155 fighters telling a massive blaze this morning from the san francisco waterfront. and they managed to save a piece of history in the process. sonoma county is the latest to move further into phase 2 of reopening. how the restaurant rules differ from other counties. this is ktvu fox 2 news at 6:00 pm. good evening. thank you for joining us. i am christina rendon. >> i am andre senior. the massive fire broke out just before 5:00 this morning at pier 45. the fire grew quickly from one alarm to four alarms and the flames came within feet of the historic worship uss jeremiah

o'brien. >> and the blaze also destroyed a warehouse. there are no questions about the structural integrity of the pier it self. >> reporter: this fire was massive. san francisco fire chief janine nicholson says the fire likely started inside the warehouse. because the warehouse was so big, it took a while for anyone nearby to notice the smoke and flames. bright hot flames shut up into the dark san francisco sky early saturday morning. the four alarm fire on pier 45 was attacked by land and water. 155 firefighters, 50 trucks and engines, and a couple boats did not allow the flames to spread out of warehouse c. >> throughout the progress of this fire, we did see almost every portion of this building collapse in one area or another. >> reporter: the san francisco fire department says one firefighter was injured.

but no windows was hurt. pier 45 in the heart of fisherman's wharf is home to the historic ss jeremiah o'brien and the uss penn penny know. both are safe. the one major loss is the warehouse, a building with marine style businesses inside. the fire did also damage pier 45 and a fire truck. >> we had to spray water on her truck as we fought the fire. >> reporter: flames are out but there is work to do. investigators are looking into how the fires started and the status of the structural integrity of pier 45. in the meantime, the fire department is asking people to stay away. if they do not, to at least maintain difference distance and wear a mask. >> to ensure the safety of the firefighters, police officers, public servants and the community at large. >> reporter: ktvu fox 2 news. >> that four alarm fire threatened a navy submarine commandeering structures and the uss jeremiah o'brien that we told you about earlier. it was one of the destroyers in

the litter d-day invasion in france. as alyssa harrington tells us, here is more on the story. >> reporter: it is amazing the ship only suffered some minor paint damage. is used on the video, 100 foot flames burned next to it and officials credit a single fire boat for saving it. >> it is my professional opinion without the fire boat we would hast the jeremiah o'brien. >> it is an emotional roller coasrector of the national liberty ship memorial displayed a dramatic chip of the uss jeremiah o'brien as his background during our zoom interview. it showed the ship that up by towering flames during the fire on saturday morning on the san francisco pier 45. >> it looks like the ship is on fire. it is the first thing we saw this morning. it was like an incredible fearful event for us.

we wanted to preserve this national asset. >> reporter: the ship was saved. the fire burned a warehouse directly behind you. the san francisco fire boat came to the rescue. >> verbal 3 was detailed and tasked with saving the jeremiah o'brien, which they successfully did. this was a task that involved greater than 100 feet of length of flame going over the jeremiah o'brien. there is structural collapse with the walls coming in. all of those efforts related to the jeremiah o'brien being saved . >> reporter: firefighters also use tan lines and letter trucks to protect other structures including the tourist attraction shown full of antique penny arcades and the infamous laughing sound. >> there is a lot of history at pier 45. potentially, if that fire had gotten out of control, you would've seen over 100 years of history go up. a big part of the history of

america. >> reporter: the uss jeremiah o'brien, at fisherman's wharf is a national historic landmark. it was billed and launched during world war ii, making voyages across the world, carrying personnel and supplies to the beaches of normandy. >> the ship specifically made three transatlantic voyages and 11 shuttles to normandy. it was there during the day. >> reporter: he said the crew back then nicknamed it the lucky o'brien. again, is survived another close call. one thing that our prayers producer talked about, is that it was saved on memorial day weekend, when we honor all of those who have served in our armed forces. as for what is next for the ship, as sarah mentioned, they are investigating the integrity of pier 45. if it is in bad shape, they will move the ship where it will be moved and when yet to be determined. live, i am alyssa harrington,

