bracing for the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic as new jobless numbers are due to be released in a matter of days. you might call it a silver lining in the stay-at-home orders, a major caltrans project is finished in half the time, all thanks to a virtually empty freeway. this is ktvu fox 2 news at 6:00. thank you for joining us this evening, i'm andre senior. >> and i'm cristina rendon. we begin tonight with the latest on the coronavirus pandemic. new numbers released today showcases in california have risen to more than 50,000. the death toll is now at about 2100. the united states leads the

world and confirmed cases of more than 1.1 million and 66,000 deaths. >> the pandemic has created astronomical unappointed numbers nationwide. so far, more than 30 million americans have filed for unappointed benefits since mid- march. and april's unappointed report is set to be released next week. lots of garrett tenney is in washington with a look at what that report might actually look like. >> reporter: and administration officials are expecting next week's jobs report to be one of the worst we've seen since the great depression. last week alone, 3.8 million americans file jobless claims, pushing the six week total to more than 30 million according to data from the labor department. this morning, white house economist kevin hassett painted a bleak picture of the short- term economic outlook, predicting next week's job employment between 16 and 19%. >> you will see economic data over the next few months that

is as bad as you've ever seen. we turned the economy completely off which is something that hasn't ever happened before. you are going to see a very big increase in the unemployment rate, very big decline as larry kudlow mentioned in second quarter gdp but most forecasters expect the second half can rebound from that and the sooner we get going, the more likely it is that will be true. >> reporter: this next week, at least 20 states will start the process of easing restriction the economies. officials across the board will be keeping a close eye on the economic impact those moves have, as well as the impact on public health. with concerns that some things are opening to quickly and could cause a number of coronavirus cases to surge. despite the bashing our economy has taken during the pandemic, our labor secretary believes he can make a quick turnaround. >> our economy has a chance as we reopen to get back to where it was. we were so strong, a couple of months ago. we had to take this pause, but

i think it would begin getting back, people are going to be please to be back at work and get the economy going. mike this next week we will get it even clearer picture of the impact the coronavirus has had on our economy with dozens of major corporations released their earnings report for the first quarter. in washington, i'm gary tenney, fox news. the director of the national institute of allergy and infectious diseases, dr. anthony fauci is set to testify before the gop led senate committee on health, education, and labor. this comes after the white house walked dr. fauci from testifying before a democratic- led house committee. that said the testimony is set for may 12. dr. fauci and other health officials appear before the house oversight committee in march when there were about 1000 cases in the u.s. to northern california counties that will partially lift the shelter in place order starting next week. you bought and sumter county said they are allowing several businesses to reopen on monday, as long as they follow social distancing protocols. back here in the bay area, more than 150 new cases of coronavirus were reported over the last 24 hours.

totaling more than 7000 cases here in the bay area. we are following developing news out of southern california where protesters have gathered at laguna beach. demonstrators have gone through the net barricades meant to keep people away. you will remember governor newsom closed peaches in orange county, after hoards of people showed up last weekend, largely ignoring the social distancing guidelines, put in place to help slow the spread of covid-19. people are holding flags and shouting to open up the beaches. police are standing by, making sure the demonstration remains peaceful. and incentive discount, they are drawing a clear line in the sand about what people can do when it comes to visiting their popular beaches. starting today, all beaches are closed indefinitely between the hours of 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. visitors are only allowed to cross the sand to swim or serve. sunbathing or lingering on the beach is prohibited and beach

chairs and coolers are banned. a few surfers were out in pacifica this morning but the scene was a far cry from last weekend when police issued hundreds of stay-at-home order violations. officials in san mateo county say only people who live within a 10 mile radius are permitted to visit the beaches there. officers have been checking addresses and turning away visitors. officials at the beaches could still be closed to people don't follow all of the state guidelines. a major road demolition construction project in san francisco finished in half the time, all thanks to reduced traffic from the shelter in place order. ktvu's leigh martinez spoke with caltrans about the completion of the project and the others now underway. >> reporter: construction on the elementary circle and san francisco is done. all north and southbound lanes of highway 101 open before dawn saturday. the project caltrans originally planned for 18 days in july finished in just nine days. >> we were able to compile three months out within 2 1/2 weeks

actually nine days, and we are once again really excited to be opening one day early. >> reporter: the elementary circle usually has 240,000 drivers go over it each day. how trans attributes the quick demolition and replacement of the deck to the covid-19 pandemic shelter in place orders. they kept many bay area commuters at home. >> closing north on 101 for the entire project, were able to really push the completion. >> reporter: while the work tweets calling for road projects to be done now during the coronavirus shutdowns, caltrans is one state agency that he did that call. 100 contractors and 200 caltrans workers worked around the clock to finish the alameda circle. now, caltrans has three more projects underway. at park presidio, the northern section of state highway 1 is being repaid. this requires sunday night, single lane closures in the tunnel to the golden gate

