. >> developing news in the east bay where police fatally shoot a suspect inside a walmart store. governor newsom outlines his plan to help homeless people with coronavirus in thousands of motel rooms up and down the state. >> this is fox news at 6:00. >> good evening, we begin with developing news. a scary moment for customers at the walmart stores. police are on the scene of an officer involved shooting that touched deadly. police were called just before 3:30 this afternoon drawing a huge police present. police say an officer confronted a man who witnesses say was waving a bat and

threatening people. that's when the officer open fired killing the suspect. we'll have more on this developing story tonight on the 10:00 news. >> and now to the latest on the coronavirus. california has now secured more than 11,000 hotel rooms to help the homeless safely isolate during the pandemic. and much more will soon be available. >> we had a goal a few weeks back of identifying 15,000 hotel rooms that would be made valleyable as a subset of our larger strategy, homeless strategy to get people off the street. i'm pleased today to announce a milestone that 10,974 hotel rooms have been procured. >> speaking at a present conference today in campbell, governor newsom said project room key has secured thousand of hotel rooms many of them through an agreement with motel

six. they are always making rooms available 19 counties in the state. so far project room key has provided more than 45 00 homeless people with a place to stay. there are more than 726 thousand ,000 cases across the u.s. with almost 38,000 deaths. almost 30 30,000 of those cases are here in california where there have been just over 1 1,000 deaths in our state. there are thousands of cases in the bay area but health officials are reporting a decrease in the number of hospitalizations over the last few days. and as the stay at home orders have led to economic hardships across the nation a new debate has sparked whether or not we should ease restrictions. we have more from new york city. >> more and more americans are being impacted by the economic fall out from the coronavirus pandemic each day, resulting in

long lines at food banks, protests to reopen businesses, and leaving law makers wrestling to figure out the right time to start their economy. some governors says they will start easing restrictions in the coming days. >> the situation happening in new york is far different than what is happening in texas and other places and as the president made clear there are different rattle geese for different states. my goal is to make sure that i do my part to help these people get back to work in a very safe way. >> over the last week protestors across the country pushed for law makers to relax, stay at home restrictions to help alleviate growing hardship. >> we are here for our freedom. we need to open up california. >> it was a similar scene in a handful of states on saturday. including maryland where demonstrators held a drive by protest urging law makers to lift those mandatory lock downs

the u.s./canada border has been closed to nonessential travel for a month. the board which spans more than 5500 miles could stay closed for a significant amount of time. >> six bay area counties are now taking extra precautions in the fight against the covid-19 pandemic to require people in their counties to wear face masks. >> this is something that we have already been seeing. every time i have been to the grocery store in the last few weeks i have seen a lot of people wearing masks, but now it's mandatory to do so. >> from mask to bandannas to turtle necks. >> i'm all for it. >> it is one of six bay area counties now requiring people to cover their faces when going to essential businesses, doing essential work or taking public transportation. the counties all have the same

>> the health officials recommend people cover their faces when they go out but it's not mandatory just yet. ktuv fox news. >> the california department of public health has released new figures detailing just how many skilled nursing facilities are dealing with covid-19 out breaks. at least one case exists out of the 1 1,224 facilities in california. many of them are dealing with dozens of cases including the gateway facility in hey wood. in total there are more than 1700 covid cases and almost 1300 employees have tested positive. mcdonald's workers in oakland today walked off the job demanding better protection against covid-19. this is the second time they have walked off the job demanding that they have better protection from the fast food chain. workers have filed a complaints

with the health department alleging sick employees who have been exposed to covid-19 were forced to come to work because mcdonald's did not provide paid sick leave. they said they do not properly clean and disinfect their restaurants and they are not provided personal protective equipment. >> a cannabis dispensary has designed a new way to serve customers. they have essentially said they have built a store front that allows people to come and pick up their products without ever having to touch a person or employee there at the dispensary. we have the details. >> if you don't know what a bud tender is. >> same thing like a bartender, and bud tenders like ann marie have been deemed essential workers during the covid-19 pandemic. cannabis dispensaries continue to prepare orders for their customers.

and shooting a woman before leaving her on the side of the road. police now say the 29-year-old woman was found critically wounded. from there police say the suspect led them on a wild chase that ended in richmond. police say he pointed a gun at them and police open fired. police say the woman is currently listed in critical condition and is on life support. two oakland police officers were injured in that incident. a 6 .6 .6 magnitude earthquake struck in the pacific ocean off japan. this happened saturday evening local time. a magnitude of 5 five struck an hour later. no tsunami warning was issued. it hit 280 miles below sea
