leaders around the world condemn last night's attack offering prayers and support. we have extensive team coverage with alexis at the scene in butler, pennsylvania. david spohn has the latest on the investigations underway and edward lorenz with reaction from the white house. alexis in pennsylvania we begin with you. >> reporter: hello shannon. we were talking with you seconds before former president donald trump took the stage and butler pennsylvania. it was exciting shannon: and people were waiting for hours for him to get up on the stage. he spoke only a few minutes all of a sudden shannon you heard several pops that sounded like gunfire which we now know exactly that's what it was. fire from a nearby rooftop. people than taking cover including the former president and he came back up and had blood on his era. people running for cover and screening. and again this morning people laid it over and over again watching. >> take a look at what happened...

[ gunshots ] >> you can hear the gunshots there shannon. police telling us three men in the crowd were shot one was killed. he was here with his family at the rally and butler and witnesses say his family were screaming for help when he was gunned down. >> people start screaming and we all started hitting the ground and just looking around secret service members all firing back there maybe six or seven shots. then looking up in the bleachers car there was a guy administering cpr. blood all over everybody around. >> it was absolutely frightening. and don't ever want to go through that again. >> i felt really scared for him at first especially when he stood up and i saw the blood. >> this video shows the

government up on the nearby rooftop that we are talking about. the fbi has identified the shooter as thomas matthew crooks of bethel park, pennsylvania." forty-five minute drive or so from where we are now. the shooter was on the roof for a very short time before he fired that weapon. 20-year-old, shannon, are registered republican according to state voting records. the he was able to get up on the rooftop at 200 yards away from the stage where the former president was speaking. then a u.s. secret service characters neighbor took my. investigators haven't said what his motive was yet. >> really at this point we are not went to make that assessment. there's an active investigation. a lot of thanks need to occur investigative lead to make those determinations of what, if any failures, there were. >> still many questions though. you can see the building behind me that is where the government is on the roof near the stage

this morning trump posting and social media saying it was god alone that prevented the unthinkable for happening act thanking everyone in america brother prayers and calling on people to stand united at this time and praying for the man who lost his life and those who are wounded, shannon. >> shannon: thank you very much alexis. joining us now david, all kinds of calls for investigations and where do we stand this morning? >> reporter: shannon, no question an intense investigation underway peer from the moments those shots were heard in pennsylvania last night. here in washington fingers already being pointed in top law enforcement agencies, fbi and secret service asking attack questions of themselves. the suspect was identified as a 20-year-old bethel park, pennsylvania, his name is thomas matthew crooks. shot to death by a secret service sniper. the motive is still not officially known. he was taken out on this roof near the stage. fpi is leading the investigation. i've been on the phone with

multiple sources and the fbi director personally briefed president biden and his national security team about what they know so far. authorities are certain of what what things. first this was an assassination attempt. the second factor authorities believe it was a lone wolf attack. what is not certain is how the suspect with a gun will get on a roof and take a shot at the former president of the united states. already someone under heavy protection. on top of that witnesses say they sought a spec start -- suspect on the roof with a gun and told authorities. still the former president gave a speech and was allowed to go forward with the event on stage. the police pressed on reports of people warning police before the shooting. watch. >> we are following up on those and i will tell you i am aware of those and i am aware that law enforcement had responded to a number of reports of suspicious activity. the specific response to this bully part of the after action. >> reporter: where the suspect

you know the last time an assassination attempt was maid in a president was in the 1980s the ronald reagan. >> shannon: take a break much. joining us now republican national committee chairman michael whatley. good to see you chairman. defined a different conversation. i am wondering how you're feeling now that we've all seen this video multiple times? had a chance to digest. we could be having a different story are conversation. >> we could be and obviously we are relieved the present is okay. we are heartbroken for the families of those who were shot and lives that were lost. and i think that it kind of gives you a sense of the gravity of what we are talking about here. and that we as a republican party, stand firmly behind president trump and we really do grieve for the family is the rest of the victims of this incident. >> window convention takes 18 months more like a two years to get planned. everything from messaging to

security how did the events of last night and pack plans here? >> in terms of physical sense the arena is set and security is here. we feel very comfortable working with the secret service and 40 different law enforcement agencies in terms of what that security is going to look like and this is going to be a facility where we are going to able to have 50,000 delegates and alternates and guests and members of the media who were going to be here and who are going to be safe. that is very critical for us. our business is critically important for the process right? we are going to be nominating president trump for the president and we are going to be nominating a vise president. going to give their speeches to accept those nominations and then we are going to move back into the field peer who were going to roll up our sleeves and we are going to go to work. that is not going to change, clearly i thank the mood is going to. the number of prayers i received in the texts that i have

