missing child. >> it's near midnight in kissimmee, florida, and more than 15 hours since anyone has seen 13 year old madelyn soto alive. >> i went to pick her up from school today and she never came out. >> okay. what's her name? >> madelyn. >> last name? soto. >> soto. >> patrol knocks on doors and conducts k-9 searches of the nearby neighborhood, but the trail comes up cold. >> we're going to pull one more, and then we're going to have the dog sniff it out again and see if we can get another track going. >> little do they know, they are speaking to the future prime suspect. by morning, maddie's search is taken over by the orange county sheriff's department. they question madeline's mom, jen, about the last time she saw maddie. >> i didn't get home until 1030. okay. and then at 11, i sent them to bed. >> them meaning? madelyn and

jennifer's longtime ex-boyfrien, stefan stearns. >> is it normal for both of them to sleep in the same room? >> sometimes when i really need a good night's sleep, i will send them upstairs. >> police learned that stearns had lived with jen and co-slept with the teenaged maddie. it was all going on for years until stearns broke up with jennifer and moved back with his parents months earlier. i was very vigilant for the first two years of how he would interact with her and what he would do, and i would question if anything was weird. >> but nothing ever was truly weird. >> but when detectives find a lock and chain and a gun and ammo in the room, maddie and stefan shared, they begin to question everything. i'll tell you guys have a pretty good relationship. >> definitely have a very strong bond. this girl knows nothing but love here in this house. >> stefan admits to detectives that he was the last person to see maddie alive. he claims he

dropped her off a few blocks from school that morning, but when they checked his phone's location history, they noticed something strange. >> i noticed that you don't have anything before this morning. is that unusual? >> no. it's a new phone. i stupid, i went to do an update yesterday morning and i managed to factory reset my phone and lose all of my contacts. all my information. >> skeptical orange county sheriff's immediately request a warrant to search stefan's phone. when the warrant comes back, a disgusting discovery. detectives find over 1700 homemade images of maddie being abused for years. stern's face and body parts are also visible when police match stern's license plates to public surveillance cameras. more details emerge. >> madeline was visible in that

vehicle. >> they see stearns driving with maddie in the opposite direction, he told police. maddie's head is abnormally slumped. she doesn't move the entire ride. when stearns pulls over in a remote parking garage, more video catches him taking maddie from the front seat and putting her in his trunk. >> we believe she was already dead at that time. >> stearns is immediately arrested on child sexual battery and child charges. 24 hours later, in a rural part of nearby saint cloud, in a grove of bamboo trees. >> we send our units out here and we discover what appears to be a body. >> police find maddie. her cause of death, strangulation. stefan stearns is immediately charged

with first degree premeditated homicide and will soon face trial. stearns has been denied bond while awaiting trial. meanwhile, prosecutors have announced that they intend to pursue the death penalty. they also suspect others may be involved in madeleine's disappearance. stearns was allegedly sending emails to unnamed persons of interest. police say there could be additional charges coming. no charges have been filed against madeleine's mom, but the investigation continues. we'll keep you updated. we now turn to the shocking attempted murder of evelyn bundy. after being savagely attacked and left for dead. evelyn knows that she is lucky to be alive. i recently sat down with evelyn to talk about that horrific night and how she's processing the shocking truth about the monster who tried to kill her. when i met you, it was just a few months after you had been shot.

yes. it's hard to believe evelyn can carry such a spark of light and happiness. this is a woman who nearly died at the hands of a madman. she openly talks about her story being shot in the head, stabbed, beaten and left for dead. her healing journey is really a true miracle. how have you been able to move on? >> it was slow going, but i found hobbies. i found friends, i found god, i found church, so, you know, through things like that, i was able to reconcile and feel confident in my life to understand why that simple act is such a huge step. >> just listen to evelyn's incredible story. >> it was a like a site out of a horror movie. >> true crime news with the never before seen photos from the night evelyn bundy nearly lost her life. >> she's bleeding from somewhere and all i can find is a cut on