ice from the this afternoon, and warm spots near 90 degrees out toward fairfield and antioch. san jose is 83. oakland in the upper 70s. pacifica in the middle 60s. we warm things up today. this is a live camera look out toward mount diablo. that area is drying up. we will be watching fire danger with the seat getting in over the next few days. as i mentioned, monday and tuesday wednesday and thursday in the neighborhoods are on either side of 100 degrees. here is our thinking with the timing here. we will warm things up a bit on sunday. the real heat lives in on monday for memorial day. on tuesday, taking a quick sneak peek at the forecasted highs on monday, santa rosa 99. concord 100. san francisco close to 80 degrees. and san jose approaching the middle 90s. major warming for that extended period of time, even the bayside locations in the middle 80s to lower 90s and the beaches in the 70s. the excessive heat watch begins 11:00 monday and runs all the way into 7:00 pm on thursday

for most of the bay area, with the exception being near the coastline close to the san mateo county. the temperatures in most areas are falling to about 82 through the 90s and the real hot spots are topping 100 degrees. coming up, we talk more about the way building into the bay area and we will look at the 5- day forecast coming up in a few minutes. >> oakland mayor libby schaaf was tested for coronavirus this afternoon at allen temple baptist church on 85th and international. mayor libby schaaf says she is not experiencing any major symptoms of coronavirus, but she does have a sore throat and wanted to err on the side of caution. >> this is open for everyone. the more people get past it, the more we will be able to control this virus. and the faster we will be able to get back to work, give back

to our lives, in a way that is safe and healthy. >> the drive-through testing site is free and open until 7:00 pm every night. anyone wanting a test should make an appointment first. california recorded almost 2000 more coronavirus cases since yesterday. there is a total now of 90,631. there were 78 additional deaths . counties in the bay area saw a modest increase in cases. the death rates remain the same except for in alameda county, reporting two additional deaths. solano county had one and additional death. >> sooner sonoma county today is the first bay area county moving into stage ii of the reopening plan. the rules allow for outdoor dining only with strict social distancing rules and mask requirements. restaurant owners are eager to serve customers again after more than two months of relying solely on take-out nts are doubling their patio space

to make room for their outdoor customers. they will use disposable utensils only and will make sure there is plenty of hand sanitizer available. diners at his table are supposed to be from the same household. two the city of sausalito reopen some of its downtown parking lots this holiday weekend. two of the four parking lots in the area will open with a possibility of the two others opening if needed. the goal is to reduce the number of people driving on downtown streets looking for a place to park over the holiday weekend. last month, sausalito closed downtown parking lots to discourage lard crowds from gathering during the pandemic. a reminder this evening, they ktvu news app as reopening information for all of the bay area counties. there is a running list of what is open and where right on the top of the page. memorial day weekend is the

unofficial start of summer. a lot of people are eager to get outside, tired of being cooped up inside their homes. a lot of people are not going far from there. or fox news correspondent has more on how people are celebrating the holiday in this new normal. >> reporter: many beaches around the country are reopening with people flocking to the coast. >> working from home definitely cooped up all the time. just to be outside one day, we thought it was great. >> reporter: it looks like a typical memorial day weekend in southern california friday with crowds surfing, cycling and baking sand castles. officials are taking steps to make sure beach doors do not bring the virus with them. >> there are no villas, coolers , no large social gatherings. you can come down with your family and lie on a towel and sunbathe and watch your kids running of the water. >> reporter: and in hard-hit new york city, beaches are open, but swimming is not permitted. nearby coastal officials determining the rules for each beach on the jersey shore. with all open beaches implementing social distancing k-9s, and limiting the number

reopening process. >> pastors are saying, enough is enough. there can be 500 people in the store and that store and the store, when did one hour on sunday morning become the most dangerous hour in america? >> reporter: pastor gibson says the churches will practice social distancing. they say all sanitary precautions will keep them safe. in new york, lauren green, fox news. showing appreciation for farmworkers during the pandemic, this morning a caravan from the bay area brought food and supplies to farmworkers in the central coast. organizers say 80-90 vehicles traveled from this area to this area loading up all items in meeting at the san jose history part for heading out. they caravan also served as an appreciation parade for farmworkers. >> i have great respect for all essential workers. but, the farmworkers are feeding america every single evening when you eat.

