1:39 pm
senseless jealousy turned toward the grieving families. >> i cannot imagine the pain that i've caused your families. i saw the look on all your faces and the tears in your eyes, and i hate that i'm the reason for it. on that day, i was in the worst physical and mental state of my life. i was sick, suffering from an untreated, severe mental illness. >> the judge, who watched abdullah bond's theatrics throughout the trial finally had the last say. >> he is a very talented actor. when i saw the scarface videos, it's as if when he committed these crimes, he became that persona of scarface, of just the cold blooded killing without remorse. the bottom line here is he will die in prison. he will never be a free man. he will take his last breath. there wil.

1:52 pm
had spent all of this money on behalf of the fraternity, and he was merely reimbursing himself. >> berg escaped an indictment and disappeared until he resurfaced in portland, oregon and started up an advertising business. but berg was up to his old tricks. this time, the u.s. attorney indicted him for stealing $19,000 from a portland bank and a check kiting scheme. berg pleaded guilty, but ultimately dodged another bullet. >> he ended up making some arrangements where he paid restitution and left town, this time with his eyes set on seattle. >> darren berg's mortgage company, meridian funds, was set up to collect money from investors and invest that money into mortgages. >> but instead of using the money to buy mortgages and invest, he was living lavishly off off the money that is the textbook definition of a ponzi scheme. that just was the beginning of the end for darren.
1:53 pm
>> he was arrested for embezzling, but had stashed millions of dollars in exotic offshore accounts, filed for bankruptcy, and brokered a deal to help investigators unravel his crimes. >> he always thought he could stay one step ahead of everybody ahead of his investors, ahead of the bankruptcy court, ahead of the fbi. >> so when berg's time ran out and he pleaded guilty, darren berg was charged with orchestrating washington state's largest ponzi scheme and was sentenced to 18 years for fleecing over 800 investors out of $140 million. berg spent the next six years doing time at various minimum security federal prisons in california. then he disappeared. berg hopped a prison fence that led to an airport where u.s. marshals say it's likely he boarded a private jet and started his new life as an international fugitive. >> i have little doubt that he

probably is someplace where it's warm and doesn't have an extradition treaty to the united states. >> berg is a wanted man. investigators say he may have had help and named berg's ex-boyfriend as a person of interest. >> he's intelligent and cunning. there's no stopping to what he's capable of. >> joining us now with more perspective is former fbi agent bobby chacon. bobby, here's the question. how has berg been able to evade capture for this long? he can't be doing it by himself, can he? >> no, probably not. but the biggest issue is cash. i mean, cash is a fugitive's best friend because we can track everything through money now, through the banking system and even internationally. but he was able to squirrel cash away during as many years that he was perpetrating this ponzi scheme, knowing that ultimately it's all going to crash down around him. if he was smart enough to squirrel cash away, you know, he might have a nice sizable
1:55 pm
bankroll of cash to keep him going. >> do you think it's more likely that he had his getaway all set up with money and passports? more likely. that was the scenario. instead of maybe people helping him now, i think that he probably knew eventually he'd be on the run. >> so he had maybe fake documents, travel documents. he had an amount of cash hidden in different places, and then when the actual escape was to happen, he had some help on the outside. those two things together is what's allowed him both to escape and to stay on the run. >> what do you think is the likelihood that he's going to be captured? >> it's difficult to know. a lot of times it's, you know, sometimes it's not until their money runs out, their cash runs out, and then they have to start. you know, doing stuff on the grid. if he runs out of cash or if he makes a mistake, they'll be on him. >> all right. >> thank you. bobby >> great to see you. >> if there's a true crime you think we should know about, call the true crime news tip line at