bridge. then, 11 miles of highway 101 are being repaved and widened between geyserville and cloverdale. and construction of state highway 29 roundabouts in napa will also see work seven days a week. all of these projects were originally slated to begin this summer, but fast tracked to take a vintage of reduced traffic during shelter in place orders. in san francisco, leigh martinez, ktvu fox 2 news. >> construction project near bartz station means we can service between lafayette and rockridge stations will be suspended through july. the project is excited to begin next saturday and sunday with work continuing on weekends through july 4th and fifth. a free west branch will be set up from lafayette to rockridge on the scheduled work weekend. crews will the replacing track opponents and rail lines that date back to 1973. the project will also require temporary lane closures along highway 24, late at night and

early in the morning. oakland has added five more streets to its street closures as part of the oakland sloped streets program. you will call last month, it became the first of the two dozen ministries to pedestrians, cyclists, and joggers. that's to allow for social distancing amid the coronavirus pandemic. other cities are now following suit. san francisco, san mateo, foster city, and redwood city are some of those that have enacted similar closures. after a two-week delay, the vacaville farmers market open today for the season, but as ktvu's sara zendehnam reports, there are strict rules in place to follow health guidelines. >> reporter: farmers markets are considered essential. this opening doesn't go against the shelter in place order in solano county. but this year's market looks very different. farmers markets are normally a

place to enjoy the weekend, pick up some food and spend time with family and friends. as with everything these days, the vacaville farmers market is anything but normal. >> the last merchants here, they're significantly less. usually there's way more people. >> reporter: these are just some of the changes to the farmers market to follow health guidelines as it open for the season this morning. >> i have gloves, i have a mess. >> reporter: gloves and masks are required for sellers. booths are 10 feet apart. customers can't touch products and in booths, one person will handle produce, and another will handle money. >> i like how they are keeping things separate, and people are being very mindful. >> reporter: but it's a frustrating adjustment for farmer ben lyon. >> they've been doing what they've been recommended to do. and so, in order for me to make a living, i must comply. i don't like it, but i have to. >> reporter: the farmers market was originally supposed to open

april 18th. after a two-week delay and fine- tuning modifications, customers can stop by creek block plaza every week to get what they need, even if it's different than before. >> am very excited, but the farmers market is open for us. even despite these restrictions, it's worth it. >> reporter: the vacaville farmers market is open every saturday from 8:00 a.m. until noon until october 10th. sara zendehnam, ktvu fox 2 news. the city council voted unanimously to remove a member of its planning commission after a controversial facebook post. ken turnage ii posted that message last week on his personal facebook page. he said, quote, the coronavirus should be allowed to run its course and reduce the number of weak, elderly, and homeless people in the country,". during last night's remote meeting, they read 92 emails from the public ranging from calling the post despicable to an ignorant witchhunt. turnage ready statement at

the beginning of the meeting where he blasted officials and said his personal opinions had nothing to do with the city or his job., quote, to try to send will create a nexus to further your political agenda is shameful. san jose police are looking into the circumstances involving an officer involved shooting. it happened in the area of north king road and duffy way east of highway 101 last night. authorities say officers chased a man who was carrying a. when he raised that weapon, one of the officers fired off at least one round. altogether, neither the suspect, although neither the suspect nor the officers were hurt here, the police homicide unit is conducting an investigation. the department's internal affairs unit, the city attorney's office, and police auditors office are all monitoring the case. coming up, canada makes a major change in its gun laws, following a mass killing the left the two people dead. and a real estate agent one

less than two weeks after its deadliest mass shooting in history, canada is banning assault rifles. the ban goes into effect immediately and includes within 1500 types of assault style weapons. justin trudeau says there will be a two-year amnesty period to allow people who already on these weapons to comply with the band. the shooting repaid the beginning of april 18th left 22 canadians dead in nova scotia. north korean dictator kim jong-un suddenly reemerged this week, weeks after vanishing from public eye. since the country state media released a video of them, people have been studying the images, trying to figure out where he's been all this time. fox's aisha hosni has more on what the images could tell us about his health. >> reporter: after weeks of speculation about the health and whereabouts of kim jong-un, north korea releasing what they claim is new video of the

leader attending the opening of a fertilizer plant outside pyongyang. kim was last seen april 11th, fueling rumors about his health. >> my guess is there something wrong with him. whether he's dead or incapacitated or a,. >> reporter: the part of the.'s seemingly squashing the weeklong speculation. these unverified images released by state media shows kim at the ribbon cutting ceremony with senior officials and his sister, kim yo-jong, who experts believe would be kim successor if he was to become incapacitated. and a large crowd attending the event, most of them wearing masks who arrested into applause once the ribbon was cut. kim, who was reportedly recovering from major cardiac surgery in april did not appear to be in any discomfort, walking without the use of a cane. but, he was also seen writing in a motorized cart.