received from people all across the country praying for president trump and praying for the families of those affected in the shooting, that is tremendously important. and notice important to the president and to the family and certainly important to me. >> will it does feel like there is some divine intervention potential miracle yesterday. i will redo something from the wall street journal editorial board talks of the tone where we are. it says president trump will win over more americans if he comes and tells his followers they need to fight peacefully within the system. if the trump campaign is smart thinking about the election it will make the theme of milwaukee occult to political unity and better angels of american nature. they go on to say it will leave plenty of room for it criticizing democrats and their failed policies but the country one civil agreement and discourse not civil war. what about the theme of unity this week we. >> i think unity is very important and strength obviously is very important but right now this morning i think politics is secondary.

but now i think we need to be praying for these families that have been affected. i think we need to be grateful that president trump is alive and is going to be here. certainly we look forward to him being here in milwaukee and i think it's going to be a tremendously important for him to be here and deliver that message to america. >> do you think this is a bit of a wake-up call that it's gotten so heated their accusations and, you know, comments about the fact electing somebody would be the end of democracy as we know it? we had the former attorney general lebar saint democrats have got to stop there grossly responsible talk talking about donald trump being in existential threat to society. he is not. where'd we go? this this country is unable to -- able to disagree and in a heated way. >> there is but there's no place in politics in any way, shape, or form for these actions in this violence. it's a horrific act. we certainly don't know all the

details we have time for investigations but right now i think everybody in america means to stop, the new deposit and reflect on what is actually important for us in this political process going forward and, you know, fortunately we are here in milwaukee and the show is going to take place. i think is tremendously important for us as a country that the republican party is going to move forward and we're going to be strong and resilient, certainly president trump is going to be strong and resilient. >> shannon: we'll look forward to seeing him well and on the stage any sense of timing on that? >> i certainly believe it's going to take place soon. i think right now we expect the president is going to making the announcement an announcement but again this morning, the time for us right now is to respect them what happened yesterday and to breed steve on the implications of it and think about those families in the president. we have time for politics later. >> shannon: alright chairman good to see you and we wish you

[ ♪ ] back now in milwaukee wisconsin where they republican national convention kicks off tomorrow right here in this building. the assassination attempt of former president trump in pennsylvania is already having a huge impact on security here. fox news correspondent mike joins us about what we know about heightened measures and

there's only so much we can say but it feels like it's going to the next level. >> reporter: it certainly is fluid and developing as we speak to give you an idea of the multiple rounds of security here is some anti- climb fencing written at surgeries a barriers annually or near the pfizer forum. you see this level of security but we are already inside the security perimeter. as a look up the hill here that's the point where vehicles and people we'll be searched at the outer edges of the perimeter. this is a massive -- massive security operation but it secret service spokesman told me it was always designed eagle at planning mexico to be expanded if needed. that indeed is happening right now. there was a memo that went out to the trump staff as well sing additional armed security is going to be provided for the trump staffers as they come here to the foreign. this is a multi- police agency operation under the command of the u.s. secret service. a spokesman for the secret service anthony goog leone tweeted a picture of one of

three chartered jets arriving filled with secret service agents ready to execute the security plan but keep in mind that was before the assassination attempt. he tells me they have talked to an immediate new areas of concern. trump supporters who could be angered by the assassination attempt and trump haters who would be inspired by the assassination attempt. meantime these massive demonstrations that were planned, the coalition to march on the rnc, to bolster they could have as many as 10,000 demonstrators and they intend to continue with their demonstration. they recently got a victory in terms of permit that will allow their march to go with insight and sound of the pfizer forum here. as we speak there is nothing official as far as any of that changing and there is also a group called live action, a conservative group and they are opposed to republican easing of opposition to abortion rights, so it's a very dynamic situation down here, we've already seen