her neck. and i don't don't even know where all this blood is coming from. >> and i felt like it was the last time i was ever going to see her. >> at 18 years old, evelyn bundy made a major life decision. instead of going to college, she moved from chicago to fort worth, texas. >> i wanted to do something new, you know, like have some sort of new experience. >> and she bought a ticket and said, i'm leaving for víctor. >> rabago, who raised her as a single dad. it was hard to let go, especially when evelyn fell hard for 19 year old railroad worker dallas ironman. >> i had a crush on him before we even got together. >> she had your eye on him? >> oh, yes. definitely. i told him, hey, you know what? i really like you. and sure enough, he liked me back. >> and after dating dallas for only a few weeks, evelyn moved in with him. >> i was with the person that i loved so much. like i connected with dallas instantly, more than i've ever connected with anybody. >> but their new life together was about to be shattered by that night. the night of the

horrific attack on evelyn. >> my thought that i was never even going to see her again or know what happened to her. >> dallas says it all happened while he was at work. his mother was supposed to have driven evelyn to her own night job at walmart. >> so my mom called me at about 10:00 and told me that she went to my house to pick up evelyn and that she wasn't there. >> how did she know that evelyn wasn't home? >> they honked the horn, beat on the door, the lights were off and everything. >> and evelyn didn't answer? no. and when dallas can't reach her by phone or text after more than two hours, he rushes home to find evelyn on a couch in the living room. >> i thought she'd just fallen asleep or something, and i was like, oh, thank god she's she's here. she's okay. >> then as he tries to wake her, dallas says he sees blood and then she started moaning and moaning and groaning and everything. >> and then it all just started to click, and i said, what do

you do whenever you come home to find your loved one has been shot three times in the head and stabbed in the neck. what do you. i didn't even other than calling the police, i didn't know what to do. >> dallas says he cradled evelyn in his arms, waiting for cops and medics to arrive. >> only four things she could say was, i don't know, i can't see. i love you and it hurts. >> evelyn couldn't remember. doctors would later discover she'd suffered severe brain damage from three gunshot wounds. >> it was once in the face, once in the back of the head, once in the side of the head. the doctor said, you know, we need to prepare you. she has co-axial blindness, and she's very, very weak and almost paralyzed on the right side of her body. >> nothing could prepare victor for what he was about to see. >> she had a large black spot on her cheek where she'd been shot. her head was wrapped and bandaged. her eyes were sort of going in a couple of different directions. i fell to my knees crying. you know, as soon as i saw her. when she heard me cry,

being released from the hospital, not knowing who attacked her, that she went into hiding with her father back in chicago for a total of three weeks. her dumbfounded dad says evelyn was pining for her boyfriend, so badly that she actually risked her life to return to fort worth to be with him. yeah, i love salukis. they're like the susan, evelyn and dallas actually got engaged. how do you feel about evelyn marrying dallas. >> >> i'm devastated. 100% against it. but if i told her no, you're not marrying dallas, she would do it more anyway. >> he is a very nice, wonderful person. i think he's very wholesome. and he works hard for me and supports me. and i really love him. i think, and dallas tears up when he talks about his love for evelyn. >> what made you ask evelyn to marry you? well, after everything happened, i kind of

seem like he came home and just found me like that. >> evelyn, you could have died. yes. >> i laid there for about five hours with three bullets in your head and knife wounds in your neck. >> yes. it is a miracle you are alive. >> definitely. >> why did he try to kill you? >> that i still don't know. >> dallas was arrested after he cried me a river, professing his innocence. what was he charged with? >> aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, not attempted murder? >> no. did he go to trial? >> what happened? >> we were going to go to trial. but he took a plea deal. >> and that plea deal meant that he wouldn't spend one day behind bars for trying to kill you. >> correct. >> ten years probation, not a day of prison time. no, he's in jail when he got arrested. but that was it. >> so, evelyn, how is that justice for you? >> it's not. i still feel a lot of anger to this day. i don't feel that that was right at all. he's still fri doing whatever he

>> and here are some of the other stories we're following in our true crime index. skokie, illinois michael gargiulo, the convicted serial killer known as the hollywood ripper, is due in court to face new charges. he killed two women. one of them was ashton kutcher's girlfriend. police in the chicago suburb of glenview say he also stabbed 18 year old tricia capaccio to death 30 years ago. prosecutors say new forensic evidence links gargiulo to the killing. and now, a stunning turn of events in a tallahassee courtroom as the trial of donna adelson stops before it even starts. moments into the proceedings, the murder trial was derailed. adelson's attorney withdrawing from the case because he previously represented the suspect's son, charlie adelson, and now it seems like charlie is going to be called as a witness for the prosecution in his own mom's trial. charlie has already been convicted in a murder for hire
