arrest of a suburban mom with a secret that she was dying to keep her name. amanda riley, better known to millions of true crime fans as amanda, the community raised $100,000. >> i started donating $500 a month. >> the sympathy money was rolling in by the thousands, all with heartfelt intent from friends and churchgoers to help a young woman with a horrible cancer diagnosis. >> i heard the words you have stage three blood cancer. >> amanda riley, a bubbly california wife and mom and self-proclaimed devout christian, eagerly joined the cancer warrior community. >> i'm a terminal patient, so i'm in a clinical trial just trying to buy more time. >> her case even caught the attention of celebrities, from leann rimes to glee's matthew morrison. but amanda's real diagnosis was about to change. >> the information that amanda

gave didn't make sense. these things are not adding up. i don't think she's sick. everyone knows. >> turns out she didn't have cancer at all. it was just one big money grabbing scam. after bilking her community of close to a quarter of $1 million, riley was arrested and is doing time in a federal prison. her story is now in the headlines with the release of the abc studios and hulu documentary series amanda. >> she was a liar. >> why would somebody fake cancer? >> 10-3 true crime news managing editor nancy moscatello first discovered amanda riley's scam. nancy is a producer on the docu series and a longtime colleague of mine. you've been working on this case for years, and early on, you assigned me a part of this case to work on. i remember saying to you, it's how are you

going to prove a negative? how are you going to prove that someone doesn't have cancer in this world of hipaa laws? >> it was her blog. she was so detailed. she gave so much information once i got ahold of that, it was full of information. i could fact check that was her downfall because when you can prove they're lying, then all other things fall into place. >> amanda, based on the number one podcast by the same name, takes a deep dive into this elaborate con with so many victims. >> so as far as victims are concerned, the list that the government submitted was 347 victims. >> amanda documented everything, posting pictures on her website and updating her supposed cancer treatments. it was all a fake. >> i don't think she was like a super genius in the world of crime, but what she was hiding behind, i don't think she realized how much it did protect her to get away with it for as long as she did. with hipaa laws, you can't just call up and

say, oh, you know, i see she was at your facility today. is she a patient? blidh szwarz. >> nancy's investigation prompted cops to start digging. the two of us were there in the bay area when local police and federal agents raided amanda's house. it looks like amanda's husband is coming out. >> if you're defrauding someone, it becomes a financial crime. whether it's an individual or a business or even the government. >> with her lies unraveling, amanda was busted. she pleaded guilty to wire fraud and was sentenced to five years. >> this was the first time a cancer scammer of this, like through wire fraud, was ever prosecuted through the federal government. >> now, as amanda sits behind bars, viewers will get a behind the scenes look at the woman now infamously named amanda. what are we going to see on the docu series that either will be different or reinforce the

oh my god. they will soon identify a face with a name on the other end. >> the only eyewitness to what happens is candy hall. >> candy and her husband rob and their two teenage daughters had just moved from california to idaho, where they settled in meridian, a quiet town at the foot of the majestic rockies. >> rob and candy hall had been married for more than 15 years, and by a lot of accounts from their friends, were happy. >> rob was the i.t. specialist for the local sheriff. candy was a paralegal. but the 40 year old wife and mother was dealing with some career struggles. >> she had recently lost a job at another law firm, and so she was looking for somewhere to work. >> enter emmett corrigan, her soon to be boss. the rising legal star was boyishly handsome, cocky and ambitious. the 30 year old had just opened his own law practice. not only

did emmett have a thriving career, he had a beautiful wife, ashley. >> we were dating like two months. we dated really fast and we both just kind of knew it was what we wanted. >> they were the picture of the squeaky clean, all-american family with four kids and one on the way. the future looked bright. candy, the paralegal, was thrilled to be part of a vibrant new firm, but just as her professional life was coming together, her personal life was falling apart. >> she was having problems in her own marriage. candy, at times had told people that rob had been abusive toward her, that rob had had an affair of his own. >> reeling from the news of her husband's infidelity, candy threw herself into the job, logging long hours at work with emmett. it wasn't long before candy and emmett struck up a torrid affair, exchain racy emails, spicy text messages and

indulging in late night office trysts. >> they were having sex, apparently sometimes in the office. there were a number of coworkers who said they knew what was going on and clients also knew in some cases, i started thinking, there's got to be another woman or something. >> there's something doesn't feel right. like every time i'm trying to get close to him in ways that were just natural before it became like a fight. and the kids were starting to say, does he live here anymore? he's always at work. >> despite her gut feelings, she tried to convince herself she was just being paranoid. >> to be honest, i'd always be like, she's like 40. he just turned 30. ashley. no, there's no way. i mean, you're you're 28 years old. >> but then one night, everything changed. >> emmett came and said, hey, i'm going to run to walgreens real quick. i got this cold. i'm gonna i'm gonna go and just get some medicine. and i knew he was

going to be gone a long time, but just a few miles away, candy, emmett's paralegal, tells her husband she's going to run a quick errand too soon. >> a secretive drugstore meet up would change four people's lives forever. >> so around 9:00, candy. her car pulls into walgreens, and then emmett's truck pulls into walgreens and candy says she got in emmett's truck. and then they went to a nearby subdivision and they had sex in the truck. >> consumed by lust. candy and emmett think no one knows their secret, but by pure chance, candy's daughter pulls into that walgreens parking lot and sees her mom's car empty. thinking it's strange, she calls her dad, robert hall. >> so rob called candy's phone. candy answered the phone and emmett took the phone out of her hands. candy says that emmett started to get threatening to rob on the phone. >> rob heads over to walgreens, hellbent on finding his wife.

