singing of all things. i shot the sheriff. plus a 911 dispatcher is the one calling for help. >> my girlfriend just committed to it. >> but molly young's family isn't buying it. was it suicide or murder? >> the tone of it is like a guy ordering a pizza. >> your daily source for true crime starts right now. hi everyone. thanks for joining us. we begin with a case that has shocked a small kentucky town. district judge kevin mullins and county sheriff sean stephens were friends and colleagues for years. stephens was even mullins former bailiff. but now he stands accused of killing the judge. and, as they do in small towns, theories ran wild about the motive. true crime news went to the scene to get the latest new details. in a small, quiet town in eastern kentucky, a place where everybody knows everyone, letcher county sheriff

mickey stephens and judge kevin mullins returned to the county courthouse after having lunch together in a local restaurant, when suddenly a moment no one saw coming caught on surveillance camera in the judge's chambers with the judge casually smoking a cigarette in what appeared to be a chat between friends. the sheriff draws his gun repeatedly, shooting and killing the judge. >> when i heard who it was and what happened and who done it, i was devastated and highly shocked. >> the shooting leaving the small town of whitesburg, kentucky in utter disbelief. >> i think it shocked our whole community. >> i never thought that sheriff would do something like that. >> the unbelievable image printed on the front page of the local paper. >> we just saw the judge just in the restaurant here. i work at a local in the restaurant here. >> two days before that, and everyone in this small part of appalachia is now wondering, how

could something like this happen between two men who have worked together for over a decade? >> i'm sure there's more behind the doors that we don't know about. >> i rise as details remain elusive. >> sean mickey stephens is going from sheriff to defendant facing justice for killing judge kevin mullins. >> lowry district court is now in session with the honorable robert wilhoit. >> prosecutors showing the brazen shooting in court at a preliminary hearing. the sheriff reaches over the desk. the judge trapped with nowhere to go as the kentucky lawman shoots the man he once worked for as a bailiff. >> can you describe for us what happened immediately prior to the clip that we saw, defense lawyers questioned the lead detective about why this could have happened. >> i was told that daughter, and he had tried to call his daughter from the judge's phone. >> also, was that call to

sheriff stephens teenage daughter using the judge's phone, the motive, or is it part of the mystery? >> this video, posted on social media account in 2018, shows the sheriff and his daughter lip syncing to the song. i shot the sheriff. but how did stephens go from singing? i shot the sheriff to the sheriff shoots the judge. >> we have the evidence that was presented, which is largely very limited. >> husband and wife legal team jeremy and kerri bartley are defending the former sheriff, who resigned his position after the shooting. >> the video is shocking. you rarely see something like this play out on video. >> this is not a classic whodunit case. >> the defense team saying that what we see on tape is shocking, but it only tells part of the story. and so far they've only seen a small fraction of the evidence. in this case. >> what are we not seeing? that's the big question here.

what what don't we have? because there's so much more context. are those moments just before more important even than the moments we saw? >> another shocker in the case. listen to what the sheriff says after he's been arrested for the shooting. >> when he was taken into custody, i was told by one of the other officers that were there that he made the comment, they're trying to kidnap my wife and kid. >> what that all means is only adding to the growing mystery. the defense team saying they are continuing to gather evidence to defend the sheriff. >> there's actually an abundance and probably too much information to sift through the fact versus the fiction in this case, and those who have been in front of the judge are coming to his defense. >> he cared about his people. he cared about his community. >> heather bowman and keisha kinser say the judge mullins chose to put them in drug rehab rather than behind bars, and they credit his kindness for

their recovery. >> there's more to this story that we will never know. i'm sure, but others point to a dark secret going on inside this courthouse involving sheriff stephens and judge mullins. >> we took sheriff stephens deposition here on a monday, and three days later we had the unbelievable event of him shooting judge mullins, killing him. >> three days later, ned pillersdorf, an attorney who says that he had a tense deposition with stephens just days before the shooting. >> he hesitated. he seemed very flat, very depressed. >> in the lawsuit, a woman claims that a deputy under stephens coerced her to have sex in mullins chambers in return for her not having to pay incarceration fees. the deputy pleaded guilty to charges stemming from that case and was sentenced to six months behind bars plus probation. >> we've been asked to was there any connection then? we don't know. i mean, you know, we did

allege, though, that for certainly an extended period of time, they turned that courthouse into a brothel. >> he was mostly calm. i thought, i mean, i talked to him, but not he didn't say nothing about why this had happened. basically all i said was treat me fair. >> meanwhile, this mystery will play out inside the letcher county courthouse as the community grapples with the loss of a judge they all knew. >> we miss him sitting out on that bench down there, he sat out in the sunshine and smoke as they look to make sense over why a sheriff took the law into his own hands. >> stein's next court date has not been announced. we will bring you updates here and on true crime news.com. coming up, a woman is found shot dead and her death is ruled a suicide. but her family says she was murdered. that's next.