groups of secret service and other police agencies on the ground and the people haven't even started arriving en masse here to the rnc, shannon. >> shannon: alright mike tobin on the ground in the walkie here think you might character and is now retired secret service agent jeff james of the current police chief -- chief of police at morgan university. good to have you with this cheap. >> they queue for having a shannon. >> shannon: who will put up a map so people can see this seen from yesterday and give an overview with everyone asking questions. the investigation is fully underway. what is your assessment of what we know so far after hearing from multiple witnesses saying they were pointing out that shooter on the roof, we know time can be very deceptive when you're in the middle of one of these urgent situations but, you know, multiple witnesses say they played it for multiple people on the ground and yet the shooting happened. >> what is important to remember is the map that you are seeing on the screen where the shooter is from where president trump

would have been weird being told i've heard everywhere from 130 to 160 years. our snipers train out to 1000 years. if you took that same google view and blew it out to 1000 yards, that's everything though slavers are responsible for. so, you know, it gets tough. they may have been looking at what they thought was another perceived target behind him when like a fish actually happened and people were saying there's a guy up there they may have been looking at an elevated natural feature in the trailing behind those buildings. it's an incredibly heavy lift to see all of the all at once which is one of the reasons they work in pairs. but when you think about it wasn't just the hundred 30, 160-yard to sense they're looking at its almost 100 times that in 180 degrees. so it's a lot to see all at once and with people yelling and

pointing its hard to discern what they are pointing at, it certainly could lead to something just that close to them being missed. >> shannon: there was some back-and-forth then there were some reporting last night and claims there were requests from the trump campaign for further resources and more security that went unanswered. this morning to secret service but out a statement saying that is absolutely false. they say they better protect resources and capabilities to the formerresident security detail and they say both he and president biden are people who are subjected to threats every single day, multiple threads. but there we'll be questions for secret service director she is cult of the hill. what kind of questions do you think she will have to answer an option of explanation would you expect? >> while i can tell you that president trump even as a former president before he became the presumptive nominating as we will sea in milwaukee this week, his package of protection was greater than that of former presidents i saw in my 22 year career mostly because he is a

polarizing figure and he is not in the -- more in the public than what we saw what president obama and even clinton. once he has become this presumptive nominee he is getting all the assets the president gets, snipers and armored cars and so on. but those of the questions that will do to be answered by the director regarding timelines and requests granted they will also ask probably was next so, you know, the secret service is always moving forward and always modifying their protective operations based on threats. one oh starting my career big thing was drones and being used as a weapon of delivery system. women modifications to handle that threat. if modification is to be now though she made now it will happen. >> how difficult is it to secure this kind of location? not only huge crowd with its

numbers. i thought it was very important that in a statement today president trump called upon the america to unify and reminded us we are all americans. we can have these kinds of disagreement over policy and programs but we ultimately are inside a giant family called america and we can have those disagreements without the kind of violence we saw yesterday. thank god. thing how close, a fraction of an inch and a former president of the united states would be dead today. we had three people, two critically injured and one killed for reasons we don't yet know. motivations are there but this is the moment we find ourselves in as a country. you mentioned the sixties and seventies. we've had some violence recently currently attack on a republican congressional baseball team. gatti giffords almost killed 2011 sixties and seventies november 1963 president assassinated.

the stage and invited me up on the stage and said no cackle on it we weight and have the -- a bit later and just them in order to after the shots were fired so i would have been on stage. it was sort of almost surreal. the present quickly this was rifle fire the president went down on behind the podium and secret service was on top of them and then he stood up and secret service and you saw the fist emerge back defiant reassuring string and he yelled out, usa. simultaneously over my left shoulder, are sadly an innocent bystander laying on his side and the people next to him trying to stop the bleeding he was bleeding very badly.

so all one side of me the president was being taken off stage and on the other side of me this poor man with them trying to part the crowds and get medic support and. another engine we would have lost the president. so it was a very sad, scary day for america and we are praying that families of the wounded are okay. president trump fortunately able to survive. >> so 1 that one life lost we are grieving and, you know, the world thinks of the loss and two others in critical condition. i wonder how this changes the year -- it's good to hear answer paused and those things but we are in the reality of an election year. >> i didn't ab really think about it. for me, obviously i was karsh

down and everybody went as the shots were fired. but it was sort of in the middle of the pace's trend of figure what was going on and make sure everybody was safe. but later that night, you know, i have six daughters and i talk to them and they were terrified. he realized that being a public official, we shouldn't have to worry that our lives are at risk if we're running for office or a certain public office. you know, this extreme political rhetoric that certainly has to contribute this is just unacceptable in our country is so country is at risk here and what his team is doing and at the same time way to battle and ideas in the political violence
