. now we will get on two more news. firefighters from alameda county and cal fire rush to put out a grass fire in little more. it broke out on cross road during the noon hour. thanks to a quick response by the fire crews, they were able to hold it to two acres. they plan to remain on the scene to make sure all the hotspots were out. this afternoon the president of stanford university informed undergrads they will not be coming to campus for the fall quarter. freshman, sophomores and new transfer students will start the school year learning from home. no dorms or classrooms. the university said it has helped health conditions would allow students to live on campus and attend in person classes. but recent spikes in coronavirus cases across california and here in the bay area have made it too difficult to do that. there is still some hope to have students back on campus for the winter quarter.

we go to gilroy where school has started. but some students are without a teacher. the situation made worse by a shortage of substitutes. >> reporter: this five-year-old was poised for her first day of kindergarten on wednesday. excitement turned to disappointment after her mother found out there was no teacher. >> the school district has not assigned a teacher to her class. so there is approximately 20 students with no teacher. no platform to work on. and are sitting and waiting to start their first day. >> reporter: the first day of distance-learning did not start on the second day of the school year either. they are still waiting for a teacher. two other kindergarten teachers offered to temporarily take in the 20 affected students. >> kindergartners need routines . you don't have the first two weeks, you have to teach that.

now you are encroaching upon academic time. needless to say, it really sets the students back. >> reporter: the principal sent a text apologizing and explaining two potential candidates are being interviewed this week. but there is no teacher and the next up is to assign a long- term substitute to the class. >> it is detrimental to the children. they have no sense of stability or security. >> it is frustrating that the children are left on a large to wait. >> reporter: to wait for a substitute could take longer than normal because of a shortage, both locally and nationally. many substitutes lost the days they worked during the covid-19 outbreak back in the spring. now they are leery to leave the backup employment they did find to go back to the classroom. >> i know teachers, in the substitute teaching field who have had to leverage their side skills, start entry-level somewhere and go for that minimum-wage job. because that was still better than having no calls.

the united arab emirates and israel have agreed to establish full diplomatic ties. in a joint statement the white house said israel has agreed to suspend plans to annex parts of the west bank and will pursue full normalization of relations.

president trump calls this an historic peace agreement. >> this deal is a significant step toward building a more peaceful, secure and prosperous middle east. now that the ice has been broken i expect more arab and muslim countries will follow. >> the eua is the third arab nation to have active diplomatic ties with israel along with egypt and jordan. the united states is joining other international investigators looking into that massive explosion at beirut support earlier this month. the blast on august 4 killed more than 170 people and injured thousands of others. it is not know what caused the fire that ignited nearly 3000 tons of ammonium nitrate that had been stored for years at beirut support. documents have emerged that show the country's top leadership and security officials are well aware of that stockpile.

kaiser permanente is looking for volunteers to participate in a study. >> reporter: it is a late stage trial for a promising covid-19 vaccine. when kaiser permanente put out a call for those to receive it, she answered. >> i am a big believer in vaccines and the science behind vaccines. i am a team player and i want to do my part to get going and get back to normal life as soon as possible. >> reporter: right now kaiser santa clara is one of four locations for the phase 3 clinical trial. the investigational vaccine was developed at pfizer and has done well in earlier testing. >> this is been an incredibly rapid process. usually vaccine development takes 8-10 years. this is much faster than has ever been. >> reporter: the director of

the kaiser permanente vaccine study center said manufacturers are having to make large commitments to their vaccines. at the same time they are testing them. >> in order to generate and get vaccines for the country in the world and get them quickly, that is what will need to happen now. it is unusual but hopefully they all work. >> reporter: to participate in the trial you have to be part of the kaiser system, healthy and between 18 and 85. they are also looking for people who may be high risk or essential workers. >> i would like to see the study get traction. i would like to see them get results and hopefully they are good and they benefit a lot of people. i want to do my part to get the study off the ground and get some results. >> reporter: they will start by enrolling 1400 people in four sites in california and oregon. eventually the goal is to enroll 30,000 participants at

120 sites worldwide. pedestrians in the south bay will no longer have to worry about pushing the button to cross certain streets. touch free pedestrian signals are now being installed at busy intersections all across santa clara county. it is a safer approach during the coronavirus pandemic. people simply have to waive their hand in front of the device instead of touching the crosswalk button. >> you wave your hand in front of the sign, 1-3 inches away. and the signal will tell you to wait until it is safe to cross. then you will get an indication it is safe to cross. and you will see these popping up all over the county. >> 25 of the devices are being installed at expressway intersections with heavy pedestrian traffic. bay area weather, the heat, dangerous heat a big concern.

this will be watching temperature sore. take a look at the hot stretch inland. triple digits tomorrow and into the weekend and next week. this will be an extended period of hot weather. here is a livermore timeline. 8:00 already in the 70s. by 3:00, 106. a beautiful shot right now looking toward the bay. some patches of hays and scattered high clouds. we will have high clouds to start the day tomorrow. current numbers, it is warm and hot toward concord at 91. san francisco on the pleasant side. here is satellite and radar. you can see green. showers and thunderstorms approaching monterey bay. tonight overnight we have the possibility of a shower or thunderstorm favoring the south bay. we will watch out for that. you see the overall pattern of the moisture flow. it is moving in from the south.

this is looking toward the bay and we see scattered high clouds moving in. overnight laws will be mile tomorrow morning. 50s and 60s and partly cloudy. this area of high pressure is building in and it is the source of the heat. not only this weekend but into next week. it is dangerous heat. the entire bay area is heating up with 80s and 90s. lots of triple digits as you work your way inland. throughout the day tomorrow we will have scattered high clouds and it will feel muggy. not complete sunshine. into the afternoon we will have complete sunshine and a lot of heat. mid-70s all the way until 108 degrees toward vacaville. this is dangerous heat. keep an eye on the morning hours. the rest of the day temperatures soar rapidly. san jose at 97. san francisco 84. the coast warming up close to 80 degrees. here is a look at your five day.