on friday, president trump was asked about the leaders reported resurfacing, declining to comment. >> i'd rather not comment on it yet. kim jong-un. we will have something to say about it at the appropriate time. >> reporter: south korean government officials who were downplaying any rumors about kim's house are confirming his visit to the fertilizer factory. in new york, aisha hosni, fox news. it was an emotional scene outside of a hospital in madrid as spain marked a milestone in its battle against the coronavirus. the medical staff cheered as the three final patients left a makeshift hospital that became the center of spain's pandemic. the hospital closure came on the same day spanish health officials announced they had finally flattened the curve on the deadly virus there.

today, spain lifted the strict shelter at home order that was imposed seven weeks ago. during his daily update, new york governor andrew cuomo says while hospitalizations and icu admissions are down, the death toll is still too high. >> the number that i watch every day, which is the worst, is the number of deaths. that number has remained obnoxiously and terrifyingly high. it's still not dropping at the rate we would like to see it drop, it even went up a little bit. 299, 289 the day before. that is bad news. 276 deaths in hospitals, 23 and nursing homes. >> cuomo says they are seeing about 900 new patients walking into hospitals and testing positive and new figures released today shows the bronx

has the highest number of cases in the region. 27.6 of that borough has tested positive. the tragic death toll that the coronavirus has taken on new york city has some people considering leaving the big apple for good. fox's bryan llenas has the story. >> so, i'm getting a lot of phone calls. hey rachel, i decided i want to get out of the city now. >> reporter: rachel desalvo is a real estate agent in new jersey who is busier than ever, helping residents move out of new york city, trying to escape the coronavirus. from a doctor, to a family with five children. >> there looking for a house that would be able to help them with that, and a square footage to homeschool. >> people once attracted to the exciting and bustling streets of the big apple, now fleeing, scared of the risk of being infected with covid-19. >> i had a mask, my daughter was a premium.

>> reporter: stephanie clarkson left her i department to temporally stay at a house in tennessee. >> i did get a bit never stuck god for bid, that we got sick in hospitals did end up getting overwhelmed we would not be able to get care or treatment. >> reporter: now, the cofounder of her own social media company says she is not going back to the city. >> a big realization from this as we can absolutely run our business from home or really from anywhere. >> reporter: even before the pandemic, america's three largest cities, new york, los angeles, and chicago were experiencing population declines over the last couple of years. experts now think the coronavirus could accelerate next it is, leaving cities strapped for cash. according to its independent budget office, new york city will lose and nearly $10 billion in tax revenue, going into 2021. if people continue to flee urban democratic stronghold, the national political landscape could change as well. >> if those are the people who

dropping in from the north, definitely a cloud producer and even a rain producer up along the north coast right around eureka, kate mendocino, and look what happened is becoming closer. you will see clouds bisecting the bay area for the northern half of the clouds, southern half, places like san jose not so much. but as we come in closer, you can see green appear. for the 6:00 hour, reporting light rain. we have some shower activity, even if it's not official rain, you can still have some mist or drizzle, even right around the coast or central portion of the bay. solid cloud cover right now, having a big impact on temperatures. you can see some 60s but it looks like more sunshine. mostly sunny skies, and a temperature of 66 degrees. overnight lows, starting out your sunday morning in the 40s to the lower 50s. partly cloudy, and the temperature is somewhat on the cool side, with the cool spots starting out the day. here we are tonight, you can

see lots of clouds overhead. you can see moving into san francisco, even approaching the south bay. that is what happens in the short-term. and then, in your sunday, you can see clearing skies. we are expecting more sunshine tomorrow, not a big change in temperatures. you have to wait a few days for the temperatures to be going up and you will see those numbers going up in the five-day forecast. first thing tomorrow morning, partly cloudy skies and then more sunshine into the afternoon hours. temperatures on track to reach the 60s, all the way to the 70s. tomorrow, one of the cooler days of the weekend, and you will notice into monday, we warmed things back up. and the real warming, that was a tuesday, wednesday, thursday. it will be warm to hot, the warmest locations by thursday could be approaching the 90 degree mark. that heat is on the way, you will notice we talked about the chance of a shower in the short term for tonight. after that guys, looks like we are going to dry things up. what's interesting, a year ago in may, we had some mongolian storms move into the middle portion of the month.