it is because farmworkers are working day and night to put food on your tables. >> the organizers say the state's 1 million farmworkers cannot hunker down at home, but instead, are spending long hours for little pay in fields and do not have enough funds to provide families with food. marin county is extending protections for renters during the covid-19 pandemic next week. the board of supervisors is said to consider a measure that would add another month to the current moratorium on evictions , extending it through june 30. renters would have 90 days to repay back rent. the county is also pledging $1 million to help the most vulnerable residents stay in their homes. the california department of alcoholic beverage control is making it easier for people to purchase alcoholic drinks to go this holiday weekend. bars, wineries, distilleries, and breweries that do not have

kitchens can now partner with the providers, such as diners to sell alcohol to go. the strings must be sealed in a container and sold with a meal. in the past two months, the state has authorized 45,000 restaurants to sell alcoholic beverages along with takeout food. take a look at that. fire crews responding to a home where there is an 8 foot snake in the backyard. definitely an interesting call yesterday. firefighters say the red tailed bola is likely a pet. the red tailed boa is now a safekeeping until the owner is located. looking at the warming trend in the weather, a bump in the numbers. but manageable outside. no extreme heat. we will turn things up tomorrow, especially into

monday for memorial day and beyond. so, of course we look at the forecast for the remainder of the weekend. sunday, mostly sunny skies. it will be warmer. it cool start to tomorrow morning. then they recover in the afternoon hours. on monday, the heat watch begins. that is the first day we have triple digits across ports a the bay area. the excessive heat watch, 11:00 monday until 7:00 pm on thursday. this is an extended period of time for most of the bay area. there is one exception, portions of the coastline, toward half moon bay and pacifica. even san francisco is under the excessive heat watch as well. >> [ indiscernible - static ] this big area of high pressure is the main source of the heat. it is amplified. it gives you an idea of the strength of it. it is a strong area of high pressure building out overhead and blanketing a portion of the bay area.

the fog would usually cool us off. it is a stranger on satellite this afternoon and evening. there mostly clear skies to the cosine. we have a good breeze outside. a good sea breeze near the coast and the bay shore line. the current numbers, still talking about ads out toward fairfield and brentwood. san jose 73. oakland 60. center rosa in the lower 80s. there is the live camera looking out toward mount diablo this afternoon. there is to lots of sunshine above. the inlet spots, the entire bay area, will heat up with extreme heat inland for four days, monday through thursday, although stays near 100 degrees. 98-102 degrees. overnight low temperatures, we expect to see clear skies at temperatures in the 40s through the 50s in cool spots starting sunday morning. here is the sunday afternoon forecast: mostly sunny skies and warming will continue tomorrow. the beaches are still in the upper 60s. a few more low 90s for portions of the bay area tomorrow afternoon. our forecast models show clear skies into the afternoon hours. look at this red contour.

it is filling in over the bay area. as a result, were 90s. i will have to have at least 100 degrees on the scale as we head toward monday and beyond. the forecast ties for tomorrow, they begin to turn up the heat on the sunday forecast. santa rosa, 91. antioch 93. hayward 82. san francisco in the middle 70s. san jose, upper 80s. even santa cruz in the upper 70s tomorrow afternoon. the heat watch begins money. take a close look at the 5-day forecast. look at these triple digit readings for monday, tuesday, wednesday, and thursday. the bayside locations will be in the upper 80s to low 90s. even the beaches, the typical cool spots, we see temperatures in the middle and upper 70s. just be extra careful, drinking lots of water, and looking for shade. the intense heat is building into the bay area just in time for monday, memorial day.