♪ no one lays a finger on your butterfinger. we turn now to the mysterious death of 21 year old mollie young, who was found dead from a gunshot wound to the head. it was ruled a suicide, but her skeptical and grieving family has been fighting an uphill battle to prove that it wasn't

mollie who pulled the trigger. i went to illinois to find out more. >> hey. i'm at okay. >> and who is this to you? >> it's my ex-girlfriend. okay. and is she not breathing at all? no, she. i woke up and she was covered in blood. she's overdosed. she bled out. you know, there is something unusual about this 911 call. >> hey, i'm going to send an ambulance, but they have a 1079 framber. >> yeah, this is richie. >> the caller is on a first name basis with the dispatcher. that's because the caller, richie minton, is a 911 dispatcher himself. he and amber are colleagues at the carbondale, illinois, police department, and he's about to tell her something shocking. >> my girlfriend just committed suicide. nine hours in the car. over. >> yep. we'll be on our way. >> thanks, amber. >> seven minutes later, minton calls back. his story has changed dramatically. hey, did

you find the sergeant? >> siebenaler. audi. i just found my gun laying underneath her. >> in the second call, richie says his on and off again girlfriend, mollie young shot herself. oddly, at first he hadn't noticed what several experts would later call a large and obvious wound on molly's head. richie also says that he slept through the gunshot, even though it was just four feet away. what really happened inside that apartment on the morning of march 24th? mollie was the youngest of three, but everyone who knew her says she was an old soul. >> well, mollie is my youngest daughter. my baby daughter. >> as a teen, she struggled with bouts of depression and even a cancer scare. when she started dating richie minton, a young carbondale police dispatcher. the family was divided. >> you know, their early 20s,

most of the guys in her age are not the most responsible. >> so i thought, oh my gosh, he's got a good job. i was thrilled that she was with him when he smiled. >> it just a feeling, you know, a feeling that he's an evil person. >> and that was the first time you met him? yeah. larry admits maybe he was just being an overprotective dad, but molly's mom says there were legitimate reasons to disapprove of her daughter's up and down relationship. >> i was over at her house one day, she said. richie just texted me that he's going to kill himself if we don't get back together. i said, he is manipulating you. >> things grew more complicated when mollie learned she was pregnant. she told richie she didn't feel healthy enough to carry the baby. given her recent cancer scare. but her sister holly says that wasn't the whole story. >> she later told me that the real reason was because she did not want him to treat their child the way that he had always treated her. she didn't feel like he was capable of raising a

child. >> they broke up soon after. then just a few days later on friday, march 24th, came that awful call framber. >> yeah, this is richie. my girlfriend just committed suicide. >> when i drove up in the afternoon, there was a state police car in the driveway, and he said, i regret to inform you that your daughter has been killed. and i fell to the floor. >> i never knew i was going to run out of time with her. i'm sorry. >> molly's dad is consumed by grief, but he's also furious when he finds out. richie's colleagues from the carbondale police allowed him to wash his hands and change his clothes, though they did bring richie and his roommate wesley romach in for questioning. both had fresh scratches on their backs. they had two lux scratches in the

middle of the back of the room. >> i have a fairly physical job, but within hours of molly's death, richie retains a lawyer and is never questioned again. he had two six inch scratches on his side that were fresh. >> where'd they come from? >> i don't know. richie's statement is that he must have gotten those scratches while giving molly cpr. >> illinois state police are called in to avoid a conflict of interest. their investigators also seem to believe things aren't adding up in an email sent at 10:16 a.m, barely an hour after the 911 call, one sergeant writes the incident is being investigated as a homicide. was richie minton a suspect? >> initially, i would say that he was a suspect, yes. >> but then, seemingly out of nowhere, richie is absolved of any involvement. after a coroner changes the manner of death to suicide. i don't believe that for a second. when we come back,

text messages. hours after the shooting, richie's roommate, wesley womack tells investigators he worked all night until 5:30 a.m, and at 4:40 a.m, he got a text from a distressed molly. do you remember what the text said? >> it said he had been texting another girl, asking her to stay the night, okay, and that he was so drunk that he couldn't walk. >> but police claim another text sent from her phone said, i think i'm going to shoot myself in the head and i'm really, really sorry. if you come home to that. >> and so at about 7 or 730, you go to sleep. >> what's the next thing that happens? after that? >> i wake up to richie opening my door and saying, molly's dead. >> help! i can't find my phone. >> molly's dad, larry, believes otherwise. so how do you explain that suicidal text that night that she died? he did it. he did what? >> typed her phone in. my wife types half of my text. he had control of her phone that morning. >> so you're saying she didn't

send that text as part of the young family's search for answers, molly's father assembled a committee of civilian investigators, including veteran police officer charles lamont, who also happens to be molly's uncle. what do you make of the 911 call? >> it was staged. it was rehearsed. >> can i can i go ahead and hang up? yeah. >> the tone of it is like a guy ordering a pizza. not like a guy who just lost a girlfriend he once claimed to love at her funeral. >> i lost it and jumped on her casket. and my family had to carry me away. and he didn't even come. is that what she meant to you? was nothing. >> molly's family has a laundry list of forensic information they claim points to possible foul play, and they can't understand why police aren't more forthcoming. carbondale police did not return our repeated requests for comment. as of now, it's been a dozen years and they're still pushing for an official investigation

until it happens. molly's sister has one more message for anyone who may have been involved in her sister's death. >> i would tell them that one day my dad is gonna take you down. just wait. >> joining me now is molly young's father, larry. so larry is there any update on molly's case? >> yes. >> tomás retired homicide commander came on board about three years ago and has interviewed over 20 new witnesses. he is convinced it's a homicide and he's trying to get it brought to trial. >> are you feeling hopeful that there's finally a states attorney who appears to really take an interest in molly's case? >> yes, i very hopeful he is communicated way, way more than any of the other ones. only communicated with me one time each. >> is there anything you can

tell me about what the state's attorney is gathering? >> he's gathering reports from experts, not just police officers, but experts. >> why do you think that's going to change anything? >> because the analysis has never been done. >> i do want to talk about, you know, the grand jury. grand juries operate in secret. but do you have any reason to believe that there could be a grand jury seated? >> now, molly's cases at the top of the list right now, and it's in grand jury. >> that's a huge update and break. >> it's a long time coming. 12 years. >> well, larry, i got to say, i love your t shirt. >> i sold thousands of them to different people. and we set up a molly young memorial foundation and 500 13c and everything. i guess the thing that bothers me the most is why they would turn a blind eye to obvious murder. >> larry, you've done an amazing job of keeping this case alive,