store surveillance videos show rob parking his pickup truck. he goes through the front door and roams the aisles looking for candy. rob leaves the store, remarks on the other side of candy's car, his door just out of range of those store surveillance cameras, and it's exactly what happens off camera that leads to an epic tragedy. when we come back, with tempers flaring, things are about to boil over between t mistress and the two men in her life, and only one of them will survive. >> my name is braden. i was five years old when i came to saint jude. i'll try and shorten down the story. so i've been having these headaches that wouldn't go away. my mom, she was just trying. what? they said. your son has brain cancer backwards.

welcome back. we continue now with a deadly love triangle. an extramarital affair between candy hall and her married younger boss, emmett corrigan is about to come to a violent end when candy's husband, rob shows up to confront them. only one man will survive, and no one will ever be the same in this parking spot next to candy's car, robert hall waits for his wife, candy and her lover and boss, emmett corrigan. when the couple pulls up and sees rob, they have no idea he has a gun in his pocket and revenge on his

mind, candy says at some point, rob provoked emmett by saying, why don't you go home to your wife? >> you have five kids at home. and that that set emmett off. he pushed off of his truck and came at rob. candy says she turned to leave and never saw what happened after that. >> rob pulls out a gun and shoots. >> emmett was shot in the chest and in the head, and rob had a gunshot wound, a graze wound to his head. she saw rob start to get up and she said she actually grabbed the gun and she said she threw it like a bowling ball across the parking lot. >> a panicked candy calls nine 1-1. it's too late. emmett doesn't make it across town, emmett's wife ashley gets the worst double news imaginable.

>> they said there's been two shots of a gun. there's been an accident in a fair. i remember looking around the room and everything just felt dizzy. it just didn't make sense. and it was really a mix of emotions, wondering like, why was i enoug? i begged him to stay home and fight for me, but instead he died fighting for someone else's wife. >> and at the hospital, rob hall is still alive, being treated for a head wound. cops questioned him about the shooting, but he claims not to remember exactly what happened. >> and the only eyewitness is candy hall. oh gosh. >> oh my god, she tells detectives. >> she went to walgreens to pick up a prescription where she met up with emmett. she claims they're just friends and she needed to vent about her marital troubles. but investigators already have naughty emails, texts and coworker statements. >> are you and emmett involved

in a romantic relationship? no. have you ever been romantic, emmett? >> no. >> okay, let's say sexual. have you been sexual with him? no. >> once confronted with the evidence, candy finally tells cops what they didn't see on surveillance cameras. >> i hear pop, pop, and then pop, and that's all i heard. and i turned around and both of them are laying on the ground, and it was kind of like on his like this. and i. i didn't know what was going on. and i just see all this blood gushing down his face. so i went over and i covered he had this wound on his top of his head, and i'm covering and i'm calling 911. oh my god, oh my god. >> days after emmett corrigan is gunned down, robert hall is arrested about a year later, he faced trial for second degree murder. >> these two families were forever changed by the actions of three adults in court.

>> the defense argued rob hall was consumed with jealousy over his wife's affair and acted in self-defense. after emmett instigated an altercation, and the only potential eyewitness isn't helpful at all, she would tell them what they wanted to hear, basically, while the judge said that he's never had somebody change their story so many times. strangely, candy and robert were back together, having rekindled their failing marriage after the shooting. after both sides rest their cases. the moment ashley's waited for guilty of second degree murder. >> i had really felt like i was the victim in this case, you know? i mean, most people hearing it would think that. but all i could see was these two mothers, a mother whose son was now going to be in jail for a long time, and a mother whose son had been killed. and it like it tore me apart, realizing that

there's other people hurting probably just as much as me, while rob did apologize to ashley and her children in court, she had this to say back. >> let me tell you about my babies pounding on a casket, their hero's body lying inside screaming for him to wake up and screaming at me because i was telling them that we couldn't open the box. hall was sentenced to 30 years in prison. ashley didn't let it ruin her life. she is happily remarried and has two daughters with her new husband. as painful as this episode was for her family, she says they've all learned from it. >> we talk about his good qualities, but we also talk about the choices that he made and how our choices do determine our destiny. >> rob hall is still serving his sentence in prison. he will be eligible for parole in 2028. separately, candy hall was

>> a 15 year old boy has been arrested in the shooting death of a beloved chicago postal worker, octavia redmond, who was known as the mother of the neighborhood, was killed while working on her mail route. a teen got out of a stolen suv and shot her multiple times before fleeing. investigators used video footage to identify the teen he was arrested in iowa and will be extradited to chicago. he's been charged as a juvenile
