

weeks. researchers at ucla predict the jobless rate may peak and more than 60% in the next few months. they also say california on employment figure will likely remain in the double digits until the end of next year. the federal reserve reports that americans have run $1.2 trillion in auto loans. since the coronavirus has devastated the economy and left tens of millions of people out of work, a growing number of consumers can no longer make their payments. in the past, lenders would just repossess the car but analyst say now and the struggling economy, banks and financing divisions do not want to be stuck with his repossessed cars. the companies are offering deferred payments for up to four months. >> what are they going to do with it in the short to medium term? who will buy it, and for how much? everybody has to reassess the market again, the entire market. >> car owners who cannot make
