>> fox news sunday is on the road to the mid terms with 100 days until election day. hard to believe. a look at one of the most expensive senate races in the country, and another primary battle between former president trump and his vice president mike pence's candidates for arizona's open governor's seat, a race that could give a glimpse into the future of the gop, at least there. alisha cuna is live in phoenix. >> reporter: hi, bret. yes, $78 million raised so far in the battle for democrat mark kelly's u.s. senate seat. kelly, considered one of the most vulnerable incumbents in the nation, raised the lion's share of that money. >> you know, it's pretty obvious, pretty early that we're all in this together. >> reporter: the former

astronaut and senator wants voters to know he gets it. business man jim layman is one of the top contenders running in the gop, leading masters and endorsed by former president trump. >> hopefully, there are no whacky thing, no irregularities with this election. i'm hoping for a clean election and result on tuesday night. >> reporter: both men insist they would not have certified the 2020 election. biden won arizona with little more than 10,000 votes. state attorney general mark bernavic certified those results and said she still gets blow back even as he fights the president on illegal immigration. >> i shouldn't have to be suing joe biden to force him to build a border wall but that's what i had to do. >> reporter: the other battle in the desert, the governor's race. >> i'm running against a real rhino. >> before you vote, ask yourself, what if it's all been
10:49 am
an act? >> reporter: the contest between former news anchor carry lake and karen taylor robeson has become a proxy war between trump and his former vice president mike pence. long time arizona gop strategist stan barns says voters will decide more than just the nominee. >> they're actually choosing the soul of the party. what is the party going to be? that's what they're choosing a mere few days from now. >> reporter: and even in this border state, voters we talked to say the issue they're most concerned about, inflation. bret? >> alisha cuna reporting from phoenix, thank you. great background. we're back with the panel now. catherine, this is the most expensive senate race in the country so far. how important is this for republicans as far as gaining back control of the senate? >> this is a key race. they only have a couple of opportunities, obviously. they see arizona as a state where they could gain a seat.
10:50 am
the primary is testing now, as she just said, where their own party is going. it's testing this question of whether the focus should be on the 2020 result or on the future of the party which is a fight we're seeing play out with former president trump and mike pence. we're gonna see which of those arguments is the most successful in the primary and how that works against kelly. >> it's interesting to watch these different states. georgia and the primaries there, was kind of an anti-trump vote, it seemed. his endorsed candidates didn't win. arizona, seems like there's a lot of backing for the former president. >> i think that his picks in arizona are probably the favorites heading into that primary. but in georgia, i think a lot of georgia republicans had been burned. they lost the state in 2020. then they lost both senate seats in 2021. there was a sense of, okay, we can't keep looking backwards are we have to look forward.
10:51 am
that's why you have governor kemp in win reelection and his secretary of state winning by a huge margin in the latest poll. so it will be a tale of two approaches to all of this. we'll see if both succeed for the republicans or if one or the other does. >> gillian, the border a huge issue. immigration is a huge issue. but when you have the white house this week confirming that they are going to close some of the gaps in, if you want to call it trump's border walsh continuing building in those gaps. saying it's about safety and not about blocking people. semantics aside, how does the democratic party see that in that effort? >> well, first of all, we have to point out here, there's semantics and then there's semantics. republicans believe that by making this move the biden administration is implicitly acknowledging that having a border wall in place worked. so whether you spend $1 or $100 million, whether you do that, you're proving the same point

her here. >> one person who would really like to see these, in addition to the wall is senator kelly, who's been pushing for it. has been pretty vocal about it. he wants to make the case that he is tough on security. >> marie, we just talked about the michigan governor's race. there's another major race in pennsylvania which is saulz a key state. our fox poll shows democratic leading the republican by ten points. this is one of the races where democrats chose early on to spend money to boost mastriano's primary campaign. there was a poll that had it a little closer than we have it. it's early. but does that strategy of boosting more trump friendly candidates in a place like pennsylvania potentially back fire? >> i think we'll see, and i

wouldn't call them just a trump friendly candidates. democrats would prefer to run against extremist candidates, people like mastriano, people like dr. oz and herschel walker our jd vance in ohio because they believe that they won in 2020. joe biden won by bringing over some of those elusive swing voters who exist in states like pennsylvania. that's why in a race like this, democrats are increasingly feeling more confident. the senate numbers are looking more confident. every time they nominate someone, every time republicans nominate someone who is so extreme and democrats nominate someone who's not, they are feeling better. that's why the averages are basically for the house. democrats and republicans are essentially tied. as we head into mid terms, the extreme candidates on the right, whether they have to talk about roe versus wade. democrats are feeling like they'd rather run against these

extremists polarizing figures than not. we'll see if it bears fruit. >> it does go the other way though . he does not support a single limit on abortion. it's just ghastly. that issue does cut both ways. i think it's interesting though to marie's point. yes on paper you always would like to run against someone that
10:55 am
you can paint as a crank or extreme or what have you. i do think it's quite cynical though for the democrats to say to anyone who will listen that this is about more than party. this is about country. this is about democracy. then to put millions of dollars behind people that they would argue subvert democracy. it's hard to take them seriously on that point. >> right. put in the money and run an ad saying this is a threat to democracy. >> yeah. he's such a horrible afront to democracy, here's some money to help boost you. >> catherine, former president trump and vice president in dc kind of laying the ground work for potential 2024 runs. both gave speeches. different messages and different tones. take a listen. >> dangerously deranged roam our streets with impunity. we're living in such a different country for one primary reason there is no longer respect for the law and there certainly is
10:56 am
no order. >> 2022 may be the best chance we will ever have to build a lasting majority. to invigorate the conservative movement to fulfill conservatism's purpose and to save our nation from the left wing tyranny, socialism and decline. >> it doesn't seem like the january 6th committee is moving many republicans, but is it moving independents? do you think it's having an effect? >> i think that's the key question. when you talk to people, it's not sure moving republicans or democrats. are there moderate republicans, independents who are feeling fatigue around trump even if they don't, haven't changed their mind about january 6th. but they may be open to looking for somebody else. i think that's the question now. >> it's going to be interesting to see. that's one of the things we're looking at. up next a final word.
